I recorded this a couple weeks ago, but never uploaded it. So uh, enjoy! If you can! I look forward to more monsters named after garments. How about "Shoe Man: Darkness Hospital" next? Or maybe "Fedora Woman: Obsidian Sanitarium." What? These are great ideas, don't be jealous. Thanks for watching!
"It looks pretty strong."
>hits wood plank once with axe
>entire door flies off hinges
+Sammy Boy Of course man, it wouldn't make sense any other way 😄😂
Sammy Boy I mean hes not a professional woodsman
lmfao
"Who knew I was so good at breaking things?"
Sammy Boy, it was not actually really strong at all.
The protagonist here sounds really... Upbeat despite that he's in an alternate dimension being chased by shadow people.
Mr Madness - Remember he's also mental
Maria Gernette77 No, his daughter is the patient
Joseph Billing - Oh. lol. My mistake
Maria Gernette77 Well you're probably right anyway judging by his reactions :D Easy mistake to make.
I was thinking it's like he's LPing his own life.
'Hey guys, I'm back with more Finding My Missing Daughter...'
Joseph Billing - I'm just gonna say you're right. It's logical and the note in the beginning is what confused me, then I realized I mixed everything up. And also...why else would he sound mental? -_- Maybe the mental problems run in the family...?
The only thing that could make the protagonist of this game better would be if he openly accepted the Shadow Man getting him in his traditional chipper mood.
"Aw...Shucks. You got me. HATS off to you, Hat Man!"
*Ba Dum Tiss*
*Laugh track and fanfare*
*Development team credits quickly scroll by*
Jesus, that was and would be perfect.
if that happened this game would of been game of the year for 35 years
"Fedora Woman: Obsidian Sanitarium"
I'd watch that movie if it ever existed
One thing this game got right deserves MAJOR props: the flashlight's beam isn't a whitey-white distorted bullshit full of dark spots and donut holes, it _actually_ looks like a real quality LED torch projects that light. In fact, it resembles the light that I have on me every day (Thrunite TN12, neutral white), both in color tint and beam format.
Was really shocked to see that wall of Game Designers, theres like 50 names on that wall. This game comes of like maybe 4 people tops were involved. So either a lot of people are being over credited, or there's a lot of talent-less folks involved. Not being rude just realistic
I'm the hat man! bipbopbiditybopitybipbipopbopbadombopbampow.
Couldn't stop staring at your hair..looks so healthy and shiny/silky..the color is amazing too
I keep forgetting that the girl is the main character's daugther. Maybe because he's so nonchalant about everything, and she's so calm about everything as well...
"Yellow text? I don't even know what to say about that"
Neither do I, John. Neither do I.
This video title always gets “Scatman” stuck in my head.
6:58 I laughed in agreement with the character because of how I say the same thing to my therapist, but then John said it wasn't funny, and I remembered I'm kind of buggered aha
So glad the voice actor put on his best Rodney Dangerfield for this and the developer allowed it.
I wonder if the dev got permission to use the name Western Union, because if not, they should hope they don't find out. Banks can be greedy.
I would think that, in this context, it would be fine. Western Union wasn't always a bank, after all, and that _was_ a telegraph (which was what Western Union did in the beginning.)
I sure do love reading me some girl missing times. 10/10 news paper.
What does your pic say?
I am the Hat Man. They are the Hat Man. I AM THE WALRUS! GOOGOOGAJOOB!
Poor Justin long
So, uh, someone wanted to make Slenderman and it was taken so they called him hat man. Cool.
Actually this game was based off real experiences I believe.
snafuu The only thing that is Slenderman-esque about this game is the crappy pages collection game mechinic...
Shadow people and even "The Hat Man" existed during and most likely even before the 1800s(Primarily The Shadow People).
Slender man originated in the 2000s (2009)...
We are on the internet, do research!
Bill Cipher Yes, a couple centuries of experiences even... You got it bub ^^
Slenderman's story is fictional and very recent and was created by a single person under the name of Eric Knudsen.
SEVIONUS DOREGA :)
I must have mistaken Hat Man for some other tall, thin, shadowy man (SHADOW PEOPLE?!) wearing a hat who chases you around while you look for paper. It wasn't Slenderman, that's for sure. My bad.
*Pieces of the ceiling keep *breaking**
John: "Gimmie a break"
Me: Nothing? No silly pun joke face or anything??
Once, just once, I'd like the evil killer ghost creature that's trying to kill you in these games be congenial at first. You know: just tip his evil black hat and be like "Hello! How are you? I'm not sure who you are, but I don't think you belong here. I do think, however, that you'll belong soon enough."
And then, instead of being some monster to flee from alot, he's an actual antagonist: actually and actively hindering your progress through the game without just chasing you down and killing you.
You know, like they would do in a movie or game with a decent villain.
the name "hat man" kinda makes sense in a way, like picture crazy people seeing him and with their not so in the right place minds thinking up a name like that :P
keep up the good work John. I enjoy your playthroughs and sense of humor. I try to keep up with all your videos
I don't know who has the worst voice acting, the lead from Sylvio with the monotonous and indecipherable voice or this guy who sounds way too chipper for someone who is being hunted down by a ghost.
Rich Walk I say the one in the hat man. The ASMR doesn't ruin the game.
Rich Walk i feel like juliet's voice is at least a little more believable. the protag here sounds like he's trying to rodney dangerfield his way through hell or something
Rich Walk Er, I think it's this guy by a mile. I don't think the voice for Juliet is that bad, it sounds like ASMR is supposed to sound. It makes sense in context.
Rich Walk The real competition would be between this and the Jeff """series"""
sBeavis okay, THAT is a hard one.
I've gotten to the point where I have so much anticipation for another video from John, that as soon as a new one comes out, I just auto-like it before it even starts buffering haha
Okay am i the only one who thinks the dad sounds like Greg Universe? 'Cause that improved this experience like 800%
The voiceover really kills the immersion and mood of the game.
I like how your profile pic has a normal map in the corner.
@@TakeHomeTheCup Gotta have them tangent space Z axis = 1 values jumping off otherwise you're just uncool sir
as someone who lives in Canton Ohio aka the place the "asylum" is located, I was excited... man oh man was I wrong!thank God John made it better!
this voice acting is gunna give me an anuisum ROFL iv been binging johns vids......this channel is amazing
I think he sounds more like Fred from Scooby Doo
The coolest parts were the sound effects & tiny random things that happened. The other “scary” part was the inability to save & having to restart from scratch.
Otherwise, this was a Slender-esque game set in a better, creepier environment. The man's voice oddly reminded me of the actor Peter Coyote - only in tone. I'm not sure the VA added to the game, even the woman. The story could have been interesting, but having to do all that again for the “end” didn’t seem worth it.
Last night I had pot roast and then I went back for seconds and had more pot roast
This morning I was at the gym and I did a deadlift and sharted my short shorts
HippopotamonstrosesquippedalioFUCK I'm glad you told me that story.
HarshlyCritical 1 liek eqils 1 suport. best stori award.
HarshlyCritical It was awful
HippopotamonstrosesquippedalioFUCK Sometimes my butt itches but it would be too gross to just scratch it with my hand, so I just rub my butt on the nearest object until the itch goes away.
One day my brother caught me rubbing my butt against his bed, we haven't spoken since...................
HippopotamonstrosesquippedalioFUCK i ate a bee once on purpose
I'm actually really glad that you mentioned the babadook cause when I saw the thumbnail that's immediately what it reminded me of. Though the movie didn't scare me either.
22:06 I believe that's exactly what it was doing.
... I apologize.
3:00 yes, a dude in the house, and also HATS HANGING ON THE DOOR. It's SYMBOLISM!
Not really, probably just some kinda folksy decor. I feel like that's a waste of a perfectly good hat, though. Also loving the thumbnail image you used, puts me right in the mind of a creeping horror that steals your hats.
Oh wait, that's not why he's the Hat Man? drat.
The typeface for the journal entries is kinda screwing with my eyes, it's like the i characters all melt into the other letters and you can't see them. And a lot of the sound cues are kinda mushed together at inappropriate times, too. It makes for a pretty confusing romp. It's especially lovely that even though you picked the dad character, apparently they didn't record a scream for him when you die.
So I'm guessing whoever made this game learned everything they knew about mental health from Hollywood lol
The hat man noises sound like my stomach when I'm hungry...
Same! xD our whole house shook when my stomach grumbles! xDD
Seeing the credits room so early kind of took away any chance (however small) this game had of scaring me. But thanks for suffering through it for us =).
I wonder if he becomes "The Hot Man" when he takes of his hat.
Can't wait to see the dev's next game, "Sock Dude: Shade Asylum".
Basic concept and I liked it. But terrible voice acting from the main character. At least the girl talking when reading notes was correct... And jeezus, who would pay 5$ for this kind of game when you have free indie games way better than that?
LOVED THE BABADOOK!!! I love its analogy. :) people here need to watch it if they haven't. I think it's classified as a Suspenseful thriller.
Baba Dok! Dok! Dok!
I loved your criticisms of this game. Especially the voice acting and how frustrated you sounded every time your character spoke. To me it sounded like he wasn't scared, more that he was enjoying himself and being polite.
"I'm resetting my mindset," John says as his camera refocuses simultaneously. XD
"Shoe Man: Darkness Hospital" next? Or maybe "Fedora Woman: Obsidian Sanitarium." :DDD haha John, 10/10
John: Mindset this is a scary game
Also john: this voice acting is gonna give me an aneurysm
Picked up an "ax". Like, an instrument.
"This voice acting is going to give me an aneurism"
+1 sub
The way the axe is thrown totally cracks me up.
That's some A-grade 5$ voice acting right there! AND cheesy dialogue?
It's as if Tommy Wiseau made a horror game...oh the horror...
All of the long words, sentences, and paragraphs in this game are pretty good, but what is the one easy word they couldn't spell right? The Axe XD
2:23 No, no. See, just like "The Company" is the company, the newspaper is The Newspaper. There's only the one. So they don't need a title. They just put the headline where the publication's title would go.
Why does the voice actor sound like Greg Universe?
Ohmigawd he does!
glad im not the only one who notice.
Greg Universe trying to find Steven Universe.
Nananananananana HATMAN
I really liked most of The Babadook. It captured a sense of despair that's rare in movies, horror or otherwise. The third act was too over the top and the ending was too tidy, though.
I watched The Babadook on Netflix just a few days ago! I really liked it~ It's in the horror section but it's more of a creepy/unsettling psychological kind of horror rather than the scary/shock kind of horror most think of.
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes mild horror and has the time :)
Everytime I heard Hatman, I started singing to myself The Scatman song
I couldn't help but think of Grandpa Seth every time he spoke.
sometimes im just like cmon john have an open mind it could be good, then i remember your name is harshly critical and i realize it really suits you haha, still love your vids though~
Best. Voice actor. Ever.
The best part of the babadook is the car scene! 10/10 would recommend 😂
What's with all the BRAAAAAHMs in this game? Didn't we learn a thing or two with most movies/trailers coming after Inception?
With The Babadook I was just completely pulled out of the immersion when the most stock monster sound ever played whenever The Babadook was on screen U_U
Thanks for the movie recommendation. I really enjoyed The Babadook. It was right up my ally. :)
We may make fun of his name but Hat Man has already signed a contract to appear as a robot master in the Mega Man's third reboot game.
In the grand scheme of indie horror games, I don't think this is half bad. Not something I'm interested in, but I could see fans of Slender-likes enjoying it.
My absolute favorite comment regarding this game was on Rock Paper Shotgun. Someone in the comments said "I'm not surprised to learn that The Hat Man: Shadow Ward has procedurally-generated levels, since it obviously has a procedurally-generated title."
I really wish it is Bores. He did have a segment on ghost hunting on RUclips or someplace at some point. Maybe he finally decided to make his very own ghost house.
when he seen the hat man the second time he said it in such mono tone and wasnt suprised at all
Reading HC description made me laugh so hard xDDD
I don't know if anyone remembers that old video where the guy punches his monitor over the jumpscare in that maze game, but I've started to just picture him as the lead character in all of these Unity games. Especially in this one, the father just comes across as a complete dope. I'm just waiting for Sock Man: Nauseating Nightmare; you use a flashlight to navigate his literal cloud of stink. But don't let him touch you - his socks harbor pure hatred and claimed the whole (preset) village.
The moment you opened the book, I got an ad for Hotel Transylvania 3...
DOTH THOU SEE WHAT EVIL THY HATH RELEASETH!!!
i know every single comment is already about the voice acting but....seriously. either the creator voiced it, in which case he does not understand the tone of his own game, or he got somebody to do it, which is honestly even sadder.
also fedora woman: obsidian sanitarium sounds pretty sweet tbh
I lived in Canton, if I read that intro right. It does not have broad grassy fields. Of course, I don't recall seeing an asylum, either.
Not as silly as the bye bye man
normally i hate let's play videos but man, your personality is infectious, funny and not annoying in the slightest! i love watching your vids!
the goals group drove me off the fecking walls. GOD I SWEAR~ WE DIDNT GET ANYTHING OUT OF IT EXCEPT LOSING THE Only FREE TIME WE HAD
The concept of someone otherworldly taking you to the afterlife really reminds me of the movie Eye (the japanese original), where the protagonist sees recently died folk taken by a 'tall, mysterious gentleman (?)' to the afterlife. Kinda creepy.
Edit: Many parts of the movie also take place in a hospital. I keep thinking of that movie for some reason when watching this.
14:49 People from another dimension. There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination It is an area which we call..... ___ ________ ____ Good job if you get my reference. XD
Not trying to polish a turd here but, that view outside the window was gorgeous. Felt like some kind of filtered google street-view, quite realistic. Was quite curious to see what that view would be like in the "shadow dimension", but sadly is never shown in this footage...can't be bothered buying the game for this curiosity either haha
The first time I read the summary for "Mister Babadook" I imagined something a bit like "Sinister" or "Mama", maybe "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". But watching it reminded me of "Patrick". (Maybe it's just because they are both Australian Horror Movies and give off the same theatrical effect.)"Mister Babadook" wasn't really my favorite, but definitely better and not as confusing as Chernobyl Diaries and As Above, So Below. Probably would have appreciated it more if I hadn't thought it would be closer to "The Woman in Black" and co, when I first read the summary. In the end I'm still not sure whether the Babadook was a monster or simply a representation of the Mother's sanity. She did use words that the boy previously used in the movie after getting possibly possessed by the Babadook. Maybe she became like that every years around that time and the boy just repeat words she told him in the past when she got like that. Which would be a proof that the Babadook is just something that they are both imagining to cope with the mother becoming violent every years.
This game should be called "The man who can't open doors"
Just cause you told me not to be jealous....I'm gonna be jealous.
did anyone else think of that one song "Scat Man" while watching this?
I have never heard of a person having a sore neck because they only had one pillow
I love johns criticism
26:20 "m'okay"
Not the best page collecting simulator... but oh well :D
Benadryl man
Babadook is psychological horror
i love that movie he was talking about "the babadook" its really good
It's funny you should mention how impressed you were with Babadook since it was the director's first film, agreed though, it's a great film
yeah I saw that movie. For some reason it really had me on edge a couple times.
Hey John, I have a suggestion for your One-Shot Fridays. Its a game called "Doom.exe" which is a pixelated horror game, or "Brighter Day" which is an Alpha for the upcoming full version I believe.
I saw the babadook a month ago and I liked it actually. It, for me, actually does something different for horror movies where yeah it wasnt scary but it I think tried to be psychological. Take for example how she claims earlier on that she writes children's books, that makes the book of the creature seemingly maybe her creation out of sleep deprivation which intrigued me. Overall it was, again in my opinion, a good movie. So many of friends hated that film though lol.
I actually saw the "Hat Man" when I was younger...
Of course I'd never heard of him until I was in my 20's... He did not look like the enemy in this game, at least not for me.
I used to have a lot of sleep paralysis, which is when he is supposedly most likely to show up. But when I saw him, strangely it was a night that I didn't have any episodes. I've never seen any other "shadow people" before or since....
I agree with you on the feasibility of other dimensions. Do you believe in creatures such the Yeti? Species that might actually be real but extremely secluded or close to extinction? IIRC, the amazon rain forest and South America, I think, are very unexplored still to this day.
Really loved thevoic acting
The new Hat in Time dlc looks great!
2:00 good advice for everyday. Gonna start doing this.
7:57 "oh my God the typeface" I laughed so hard
Double post (sorry!) but I had to: 20:45 HARSHLY COMFORTABLE count: +1
This guy looks like The Babadook as if a child had recreated him.
Best voice acting evah!
