    Thanks for the comprehensive information! You have helped tremendously. I own a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the factory Infiniti system. Due to its age I want to upgrade but was somewhat baffled by the overload of choices and consumer marketing. I now feel somewhat educated and confident in my ability to make a satisfying purchase . I ordered an 8" Joying android 10 unit - the one with real volume and tone knobs. I selected it based on your excellent review and it's now in my 1999 Subaru Forester. Anybody having an older car, as I have will appreciate this model, since most of the other models rely on your having steering wheel switches, which of course I don't. It's a fabulous radio . Since I installed the sim card it has transformed my driving experience completely. I have about 80 movies on a flash drive, along with a great many audiobooks and several apps to make driving a great experience - a huge variety of entertainment on tap at all times. Thanks again for the pointer toward the Joying radios!

      @@officialWWM No, I just listen t the soundtrack while I'm driving. Knowing the movies really well, having seen them many times, it's like listening to radio plays. Try it - it works really well. You can drive and yet be entertained completely. You don't need the visuals.

    You saved me from making the mistake of buying an Android Auto stereo. I want maps and the ability to read texts but I also want youtube to play. Even though my eyes will be on the road, I want to be able to play anything for my listening pleasure when driving and then watch stuff when I am parked. Google searches and plays youtube reasonably well by voice.

    Thanks, you have well explained and clarified!
    You hit my doubt.
    I agree with Wayne Ramsden. I'm looking something like the one he described, indeed, simpler. I need only a display where view my phone only for calls and Google Map, then for display radio with RDS and for reverse camera. Stop. I don't need other, when I drive. The point is that I don't want to maintain and update yet another device, it is already more than enough to have to manage my smartphone.
    I use the car for short trips in the city.
    My car, Fiat Panda, can fit 6 inch 1 din display.
    Saab Unleashed, please, do you know if there is a 1 din device with these characteristics?

    Hi Stuart hope you can answer this one, ordered a Joying Android head unit which arrived, I ordered a dab usb extra for it. The installer says the dab radio won't work, he says the Chinese usb radios are rubbish. It was something I really wanted and also the reverse cameras on the Chinese units are poor it says 1080 on the camera unit but that is the part number that's the way they get round it. Hopefully you can reassure me of both as it's booked in for fitting next week.

    • @SaabUnleashed
      @SaabUnleashed  2 года назад +2

      Hey Andy. There's a lot of strong opinions around head units, especially Chinese ones. This is mainly because of the massive variation of quality available and he's probably trying to cover himself.
      DAB is easy on the Android head units because the USB adaptors are essentially plug and play, you just need to download the app. Obviously the antenna plays a part in the signal quality, but that's the same for any head unit.
      I have aftermarket reverse cameras on every one of my cars. Even branded head units use cheap reverse cameras. It doesn't need to be 1080p for you to be able to park your car :)

In my 1999 Subaru I can mount a radio chassis - either single or double DIN but it would place the screen way down out of my line of sight while driving. Is all the processing going on in the phone or does the head unit also do some processing?
    I´m asking because my phone is fine. But sometimes is locks up on the headunit. Then i have to exit Android auto mode on the head unit and go back in and it is fine.
    Other times when i start the car Android auto will not launch on the head unit but my phone keeps saying connect the phone to launch android auto.
    To fix this i have to turn off the car let the phone sit with cable in wait for the charge light on my phone to turn off then turn on the car and it normally boots up just fine not having moved cable or anything.

      Yes, Android Auto is a standard so will be around continually as you upgrade your phone. But yes, it's effectively a streaming service so requires Wifi and Bluetooth which are susceptible to lag in some cases. A fast Android unit will remain fast for at least 5 years. Slowness will become apparent only as installed apps update and start utilising more system resources as they develop.

      If you're going to be using component high fidelity speakers along with analogue amps, you'd arguably be better off going for a high end brand named radio with Android Auto as they generally focus on audio component quality. Don't get me wrong, you can an epic amount of frequency control on the best Android radios these days with minimal distortion, so they're still in the game. You could instead opt to move into the 21st century and go for a SPDIF 6 way amp with a Joying SPDIF Android unit. A single lossless optical cable will carry all music data from the head unit to your amp instead of a bunch of RCAs

    I am struggling here , I have always been a pioneer head unit guy an have been looking at the 2770 nex to give my wife a back up camera and wireless Apple CarPlay . From watching your channel I am now thinking of the atoto 7” In dash fswe or the s8 ultra
    Needed features
    Clear phone calls
    Wireless apple car play
    Ability to stream Netflix , RUclips , hallmark plus . Lol again my wife’s car . Any Input would help . My local stereo shop states all android are junk and stay with Ken wood or Sony because even the new pioneer are trouble in there opinion . Thank you in advance .

    You failed to mention Android Auto Wireless. Get in the car with a Android Auto Headunit and start the car while keeping your phone in your pocket or purse and it streams your apps automatically to your Android Auto Compatible HeadUnit Wirelessly. How does Sony/Kenwood Internal Amp compare with a Chinese Android HU Amp? What happens when the Chinese Android Auto HU does not support the next version of Android? Has anyone built an Android head unit that actually boots in a reasonable time? Most I see take a good 45 seconds to get going and load up. Meanwhile my Sony with Android Auto boots in about 2 and is usable in another 2. I'm not talking about sleeping either as that just kills the battery. I didn't even know there was such a thing as an Android Auto head unit. I thought they were all Android head units and some had Android Auto on them. Theoretically speaking an Android Auto head unit should be far cheaper, since all it does really is mirroring your phone. All the processing is done on the phone. Basically that is just what I'm looking for. All I want is to have Android Auto in my car without getting the phone out, so the head unit should connect to the phone wirelessly. And it fit into my Renault Megane CC (2011). Any recommendations? Cheers! 🙏🏽😎

    I bought an Xtrons unit because of your videos. I HATE it. The user interface sucks. Screen dimming is a joke. 3rd party launchers like AGAMA don't work with some of the built in apps (like the stock media player) and there are no upgrade/update files to keep the unit up to date. My security patches are dated October 5, 2019. Do you know how to fix these things?

    • @SaabUnleashed
      @SaabUnleashed  2 года назад +1

      I'm sorry to hear that. Screen dimming reacts to the illumination wire which should be connected to your headlight switch. That will automatically dim the screen when you turn your headlights on. Alternatively, AGAMA launcher has dimming set to the time of day, so you could opt to use that. I don't use the stock media player. The whole point of having an Android unit is that you can install your own apps. Regarding updates - that's normal.

      @@SaabUnleashed Here's another issue. When I was poking through the settings, on one of the EQ pages there is a setting for EXT AMP (on/off). I don't have an external amp, so I turned this off. About a day after I installed my head unit, I noticed that my radio reception had turned to rubbish. I arranged for an exchange of the unit thinking it was bad. I got the new unit, went through all the setup, and the radio stopped working again. Turns out that the EXT AMP setting controls the amplifier of my car aerial. Kind of a dumb place to put that setting.

    Thank you for sharing this. It seems that you focused on the mainstream usage but perhaps left out a couple of key facts. Android Auto is pretty pointless and also overpriced compared to Android Head Units. Frankly, AA is just a glorified SatNav :)
    Working with these units down to the hardware level, our experience is that very few consumers realize that many of these so-called branded Android Head Units are built from poor materials and weak configurations, resulting in an immense loss of sound quality in your car and poor handsfree experience.
    Luckily many of these head units can be modified to perform on a freakishly good level, delivering outstanding audio and user experience. But it's clear that no manufacturer feels it's worth the effort.
    We would add that the best thing you can do as a consumer, is to aim for AHU's that use an optical or fibre-out connection, as this way the sound quality loss will be minimal when sent your external audio hardware. Unfortunately, these head units aren't very cheap.
