In this video I show how to make a GoPro Mounting Pole that you can use to either shot self portraits or point your camera forward for shooting great video of others. This a vary simple and should not cost that much to make. All you need is an old ski pole, some nuts and bolts, spray paint, and a GoPro Tripod Mount. This project should not take that long to make, no more than a few hours and will render a completely new world of possibilities for your GoPro Camera
YES, this is one of the most useful parts you get with the GoPro it can be used for so much.
This is the best DIY mounting pole on RUclips, i ended up using what i have here in AZ a hiking stick in which it extends to a certain length...thanks for all you tips !
Sweet. That is a good idea. Using something that is expendable is a good plan
Badazzzzzz finally someone uses their dremmel for something worth while. Props for the ingenuity. Keep up the inventive way of thinking and post more.
@WorldSportingLegends
I made this video a bit differently than the rest. Most of the time I record the audio and video files together. However for this video I recorded the entire video first then added the audio latter a bit by bit. I think that this is way it sounds a little weird that is why from now on I always record both at the same time.

I had some was able to get rid of them by sanding. Thank you for the advice I will do that next time.
Thank you for the advice.
Good idea that is a nice light way of doing it.
Perfect. I need a easy way to create a steady cam... Gracias amigo
Wow, cool tips.
Thank you for the videos.
Great video, easy and cheap to make, and definitely gets the job done!
I think that it should be fairly good. It will be a lot better then using the handle bar mount. I have put a GoPro on the boom of a 29er before. When I did that I ran a rope from the camera to the boom. This way if the mount broke the camera would still be attached to the boat.
If you have not see it yet check out the video "Adding A Securing Loop: GoPro Mounting Tips & Tricks" I feel this is the best way to tie on the camera.
Thanks for the tips....it helped me make my own. Keep the good tips and tricks coming!
Awesome! Simple yet effective.
probably one of the best ive seen. well done.
I made this the other week and it really is amazing
Awesome thanks
very innovative, thanks for the idea! i'm doing it and it's gonna save some money!!
I will be sure to check it out.
Sweet! That is really nice to know I could not find it any where
that was the most helpful video ever! thanks dude!
You can buy a tripod mount or if you have one use the handle bar mount. If you do not have ether of those you can use an extender bar and placed inside the pole and then hold it in place some how, bolts or epoxy work well.
This was one of my early edits the audio is made up of hundreds of short clips. Since then I have worked on getting the audio to flow better, recording long clips at a time.
Thanks man, I just made one out of an old cruch. Its sick
You could try some kind of walking / hiking pols. If that fails maybe the hardware store for some piping
I used an old crutch, great controllability and its extendable.. Great videos man..
thanks so helpful
@5firestars
I will have to agree with you and say that using the “seatpost handlebar mount” is a viable way to make a GoPro pole.

Great video
@Jmyster4 Yes it did I got a little crooked in the cut and it snapped. Ware eye protection!!
Awesome
@TheLambo7 Yes I know I have one of those mounts. I have 3 problems with using the handle bar mount;
#1 I find that the mount is a LOT bigger, mounting like how it is show in the video is nice and compact.
#2 I have found that the handle bar mount is not always that secure this can lead to some movement (shake) in the video.
#3 I find that the handle bar mount dose not attach well to smaller diameter ski poles, I have seen this fixed with a lot of tape but I am not a big fan of that.
Nice job, I think u can also use hiking poles that are able extend to different lengths.
I'm getting the to pro hero 3 + black edition and I was wondering can I use a nut instead of a wing nut for the tripod mount keep up the good work and the tips help

Thanks it helps slot and saves a lot of money I am making one right now
good video buddy!!!
The pant that I was using was old and did not spray that well. So the final coat was quite rough. I did not sand it much and it was with really fine paper.
Very cool, I like the walking stick idea (fixed lenght) but I am using a monopod to give me different lenght from one foot to five feet. but thats my DIY...
That is a good point but if I wanted to that I would just use the handle bar mount.
Just made one with a broken golf club! Thanks for the tips!
awwwwesome, just finished making two!!
thanks man!
Good tip.
@redwingsown9
Sweet glad to hear that it worked.
nice very helpful
Thank you for this video...I have made the same boomstick, looks, works great...:)
Thanks
@Pablo223523 I think that I would that I would try 36” that is the length of the one that you can buy. As you can see from the clip of skiing at the beginning of the video the legs are cut off. With the new HERO2 and the wider viewing angle of 170° this has gotten better. You will also notice that I am using the 960p setting this is the best way to go for skiing and snowboarding as it is a more square shot and will capture more of the athlete.
Let me know if there is anything else.
-Kyle
awesome
Thanks!
thanks
@5firestars
First I would like to say that we are talking about the same mount it is listed on the GoPro site as the “Handlebar Seatpost Mount”. The bigger one we are thinking of is the “Roll Bar Mount”
Second I would have to say that if done right the Handlebar Mount could work. However I would rather not need Gorilla Tape and from a price point of view the Handlebar Mount is $19.99 where as the “Tripod Mount” is only $7.99.
These are just some of my thoughts let me know what you think.
nice vid
Mine = Better
but using the handlebar mount works well to, just make sure you try mounting it to the pole once before you go skiing
Hey nice video! haha i noticed that you ended up shattering the cutting wheel. Ive had that happen before and its a good idea to make sure your not in line with the heel when cutting or just wear glasses. Thanks Kyle!
Thanks and sweet
Your best bet is go to a hardware store and find the one that fits best. With nuts and bolts you can note easy change from metric to imperial.
No that is for when I use it over the water. I have a video showing how to add that.
wont do it a ski pole since i dont have an old but you gave me a good idea ! thansk !
You bet glad I could help
+Andreas Batsilas Plenty laying on the slopes at the end of the season when the snow melts.
It is true, lock washers and a wing nut should be real strong
Thanks I will
whats the little leash thing attached on to? thanks nice video
Nice video btw
Hey man! Nice vid, and good idea! Just a tip for future use... if you screw on a nut on the side of the bolt you want to keep before you cut it, then when it's cut and smoothed, you can simply un-screw the nut, and your threads will be fine. If you have a tap and die set, you could also screw the right sized die onto the bolt prior to cutting as well. Just fyi!
Keep up the good work man.
Awesome vid! Any other solid poles besides an old ski pole, as I'm not from that climate where skis would be used lol.
Good Job :D
I am glad.
If I was to make another I think that I would go about 30” or try an extendable pole the one that I have right now has trouble capturing the all of the person in the shot.
planning on making one thank you! What camera resolution, and fps do you use skiing? I have a Hero3 camera
@redderboy If you look up a video titled “Adding A Securing Loop: GoPro Mounting Tips & Tricks” you can see how to add your own.
I just did this after my gopro pole mount broke. this is much sturdier, only takes a few minnutes. awesome
Mine is a cheep mettle pole do not remember what make. If you try to use a carbon or composite one it will not flatten it will just split.
Werry NICE
Any hardware store,
@barrozify Nice let us know how they work
Could ya post a quick vid from that 32" extension back towards yourself to give a frame of reference?
With most poles the diameter is too small for the adhesive mount attach well
that is a good reason
If you look through the comments you will see that this point has been brought up a lot. As a quick recap the way that I show has less vibration is more secure and a lot more professional looking.
Sweet does it capture your whole body in the shot?
No it is not heavy I think adding a counter weight would only make the thing heaver and more of a pain to hold.
Friendly tip when you are flattening the pole use a vice if you have one. It works great.
are all the bolts that come with the gopro 1/4 inch-20 thread bolts?
Where did you buy or how did you make the little string deal that is attached to your GoPro and pole it looks like just in case it falls off?
if you put a 1/4" nut on the bolt b4 cutting it, it can be used for redyeing the bolt. i would recommend that. cut the bolt then work the nut a lot on the cut end. you never have issues that way. mark
i Used the handlebar mount but it will slide around on the pole so where you want to put the mount add a few layers of tape to give it something to grip to.
@Themoviemaker400
Read through the comment thread you will see that this subject has been brought up before.
I used an old swiffer mop pole. it could be detached into 4 pieces so that is can be adjusted from 24-11 inches.
hey could you give me some other tools i could use for the specific parts because i don't have a dremel
You should be my first subscriber!
Class video, don't have any tools, so im buying a go pole
did you put that piece of wire/cord on the go pro, specifically for this mount?
I am going skiing with my GoPro, and I want to mount the camera to a pole.
Do you think it will be good enough to use the GoPro Handlebar mount, to mount it to the ski pole, or would a specifically designed pole like yours be a lot better?
I just think it might be annoying to have another pole with me all day, since I also have to carry my two ski poles..
What is it called? That would be an awesome buy
I would suggest you hang it by the pole strap to paint it and I personally would paint it lime green or bright orange so its more visible and easier to find if you wipe out in deep snow.
Hey, just wondering should I get the White Edition or Silver Edition? I'm really not sure what one to chose, whats the difference between them? Thank you
Like I said in the video a hack saw will work just as well.
I would have just used a bicycle mount. And I am just curious why you sanded the final coat?
can u send a link to that. I cant find it on ebay
