This is part 4 of my series "how to make an egg timer timelapse panning unit" for GoPro Hero cameras.
I'm calling these units Golapse, as in GoPro time lapse.
UPDATE: GoLapse Part 5 is now available to watch check it out.

All four installements are pure genius. This one beats them all. Thanks
I just finished making both versions of your GoLapse (one with 1/4" coupling nut; one with super-glued 1/4" nut). I recommend using a 1/2" drill bit to flush out the threaded nub of steel that protrudes out the back of the timer housing in order to leave a little more room for a tripod mount screw to fit inside the nut without possibly pushing against the timer housing. In my case, using the Ikea Stam, this gives about 1/16" extra clearance. Very ingenious engineering; can't wait to use them!
YES, I covered that in part 3 of my panning time-lapse DIY series.
You time lapsed a camera making a time lapse......THAT'S BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the great tutorial. I updated my time-lapse panning timer with a lot of these suggestions.
Awesome idea Larry!
Just awesome. Thank you for sharing your skills!
Thanks! I got the flat ordning look-alike timer and another one I dismantled to try build the gluing kind.
Nice!!! the clouds blocked the sun just at the right moment!!! Great video, im gonna try this!!!
This is great! Always love a good DIY :)
Great video, and awesome design! THANKS! :D
awesome idea and video! thank you a lot
Check my playlist for the other panning unit videos, it may help you decide which version or how to modify your own model. Good luck!
Thanks for the information! I may have to give that a try.
Just an easy way to get a great Timelaps...thanks for that Vid...
the explanation video is very well done! stylish!
love it dude.
sooooo clever!!!
thanks for sharing!!
Yea right, been waiting for a call from Nick Woodman but I think he is more interested in X games. I'm just glad he made this camera, been tons of fun.
Nicely done, I will be making one of these when I get my GoPro back from repairs.
Wouldn't have been able to resist the urge to call it the ProLapse though!
Your timer how-to videos are great! Thank you for the information. I saw that one of your viewers was looking for a 60 second version. I recently built a 1 minute style and I thought you and he might be interested. I sent you a video response request and put a link to your timer playlist in my video. Thanks again for your help!
Fascinating.
Yes it's done with still shots. For the panning shots, I have found that it needs to be 1 frame every 2 seconds or lower (1 or half second) to look good. Most of my projects are set at 30/60fps
Ahh, ... Smart.
Thanks for sharing these ideas.
What a GREAT idea!
Thank you for the helpful video
We have IKEA here in the UK. But I wonder if we get the same egg timers! This is a brilliant idea!
wow this is a great diy. cheap and effective!
Awesome how to, thank you
You need to see Part 3, where I showed how to convert the Ikea Ordning timer.
I can't put the link here, check my playlist.
Amazing, god job friend
As soon as I get off work im going to go buy and egg timer this is ingenious
Thanks for the video! Using IKEA's Ordning (?) timer is a much simpler solution, where you can just stick the GoPro's mounting shoe, but I needed something smaller, almost pocket size, so this does the job and it's a lot cheaper! As I had no powertools to drill on the bell, I glued a washer and then a nut to the bottom, just to make sure the tripod screw wouldn't touch the bell, thus avoiding it from "detaching" the nut if you screw too far.
Thanks for that. First class idea..
Thanks!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for posting this, I don't use Mac, so I'm sure many will find your information useful.
I have found a couple of relatively inexpensive 2-hour (120-minute) mechanical timers and will try to build a GoLapse unit on one of those platforms. Will let you know how it turns out in a couple of weeks. I already use the coupling nut version and like it the best.
Approved and I subscribed, Guns, GoPros and Heavy construction Equipment Nice.
Very cool!
amazing!
Thanks for sharing... that's a nice one, although I dint like much the screw... I mean it could be something stronger to hold the hall thing
Check out part 5, the mount is more complex but very sturdy.
Very cool i think ill try that
great idea
Thanks, there is a new video in the works with two new additional modifications.
One that will help with the Pan/Tilt video, the other is a modification of the base, stay tuned!
Awesome!
Fantastico
thank you! its really great! :) thanks another tool for my GoPro! :)
thats sweet. great idea buddy. Ragecams has no fish eye lenses that take away the rounded edges or if you scratched your current lens if you ever need a new lens.
Man, that's a pretty useful tip, thanks. :)
Yes, its called interval mode. I think all GoPros have it, most of the time-lapses in my playlist were shot with GoPros. I use "still" interval mode not "video" mode for time-lapse.
There are three post on the top of the particular timer I was converting.
The more surface area you glue, especially posts, will make the joint stronger.
Time-lapse like high speed video is magical because it distorts time, part of the fun is experimenting with shifting that time, and have some fun doing it. Good luck, send me a link when you get something you want to show off.
Dude you are a genius !
Google's Picasa has a nice n easy "Create movie presentation" option which can be used for timelapse.. I've used it quite successfully.
good idea!
Thanks for all of your instructional videos, they are very helpful. My only thing is having to wait a full hour for a full revolution. Do you see any problems with putting one timer on top of the other to cut the amount of time in half for a complete 360?
In time-lapse more is generally better, makes the time-lapse smoother, unless your shooting a glacier. With the panning GoPro shots I like to use 1 frame every 2 seconds or less, use 1 frame every half for really smooth shots.
Very Good ! Will use with my ZI8 :)
Saw you in Casey's vlog
Sharing good ideas I can add it is also possible keeping the case (the smaller 3+) and using external microphone/composite/power with a solution similar to this GoPro Hero3 + Black - DIY external mic adapter cable to fit inside case (waterproof)
Cool, You can cut the coupling nut in half and it will make the unit much smaller and manageable.
Excellent videos! Very well done. Now if you could just find a way to hack the timer to make it last maybe 2 or 3 hours that would be amazing!
Yes!, I guess now I need to take it one more step and time-lapse my time-lapse shooting a time-lapse.
You need to check the export settings, also you might want to download the free quicktime player if you don't have it. It should export as a mpeg4 mov file.
JB weld might hold a little better then super glue. Used it on another project like this years ago and it was pretty hard to break
which holes? the holes on the bottom of the GoPro shoe depends on the size of the posts on the top of the timer, different models have different posts
so you have to measure and find the appropriate drill bit
Cool!!!
Damn why can't I found this idea! Cheap but enough, awesome!
Make sure you watch part 3 as well, I have several variants its important to pick the one that's right for your DIY skill level.
Went to IKEA to get the same timer today. They don't carry it at our store anymore. sucks, got lost for no reason haha. Will try another timer since they are made off the same design as you said.
Sorry, just heard the news last week. I am very happy with my "Lady Bug" timer a buddy picked up at "Bed Bath and Beyond" but any of the cheap timers will work, just check the timer at the store and make sure the dial does not slip.
Good luck with your build!
Well, you can do one of two things to slow the time-lapse down. Get a slower timer, 2 or 3 hour timer or increase the number of frames per second.
I have the original wide the Hero and Hero2, I will most likely get the Hero3 soon!
Yes, JB weld works great. Just don't tighten it too hard.
No and yes, these timers only "do" one hour. Any mechanical timer can be modified to do this, so find a longer duration timer.
To do clockwise, invert the timer and camera. check my playlist and you will see a few pan right videos.
genious
Time-lapse setting. Basically shooting jpegs that you combine in editing. The quality of stills is much higher then video, however, the new Hero3 shoots 4K so in the future shooting high quality 4K video my work better.
I got several great photo sets from Zion and Bryce National Parks using the GoLapse timer (I used the one with the coupling nut exclusively since I popped the nut off the super-glued one on my first day!). I need recommendations for editing software to create the time-lapse movies...any suggestions?
Freaking awesome
Yes, it is an old one. I just pulled the adhesive off.
1 frame every 2 seconds, one frame every second is a good place to start.
The speed of the clouds going by is a factor. I like one frame every two seconds.
Slow movement is the point, you need to set the GoPro to interval mode 1 frame every 2 seconds or 1 frame every second. The camera will shoot hundreds of still photos as the timer spins then you import them into your editor as a video sequence. The best time lapses are made from still pictures not sped up video.
I got a timer similar to the ordning. Is it ok, you think to just glue the nut at the bottom, rather than drill it? I've no power tool skills whatsoever. Thanks for this video by the way. super cool!
I have and the video is half shot, will be working on putting it out soon.
for 60 minutes time lapse, what is the best setting for gopro if i wanna take the footage of moving cloud
one snap per sec?
in the end of the video, you do video, o photos? Thanks!
Gostaria de saber o nome desse objeto q vc desmontou para fazer o time lapse giratorio e onde posso encontrar
so how do you set that? I have the hero3 and on that you have a time lapse feature where it takes pics every 30sec, 40, sec, 10 sec and so on.
So... quick question, should I use the timelapse feature for 1 or 2 seconds, or should I just film and then speed it up after?
advantages?
disadvantages?
Apple or PC? I use an old version of Avid, so I am not up on the latest and greatest, Adobe Premier or Apple Final Cut, i-movie are a few that come to mind.
Interesting, let me know how well it works.
Gluing the nut will work ..... but ..... it will fail if you tighten it too much.
I would try gluing it, if it fails you can find a friend with a drill and do it the other way. I personally use the post method, it is full proof, watch my most recent video at the end you can see my most recent variant working.
Good luck on your build!
Just curious, when the GoPro3 can capture time lapse stills at 12MP why would you opt to use the 4K video mode? Surely the 12MP stills are going to be higher quality than 4K video? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Either will work, for an hour timer you want to use a 2 second interval of less so the move is not choppy, as a general rule in time-lapse the more frames the better, smoother. Later you can loose frames to speed it up but slowing down the time-lapse just makes it choppy. If you have a hero2 try the half second interval, it makes wicked smooth driving time-lapses. You can always make a time-lapse by speeding up video, but it just does not look as good.
You want to make the time-lapse longer? Shoot more frames per second or find a slower timer. If you are currently shooting 2 frames per second try 1 or 1 frame every half second.
in the timer photo mode in wich mode did u use it i mean each how much seconds do you take a picture??
Like I said above, convert it to an mpeg4 mov file and you should be able to import it into any editor or upload it directly to RUclips.
How do you take off the mechanism from the thing in 01:30 ?
I've just broke one timer!
Yes and maybe no. check out my latest video, but more important check the description box for that video, it has a link to a blog post by one of GoPros engineering bosses discussing this issue.
Is this what you sent to casey neistat?
