Commonly referred to as a "piggyback forklift". The reason why it goes so high is so it can hook to the back of the semi trailer or flatbed truck back in the day, this is an older model and is no longer used commercially in the industry ( Canada ) due to stricter safety regulations as you found out the hard way. The models they have now example: Moffet M8 the actual forklift itself does not go up or down but instead uses the forks on the lift to actually lift the forklift onto the back of the flatbed and hooks into place. Thanks again for another awesome video, love the channel.
That’s the damndest thing I’ve ever seen. I love it though. Handy for lifting engines and transmissions I reckon. Thanks for the video as ever much appreciated.
@@DarkFlamage As soon as I saw this I thought "the forks should move in and out". After watching other vids of this unit, I believe, that fork attachment is missing on this unit. ruclips.net/video/Gnlu8Pk4mys/видео.html
Hi, they still use these loaders here in europe, saw one couple of weeks ago unloading pallets in the street, great bit of kit hooks on the back of a articulated trailor.
Bob you nailed it that's exactly what it used to do the most common thing that I used it for was putting sod on the back of a flatbed truck or a semi trailer thanks for letting him know but it sure is fun to and it brings back memories
The raising and lowering of the front and real wheel(s) is how it attaches to the back of the truck for transport. For normal use, it is kept low to the ground (adjustable for ground clearance?) for stability. After seeing that tip over, glad your ok.
used to see these on Lowes truckin my area in the 80s and 90s Kent McKean ex[lained it the way I remember it. You kept it low when loading or unloading, and raised it up when hooking it to the back of a flat bed truck.
They are used to deliver drywall, they are used in the delivery of sod pallets for landscaping. They are for delivery on flatbed trucks on job sites where there is no other means to unload the truck
Way to much fun.....now some A I, and it could mow yards, trim hinges, pull engines, move cars, even smoke fish, light BBQ. There's no end of possibilities.........
Along with a friend, we modified one of these from forklift to mini digger. The previous owner had really mangled the forklift part of it and i had one of those small tracked diggers, but it was so rusted on the tracked system that it really wasn't good for anything anymore. Marriage made in heaven. It's really useful and stable, much more so than the OG mini digger.
That thing can come in pretty handy out in the yard, because I think those machines are pretty good on unprepaird surfaces. A set of snow chains on the drivewheels and you may have a all terrain/all season forklift to help you get stuff into the workshop all year round there bud...👍😁
Glad you weren’t hurt. You can use it for moving engines and transmissions around the yard, especially palletized items. Maybe you could pick up some extended forks which will allow you to get closer to larger objects. Enjoy and be safe.
When you look back at the lack of safety features on old stuff it's amazing we lived this long. I also don't remember anyone suing a manufacturer for being stupid on their machine. Thank you for your time. I really enjoy your videos and learn stuff as a bonus.
This is what I love about you and your show. You have the same idle curiosity and fascination with machinery that I do. The idea that someone needed a problem solved and then invented this to solve that problem is just totally unreal. It's also the forerunner to the mech loaders from the Alien movies.
That is a pallet jack on steriods….seriously. Every pallet delivery service has one if these attached to the back of a trailer. It is designed so the wheels to go under a semi-trailer to pick up pallets for delivery. Always a great video…..I am surprised it runs as good as it does. Good job!!
Possibilities: a bit of welding and a few minor alterations, that cyclops could be turned into the perfect wood/log splitter and cart for hauling firewood to the shed. Take the forks off and install a beam on it for removing engines in the yard. Use it as a tow vehicle around the yard.
Another fantastic resurrection. You have flipped and are now certified to operate it. Awesome that you are so talented and have so much fun doing what you love! Rock on
That has unloaded a lot of bricks, block, roofing shingles and hard to tell what else. Piggy Back Lift !! Great stuff!! Thank you for sharing !!! God bless you and yours !!!! Eddy
Your own personal Spider Monkey. Thes are mainly used unloading building supplies off flat bed trucks. Hope you can find it as a tool around the garage. Thank you Brent for sharing!
Still see them all the time, unloading SOD pallets. shingles pallets, trusses, lumber and supplies. They have them used for sale just like that $2,000 - $4,000 all the time, great find for, bodies, frames, engines ect!
It a Home Depot fork lift , and it will lifet 1 full Pallet of bagged concrete 5500 pounds 60 or 65 bags 65 to 90 pounds each, so yes it will pick any engine you might want to pick up, lol thanks BigAl California
We call them Donkeys here in Texas. They are used mainly for delivering pallets of sod (rolled up grass) they're normally next to the truck when the front wheels are stood up. They straddle their load and carry two pallets at a time some times. The height is to reach the flat bed level of a semi flat bed trailer. They also lift themselves up to attach to the rear of the trailer for transport from field to job sight. Very handy! They'll pull a motor without without blinking!
yep it's a truck back forklift. the whole 9 miles in the air stance is so it can stow itself on the back of the truck. lifting is done in much lower positions. they are damm handy all terrain forklifts. they are NOT meant to be used in the lifted position :D glad you didn't get a face full of car. I wish i had it here. i do a lot of lawn tractor and small engine stuff it would be an amazing machine for me :D
Brent. I have not heard u laugh so much I don't think ever. I don't know who had the most fun. You or me. 😁🤣💪one of ur best fun vids in a long long time. Great stuff
Yes the forks go in the slots on the trailer, and the wheels fold up ,and chain down to trailer, mostly used for carpet grass or cement block or brick .Love your channel ,Happy Thanksgiving, God Bless you and your Family
Probably has been said before but back in the day people operating the spyder knew that lifting the unit was only for the purpose of attaching to the back of the truck and never used it in that very unstable configuration for picking up pallets. You maybe be the only one who has tilted one over. The Spyder should be very handy for moving around engines, trannys and differentilas ect.
Brings back memories! Had a Spyder in the early 80's on a Sod Farm I worked at. (Pretty state of the art back in the day.) Piggy backed on the back of a flat deck semi trailer & could lift full pallets of sod 3000 - 4000 lbs. The wheel height raises to meet the level of the back of the trailer & the forks would then slide in to the trailer brackets. (Wheels were then retracted again for transport.) Lesson learned! lol The wheels are ALWAYS on the lowest height level for normal driving height while loading & unloading. Glad you both were unscathed!
Lol well that was interesting..omg..another toy that nice too have around ,, luv that pipe bender, we had one at work bending pipe that went into gas pumps, sucker will bend anything, just be sure too keep ur fingers away while bending
Hello from France ! On this vidéo, not only the forklift was gooffy, you too a little bit 🤣 It is approximatively a zero turn , lift is inside wheels arms… perfect for center of gravity. I would use it to extract, move engines.
Well Brent another educational tutorial on repairing the Spyder Forklift. And how not to lift with it, you rode it in like a cowboy I might add, great job and thanks for sharing that with us. Me and Pablo are disappointed there was no Pablo ride at the of the video with the drone flying around, he could have sit in your lap as he has on some other rides. As always another great video on fixing things and take care my friend.
Good for flatbed pallet handling. The newer ones have driven wheels on the rear wheel also. With some modifications you'll find a use for it. Love the pipe bending and the exhaust was really rat rod.
Specific, single purpose pallet lift. You operate with body close to ground. You raise the body (lower the wheels) to insert the forks into the receivers in the frame of a delivery truck, usually a flatbed 5 ton and then when the wheels are raised (the body lowered) the machine hangs off the rear of the delivery truck for transportation. A fully portable unit which can handle three pallets of roofing shingles or bricks stacked for delivery at one time. The wide wheel stance makes the unit very stable on uneven ground which is usually the case around building sites and it can raise the pallets to quite a height to unload on a single story roof. Cashway Building Centers used them a lot back in the day.
My guess is that it is a sod fork lift. It's to take sod out of the field on pallets, when it is being cut and put on a truck, or from the truck into the field to be laid. The reason it lifts so high is for ground clearance. Nice toy, looks like fun.
It looks pretty much like the ones we used for palletized sod in the 70s. You don’t drive it around raised up, that’s to attach it to the truck to haul it for deliveries.
It always looks like you are having more fun than is legally allowed in the USA! I want to be a Canadian! Another awesome adventure and thanks for sharing!
Well that was funny, great for moving pallets around in tight spaces and loading flatbeds, it’s moved to jobs hooking onto back of flatbeds and raising up off of ground for trans port
That spyder is a OK lifter for engines , pallets, and stuff you can get between the forks. It could be very useful when you learn its limits. Cant wait to see what you do with it ????? Stu in Ontario...............
Great video, Thanks Brent! Not sure how you will fit an LS into it but I'm sure you will figure it out😂. "NO BIGGIE". I remember these when they came out and I think you are missing the carriage adapter with the forks that extend out to grab the pallet off the truck. They can easily lift 4 thousand pounds. The idea is the front wheels go under the truck/flatbed trailer and the forks can extend out to the pallet and retract back to the mast. They are great for uneven ground and deliveries off road. The wheels are only lowered to full height to lift the whole spyder to the truck bed level then the forks go into storage pockets and the wheels are raised all the way up and locked into saddles on the trailer, Other than that, the spyder was driven only with the forklift close to the ground. A chain was attached to the trailer and the hydraulic cylinder on the side (the one you pointed to) is to pull it tight to the truck for transport. The muffler is horizontal round and goes directly on to those manifold pipes and discharges to the side but I like the dual exhaust you put on much better! This is a great video especially the stunt work of tipping it, You forgot the disclaimer that you are a trained professional on a closed course and do not try this at home 😁
It goes that High to get mounted on the back of the delivery truck. I think you can get a user PDF Manual on the innerweb? They get between houses easily and carry a big load.....
Great video. Love these revivals. That tube bender looks like a great addition to the shop. As stated numerous times below, these old Spider lifts are designed to drive under a truck bed and lift loads up and off. Remember seeing these years ago used by local lumberyards, sod companies and such for delivered things like loads of lumber, pallets, etc. And the height adjustment for loading the machine back onto the delivery truck. Be safe and stay well.
It needs to stay lightweight because it traverses across lawns to put bundles of shingles on a roof. At Lowe's they were called a Hoffman. Be careful! I enjoy your videos and don't want you getting hurt!
That is definitely a cool machine! Me and exhaust fumes dont agree. I got pretty sick from it 20 years ago,and now, even a few minutes i get a headache. Pipe bender, i agree its a game changer! Slick! Lowering wheels made it scary, glad you avoided injury. Be a handy rig. Just put all your stuff on pallets. I did, easy to move stuff.
So everyone has told you the whys and hows of this machine. For you I dont believe it will add anything to your operation but you should be able to resell it for a nice profit. A farmer or rancher that stacks big square or round bales would love that machine. Im in Texas and a friend of mine and I are custom balers, I would love this machine! Good luck and glad your ok!
It was made to mate on the back of a bobtail or simi trailer. The truck or trailer would have a mount that you would raise the unit up to and hook on to. At this point when you lowered the unit you would actually raise the wheels off the ground. Most of those things had ratchet style chain tensioners on either side with a length of chain welded to either side of the trailer to secure it to. From what I can see the fork boom is not duel action it's a standard chain lift. That would explain the lifting setup. So most likely the back of the truck or trailer had two hooks that looped under the frame of the spider lift when raised.
The forks hook into the back of the truck and they would lift the pallet lift up, the front wheels fold down and out of the way and then you would secure it with chain binders and plug the lights into the truck system and use then as lights for the truck since the lift would block the truck lights. I believe Home Depot still use a variant of these.
With extended forks with adjustable stoppers and chain hooks and trailer built from old parts from the yard, it could be decent helper in collecting old junk.
Brent, the forks slid into the bed then you would lower the forks to lift the truck up into a cradle. Made many a delivery with one when trucking. That is an oldie but a goodie.
Back in my day we called them hitchhikers, that arm is a lock to hold it on the trailer, video just started so I won't say much, but just know when it's running, everything you do will move something so hopefully you'll be setting on the seat as you explore it's functions
While working in west Texas the "O nan" motor was use on generators to power wireline trucks for loging oilwells. I would imagine it goes so high is to load it on the back of tractor trailor.
In the industry I believe that Spyder was the first of its kind but as a Mechanic we called them all Spiders. Many people were hurt and a few were killed trying to use them without proper training and improper use. Like any other piece of equipment, The metal does not care who it maims or kills?
Wow...scared me Brent! Thankfully you weren't injured. Guess it does what it was supposed to do. Seems it would be limited in versatility for a lot of different applications. Interesting piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing!
@24min you were in the load on tailgate mode, The work modw is with the spider at the front wheels as far forward as they go and the height as low as it goes
Hello there cowboy here again very nice I like it first of all the reason it legs go so high is because it's designed to lift pallets from a flat bed truck usually building supplies any where from drywall boards, cinder blocks , cement well you get the idea it can lift a ridicules amount of weight and move it around construction sites which are not always flat and level thus the tire's for all terrain it can be scary to operate on some site's especially when it wants to go sideways with a load up in the air just use common sense as to how you go across uneven terrain enjoy lol remember always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠🙏
Yes sir quite a unit it my come in handy for somethings around the yard my be with a little extentions know idea lol.Anywho great video no harm done to you or the spyder well done sir Brent

Newer models can drive forward, reverse, plus crab-walk left & right. Fork assembly extends, & retracts as well.

That spyder is a OK lifter for engines , pallets, and stuff you can get between the forks. It could be very useful when you learn its limits. Cant wait to see what you do with it ????? Stu in Ontario...............

Awesome on the exhaust tubing machine. Definitely a game changer.
That "Spider" is cool!
Always good to see a video from you in my feed. Stay safe out there.
My boss had one .he used it to deliver pallets of sod to customers for his buisiness.hauled it on a semi flatbed trailer.
I guess the height has something to do with scooting it up to go in the back of a flatbed.
Mainly just for lifting pallets of building materials?
My heart was in my mouth, Brent . . . but I laughed till I cried when I knew you were alright. So funny . . . a boys toy? Lol.
It goes that High to get mounted on the back of the delivery truck. I think you can get a user PDF Manual on the innerweb? They get between houses easily and carry a big load.....

Wow what an interesting contraption forklift..
That thing is so cool and there's so many awesome things you could build out of that just by adding stuff to it👍

Your joy while playing with this and the bender was fun to watch. Thanks for another great vid
Always heard our supply people calling them Donkeys. That one looks like it’s got an Onan engine powering it.
I would imagine it goes so
high is to load it on the back of tractor trailor.
Nice pick up by the way
In the industry I believe that Spyder was the first of its kind but as a Mechanic we called them all Spiders. Many people were hurt and a few were killed trying to use them without proper training and improper use. Like any other piece of equipment, The metal does not care who it maims or kills?
Glad you never came to grief , best give away.
Wow...scared me Brent! Thankfully you weren't injured. Guess it does what it was supposed to do. Seems it would be limited in versatility for a lot of different applications. Interesting piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing!
Haha, awesome! A bit tippy!
@24min you were in the load on tailgate mode, The work modw is with the spider at the front wheels as far forward as they go and the height as low as it goes
Glad u ok on tip over.😬⚠️ Thought you going grab off hydraulic struts to make your dump bed on the older Chevy pickup truck. 🤔
Powerful machine.
Yes sir quite a unit it my come in handy for somethings around the yard my be with a little extentions know idea lol.Anywho great video no harm done to you or the spyder well done sir Brent
these things still sell for few $ , perfect small forklift for you Brent, good for at least 3500lb
Well done. Got to test out your tubing bender and it should come in handy for lifting engines.
