  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Polydor 56048) Out of England, this tune composed by Al Kasha and Bob Gaudio was utilized as the theme song in the opening credits of the now cult classic film, 'Who Killed Teddy Bear?' starring Sal Mineo and Juliet Prowse. Premiering in September 1965, Kasha and Gaudio along with Charles Calello provided the soundtrack for the film and oddly, the vocalist featured on the title song was not noted in the credits. In July 1965, Variety magazine reported that Vi Velasco would sing the theme song in the picture and United Artists Records planned to issue it on a single release as well as include it on a soundtrack LP, both of which would sadly, never materialize. It has been since documented that a vocalist by the name of Rita Dyson provided the uncredited vocal performance of the stunning film version of the song during the opening sequence. A single version of 'Who Killed Teddy Bear?' was issued in December 1965 by Leslie Uggams on Atlantic Records as the flip side to 'Don't You Ever Care'. Across the pond, Claire Francis, who in early 1965 had transplanted herself there from New York City, was working as a producer with Polydor Records. One of her early productions was a nearly note for note copy of the motion picture version of 'Who Killed Teddy Bear?' by unknown vocalist, Mikki Young, which was released in the UK on Polydor Records in early January 1966. Very moody and somewhat James Bond Theme sounding, the record sadly, came and went without a trace. Claire Francis, would go on to produce at least 25 records, including her own during her tenure at Polydor. More recently, in 2007 an excellent cover version of this song was recorded by, Josie Cotton and is highly recommended.

I've been a fan of this song since I saw the film on TV in the 60's. Great song to an intriguing film.👍🏾 🎥🎞

Hi Anthony - I'm Joe Cates' grandson who directed the film and I've been following your RUclips channel avidly for some time now, so this came as a nice, really wild surprise today when this just popped up in my subscriptions, especially since I've been looking for this Mikki Young version for years! Mikki's vocal is pretty damn close to the film version - people have theorized that it's Joanie Soammers in the film which would make sense but I just don't buy it. Claire Francis is so great in her own right too, 'I Got My Own Thing Going' is such a unique, odd answer record to The Pied Piper. I don't know if you're a big Teddy Bear fan or anything, but if you're interested, I managed to track down the recording of "Born To Be Bad" from the film in my grandfather's archive at UCLA and would be happy to e-mail it to you. Allegedly Kasha himself did the vocal on that one!

      Hi Owen,
Thank you for taking the time to connect. I thought Joanie Sommers was possibly the singer on the film version as well. it has been claimed to be Vi Velasco which makes sense since she was working with those involved musically in the film in 1965. If so, they must have asked her to sing in a somewhat wistful, little girl style. I would be most appreciative for 'Born To Be Bad'. The background discotheque music was quite good in that film.
      Kind regards,
      Anthony Reichardt

I have a digitized copy of the original soundtrack version of this that I got from a friend of mine, complete with no edits, which I believe came from an EP that was made for in-lobby play only. So the complete original version actually is on vinyl somewhere if you can find it. Sound quality is somewhat better than the film.

Vi Velasco cut the song for the film. United Artists Records was scheduled to issue a single and soundtrack album but neither materialized.

Thank you for that musical tidbit about Vi Velasco. I enjoy ger VeeJay LP. The powers that were really missed the chance of a hit with her version. It's the best of all three in my opinion. .

Oh my what an amazing find. I'm afraid the Leslie Uggams one didn't do it for me. Claire Francis did a marvelous job recreating 'the movie sound' and a great middle eight where the movie mixes over. Poor Mikki Young an unknown doing her best to tread in Vi Velasco's shoes but Claire and her both pull off an exciting record and the nearest thing we have.
