I have drafted this journal several times before but never had the courage to actually post it, but now I think it's high time I did this.
This is a very difficult thing for me. I have had this on my mind for quite some time now and I have no doubt that it will be a very unpopular decision, but I think it's time I finally lay Super Mario Bros Z to rest. I have been fooling myself into thinking I would continue the series because part of me really wanted to see it finished. But the fact is, it is a time consuming process and I have grown tired of working on it. Sprite animation no longer has the same appeal to me as it did several years ago. What was once a fun hobby of mine has now turned into a chore from the constant demand, which clearly shows from the lack of updates since episode 8 was released. I could blame my lack of motivation on my monotonous job and the impatient fans. (Not saying all my fans are impatient, of course. I'm only referring to the vocal minority). I have been keeping the series on life-support this long, hoping that some day my creative spark would return to me. Unfortunately it never did.
In any case, I would like to thank everyone who stuck by the series this long. It really pains me to do this to all of you after years of false promises, but it's high time I gave myself a reality check.
With that said, this old account has no real purpose anymore since my furry artwork has migrated to my new account . I may leave this one inactive or just outright deactivate it. I haven't made my decision yet. I would greatly appreciate that you only watch my new account if you like the subject matter. I will not tolerate anything related to SMBZ being posted on it, or else you will be removed.

Yeah. All this hard work to create the episodes is very hard so he does deserve money. It's just I don't know how to pay him. I don't even know if I can. Everybody needs money and you can give him money for all the hard work he has done to make the nine episodes. I really like this series of Super Mario Bros Z. The animation is just so cool since he put a lot of work. I mean a lot of very hard work. It's always kind to give money to the people you like so why not. You might want to give him as much money as you want.

I may be shooting myself in the foot here, but I felt like sharing this.
As many of you know, on the 9th of October, it will officially be 4 years since I released Super Mario bros Z episode 8 to the masses. It'll also be almost 19 months since I officially laid SMBZ to rest.
But, with the assistance of a friend, I was able to reacquire Flash and felt like trying out sprite animation again to see if I could re-ignite my passion to work on the series. As practice, I remade the first scene of the first episode of SMBZ. After a few months working on and off, this is the result.
Super Mario bros Z Episode 1 Scene 1 Remake
Don't take this as confirmation that I will be working on the series again, but if I did, I would like to remake the series from the ground up. There were numerous things in the older episodes that I felt could have been done better. Namely the fight scenes, the story and the godawful dialogue. Here are some of the key changes I would implement.
1: Mecha Sonic will be replaced by Metallix.
For a supposed upgrade to Metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic was a visual downgrade. The design for Metallix just looks more imposing than the original faceless design. Metallix was going to appear later in the series anyway as Mecha Sonic's perfect form after he got all the Chaos Emeralds.
2: The Pipe maze episode will be removed
The whole episode in general was filler suggested by a fan of the series because I didn't know what to do for the 5th Chaos Emerald. With that said, I feel it was poorly executed on my part. It was too dialogue heavy. It spouted out unnecessary exposition that had no bearing on the plot. And who can forget the ridiculous Deus Ex Machina moment with Kolorado's stopwatch. The 8-bit parts were kinda cool, but to me it couldn't save it from being a bad episode.
3: Captain Basilisx won't be in the remake
While Basilisx was well received by fans, I feel he was shoehorned into the plot. He just showed up out of nowhere with no backstory or buildup. I feel that also distracted from the anticipation of Mecha Mario's appearance and would have undermined the upcoming battle against the Koopalings.
For the time being, these are just ideas. I want to make sure that I would be willing and committed to work on this series again. I don't want to cancel it twice. Until then, enjoy the practice animation.

Im no animator, but changing anything is stupid and a waste of time. No offence though, everything you did is perfect. Just because you dont like your work, doesnt everybody else doesnt. Everyone is SPEACHLESS with your amazing work. Nobody really wants the series REMADE after waiting for 4 years -_-

Oh man... i don't care about the changes, i just care that the series GO ON, man, who knows, maybe it could be better!
... But... Why Basilix is out? he is for me one of the tree most badass in the series (He, Mecha Sonic and Shadow) That's the only change that i don't like at all, if the problem is his backstory or build up, heck, DO A BACKSTORY OF HIM TYPE-FLASHBACK IN THE REMAKE AND IT'S DONE, anyway, i really hope that alvin keep working in the series.
With the benefit of hindsight, it was obvious that Luigi was going to save Mario. But damn, that shot of him breaking free of the curse and blindsiding Basilisx is amazing.
You'd be surprised before episode 9 came out how many people thought Shadow would just show up. Nobody ever guessed it would have been Luigi and the tanooki's powers

SMBZ ended, but SMBGT just got started. Look it up, the serie is maybe gonna be just as good (or maybe better) as SMBZ

@epitome The creator straight up ripped scenes from other animators. Most famously copying Mario Bros Z plots and fight scenes and Hero's of the Stars. Other animations like one minute melee were also cut, but he didn't even bother revamping some scenes. There's a video that shows what was copied and what the differences are. Check it out.

There may never be a proper continuation to this, but as far as I'm concerned, I always get an immense amount of gratification seeing Basilix get whats coming to him by Luigi.

He was almost at the end, too. There is only two chaos emeralds left, and even though Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Sonic are on the ship, Shadow is looking for the last two, so it would only be like 2 or 3 more episodes. I would have just finished it anyway, because its so popular.
Actually, the series was going to have more than 50 episodes.
Season 1 was planned to have 18 episodes total

It has now been a decade since the release of this video and I am still hoping for it to finish it someday. I'll wait another decade if I have to.

The creator eventually decided to make a reboot of the series and it's still being worked on. Episode 1 and 2 released on Mark Haynes's youtube channel. We'll eventually get to the completed episode 9+10

Many years later and this series is still phenomenal in 2019! I am grateful with that Alvin has left us with. I was really looking forward to Mecha Mario but I understand things happen. Thank you again Alvin, wherever you are.

From 2020, now an adult working to pay my bills and the roof over my head, and still I reminisce, and with unwarranted hope, check back to see if the series would ever conclude.
Well, the reboot has returned and we will have our conclusion. And of course, Basilisx won't appear in this episode. The heroes will fight Kamek, Kammy and Koopalings in the reboot instead of Basilisx, then Mecha Mario.
And Basilisx will return, in Smithy Saga.
That is cool to hear. Though it is a shame that the original series will never get its conclusion.

I went searching on RUclips for these videos because i was feeling nostalgic and to show a friend who never heard of them and to my surprise I found this episode 9. After reading the description I'm happy to have closure and to hear that he's moved on and hopefully doing well. SMBZ was fun for the time and I'm happy that I got to experience it when I did, I will always look back fondly on it knowing that the Creator enjoy the work he did and didn't give in to demand SMBZ will forever be an internet sensation for the love he put behind it and this 3 min piece was a nice end to an era.

Erik Arellano-Luna Editing the animations is fun... I was 7 when i first saw SMBZ and i wanted to do things like that! But if you look up on my channel, i'm not that advanced yet... But i made some new steps on my animation that i'm working on right now!

While I am looking forward to the rest of the reboot series to come out, part of me wishes that at some point, the original series will have the finale we all wanted too. Mark worked on eight full episodes, and part of a ninth. I think everyone kinda wants to see Basilix and Mecha Sonic to have the defeat they deserve, and I think everyone eventually has a happy ending.
I'd like to think he's still going to portray his original vision, but with a lot more detail and polish this time around
This is a gift of the highest order for any flash animation fan. There are so many flash animation fans who dream about seeing the series they were nostalgic about return, but they never see it happen. They'll never be truly satisfied by the parodies and tributes and in their hearts they'll know it's because it's not by the original creator.
And even if they do see it come back, years down the line, the creator's style may have changed so much it may not even be in the same format. It might even go from 2D to 3D.
The fact is, I thought this series met a hard and fast end with episode 8. The scene of Basilisk ready to chop mario's head off was burned into my mind as the end, the eternal cliffhanger of the series. It might still be if this weren't made back then, right after episode 8, but instead by a changed Alvin-Earthworm, years later.
But with this, that's changed. For a moment, It's like I'm just there again, continuing the series as per usual.
And that is a true gift to a fan like me. Thank you so much for posting this.

It really makes me feel sad/old/nostalgic to rewatch this and think about how watching it as a kid, every time one of these would be released I was so excited. Here I am in the adult world now, and I still wish there was resolution. This series was such a huge deal to me when I was a kid, and adult me still loves it, and wishes that I, along with the other fans could see the end. Lots of love and lots of nostalgia
Well this was a joy to watch up to this point. It's a shame that Alvin couldn't continue the work, but I understand. When demand out-lasts desire it's no longer a joy to work on a project. I've thrown out a few characters of my own that that had happened to, so I understand. One can only hope that he finds the inspiration later, or gives his resources to someone he trusts to carry the series forward. Either way, this was/is an amazing series. I loved it dearly

I know it came down to passion, but if it were a simply a financial issue I personally would be more than happy to help fund this amazing series. Alvin is a genius of animation and fight choreography and its a shame his dream was never realized

I'm so sad I found this so late...the creator has amazing talent to be inspired or jealous of. I sadly understand the pain of losing passion for something you saw and had as awe-inspiring and just fun to do. I can only hope that with whatever he is accomplishing nowadays that hes doing them with a smile, and if not may he have many to support him through his hard times because I know if I had a chance to meet him I would cherish him every chance I got. 😔😊

Those who still try to rectreate this to make it live on, keep it up. This series may ended here but i am sure it won't be burried. It'll be remembered and cherished among and i hope many share their own stories and series that they love. For now, i just put it on 'rewatch' and inspire myself to create my own ideas someday. Definitely will support any creator if i find them.
Its a shame that this series has been discontinued, I was really looking forward to each episode.

I know he’s working on the series again, but I remember when I first saw this when it came out when he wasn’t working on the series anymore I was sad. Plus the music in the shadow section kinda made it sound like it was the end at the time. But at least he rebooted the series and working on it again!

SMBZ is without question one of the best things to ever hit the internet. Even a year later, I hold on to hope that Alvin will one day regain his zeal for the amazing work he put into this series. Just remember, man: For every fan that demanded you release a new episode, you had a dozen that would've bitch-slapped them for being pricks. Please consider coming back one day.

Although that silly conversation wouldn't have ever happened, I think you are absolutely SPOT-ON with how the outcome of this battle would have played out. Someone would have definitely came to Shadow's aid, and Daisy isn't a bad choice, and that confusion with Peach would have made for an entertaining bout. Perhaps another candidate would be Rosalina? Maybe Shadow is told about the Star Spirits afterward? Lastly, that bit where he's given the emerald before departing is a great touch. Anyway, thanks for putting into words how this battle would have most likely played out since, you know, Shadow finding the emerald mid-battle would have been lame and Mecha Sonic sparing Shadow would have been stupid.
I watched the series again recently..still amazed at the quality of animation that went into this. Yes it's a shame it never finished but we must at least be thankful for the episodes we do have and the true fans will remember the series as a massive success and inspiration to make other animators. Whatever Alvin Is doing now hopefully he's okay.

Honestly, I’m glad he’s rebooting the series. His original story had a lot of flaws and plot holes, and here it doesn’t make sense that Luigi can just magically transform himself out of being *turned* to stone by someone else
It does make sense. The Tanuki Suit can turn you into stone or out of stone. It makes complete sense and is a clever way to resolve this. The original series has issues but this is not one of them.
Just have to accept that there isn’t and ending and there never will be an ending. What I’m wondering is how is there no one who has taken it upon themselves to continue it? I know there is that one where mario and Luigi defeat basilisx but that project seems to be abandoned. If by any chance, a mildly skilled animator is reading this, PLEASE continue it.
I'd say I'm a pretty decent animator, but when it comes to fights, I can't match the awesome choreography he has. Maybe if I practiced trying to match his style it could work, but it'd take a ton of motivation. A lot of people also have no idea where the story would go after Basilisx is defeated, and I'm no great storyteller myself lmao
Krusper thanks for the reply. I strongly encourage you to stick with animation because knowing it can give you a lot of potential. If you ever do decide to continue SMBZ, some unreleased parts of the story can be found the on SMBZ fan wiki. Good luck with your future animations!
EDIT: after watching some of your animations, I was very impressed! I quite liked Luigi vs Kirby and the fight had excellent rhythm to it. Good job!

I have drafted this journal several times before but never had the courage to actually post it, but now I think it's high time I did this.
This is a very difficult thing for me. I have had this on my mind for quite some time now and I have no doubt that it will be a very unpopular decision, but I think it's time I finally lay Super Mario Bros Z to rest. I have been fooling myself into thinking I would continue the series because part of me really wanted to see it finished. But the fact is, it is a time consuming process and I have grown tired of working on it. Sprite animation no longer has the same appeal to me as it did several years ago. What was once a fun hobby of mine has now turned into a chore from the constant demand, which clearly shows from the lack of updates since episode 8 was released. I could blame my lack of motivation on my monotonous job and the impatient fans. (Not saying all my fans are impatient, of course. I'm only referring to the vocal minority). I have been keeping the series on life-support this long, hoping that some day my creative spark would return to me. Unfortunately it never did.
In any case, I would like to thank everyone who stuck by the series this long. It really pains me to do this to all of you after years of false promises, but it's high time I gave myself a reality check.
With that said, this old account has no real purpose anymore since my furry artwork has migrated to my new account . I may leave this one inactive or just outright deactivate it. I haven't made my decision yet. I would greatly appreciate that you only watch my new account if you like the subject matter. I will not tolerate anything related to SMBZ being posted on it, or else you will be removed.
Thanks again for all the support (or hatred) you have given me throughout the years.
