Your flute playing is incredible. I love your control of all the overtones.

Please excuse my automatic, software translation first- - - - - Merveilleux! - - - - - - Wonderful! When I was a child I swung a singing, flexible tube around in the air. Nothing but a tube, no reed or valve. The harder and faster you swung it, causing more air to move more swiftly across the end of the tube and/or through (?) the tube, the song would rise in harmonic intervals. The tube was ribbed. I do not know if that directly affected the outcome much, or if it just helped the flexibility. I will make this flute!

This is my new favorite channel!
I make instruments for myself and my daughter, who is 3. I wish I could play them half as well as I make them, though, maybe I should set my musical goals a little higher. Fortunately, it isn't difficult to entertain a 3-year old. I make mostly 1-string ukulele and banjo-style instruments. I have built a few flutes, but whereas I can play my banjos well enough to entertain myself and a young child, with my wind instruments I can't play them even to entertain myself, and after a while my daughter asks me to stop. So it's been difficult to build up enough skill with flutes to even enjoy practicing... I have a few other instruments I'm working on. I'm building a glockenspiel using steel gas pipes for the bars (sound is great). I made a partially working concertina using a PVC piston to serve the same function as a bellows. The sound is good, too, but the button valves have been difficult and unreliable, so it's unusable. I have a few other works in progress but they have not gotten to the stage where I can get them to sound. I have a propane flame powered trumpet sort of thing, but I can't figure out a fire-proof valve system to get different notes out of it. It actually makes more useful and interesting percussive popping sounds when the flames pop out after shutting off the gas.

Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial about building PVC-overtone-flutes here on youtube.
I never thought that it might be possible to create an instrument with simplest means which sounds so good, just like the genuine wooden flutes that I saw on youtube-videos!
After tuning on B (123Hz) my flute has got the size of 132 cm in length with an inner-diameter of 29 mm.
That I can open and close the end of the flutepipe with the free hand I had to add an air-detour from the original mouthpiece to half of the length of the flute - like a Fujara or the big wooden bass-overtone-flutes.
Initially the sound was a little too soft and quiet - so I widened the windway in the mouthpiece a tiny little bit, about half a millimeter more, by honing down the visible rounding of the inserted wooden cylinderblock in the pipe with sandpaper. The fipple worked right away according to your measures and instructions (that’s really great!)
Now first of all I have to learn to play that flute - because it is an absolutely new experience for me, playing a flute.
My personal, real Instruments are didgeridoos, which I also build by myself from trunks that I find in nature or public garden waste places. Here an example:
    ruclips.net/video/ErcZE0TJNyQ/видео.html
If the flute-playing fits me well, I will try to build a wooden one later on.
Again - thank you so much!

ok - this one is especially for you - although I cannot play it yet, just make noise - I had it recorded this evening - as my kind of "thank you !"
      ruclips.net/video/NAaOt0b8r04/видео.html
If you are interested you can find other postings with me and my selfmade instruments by searching for
      norbert didgeridoo
      or norbert scheitholt
Scheitholt is a medieval string instrument which sounds very nice - the french pendant is the "épinette des vosges" - perhaps you know it?
ruclips.net/video/YMxxJQceiu8/видео.html - how do you find my invention of cat-motives for the sound-holes?
ruclips.net/video/LAdk6eAMKlw/видео.html - the big grey-haired one in the front-middle, that's me with my selfmade Scheitholt among all these noble Mountain-Dulcimers.
Here my grandson tests my (at that time) almost completed "krin", an african log-drum out of a piece of oak-trunk

    1. make an instrument that plays odd harmonics
    2. make 3 similar instruments based on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics of the first instrument
    3. make 3 similar instruments based on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics of the instruments from Step 2
    etc
Notes are allowed to repeat at a ratio of 3, 5, or 7, but no octaves!

I have been doing for the better part of this century. I haven't made a multi-flute yet, but 4 or more meters of pipe is one fun hack. When blowing a low note steady everyone can hear your heartbeat modulating the tone. My preferred length is 4 to 8 feet (feet is a physical musical standard, it's C) shaped like a big letter J reaching to the floor. The end is easy to close, shade, and slap for lots of expression! I use up to 1 inch and a half (40mm) pipe and heat bend a smooth 180 degree turn. I have a heater and wood mold to make plastic pipes that look just like metal diapason organ. The wedge mouth bottom helps correct for inharmonicity. One version has the upper lip movable.

    • @NicolasBras
      @NicolasBras  7 лет назад

Merci!
