sean - the cynic drummer told me at one of their shows that paul was not feeling well at this radio interview. he said he didn't want to play and his voice felt weird that day, but when asked he agreed to give it a shot and just did one take of the song. considering he was really sick i think he sounds great and even more vulnerable. a weak note here or there who cares the performance is honest and the song is amazing ! *--* !
he has a very unique voice. very smooth but also raw without the vocoder. the flat vocals are strangely fitting and don't seem to hinder the performance at all. love it.
God, from "How Could I" staff to this absolutely stunning music. I love both early and last Cynic ("Kindly" is an amazing album), but this instantly takes me to some absolutely perfect place.. Thanks Paul.
No, you're not the only one! I love this. Masvidals voice is perfect for this, just love how it sounds, the feeling of vulnerability. And their music is even more varied, more mature and just as interesting as it always has been. They deserve all the success they can get.
I would have to agree with this guy as a musician, Akerfledt is a great guitarist but Masvidal is better. Not only is he a much more technical guitar player, (not saying Opeth's stuff is easy but a lot of it is for me anyway) Though at the same time, Cynic pretty much invented the technical/progressive death metal. Just this song alone is very hard to pull off, and he's playing finger-style.
Jamal Williams, to sing and play itself is difficult. On top of that this is really impressive (the fact that he played fingerstyle and sang). It's so tough, you can hear him goof up for a moment.
i simpli loved this song, its work of an artist, the songs that paul writes are unique, every one has a lesson to teach, at least for me. So inspiring musically and literally.
it really doesn't matter if the vocals are off tune for several reasons: first of all it takes the pressure off ME whenever I'm performing it myself - another reason is: it is the composition of the song that is impressive - anyone can sing and play, but only someone who has something important to disclose can write a song like this - thanks Paul!!!
His vocals are just 90% infinitely perfect. However 90% infinitely perfect = 100% infinitely perfect Please Paul, do not chance an inch in your way of singing! One of the best vocals I ever heard, so much truth and emotion.
Have you met him to back up this point? I met him in a bar and he was really lovely. He could have easily told me to go away but he was glad to talk to fan for a while.
@iamrichlol its a nylon string acoustic. that woody sound comes from nylon strings. there plenty of good nylon strings out there, made by Martin, Yamaha..... the Ibanez Galvador is a good one.
@rutherk1g I guess it's a part of progression and growth? I discovered them when Traced In Air came out and I fucking love them. I heard their earlier work later and made me appreciate them even more. I don't think they lost themselves though.. it's still pretty amazing music..
Blackwater Park came out 11 years ago, marks their half way point in album releases, and is when akerfeldts writing started to get really really good. If you stopped there then you've never really listened to Opeth.
I'm a composer who works closely with 3 really good drummers, one from South Korea, one from South Africa and one from here whose mom is a jazz pianist, I didn't want to really compare cynic and tool from the start i just dont like seeing people bashing tool and saying one is better than the other. I know different styles of drumming and some drummers drum melodically like danny carey, some drum traditionally like buddy rich. Sean is great but it isnt about technique, its about sound.
@Underlopex8 Ever :$! Cynic la primera banda prog. de la vida y los que más amaré del genero for life :$... xD! no caché que tenía tantos votos positivos x)
I heard all of them and i listened to Death before cynic. They sound different. I never said i just heard traced in air. I'm a huge cynic fan. And yeah cynic was doing shit earlier before too but, tool had leaps in their albums. They changed during their Aenema release but it start getting super crazy till Laeteralus. I dont think you should compare neither drummer. I'm just doing it because I dont like people bashing on tool, nor do i like people bashing cynic
@CtrlRm Because unlike them he cares about what he writes and writes it with the intent of sending a message. Not trying to make a quick buck and party. Cynic and most Progressive metal is like this, and for that reason, they will unfortunately never be popular or on MTV. However the people that do hear what they have to say and the songs that they make, will be touched and better for it.
@SOIBand You miss the point dude. Re-traced is not here to "advance" Cynic's music. It's just a reinterpretation of some songs. And most of them (like integral) are just a kind of backbone for what you can hear on Traced in Air. Re-traced is not a new EP, it's more a kind of side project.
Too hard to both play the guitar and sing such a song. It’s not a limit of his, just imagine singing Blood on the Rooftops by Genesis while playing the guitar too. Impossible
To Eradicateify...dude this is towards your comment saying that cynic just recently started using african/indian rythmns. Cynic used those rythmns back in focus album man. Cynic in focus(93' 94') was already doing badass prog/metal/jazz/fusion bro. At that time tool was making highschool tunes. Cynic is better musically/lyricaly/technically and are capable of making brutal ass metal if you haven't heard cynics 90 91 demos you haven't heard shit. Don't judge a band on one album mr composer.
you're right about cynic's music not being as polyrhythmic (they do have some polyrhythms in several songs, but it's not a dominant element in their music like in tool's). Versatile singer? who cares... cynic uses a fucking vocoder in order to minimalize the focus the listener puts on the vocals rather than the music itself. More versatile drummer? Sean reinert is a fucking legend in his technique and creative playing, you cannot say carey is better. Sean plays jazz fusion and death metal (cont)
I'm musician too, and yes it's all subjective :) but if u look carefully at what u wrote u could see "Opeth is linear" and "Akerfeldt songwriting is typical and also structured very simply" then u say i's varied expecially if u look at the entire discography, so i cant understand, is it linear and simple or varied and complex? ^^ however i understand your point,
with his own unique playing style. They're both amazing drummers and I'm not even saying sean is "better", but saying that carey is more versatile is just plain wrong.
i like Paul Masvidal as a guitarist better than Adam Jones when it comes to guitar playing and solos, but i dont hear him use minimalism. I like the bassist of Cynic more than Tool's too. But Danny Carey is scary, hes up there with Thomas Haake, and Buddy Rich. I think Sean fucking awesome dont get me wrong so is Cynic, but i dont like how people compare bands, you cant really do it at all.
These lyrics are incredibly cryptic.... really odd and moving, this whole song has something otherworldly about it, the melody and key changes are just bizarre

This performance drives me to tears. So beautiful.

I love this version.
I will not lie. I like Cynic not being that known to the world...It makes the music more beautiful for its secrecy! An immersion of the soul.
This kind of music just touches you somewhere deep. Making you feel almost vulnerable.
This was really really really beautiful.
Excellent, Paul...beautiful piece.

I really love the guitar work specifically, it is very inspiring to me as a guitar player.
I bought my first acoustic guitar five years ago, hoping to learn to play this. I still can't get it right, but god damn he makes it look so easy.
Those stretches are no joke on a classical guitar
good voice...full of feelings....
Definitivamente un gran maestro!!!!!
I like your vibe. Leaves one wondering, wanting more.
Reconfortante... por siempre, Masvidal mi gran inspiración :).
Met the guys back in 92' when we (Embrionic) were playing a show in Hempstead.
Have loved this video since 2011, with imperfect singing and all

with or without mistakes, this is an amazing song and a great performance!

indeed. one mistake in an otherwise flawless performance
I'm really anxious for the new album.

About the mistakes, it just sounds real. The song is as perfect as we are as humans. A beautiful reflection of the soul this song is...
Beautiful..
Amazing!! Love you Paul :D

this one of the best think than i have read!!!My god i think than will be an amazing album :D

tool's lyrics are pretty insane. musically, they're less technical, but they're amazing musicians as well.

@Pakanahymni I would tend to disagree. I don't think either is better than the other. It's art man.
(cont 2) drummer, because it does take a drummer to appreciate the technical stuff drummers do, and boy is sean fucking technical as fuck.
@jazzbuckeye listen to aeonspoke
@kenthley Turn up your speakers.

Opeth is one of my favourite band until Black water park.
Ah, yes! I completely forgot that album's existence.
Epic!

That's his point. He means on the track it should've been like it is in this video.

nope, at playing guitar in general. it's not a case that he played for death with schuldiner.
maybe my bad english is causing a misunderstanding. i like opeth, from orchid to black water park.
