  • I was looking for something else on my engine, and happened to notice my serpentine belt was HORRIBLY frayed. So I hunted high and low for help on how to fix this little issue. when I found out what I needed to know I made a video to help others. AGAIN not a professional installation, But a serpentine belt is ALMOST idiot proof :)

No need for two people, I use a bungee cord attached to the top of the belt and then to the hood this allows you to pull down and move the belt around and when you let go the slack is gone.

I just replaced my belt a few hours ago and there isn't a tension adjustment.
You get what you get from a hydrolic tensioner.
Either the belt was cheaply made or the tension just isn't quite enough to keep the right amount of tension. with condensation comes slippage and then premature belt fatigue in a much shorter amount of time than the norm.(theory at the moment) I popped a gates on there and she's good to go.
I appreciate the video.. a heads up is always usefull :) Thanks!

@marek0086 Actually I'm really glad you questioned about this. This was an issue I had. The belt RECOMMENDED is like the wrong size, like if you picked it up at an autozone, I went and got a belt a half inch or inch bigger. I insisted they changed it in their computers.. but yeah.. that didnt happen. but I've been running a longer belt for some 7 months.

Got a 120,000 miles on my Celicas serp belt. Def looking forward to replacing it. Thanks for the vid! I couldn't find a Timing Belt. Must be built in the engine I guess.

Thanks for posting this! very helpfull. I Was able to do this by myself without removing the tire. though would have been easier with a secong person.

@TazBadBoy18 Actually I spent about 15 mins looking for it myself. I even starting backing out a bolt holding the entire tensioner pulley before my brother was like oh hey you just pull on this nut shaped fixture right here... 15 min install.. and they charge you 199.99$ for a replacement at the dealer.. Simple install man.

Im sure you could adjust the tensioner, but theres wasnt a need for it. and everything is subject to failure. serp belts can be damaged by oil, debris.. etc. You could believe its a design flaw, but I replaced mine and now 30k mile later, no signs of any trouble. I check it periodically for signs of wear or fraying.

hey quick question, im in the process of getting my car ready to be modded, but i can't figure out the size of some pulleys, its a corolla with the same 1zzfe engine, and no matter where i look i can't find sizing of all the accessory pulleys you wouldn't happen to have these written down, from what i read, i need a set of verniers to measure them, but i can't get access to a set where i am atm!

Nope, they changed suppliers in 2005.. Garbage belts..
Several others from what I've read stated the same thing about slippage
and the tensioner design not allowing for any tension adjustment.

You don't need two people if you have patience. Unfortunately after jacking up my car and removing the old belt I realized the new belt they gave me did not match.. :(

@marek0086 Calm down.. The belts have lengths, there is no way I'd be able to remember a parts number. Call your local auto stores. Return your belt. ASK for a belt a half inch to inch bigger. IF they dont have it. Get the length of that belt and go check other stores. It'll turn up.

Hi,anyone know if celica GTS uses same belt as This GT...i know my valve cover is longer and had to pickup another valve cover gasket since the GT valve cover gasket i ordered was way to small....thanks

So you can't dial in the tension the way you want it on these?
You just let go and that's what you get?
I was amazed that my belt is shot at less than 30K where I've had 120K belts look far better than what they used on my 08 Corolla 1ZZ-FE..
I think this is a design flaw because the tension isn't enough and the belts slip and wear out faster..
