He was clearly exceptionally talented and possessed a vision for his music that bordered on obstinacy: not only had he produced, arranged, performed every instrument and composed all but one song on his 1978 debut album For You, he had also somehow contrived to get a record contract with Warner Brothers that entitled him to complete artistic control, almost unheard of for a new artist.
But he was also a strange, shy, awkward figure, apparently unwilling to play the promotional game. His interviews were almost wilfully unrevealing; an early appearance on that venerable US music TV institution American Bandstand was such a disaster that host Dick Clark later claimed Prince was the most difficult artist he’d ever encountered on the show. How could anyone so apparently unwilling to play the game ever hope to make it?
But the strangeness and reticence that characterised his early interactions with the media were anything but a hindrance: he used them entirely to his advantage, turning himself into a genuinely mythic, unknowable figure in the process. His interviews were spectacularly unforthcoming about anything other than his music. He developed his own shorthand in which all his songs were written - U for you, “eye” instead of I - and at one point, he changed his name to a symbol: for a time, you were either supposed to refer to him as Victor or The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. “I am something that you’ll never understand.”

They all understood it more than anyone Margi, that's why they were loyal to him.
It's one thing to know that on paper and another to live it 24/7. You can literally be in love with someone and be unable to be with this person with suffering as well.
If you haven't been in the industry there really is no true understanding of what this feeling is, I'm afraid. And yes, you want to tour with people you professionally get along with extremely well, but not so close much close friends. Keep friends that are out of the industry as well. That's a key piece of advice!

A lot of sour grapes you hear on this one. A man who helped them all receive the name they were able to get work with. They are who they are because a man had a vision for all of them. He walked through the door with one mission in mind. To be the best. Prince is a fighter. He wasn't going to back down. I could imagine when Andre left he was docile about that. I lost a good friend in my group who I started with in show business. It changed me as well. But, we have to go on. Prince inspired me back in New York. I started doing all this coaching and training my friends to do great things. It happened. I didn't play all them instruments like Prince. But, I was inspired to be great at something.

Matt Fink's statement about the solo on "head' really stands out here. I grew up a HUGE Prince fan. He was My favorite, partly because in my mind "He can Do it ALL"! Of maybe he can but, that solo on head had me saying "whoa Prince is Baaad on those keyboards", ok he is BUT THAT WAS FINK that impressed me...... i dont. its very clear he's very difficult to work with at times and he was horrible to the ppl he worked with. but the results speak on their own. you dont produce greatness by being soft all the time. in prince's later years, if you ever listen to the later bands he formed on how he operated he was more forgiving, relaxed and not as forceful. young prince wanted to show only the best and give great results, older prince was a seasoned master who didnt need to prove anything but to keep playing and experimenting.

I remember the attention Morris and Jerome received from the press, media, TV, music mags etc. and how Morris and Jerome, stole the movie. When I saw Purple Rain at the theater in LA, I forget the name of the theater but it was at the USC adjacent 'Village' outdoor mall, IN 1984, when The Time appeared on screen to perform I'm telling you, the Black youth got UP and started dancing and I was like in the middle of a concert! So that kind of thing you know... may have bothered Prince a bit. So much so he did his own dynamic duo with Jerome in UTCM I think to prove he could be funny in the same way, that amongst other ideas and hidden meanings. Anyway. I came out of that theater a fan of Prince more so than The Time, but I liked it ALL. I was convinced!

@@Sinnik22 Yes, I was somewhat aware that. I guess I tend to look at things differently. I feel if I was in Prince shoes I would have tossed them another check to be fair. Prince paid millions for his studio after the movie right? Apollonia only got $30,000 and Morris Day $50,000 just seems really small. I see why Vanity left because he only offered her $5,000. Don't get me wrong. I understand Prince being on a budget but he at least should have paid an aftermath from his large gains to the main acts. But I heard he did right his wrongs before he died.

No they wouldn't look like him and dance in heels like him but still dominate and sell the parts of the Minneapolis sound they create without HIM seeming like the MASTER. lol And I'm saying this a a Prince fan. Prince gave them a band, wrote their songs, took them on tour and put them in a movie. The movie took about 40 days to make and I'm sure Morris didn't divide the money 7 ways, lol. And even if he did that's about 7grand each for a month's work back in 1983. 50,000 grand is equivalent to $138,000 today for a month's work with no experience, so that's 20 grand a piece if divided evenly, which I doubt Morris did.

Yes Prince was all that and bag of chicks, 😀a super supreme musical genius and child prodigy! He was my idol and one of the biggest reasons I started playing and I play multiple instruments too!! 👀
However, he’s still human prone to error, mistakes and being an asshole..
Again.. he stiffed Morris and and it wasn’t rite. Morris only ended up with only 17k by the way!!
But the problem is not how far fifty grand went back then or whether or not they had acting skills are you really this dense??
All that is irrelevant, the people that he stiffed had to hire lawyers. And guess what Eisenstein?? Lawyers cost money! Lots of 💰 so think and use your nogin.
Gessh, I feel sorry for you, but the first problem is that Morris shouldn’t have had to pay them out of that money! It wasn’t I’m the original contract and he did the same thing to Brown Mark when he left.. same shyt different day in fact he was known to stiff people. He stiffed at least five people, during his stent. Although Bobby Z said that he paid him 50k a year and at the end of the purple rain tour gave them each a million dollar 💰bonus. 💯👍By the time Rosie Gains came around she was making $2,000 a week!!😉
So that’s definitely an upside to how he treated others, a milli is equal to about 2.7 mill today..
Also you’d have to be pretty dense to not know that Prince was sick 😷 I mean he practically came out and said it: who writes a memoir at that stage in life, who sends out tweets that says: “Just when you think you were safe”! It will eventually come out and the truth will become known, he was hooked on opioids sure. But he was already in decline and dying..
