Throughout Illinois, I'm not sure if other states do the same, if there are average everyday thunderstorms on the first Tuesday of the month, certain areas will either do a quick 10-15 second run. Other towns, and villages will skip the test. If there's a warning on that day, over certain towns, cities, or villages, the sirens will stay on if there's any rotation noticed by spotters.
It always says "this is just a test first." They would say " this is a tornado warning/watch. Do not panic. Get to the nearest shelter." WooooWeeeeeWooooWeeee
it's strange seeing so many people who haven't heard these, I remember as a kid everyone always getting super excited on Tuesday to hear the sirens haha
@Maggie K I hear them every first tuesday of the month. I've also heard the montello 10 pm curfew siren. It's on the fire department in montello. It's a two layer one that has sirens in a full circle.
Sirens are useful no matter if we have cell phones or not. It’s an easier way of letting thousand of people know all at the same exact time that something is going on. Unlike cell phones we have to actually receive the notification and have to actually read it.
Chicago Aussie that’s true but we also don’t pay attention to our phone alerts either or if we ever receive them. I along with others don’t receive reliable alerts on our phones even if we enable this feature. Sirens whether your phone works or not you will hear it and if there is an actual tornado happening nobody is going to ignore it. So sirens will always continue to exist in some form or another at least I hope they do. Technology is unreliable these are way more consistent and reliable.
Was a few weeks ago we had a tornado warning. I was in our local urban park mountain biking. We got the phone notifications first which was one thing, but when the local sirens fired up that's when things got real. Sirens > Cell phone notifications.
Half true cell phones are built to receive certain sounds when there’s an amber alert. It would be cool if cell phones just had a small message like ALERT FIND SHELTER THIS IS NOT A TEST ALERT THIS IS A TEST
Chicago Aussie they should really revamp their system, then! I live on the far north side of Chicago, about 30 mins away from downtown Chi, and I swear I can't hear these things... I'll be listening for it today!
last place I lived at while I was in Chicago had one of these sirens maybe 150 feet from my window. there was no sleeping in on the first Tuesday of the month. your videos help with my homesickness, thank you! and please keep them coming!
Even with Alerts that people can get on their phones, I still don't see the siren system ever really going away. The reason for this is because a siren warning can be delivered just as quickly and in a multitude of conditions where cellphone or mobile data may not be working such as a power outage caused by a major storm or a major system failure of the cell network. However, you mentioned in your video how in the 1940s, citizens would head for shelter once they hear the sirens and tune the radio for information. This is where I think the age of cell phones will really help. Today people can hear the sirens, get to shelter, and wait for push alerts on their device (of course, assuming the device is working).
Also Cellphones can often have Dead Zones, and if you live in a dead zone and you don't get an EAS or Phone alert and they discontinued sirens, then you'd be fucked
I live in MN, and push alerts for severe weather dont' hit my phone sometimes till 3-5 minutes after the sirens blow or longer... They're SO much more reliable.

This was all very interesting to me, because I grew up in the near western suburb of Maywood, not far from the city of Chicago itself. Around the years 1961-63 the one that was close to us went off on a daily basis at 5 or 6 PM Monday thru Friday. I remember this because as kids we relied on it to let us know when it was time to go home for dinner. We got out of school at 3, got home at 3:15, greeted our mothers, then went out to play. Once we heard that siren we would all disperse and go home for dinner. It was like clock work. I never knew where that siren was exactly. It seem to come from a north-easterly direction. Regardless, the siren was a part of our growing up in Chicago, and its sound was no more ominous to us than the voices of our mothers calling us home.

as a former Chicagoan now residing in Phx since 2008, the sound of the siren in this video seriously triggered such anxiety. I survived the Plainfield Tornado in 1990 and had many other close calls over the years. I am deathly afraid of tornadoes!
You should do a video about Old Chicago, an Indoor amusement park in Bolingbrook which existed for just five years from 1975 to 1980. Despite this short time of operation it still has a great deal of nostalgia with people who had visited there. My parents tell me stories of fun times with family and friends there. It seems like an interesting topic that every Chicagoan knows of, but little about.
The modulators in Chicago's siren system run on the noticeably different and somewhat off-putting Alternate Wail tone during tornado warnings, often mistaken for being broken. Recordings of the siren have been uploaded to RUclips, with the videos reaching millions of views. Many people refer the Modulator as the "Chicago Siren" or the "Scary Tornado Siren" due to the unsettling nature of the tone.
My town had an air raid system for the same reason. The only realy time it was used, was to announce "no school". If a winter snowstorm was bad enough, they would run the air raid sirens. The storm would have to be particularly bad, but it was used. So yeah, as a little kid, we used to love hearing the air raid sirens in the winter, it meant no school and play in the snow.
Can confirm as I used to live in Waukegan, where they did have an air raid siren sound at 10AM 1st Tuesday of the month. As a kid, that always scared me.
Idk why, but I love the sound of these kind of sirens. It gives me comfort. It's probably because I live in a small neighborhood and I live near the fire station (where the siren is located).
I live in MO where we have monthly tests of our tornado sirens every Wednesday. Near KCMO, we don't have enough. I rarely hear them (if ever), whereas my parents house is located rather close to one and the test can be heard every Wednesday at about 11 AM. I think more should be installed where necessary in addition to mobile alerts. It needs to be noisy everywhere so we know what the hell is going on.
Wait... the ones you can see on the pole in the background look like regular megaphones. Does anyone think that they could be used to broadcast ANY sound, not just *ALERT* sounds?
Are these kinds of sirens not common in the rest of the country? I grew up in the South suburbs and there are sirens in every town and all over. After college I moved to Peoria and it's the same here, sirens everywhere that are tested on the first Tuesday of the month. I always assumed that everywhere did this for bad weather / disasters and attacks.
Here in the Midwest US, especially in Wisconsin, every municipality has sirens. We just call them tornado sirens as that's their main purpose. And as far as the mobile alert goes and sirens not being needed, I haven't gotten most of the alerts to my phone for some reason, only occasionally will I get those alerts, plus if you don't have service, you may not get it... so sirens are still pretty important in my book.
I miss home (Chicago) however, we have the sirens here in Columbus. They test them weekly at the same time.I would think those sirens are everywhere in the country. I remember many a time in my childhood running for the basement during a tornado because of the siren. I recall a more recent siren in 2014 for an incoming tornado.
I live near a siren in Chicago. So I live in the west lawn neighborhood and I live 3 blocks away from the Hubbard high school field. There is a siren at one of the sidewalks.
I’ve been researching about the Siren Head cryptid and the sound they produce is an air raid siren, which is absolutely TERRIFYING! This cryptid absolutely terrifies me just because of the noise this siren produces-and in general is scary, which isn’t surprising is because this vid came out two years ago and so was the creation of the Siren Head (2018).

Did you hear what happened at the bears home game, this past Sunday night?
I'm from MN and I used to live right up the street from a siren. The first Wednesday of the month were always interesting.
even people that have lived here for 30-40 years still ask every Tuesday..what's that sound?.. its unreal.
In Nebraska they happen on wed. and at 10:15 AM
I live in the suburbs and I always wondered why are tornado sirens sounded like air raid sirens
Wait... the ones you can see on the pole in the background look like regular megaphones. Does anyone think that they could be used to broadcast ANY sound, not just *ALERT* sounds?
dam it i seen Chicago's Air Raid Sirens i just came to listen i love the sound they make
rest in peace tucson arizona which had the most legendary siren the FS ThunderBolt T1000
Hello Columbus from Chicago, meet Cleveland from Chicago! Still miss it!
We in the midwest, really panic when we hear it outside the normal time, for that means tornado
How does Chicago have an alarm that sounds the first Tuesday of every month? I’ve lived here for 10+ years and NEVER heard it!
These are in my small town about 40 minutes away from Chicago. I didn't know they had the EXACT ones in Chicago. I thought that was cool.
I live near a siren in Chicago. So I live in the west lawn neighborhood and I live 3 blocks away from the Hubbard high school field. There is a siren at one of the sidewalks.
I remember this sound happening every Tuesday @ 1030 hours growing up in Chicago.
Cool but I would like to know the pattern in video form of the air raid Siren
