  • If a disaster was about to hit Chicago how would the city alert its residents? Well, 112 strategically located air raid sirens are hidden around the city to serve this very purpose. The sirens are tested on the first Tuesday of every month at 10am

      Throughout Illinois, I'm not sure if other states do the same, if there are average everyday thunderstorms on the first Tuesday of the month, certain areas will either do a quick 10-15 second run. Other towns, and villages will skip the test.
      If there's a warning on that day, over certain towns, cities, or villages, the sirens will stay on if there's any rotation noticed by spotters.

    Sirens are useful no matter if we have cell phones or not. It’s an easier way of letting thousand of people know all at the same exact time that something is going on. Unlike cell phones we have to actually receive the notification and have to actually read it.

    • @pattycarljackson
      @pattycarljackson 7 лет назад +8

      Chicago Aussie that’s true but we also don’t pay attention to our phone alerts either or if we ever receive them. I along with others don’t receive reliable alerts on our phones even if we enable this feature. Sirens whether your phone works or not you will hear it and if there is an actual tornado happening nobody is going to ignore it. So sirens will always continue to exist in some form or another at least I hope they do. Technology is unreliable these are way more consistent and reliable.

      Was a few weeks ago we had a tornado warning. I was in our local urban park mountain biking. We got the phone notifications first which was one thing, but when the local sirens fired up that's when things got real. Sirens > Cell phone notifications.

    • @UncircumedPickle
      @UncircumedPickle 3 года назад +1

      Half true cell phones are built to receive certain sounds when there’s an amber alert. It would be cool if cell phones just had a small message like
      ALERT
      FIND SHELTER
      THIS IS NOT A TEST
      ALERT
      THIS IS A TEST

    Even with Alerts that people can get on their phones, I still don't see the siren system ever really going away. The reason for this is because a siren warning can be delivered just as quickly and in a multitude of conditions where cellphone or mobile data may not be working such as a power outage caused by a major storm or a major system failure of the cell network.
    However, you mentioned in your video how in the 1940s, citizens would head for shelter once they hear the sirens and tune the radio for information. This is where I think the age of cell phones will really help. Today people can hear the sirens, get to shelter, and wait for push alerts on their device (of course, assuming the device is working).

    This was all very interesting to me, because I grew up in the near western suburb of Maywood, not far from the city of Chicago itself. Around the years 1961-63 the one that was close to us went off on a daily basis at 5 or 6 PM Monday thru Friday. I remember this because as kids we relied on it to let us know when it was time to go home for dinner. We got out of school at 3, got home at 3:15, greeted our mothers, then went out to play. Once we heard that siren we would all disperse and go home for dinner. It was like clock work. I never knew where that siren was exactly. It seem to come from a north-easterly direction. Regardless, the siren was a part of our growing up in Chicago, and its sound was no more ominous to us than the voices of our mothers calling us home.

    So, as a volunteer firefighter, we elected as a town to have our siren sound (in aus) whenever there was an "alert" (meaning a job we go to with lights and sirens). After a survey, it was revealed that for every fire call, the siren helped an average of 0.5 to 1 firefighter to respond per call as they didn't have their pager or phone on them at the time. Considering we only had 30 active fireys, all doing different things, thats more than enough justice. Trust me, sirens work!

      The modulators in Chicago's siren system run on the noticeably different and somewhat off-putting Alternate Wail tone during tornado warnings, often mistaken for being broken. Recordings of the siren have been uploaded to RUclips, with the videos reaching millions of views. Many people refer the Modulator as the "Chicago Siren" or the "Scary Tornado Siren" due to the unsettling nature of the tone.

    I live in MO where we have monthly tests of our tornado sirens every Wednesday. Near KCMO, we don't have enough. I rarely hear them (if ever), whereas my parents house is located rather close to one and the test can be heard every Wednesday at about 11 AM. I think more should be installed where necessary in addition to mobile alerts. It needs to be noisy everywhere so we know what the hell is going on.

    In Columbus, OH, it is every siren in the whole county, every Wednesday at Noon, every week of the entire year, every year. These are mainly tornado sirens as we usually get at least two or three tornado warnings each year and have actually had a few real tornados.

    Although I do not live in Chicago, (Illinois), in Louisville, (Kentucky) the tornado sirens are tested on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, for 3 minutes, weather permitting. The Siren System has the ability to tell on itself if any of the 120+ tornado sirens fail to activate, or fail in any other way.

    Where i live, we still have air raid sirens. Of course they renamed them to just alert stations/sirens and included weather warnings etc. We had good ole reliable thunderbolts that you could hear from one side of town to the other, now though, we have these wimpy high pitched, annoying things that once you shut your window, you dont hear them.
    Its a weird thing. We have the tech for warning our citizens of dangers. However, if the cell towers fail and we loose power, we are STILL reliant on our own two eyeballs. Heh usually people get the clue with a cell looses connection and or power goes out but..ya never know anymore.

    With people today relying so much on their cellphones, the first target of an enemy actor would be the cellular network. With that down, people outside the sirens' range won't receive an alert, and they will die.

    The reason they still have the civil defense sirens is because due to an event of a serious power outage where your cell phone towers would not necessarily have power all of the civil defense Sirens are on a backup power source so when they set them off they will go off.

    Here in the Midwest US, especially in Wisconsin, every municipality has sirens. We just call them tornado sirens as that's their main purpose. And as far as the mobile alert goes and sirens not being needed, I haven't gotten most of the alerts to my phone for some reason, only occasionally will I get those alerts, plus if you don't have service, you may not get it... so sirens are still pretty important in my book.

    You should do a video about Old Chicago, an Indoor amusement park in Bolingbrook which existed for just five years from 1975 to 1980. Despite this short time of operation it still has a great deal of nostalgia with people who had visited there. My parents tell me stories of fun times with family and friends there. It seems like an interesting topic that every Chicagoan knows of, but little about.

    My town had an air raid system for the same reason. The only realy time it was used, was to announce "no school". If a winter snowstorm was bad enough, they would run the air raid sirens. The storm would have to be particularly bad, but it was used. So yeah, as a little kid, we used to love hearing the air raid sirens in the winter, it meant no school and play in the snow.

    I know some states in the us question weather or not they want to permanently silence these sirens and only rely on mobile alerts and so Fourth but a lot of states have said it’s not going to happen but there is one state which is either Missouri or California that has silenced it warning sirens. Other than that the majority of all states with warning sirens have decided to keep them up and running
