- Daft Punk were known for their pumping, compressed sound. Legend says they used the Alesis 3630 hardware compressor for its grabby character. Here's how to get a similar effect using any VCA-style compressor plugin.

Just love the technique, simply harder, better, faster, stronger ! 👌
Glad you like it! 😅
@@Cableguysis this FL studio?
@@Stopinvadingmyhardwareno, this is ableton i think
Woah it sounds so much better with the compressor. Great tip!
Glad you liked it!
If you ever apply compression I should ALWAYS sound better if it doesn’t it’s not need 🙏
This sounds so good oh my god
Their compressed sound is also known as "Ducking".
This sound signature is my favorite from them, was ahead of its time on the 90's!
Its subtle but so effective. very groovy
I learned this glue compressor trick from Kursa. You can even slam it harder by turning the threshold all the way down and the makeup all the way up, it sounds insane.
I've got one of these compressors in analog form, super fun!
This channel is so fire dude
Cableguy is a modern treasure for articulating, technically for the budding doyens, and accessibly for those of us just pressing play and blissing out, ALL those magical tweaks for a sonically charmed world.
Wow, you can really feel the difference too. I might need to get this compressor! 😅
like a suction cup into each beat 👐🏽
I have this ole compressor in my bedroom. Yay 😂
Super interesting. Thanks
Sounds like sidechaining

My thoughts exactly
The most efective vca config for mastering. sslcomp is great to get warm too
a longer release squashes the signal longer & makeup gain brings it all back up. combined with a particular kick-trigger pattern, this provides a "ducking rhythm". the fast compressor attack tells the compressor to quickly duck. the ratio tells the compressor how strong the effect will be. sometimes the ducking effect takes place just between kick & bass, but you can definitely have the kick trigger the entire mix.
I had a 3630 and I used to get crazy punchy drums on it by driving the gain hard and then setting the threshold so the compressor grabs the kick while it rids of the distortion (because it's compressing) but the high end would still clip but not audibly distort and I got really gritty smashed punchy drums out of it. It's also really useful for consistent pumpy tracks, the only people who rate it bad is those who don't know how to use it or use it for the wrong reasons like classical music or metal or any other music that is all over the place. It's not ideal for that. Btw you can do the same with any vst compressor with a clip function, I used Cytomic glue compressor and the results were almost identical if you want to get the general idea.
i plan on getting one and put it in my chain before my outboard synths hits the soundcard. From mixer out, to the 3630 and in to my daw. Do you think the analog hardware feel give me that extra punch and sound over the vst?
@@AnalogFlava It will give unique compression characteristic which might include snap from attack/release combo but don't expect to be wowed but I like it so you might too, also it's dual mono so that gives an extra spatial dimension to a mix but that can also be achieved with vst.
I've A/B'd it with a glue compressor and apart from unique compression characteristics there's not much more to it to the point where I said to myself I might as well use the vst. There will be varying opinions on that but that's just me, also as I type that I also think it might give something that I can't notice, I feel like it does idk but it won't be anything drastic. Just get one and play with it, it costs literally nothing and you might like it or hear what I don't.
I've had a few hardware compressors and I've sold them all but the 3630 is something I can't part with because I have a soft spot for it plus the unit I have is mint. They can also be modded easily. If ever I want that pumpy sound I know it's there waiting for me in the box.
Thanks mate! Yeah, I am building a hardware studio and so far I have no "tools" only a few fx's apart from my mixer and synths so to "finalize" it I think I want to try. with a few compressors and such. I saw a modded one for sale locally, but not sure if it's better to just go for the real thing. I am a bit of a "purist" I guess as I am for a totally 90's sound. So no "cheating" for me haha, but don't know if the modded is better or what it adds? @@sqwop
@@AnalogFlavaI modded my old one myself (this is my second one) then I changed it back to original because I didn't like it, it basically had a more usable attack and release but lost its pumpy character. That's the trade off pretty much so decide what you want. If I were you I would get both since you're working out the box where as I am all software so I couldn't justify buying it and it sitting in closet after having used it once.
I'm just too used to preset recalls. If you buy it and you don't like either you can always sell it on for pretty much what you bought it for
oh, cableguys, love your shaperbox plugin
Well this is incredibly useful. Subbed
Sounds like sort of proto-side chaining to me and is super cool especially since Daft Punk helped popularise this kind of sound in Electronic music.
Alesis 3630 can be had used all day for around $40. Neat piece of kit.
Damn it's so subtle.
that is what they used. I have one myself, and it took ages to find a power supply back in the days, since its a AC output and not DC like normal gear :)
You can use a DC power supply with the same RMS (root-mean-square) voltage and amperage that is equal or greater than the stock AC power supply.
You lose a bit of efficiency since you have two bridge rectifiers.
Used that "trick" on a lot of Nintendo consoles. The old ones had AC PSUs and originals are hard to come by and are pretty expensive, since there are basically no new AC PSUs out there.
great technique
I would never have used a compressor this way cuz in my mind it's more important to have as quick an attack as possible to let the transient through with a fairly quick release time, so that's what I always do.
This actually sounds really good in this context though so I'll give this a try
It convinces your ears that it’s thumping or like your cover and uncovering your ears a bit.
For those saying it doesn’t sound any different, listen to the beginning of the snare in both examples and it’ll be easier to hear
Amazing
i bought a bunch of cheap hardware compressors when i first started moving to a more dawless set and one of them was the 3630. Honestly it kinda sounds like crap, but there's a certain character about it. I ended up selling most of my hardware compressors cause they were all cheap one, but i kept the 3630 just to put on some busses. I usually put it on my drum bus now.
Huh. Never thought of this. But should have. ✅
Can someone compare this technique to side chaining and lmk if there is a difference between the two
Clever!
brother you are genuinely SO GOOD at what you do. a true professor of the craft. i hope you actually have or end up teaching some serious talent!!
i tried closing my eyes when i realized it was a comparison video and it hear nothing lol
Did you have quality headphones on?
Compression takes time to be able to hear objectively since we are so used to it with music in the last 40 years .
Headphones or monitors make it easier to listen for
I did the same thing
I loved/hated this compressor
I used to use a 3630 on my metal guitar sound.
love the fact it doesn't change a thing
Right.
I wonder if they slammed the master bus or if they actually sidechained the kick off the TR909 they had to the compressor that sat on the master? It would be pumping more i reckong with the kick sidechained vs the whole master just compressing the kick which would be louder than the rest to create the 'ducking" effect.
Great video mate. Is this just on the master output?
"pump it" -bogdanoff
This is why I have a 3630 in my rack. :)
I'm a theatre tech, more lighting but I have to do audio lots, so I'm constantly learning and trying to improve. I can not tell the difference here, or any time I add massive compression. I can't tell what it does.
A compressor reduces the signal's dynamic range, meaning it reduces the difference in level between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. Lots of people use to so their song feels like it "pops". At the end of this video, you can notice it mostly on the bass part.
good ol 30-.1 SSL Comp
I don't hear a difference...😢
Same bro
No difference, and I'm in DT770PRO's
The difference is extremely obvious, and I'm just on my phone, you should do some ear training
ah yes, the Alesis 3630 was a 90's sidechain icon
This is the first comp I owned back when I built my first PA system in middle school. Used it on the kick/snare, worked great! I now own 2.
❤
Where is the compressor put on? Bass only?
Same question : is the bus master sidechain by the kick ? Or only thé bass by the kick ? Or anything else ?
@djschmoove869 @MATFX

Thank you, will try this
Me on my phone.
Oh yes.... there's the difference.....
😅
Honestly it's not subtle on my phone, listen to how everything swells up and grooves harder, then gets sucked back down with every kick
Many comments saying they can't hear the difference. Many others saying it's super obvious 😂
@@Cableguys maybe it's the talented ear some people have and some people don't
I've got a iFi ZEN stack and HD600 and I can't tell the difference either.
Anytime I think I can hear a difference, I close my eyes and notice I can't tell when it switches from being on or off.
Niiice
Use Gain stage plugins please
I personally just automate the volume.
I once walked into a home depot, and about 20 seconds from coming within view of the lighting department, I found a lightbulb that had been buzzing, and made it stop buzzing. A guy working the floor said no one knew where that was coming from for weeks. I cannot hear the difference this compressor allegedly makes. I always wondered what it does, and I still don't get it. Is there something wrong with me?
I have a 3630, it's ace
Whats the difference between this and sidechain?
Is this Ableton or Bitwig? Just curious because I like the color handling when selecting/highlighting the tracks
It's Ableton Live 👍
I here almost no difference
Doesn't that have to be side chained, though?
French House.
I can't hear the difference...
Daft punk popularized almost all staples of modern music. Auto tune (one more time), Side chained submix (one more time), distorted 808s (tron).
What is he compressing? I don’t know what he meant by “master bus” I don’t speak English sorry
The kick and the bass? Or everything
My ears aren't good enough to hear much of a difference. Just sounds a bit louder. But im old and my ears are not great
Daft punk are master side chainer's
couldnt hear it with my 300$ headphones xD
It sounds no different who are all these bot comments like it sounds no different
might just be my speakers but it legit sounds the same
Right
don't feel bad. I'm running genelecs (albeit without a sub) and it's barely noticeable. A pretty good cherry on top, but don't be discouraged as it is very very subtle
i can barely hear a difference
Crazy how big of a difference it makes
I dont hear any difference. if there is its negligable.
I own an Alesis 3630 and it works absolutely phenomenal in this aspect. I bought mine for a 100 bucks and it's a STEAL! Go get one :)I own an Alexis 3630 and it works absolutely phenomenal in this aspect. I bought mine for a 100 bucks and it's a STEAL! Go get one :)
ur not just a vst company
No difference on iphone 14 max pro
didn't notice any difference... sorry
I hear absolutly no diffrece
I think you got that mixed up. I usually go with fast attack and slow release (around 120ms) to get pump. Check out my channel for a pumpy song.
Why not just adjust it off the mixer, one step
Wait until you notice it’s on bypass
He totally forgot to tell you they used this as a sidechain compression effect. Thats the pumping sound not JUST the compressor
imo just get a 3630 i saw one working for $10
Daft pump
daft pump
😂
Sounded worse after he added the compressor.
I normally just sidechain my kick to a separate bus that I want the pumping to take place on, gives a bit more control
Sounds same
Literallt cant hear anything different but maybe im just deaf.
I can't tell the difference. Daft Punk is wasted on me
sounds the same
Oh dear. I literally can't hear the difference... I guess I'm not producer material... :-)
Wtf is grabby character
I literally hear no difference. Maybe my headphones.
Or just sidechain the fuck out of everything with the kick...
No. That won't sound like daft punk
It might not, but it's essentially the same technique being shown in this video, except with more control - compressing the master like that is just asking for all kinds of problems.@@1337murk
@@barnaby_bridges It won't achieve the same thing by sidechain ducking tho
@@1337murkHe's using the kick to trigger the compressor with a slow attack, creating a pumping effect. It's pretty much the same thing. I would be hesitant to slam your master channel like that in a DAW, but I guess whatever works for you....
@@barnaby_bridgeshe’s using the compressor for texture not jus for gain reduction lol
don't hear no difference
There's no difference
thats side chaining i do that all the time
lel sound the same
The comp did absolutely nothing.
I barely hear any difference really
Train ur ears!
Try to use decent headphones to hear the most from to change. On phone speakers listen for the overall energy of the track. With the compressor on you get a lot more energy. It’s more in your face and punchy compared to the same track without it. It’s not a crazy big difference but is definitely adding some more energy and “tonal flavoring” to the overall mix.
@@shelbypease8076idk afaik I have pretty decent headphones (logitech g435). they definitely weren't cheap and it sounds nice (at least to my "untrained"* ears)
*yes I do agree my ears aren't exactly made for this stuff but I still don't hear that much noticable difference between the two
It takes time mate
@@shelbypease8076i am sorry, but if it's not noticeable for the average person on an average device, it is not noticeable for an absolute majority of people. It doesn't mean you shouldn't do tricks like this, it means it's not necessary, and oftentimes producers forget they do music for people, not for each other 😂.
I must be the only person on earth who doesn't enjoy daft punks music
I've never been a fan. Don't hate them, but at least what few songs I've heard, they're nothing special imo.
