The way I actually clapped & laughed out loud when the winner was revealed though 😂😂 please do more epic garden bro reality competition videos. We need more content like this in the gardening world. So well done & hilarious.
This is cracking me up! Jacques coming on to the channel upped the cuteness levels and let Kevin be his full self! This Real Housewives style is sending me! Can’t be satiated, please continue 💕
I absolutely love your videos. You combine high quality gardening info with playful banter. It’s what keeps me coming back. Thanks for all you do to help us beginner gardeners.
Guys- this is the bomb diggity…this is what we need our big brothers doing with a little more money than us, your little bros. Can’t thank you enough, the video was great, the contest was relevant and the results are true…thank you so much - keep doing these types of tests for us little bros it helps us immensely 👍
I LOVE VIDEOS LIKE THIS! What will grow better and why. Like the tomatoe challenge with the different compost items, these are my favorite types of videos. I really hope we see more videos like these.
Thanks for taking the time to do these comparison videos that show the end results! I use a gorilla cart and fill it with my mix of coconut coir, homemade compost, pumice, earthworm castings from my worm bin, azomite, kelp, and biochar. Then I dump the cart in the raised beds in between each planting and mix it in the existing soil. It gives great results and nutrient dense foods. You could add a worm bin to your garden area!
Loved this - I am a sucker for experiments in the garden. I think that Jacques made a good point in that some mixes may do better than others depending on the plants you are growing. Do think that the blood meal was a bit much, but maybe it would have been great for lettuce or spinach. Have also been playing with ratios in my own mixes, so this was very helpful.
My mom and I have always used miracle-gro for any of our plant needs, so I'm solidly team miracle-gro and super happy with how it keeps performing so well
OK this was a cool watch. Next I'd love for you guys to try 2 things - first, same experiment with a fruiting plant like peppers or tomatoes. Next, what amendments from Jacques' mix added to a good organic store mix (Fox Farms, etc) would do compared to the same store mix alone? In other words, try to figure out what really boosted his mix - realizing it might not be one amendment but a couple.
@@epicgardening Ohh another one for you. Custom, tailored amendments added to a good store mix vs the same mix with just a good organic fertilizer. Is going custom worth the effort and expense vs simply giving a plant a good balanced NPK boost? (of course you'd need microbial activity to process the organic fertilizer). Maybe even add a 3rd sample, the store mix with something like a liquid fertilizer vs pellets since containers might not have enough microbial activity to process solid fertilizer....
@@RickGregory This I would love. Some years adding water with fertilizer would be a problem here because of how wet it is, but my go to outside of just adding a layer of manure/compost (bagged from store) is a kelp or ocean something liquid. Others are dryer. Some places I would have to hand water, others I can just hose down. How does the type of soil affect it? I have one place that is super sandy. The others are nice and rich and full of worms..... if you are containerized anyway, how does the type of soil effect the fertilizer... as much as I'd like to just grow potatoes in my sandy spot, I don't have access to water there, and it is the only place that gets full sun. For that matter, a video on what plants like what soil might be nice too.
My mix varies every time, but I always make sure to add biochar, compost, castings, a bit of native dirt, and a thin layer of aged woodchpis at the bottom to absorb nutrients and water that would typically run off. But I'm on a budget so I specifically like those things since I can make them all for free.
I would love for you to do an experiment with Ollas vs. other watering methods! Thanks for all your videos! I just got my four 3 minute raised beds and can't wait to plant them!
Loved it, definitely good call on the sand! And thanks for the original soil test. I’ve had a few people at Armstrongs in El Cajon and Walter Anderson tell me to throw sand in the birdies raised beds to help slow long term settling and to help prevent over watering. Turned all the beds over before fall planting to hand pick all of the grubs out. Then went back in with two 50lb bags in the 15” med beds and everything exploded after replanting.
I predicted what would happen with Kevin's as soon as I saw the large amount of blood meal that went into the mix, not enough of the flowering growth, too much vegetative growth. I had no idea how the rest would play out, other than Miracle Gro would do well. For gardening I push anything I put into pots, seed trays, even raised beds through a screen to filter out chunks. When you push stuff through it's going to allow a little more wood bits, but that's OK. Mine is about the same size at Kevin's, I set it over a large wheelbarrow which makes life easy. While using some downward force, rub hands over the mix. It's the fastest way to get the stuff through the screen and into the wheelbarrow. It will also break up chunks and allow that to go through the screen, and once again that's OK. I'm not looking to get a lot of stuff out of the mix, I'm looking for the mix to be free of big chunks. For sifting typical growing medium, use 1/4" hardware cloth to staple to a wood frame. For sifting seedling medium, and I sift bagged stuff since it all comes with bits I don't want, use 1/8" hardware cloth, and you can simply lay that hardware cloth inside the 1/4" sifter, no need for a 2nd frame.
I love this because I’m not at a point where I can make my own soil from compost BUT I do have access to miracle grow. It’s nice to know what I can use in the garden for some success!! Thank for all of the hard work the Epic team puts into making these videos!🖤
I love this! I’ve been mixing my own soils and every batch does differently because of what I have available when I mix it up. And different plants need different conditions so YAY!
This was so much fun. I'm all for more competitions with plants that have different requirements or even different plants with the same formulations to see if what placed first will continue to do so...
Great videos boys it’s always a good time when yall are together. Keep doing the friendly competitions it’s educational and entertaining especially with the back n forth banter.
I love it when you guys do experiments. Your banter is really fun. I’m so glad you chose dirt, and I hope you guys do more experiments with dirt. The ultimate test would be a nutrition analysis of the plant at the end. We grow for a variety of reasons but what can we really add as a home gardener that makes the food in our garden the most nutritious?
Congrats Jacques. But I could not keep track of all the stuff you guys were putting in your mixes. sand green or brown, cation stuff. . . What a fun video. Always love your bropetition.
One thing missing from your experiment is a taste test. See David the Good's video on this - he ran 12 soil experiments testing turnips and found dramatic flavor differences between them in addition to the growth differences. Thanks for this video - it was really fun video to watch!
This was funny and informative to watch. I've been watching epic gardening since 2020 and took a mental break from RUclips. To come back and watch these two pretending to be cut throat was absolutely humorous! I love these guys, and I'm glad to be watching them again. 🥰
Congrats! I use Michigan peat potting mix with 1/4 compost, 1/4 vermiculite and worm castings, with a cup of time release fertilizer and a cup of blood meal. I put a couple calcium plugs in, mulch heavily with pine pet bedding and feed them with fish emulsion once a month when small, when I see flowers I mix fish emulsion with flower food to get more flowers then go back to fish emulsion every 2 weeks. I grew really tall big boys in 7 gallon grow bags and got lovely huge tomatoes. I would love to see your results with mine.
I knew right away Jacques would win- despite conventional wisdom, plants actually get very little of their nutrition from dirt- in reality a plants roots are naturally adapted to grow in minerals (ie. sand, pumice) Way to go Jacques!!!
The terms ‘rich soil’ have changed definition over the last 20 years- if you look at horticulture literature from the 60’s and 70’s - Clay soil was referred to as ‘rich’ soil. This experiment should be expanded to include perennial herbs- and see the performance of each mix over time- Jacques would definitely outperform the others. The only issue is the Coco Coir in this mix- Coco is too fresh to be used as a permanent planting mix (for perennial container use) it will decompose after a year or so and negatively affect performance- peat moss on the other hand is very old and does not decompose. Maybe and mix of 1/3 sand, 1/3 pumice and 1/3 coco might work (with the bio char) Just some thoughts!
Not all plant roots are created equally. Trees, as an example, are best suited for a mineral based soil. Mediterranean herbs also have a somewhat uniquely different requirement than our traditional veggies. This is a topic worth far more discussion IMO.
Such a good video… love the chemistry, the interviews, the competitiveness and love the experiment … so enjoyable I laughed out in several occasions and was rooting for Jacque the whole time …. 👌🏻
I really enjoyed this video. I like making my own potting mix. I make my own and have had lots of great results as I grow most of our ola r in pots. The one thing I would like to se you do is to do the same experiment but have a small bowl under your grow bags so that the leached waiter an nutrients can be reabsorbed back into the grow bags.
I had to go back to see Jacques formulation, would have been nice to have a recap of whay worked well! Nonetheless, great video, enjoyable, dont change any thing just more videos! Id like another one of these. Make the perfect mixes! Its be nice to see one thats accessible to all as well, for example its hard to get all those ammendments for cheap here.
Oh guys I love how you did this one! I love how I didn’t have to wait for another video to see the final results. I would love to see how a big box store does have a full season of growth though. Is it good after you use it only once, or does it hold up after a full season of growth.
So happy to see Kevin and Jaques doing amazing experiments. Jealous of the sunshine haven't seen it in months. Love going back to old format vs all the others. Sorry to say when I watch you guys not all the others.
I would suggest going with your same soul mixes but sub out Down to Earth Blood Meal for Down to Earth Feather Meal then add DTE Bat Guano with N, Azomite, Diatomaceous Earth for silica and lastly crab shell meal. Add just lime to it. You can buffer between bio-char and coco coir. You get 3 kinds of calcium from bat guano, crab shell and lime. P from guano and east N. Trace minerals from Azomite and Kelp. The crab shell stimulates chitinous bacterial geowth and stimulates the plant to increase its insect defenses. The fine easily absorbable silica & Mg is from the D.E. Feather meal is keratin protien and can triple the size of your leaves. Your compost & worm casts will be your bacteria source which is needed to break down these organic soil amendments to make them plant available. I would water with a mixture of plant mollases and water which will activate the bacteria quickly and they will spread to the other amendments to accelerate their breakd
I add wood ashes from our wood stove, not too much, but a sprinkle on the mix I make in the late winter. Worm compost, sand and horse manure added to the cheapest soil at our local store. I live in Burgundy, France and it's all rock here, but everything grows. Hopefully, we won't have so much rain this spring and more fruits instead of leaves...but it did make for some dynamite lettuce..
Y’all really made a video about dirt this entertaining 😂. I thought I was gonna play this in the background, but you got full attention instead. Please do more of these!
I'm interested to see how the sand works out, I used that, homemade charcoal, and coconut choir as a potting mix for some beans. I also planted spider plants in the same planter and the beans did not do well at all. I came to find out spider plants kill other plants so that happened, but I also wasn't sure if the soil mix didn't play a part too.
After watching this and the last one on soils I’m almost convinced to try the Miracle Grow. I used a recommended soil mix in my Green Stalk last summer and nothing grew. Part my fault because of the heat from the asphalt and the building but the soil had tons of large wood chunks in it. So disappointing as it was not cheap. I love these “contests” between you guys.
I use miracle grow in containers and in raised beds along with some Espoma cow manure for ectra nutrient. I did learn not to add too much nitrogen from this video, thank you!

This format with the side interviews is awesome hahaha
I came to say this too, so funny 🤣🤣🤣
I"m cracking up watching this!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I was sitting there like, "Are they doing confessionals right now?" 😂😭 it's giving the office
We need more of this
Reality TV style lol

Hope you enjoy it!
I absolutely love watching y’all! Such energy ! Very informative and entertaining! So glad I came across y’all channels!
Great editing. Love the talking head moments. Keep up the great work guys!
Ok this series is the best ever. So informative and so funny!
the editing is so good. id watch at least 6 seasons and a movie
😍 You guys are amazing. In every way. We learn a lot and we can laugh while doing so.
Loved this video so much. The commentary from both competitors felt like the lead up to a boxing match!
I was ready to try Jacques' formula until they lifted it and said it weighed The most- can't lift that.
shoutout to the editors, this was so funny 😅

Lol. Thought for sure Kevin won this one. But great job Jacques. Such fun watching you two. 😊
So grateful for your hard work and educational videos that are sooo entertaining!
Y’all really made a video about dirt this entertaining 😂. I thought I was gonna play this in the background, but you got full attention instead. Please do more of these!
Now this is the competition/reality show I needed 🙌
Great competition and job! Thank you for this experiment.

Loved this format! I want to see a test I’m currently doing: planting successions way early to late to find advantages/disadvantages.
I find these videos so helpful and fun!
This video was everything! Thank you for creating such funny & positive gardening content👩🌾🌿
I use miracle grow in containers and in raised beds along with some Espoma cow manure for ectra nutrient. I did learn not to add too much nitrogen from this video, thank you!
Oh man, I love these experiments so much 😂 thanks guys ❤
I'm here for the 75% fertility promise, Bless my yarden potato daddy and garden hermit! Good stuff, good video. I saw the MIgardener video for creating seed starting mix the other week. I love to see lots of the same similar thing from different creators. In a sense of just showing how simple it is to do and different methods to get to a similar end result and save us money along the way.
I'm for sure going to have to get some materials ordered and play with it.
This was a great and funny challenge. Thank you for the education…and entertainment. Me from Washington.
Congrats Jacque!! Great job guys. Loved the video and the new style format!
LOVE these experiments! They're fun but REALLY helpful too. Great work guys!
Love the video! Very the Office-esqe. Miracle-gro has been my go to for years!
I loved this video ❤😂 I really like these challenges and tests!
The experiments are great. I would like to see you review essential gardening tools and products side by side - like America’s Test Kitchen does for kitchen items.
Awesome video! Love it when you do these tests
Love the experiment videos....lots to learn. Thank for the videos. :-)
I love this!! More of this type of content. It’s so fun and educational.
Editing is top notch!
This was great! So damn funny too! Loved the in between interview style… hilarious!
This is the best video I’ve seen all year
I chuckled the whole way through this video! What fun!
Love this test. You guys are so fun.
I really like the challenge videos a lot.
