This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. So the girl-orphan came to the river to tell the mother that she was being given away for the unloved, to a strange family, ask for blessings and cry.

This is an old Russian folk song about an orphan bride who has no parents to give blessings to her marriage, so she goes to the river, which represents the border between the living and the dead to ask for a blessing from her mother. The part about the horses in the yard just means that there are a lot of people gathered at the celebration, but nobody who can "give her away" in the traditional sense. That creepy whisper was the voice of her deceased mother, and the yodeling part was her weeping. The girl did not receive the blessing of her mother and In the end, spirits of the river were taking her away in that boat to join the world of the dead. Implying that she have drowned.

She was one surving kid of 8 from an alcoholic mother. At age 3 she was found thrown out with broken shoulder in snowy street. She was picked up by strangers and given to asylum. The massage therapist there adopted her. Diana struggled with speech till age 5 and her adopted mother took her to singing lessons to develop speech. She is really God's child. God bless this beautiful being on her path, wherever it takes her.

Her uncle (her adopted mother’s brother) noticed her low voice when she started speaking and suggested singing lessons to his sister.
The chain of events which brought Diana to where she is now is nothing short of a miracle. God has blessed her and us.

Welcome Darren. Diana is truly a special talent. I’m sure you have ticked off all the popular songs by now but some lesser known ones are also really beautiful. Try ‘La Vague’ ‘Crane’ and ‘finicky horses’. Her original songs ‘as your voice’ and ‘into the sky’s’. She sang Non je ne regrette at 12yo in a bar, that’s well worth checking out too. My personal favourite and one that you probably won’t come across unless you searched directly for it is a cover of ‘Truce’. It’s just a tender, soft little song sang buy a young princess that has now grown into being a young Queen. Queen Diana:)

I treat myself to a Diana evening twice a week. I'm almost 70 years old and have always been a tough guy, but Diana has a voice like from another planet. Plus the charisma. I have to cry every time, the tears just come. She probably captivates every person with empathy, no matter what song she sings. In addition, she is beautiful.

The song is much more than the sum of the words, it generally takes someone to explain it, or someone who understands Russian folk tales to fully understand it. In fact, it is a young bride-to-be who comes to the mystical river that divides the living and the dead so that she can communicate with her deceased parents to get their blessing.
The whimps and wails, or incantations, at the beginning are for accessing the underworld. The ghostly voice is her mother answering. Once she has the blessing, she marches to the end of the pier to shout for joy to her friends on the other side that all is well, she has the blessing, hence the change in mood to happiness.
She is then placed back into the boat by the spirits and repeats her various spells for the return journey as the spirit pushes her back to the land of the living. At least that's my interpretation of what's going on.
Personal note: As for Diana? Well what can you say, except that this really was a world class bravado performance, and by the way I'm almost convinced that she won the match then and there in the semifinal, it was that exceptional. Although, of course, everything she sang before and after certainly helped in the final decision.

Diana Ankudinova was only 14 when this was recorded and already you can tell she is well on her way into developing into a full contralto. She has outstanding tone quality, timbre, and such a full and deep chest sound for such a young performer. Also here stage performance is outstanding. She has no fear at all. You are correct, Diana Ankudinova is a total stage animal!

Diana is a phenomenon on the Russian stage. She has an extremely extraordinary voice, a peculiar manner of performance and stage charm. And this in 15 -16 years. In this case, Diana took the tragic meaning of an old woman's song and sang it as a forest or river nymph. She doesn't do covers in the usual sense. Once you listen to it again, you will understand how unusual it is. Any song she remakes, and it turns out great.

Diana is a master of transporting emotions and telling a story with the way she sings. You really feel that she sings with all of her heart and that makes it so easy to connect to her songs and to dive into the atmosphere even if you don't understand the language.

@@andreymussr7988 я как раз и написал в каком контексте подобный вариант подходит, а в каком нет. Вы бы ещё dear написали dear river ведь тоже на русском имеет смысл, или honey, тоже что и sweet. Только вот носители английского не создают уменьшительно-ласкательных форм, так как не испытывают в этом необходимости, поэтому при переводе нужно подбирать форму крайне осторожно или вообще этого не делать, как в этом варианте.

Even super vocal coaches don't see all she puts into a song, by no way inferior to Dimash. Just how difficult to build up a song like that. All the sound, texture, gesture is related to all the rest. Diana was born May 31, 2003 Far East, Russia. Start sing at 4,5 y.o. (to speak well). She is a true contralto. She is genius about vocal skills (she can sing pop, rock, folk, opera, rhythm & blues, soul, indie, mamba).
It was 12 May 2018. She was 14 years old in this performance. In this performance she is drowned bride. And the lyrics are full of mysticism.

Thank you so much for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova. Diana actually turned 16 on 31st May 2019, but was indeed 14 at the time of this performance. The show she is on here is Ты супер! (translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy, the bald guy on the judges panel, and who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. You may have seen him play piano for Dimash sometimes. Diana's cover of "Wicked Game" on the same show - by which time she had turned 15 - in 2018 is also very much worth watching. There's so much power in this girl. In 3 year was abandoned biological mother on the street winter. An employee of the orphanage adopted the girl. After moving with her adoptive mother to another city, the girl continued to fear her biological mother, who beat and drowned her. Psychologists advise to turn to singing. The girl spoke badly. Bowing low to her adoptive mother Diana, she was able to help her cope with all the difficulties of life. Now they live in Moscow and Diana continues to study. She turned 16 in may 2019.

@@linororen Diana became an orphan when she was 4 years old. She was 14 when she joined the show you just reacted to, which btw is a show for orphan children to show the world that they are more then just kids without parents. Some sites say that abuse in the orphanage was a big issue - but since i don't know for sure - don't take my word for it. Nontheless something happened that made here develop speech problems which she had trouble with for a long time. But look at her now, what a strong and talented girl, bless her.
@@AdmiringBlue I read in the comments of one of her videos that it was her mother who abused her, and that Diana was taken away from her at age 3 or 4 and put in a Catholic school not an orphanage. One of the nuns was said to become like a mother to her and taught her to sing and speak. These are the approximate words of another commenter not mine.
It was Diana mother who abused her. She was left outside in the winter cold with a broken arm when she was 3 years old. Her adoptive mother you can see in this video:a woman in white blouse.

You should read up on her life story, her adopted mother first thought she was deaf mute so she got her a speech and voice teacher, and her mother and teachers found out she loved to sing.
6:58 Diana just total mesmerized all the judges. They were not able to move from their seats until Diana let them go. This was 3d time when these judjes saw her (1st - Derniere Danse, french, 2nd - It's a man's world, english).

Judges didn't wait for special, they were in shock so all 4 judges forgot to press the buttons, and in that moment they thought the song is over, and remembered that they didn't do it and have to press buttons! 😄

Diana is a lyric contralto meaning she has the deepest register among the contraltos. Not usually found in Operas because lyric contraltos are extremely rare.

And Diana found her new and lovely family at age of 5, family that fought for her life, for her happiness, and her future, that's why when she sings that song, she is so truly in to it.

Most respectfully taking my eyes off for a little while from my previous experience of listening to music and singers from all over the world and just saying I am convinced that the young Russian singer Diana Ankudivona is not just a singer on the stage performing but a mesmerizing spirit from intergalactic musical theater landing and personifying as Diana Ankudinova and begins singing through human species.
Years of Diana and i always return to this -- amazing bit of artistry - and yes laughter is a valid expression for surprise and wonder

Her style so sounds primal it really suits her voice.
As a vocal coach you find it hard to describe her technique but find it funny at the same time, Diana is special, especially at a young age.
I just have to say that I’ve seen several people react to this song and it’s amazing singer . But seeing you and your truly honest and real feelings to what you were listening to was so pleasant to see . So thoughtful and genuine . Thank you
One of my favorite vocal coaches getting "kretzed" (?) by Diana, for the first time--couldn't click on the thumbnail fast enough; perfect first exposure performance choice! Your facial expressions and startled reactions, plus your attempt to analyze this "strange, in the best sense" young performer, were so enjoyable! I was giggling from the first moment your face registered your first surprise, then your brain tried to shift back into analytical mode. And, you were able to nail, and briefly demonstrate the timbre effect you were hearing, which has stumped a number of other vocal coaches, who've reviewed this (which shouldn't be a surprise--you're usually spot on). Obviously, she's a teenage contralto, who has adopted the artificial (but healthily done, it appears) "tongue clench" technique (tongue swallowed, pulled way back and down, soft palate lowered for nasal outflow) as her timbre effect (similar to Shakira, Tony Braxton and Cher--also utilized by the voice actors who have voiced the puppet, Kermit the Frog). Being an audio engineer, I could hear some of the "airiness" was added by the show's audio engineer, routing her vocals through a "vocal exciter" (never used in recording opera, of course) which adds a hint of rasp/breathiness, for a thicker texture.--many of her attacks are actually healthily glottal, with gentler onset "h"s, as well. But, isn't this ingenious? Imagine, a teenager adopting an effect that she knew would probably be foreign to Russian audiences and drive them nuts, either into confusion, or just plain shock and awe (as evidenced by the faces of the judges--such a hoot)! Not to mention her control of the yodels (a staple of old Russian folk music, I'm told, which this song is, but rearranged). Anyway, thanks for a thoroughly entertaining (and informative) 10 minutes, dear Linor. Try her performance of "Human", next, if you're sufficiently intrigued. Regards from a USA fan.
Yes, the judges were shocked, but pleasant and they are confused and delighted with her voice, there is no fear at all. They, like Linor, did not expect to hear such a miracle. And we have a rich musical vocal culture in Russia, so similar sound effects are also not foreign to us ;)))

(such as Polina Gagarina--fabulous!). To see Diana overcome the adversity of such a brutal infancy, enjoy recognition, and become a "national treasure" in Russia (and in other parts of the world), is truly heartwarming. This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. So the girl-orphan came to the river to tell the mother that she was being given away for the unloved, to a strange family, ask for blessings and cry.

In my humble opinion reacting to Human after Rechenka may frighten Linor a bit, as the "deep" effects of Diana's voice are extreme here. I would offer Wicked Game first. :)
I love hearing a strange new voice. It makes me want to keep listening. This is a good example of that.

Diana does have an incredible voice and as you mentioned, not something you'd expect just by looking at her.
I believe at the time, she was 16 when singing this which again shows her voice to be something quite unique.
This piece feels quite haunting and i love it.
The range of her singing blows me away every time.
I've also heard her sing other songs too and she will sing them not only wonderfully but in her own unique way which seems to work very well.
I really hope someone worthwhile takes her to great things because she could be something we will not see again for a very long time.
I also hope that the industry doesn't mess her up as they can do with young singers or take advantage of her as some do others.
She really needs someone to check contracts etc so they don't rip her off.
She's special and i wish her so much for the future.
