Same. Michael was making a terrible argument. You can't say, "If he hit his head...," because if that's the measuring stick for a legal tackle, then no tackle can be made in the NFL, because a player can hit their head in any tackle. Any time you go to the ground, you could possibly hit your head. It was just a ridiculous argument, and I am ashamed that he even bothered to try to make that argument.

TUA SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN PLAYED!!!!
If you cannot tackle someone like that make it across the board then. And in another 4 years, there will be no such thing as a legal tackle.
It literally states in the rule book that unnecessary or excessive force is a 15 yard penalty… which literally happens on every nfl play. I’m disgusted by the rigged league. I hate to take it there but there is no dodging it anymore. This is what the nfl has set themselves up to become. Not only was this one of the worse roughing the passing calls this season, the last 10 years, maybe ever, but the refs explanation afterwards was embarrassing. To say that Grady Jarrett " unnecessarily " threw Tom Brady to the ground ( which is the definition of a tackle btw) is such a lame, pathetic cop-out for such a horrible call. The falcons got robbed and I'm not even a Atlanta fan 😒

*Bucs repeatedly made the same sack by whipping the QB to the ground and no flag was thrown*
At 11:23 of the 1st quarter, Bucs sack Falcon QB in the very same way and no flag is thrown.
And at 11:57 of the 3rd quarter, yet another identical sack is made by the Bucs with no flag.
In both cases, Buc defender whips Marcus Mariota to the ground.
At 4:10 of the 3rd quarter, A Buc lands on Mariota with his weight on the QB and draws no penalty flag.
At 11:08 of the 4th quarter, a Buc whips Mariota to the ground and another then Buc lands on Mariota with his weight on the QB. No penalty flag.

At some point, it's just a work hazard. You can't prevent 100% of concussions in a violent sport. Flinging a player to the ground is just something that can happen in the course of the game. What happened to Tua was unfortunate, but it's a risk you take playing the sport. The only question I have surrounding the Tua incident is should he have been out there in the 1st place given the hit he took in the previous game.

@James Stocks Umm no. Millennials just care about players leaving comfortably passed 50. Look up how Frank Wycheck is doing. It’s really sad. Attributing that call to millennials is ridiculous. That was clearly an overreaction to Tua which makes no sense. Ppl weren’t complaining about the hit on Tua, we were complaining about putting him back in the game when he clearly showed signs of a concussion. These are two separate issues the are being conflated when they shouldn’t be. The only reason that was called was bc it was Tom Brady. Lamar had the same thing happen to him and there was no call. It’s to the point where roughing the passer needs to be reviewable by replay or you’re going to have to make it a penalty when QB’s are wrapped up and refuse to go down trying to save the play.

Irvin, love yah, but people did not kill the guy who sacked Tua over that concussion. You're claiming the player and maybe the NFL would get killed over not throwing a flag - the NFL wasn't killed over Tua's concussion play NOT being a flag. The NFL got killed by media and fans alike, because the kind of concusion he got typically occurs when you get hit in the head while already having a concussion. They weren't killing them over that play, that play lead people to kill the NFL over the week prior, when the MEDICAL TEAM from both the Dolphins and the NFL's independent doctors both clear Tua to not only get ack on the field last week, but to not even consider a concussion after the game and allow tua to play on short rest without going through the protocol.
the NFL was not killed over the hit and no flag. They were killed over Tua being cleared to play in the first place.
Ain't nobody killing the NFL over how defenders are tackling QB's, and all the rule changes the NFL made to protect QB's was never about how the media and fans reacted. A lot of fans actually disliked the rule changes because it makes it so hard for defenders to actually sack a QB.
It was a fault in the medical side that pissed people off. Not the hit, sack, and no flag. Nobody was actually mad about the lack of a flag. You have to be able tackle the QB, or what are we doing?

  • @jaxsongray2475

My thing is if Irvin is talking about ruthless contact, two things 1. They sign up for this type of contact in middle school football. Literally hitting each other so don’t act as if this is all new to the sport. 2. We have to define reckless contact that involves endangerment to the player cause then otherwise everyone is right and their version of rough contact gets called (which btw has already been defined for us in the way that they can’t target headshots, or any wrestling-esk moves that will cause severe injury) Dude he could’ve tripped Tom Brady and Brady walks out with an ankle injury you can’t just not touch them cause injuries are a concern, you play with that risk. Done

If a defender is not allowed to "fall on" the QB without drawing a penalty, it stands to reason that the defender must grab the QB by the torso and "apply torque" to ensure the QB lands on top of self (the defensive player). I call it the "alligator roll". And, with it, of course the QB's body, and head, are going to get whipped around. There is no alternative.

Steeler fan for over 50 years, so I have no dog in this hunt. I watched the play from multiple sources and came two conclusions: Make Tom Brady play in a dress once and for all, so calls like this make sense AND the NFL may have a Donaghy situation. CTE is a serious thing, which is why it been hard for me to watch and support the NFL over the last 10 years or so. The Tua situation is heartbreaking and should not have happened. This play call, though, is literally the most blatent officiating blunder I've seen _ever._ Jarrett had to circle around the engaged lineman in order to get Brady, so his momentum is clearly carrying him in that direction. He did--literally--everything you're supposed to do, and he _still_ get flagged? Stop playing the game. If you are _that_ concerned about the safety of the quarterback on a waist tackle where the quarterback hit the ground "too fast" and didn't hit his head, stop playing the game. You might as well make it a weekly skills competition: no defenders, no contact, just run offensive plays against tacking dummies.
