He did this shortly after Ferris Bueller and won a Tony award for this role. The late 80’s were very good for Broderick.

This is great to see! While Finch is the lead in this show, the part requires a great character actor/singer to pull it off. This clip shows that Matthew Broderick was an excellent choice to inherit this role from Robert Morse. He’s excellent. That’s what made having Darren Criss and Nick Jonas take over the part from Daniel Radcliffe such a curious choice. Both are very appealing performers but they’re essentially leading men, not character actors. I wonder how much character either brought to the role beyond likability.

Broderick does a good job here, but you gotta see the original by Robert Morse. You'l see the lyrics being brought to life. Sadly he passed away last year 2022.

Yes, he was great in this role. Deliciously funny. How funny the lead is, is a huge part of the success of this show. Daniel Radcliff is not a funny guy. And Matthew Broderick is just a bit too handsome to be a failure. Robert Morse totally owned this show. He was like Carol Channing in Dolly - nobody has ever come close to her in that show. They both had a built in spotlight. RIP Robert.

I am struck by how small Matthew Broderick's voice is. I am surprised he could be heard in a theater, but I imagine that singers in Broadway musicals wear body microphones these days, as opposed to the days when performers really had to know how to sing and be heard to the back of the hall.

It's also a cinematic performance. Robert Morse was hilarious in this number on the stage, because he looked like the last person who would get anywhere. Matthew Broderick's a bit too handsome to fail. Robert Morse had you laughing just by grinning. He had you in the palm of his hand before he spoke! He owned this role - totally.

Mostly, it was just tradition, very few voice actors got to sing their parts in animated musicals, back then. But yeah, it was both confusing then fascinating, memorizing all the voices for my fave films & characters, as well as series. ^-^

Not funny enough. He's cute, and he can sing it, but he hasn't quite got Robert Morse's loopy, naughty quality that made his performance so great. Forget the film. it just didn't capture how great Morse was on the stage. And the less said about Daniel Radcliff and that production, the better. Robert Morse wasn't unlike Carol Channing in a way - the magic, delicious quality that they both had on the stage, evaporated in front of a camera. The problem here is that you know Matthew Broderick could easily succeed, he's handsome and together, Robert Morse's genius was that he was the very last person who who thought could succeed, which made you want him too - badly!! And made the original show so much funnier that the more recent productions. And that haircut!! He will be missed.

    • @jessierong

So well said! I watched this video first as I've been a fan of Matthew Broderick, loved it and then watched Robert Morse and loved his performance more. Much as I like Broderick I must say he's simply too good-looking for this role and doesn't seem funny. Robert Morse (R.I.P) on the other hand is so great as Finch. Also all the more recent versions like Radcliffe or Jonas just pale in comparison. They are like playing totally different characters to Morse's Finch. By the way does anyone see a bit of Jim Carrey in Morse's Finch mannerisms? I think Carrey must have studied Morse's performance as Finch....
