For those of you who asked for an update on the rain chain and dry creek bed I installed this past spring, here ya go! I love to pop onto the front porch now to watch the rain run through it. It's incredibly soothing and beautiful. I only wish my porch was large enough for a chair so I could sit and enjoy such a peaceful sight.
I look forward to the snow and ice and how those will transform it into an entirely different look. It'll be especially beautiful when the melting ice trickles through the center.
The rain chain is 100% copper and from Good Directions. Here's the link...

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

Buy the copper bowl. Get a blowtorch and heat-up a small section of the rim. (The bowl may be soft enough to not have to do this.). Gently bend a spout in the rim a couple inches wide that is lower than the rest of the rim. Use pliers or such wrapped in a rag to avoid marring your bowl. This spout will then direct the overflow water out. To keep the bowl's spout from turning towards your post or porch, attach another piece of chain (eg. copper lamp 'pull' chain) to tether it the direction desired. Voi-La!

Great idea! I would buy the bowl if the space was large enough to accommodate the diameter. Unfortunately it isn’t so I went this route.

Hi, Have you had any flooding issues in the grassy areas in the front yard when it rains heavily?

I’ve not experienced that but I have had some trouble with leaving the chain up through winter. Ice forms on it and the weight pulls on the links and the gutter attachment so we took it down in the middle of winter last year and rehung it this past spring.

Hi, does there have to be a gutter in order to use these?

A gutter is what directs the water to the chain so that it can descend and give you the full affect.

It looks like it's failling entirely. Most of the rain isn't going down the chain and is splashing the pillars. You may as well have no chain and have rain just splashing out the hole in gutter.
