    Cost: $75
    Skill Level: Beginner
    Tools List:
    Shovel [amzn.to/32WEu3V]
    Masonry drill [amzn.to/3084USN]
    Shopping List:
    Rain Chain [amzn.to/2OcGp0c]
    Pot [amzn.to/2M5wFlE]
    3/4 inch stone [amzn.to/31CvJvN]
    Decorative river stones [amzn.to/34OsiUK]
    Steps:
    1. Decide where the rain chain will be hung and install a downspout outlet in the gutter in the desired location.
    2. Dig a hole slightly wider than the width of your pot and at least 6” deep directly underneath the downspout outlet.
    3. Fill the hole with the 3/4 inch stone.
    4. Flip the pot upside down and drill a few drainage holes with a masonry drill.
    5. Put the pot in place on top of the hole filled with stone.
    6. Next, hang the rain chain. Most rain chains usually come with specific installation instructions. It should hook right into the downspout outlet.
    7. Once the rain chain in hung, put the chain in the pot and fill the pot about three-quarters of the way with the 3/4 inch stone.
    8. Fill the pot the rest of the way with the river stones. Use whatever is left over to cover the base underneath the pot as well.

Roger installed a Circle Rain Chain, manufactured by Grasslands Road [amzn.to/2O6vBkm] (www.grasslandsroad.com/catalo.... They can be found at some garden shops and also ordered through online retailers.

I love that they used the existing pot - simply putting in holes, and then adding the stones. Such a resourceful idea but simple, and a gorgeous outcome! Love the rain chain, and really enjoy This Old House.

Who ever put that drain in the gutter didn't skimp on the sealant. There's going to have to be a half inch of water in the gutter before it will even be high enough to go over the glob.

    • @btrswt35
      @btrswt35 6 лет назад +38

Jonathan Castaneda No. The gutter and the outlet (the piece inside the gutter with all the sealant around it) shown here is aluminum. It can hold water and it won't corrode.
Old fashioned box gutters (gutters that are actually built into the roof) with terne steel could rust. Those have to be periodically painted inside to help protect the steel. Generally, it's not good to have obstructions like that for the sake of proper flow.

These actually do work. I have used them on the house and the garage. One fix I did, if the chain isn't long enough to go into the pot, simply attache a smaller section of regular chain to the bottom, set that into the pot or bucket. I use a bucket with a drip irrigation hose attached so water collects and then gets dispersed into the planter, great for summer when the rain is sporadic. For winter it has a dual spigot, I simply open the second spigot for winter when the rains are more prolonged.

  • @ACorey6910

Wow ive been looking for a solution like this for a long time. Have a downspout over concrete and need to either collect the rain or get it out to soil. But that requires something to hold the downspout. This is perfect!! Straight down into a rain barrel or something.

The splatter comes from the downspout pipe, dripping around the circular edge. To solve this, I used a 45 degree angle pipe. Thus all the water is directed to the chain. No more splash.

  • @tinderbox218

Looks like the rain still splatters onto the steps. maybe one of the cup-design rain chains would contain the stream better. Edit: I see they address this at the end.
And instead of mulch that looks like compost that will still spatter. Heavier bark mulch might work better against the house.

I made a chain exactly like that for my parents house and I was 19.
Last year when I saw the movie wolverine ? For the first time the new one where this Chinese house had a water chain and I thought how badass it looked.
And it goes good with our house Cuz we have rusted fences and alot of greens and chains and a same exact roof in front of our door so I had the idea for it because there wasnt space to add the gutter pipe either no walls and the chimney in the way so I bought some chain and made one exactly like this with chipped rocks and pebbles and it worked perfect.
Only bad thing that happened was a squirrel tried climbing it and got his tail stuck.

@@kojimasan444 Roger hasn't passed away. He is dealing with a number of health issues at the time and has taken a step back from the show, but I assure you he is still with us. Our thoughts are with him during this time though.

This Old House If you read the comments, you can see we are all worried about Roger!!! So, Roger, if you haven't been to the doc in awhile, go get a checkup please.
And if it's something you don't want to share with us, that's ok too!
But you have a lot of people who LOVE you!! So if there is something we can do for you, please let us know. Until then, just know you are in my prayers...
And of course, we are all aging with you!! 😃 haven't figured out how to escape that yet!!!
And if it's just aches and pain, I suggest a nice long hot tub/massage combo!!
    ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

How can rain water be moved away from the foundation. The roof is flat and projects about 4’ from the side of the building. The holes where the down spouts were are about 3’ from the side of the building. Over the years the rock that is directly under the 4’ projection of the roof has receded into the earth and the water pools and is absorbed along side the foundation. The lawn that is +4’ from the building is now higher than the bed of rocks.
I like the idea of the rain chain but how can we move the water
