There are downsides of peaking too young. Look at Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, etc. No one paid any attention to that old lady from “Titanic” until she threw that damn necklace in the water. We should be thinking “who is out there now slowly making a name for themselves?” Viola Davis, and many performers who find fame later in life, are usually the best at what they do because they have worked very hard for it. And success is easier to enjoy when you are mature. I think early success for some people can be hard to handle. If I were an actress, I would want to have a career like Ms. Davis.
I don’t think you have seen that scene in Doubt, if you saw it you would realise why it’s number 1. She was in the film for one scene that lasted 7 minutes and she got an Oscar nomination
And that is an underated comment. I love HTGAWM, for so many reasons (on my 4th binge watch after only watching it a few months ago!), but it was luke she was made for that role...or the other way round, although we know she wasn't first choice. It's a dark show to begin with, and with many controversial themes, and the casting was brilliant throughout, but nobody imho could have played that role. Her final speech to the jury...i think was a tribute to the actress herself and who she is as a person-deeply flawed, but always trying to get away from trouble (in AK personal life), but you couldn't help but feel the gravitas and power she bought to tjat scene which mirrors Viola Davis's, own eloquence, her strength, the escape from childhood poverty...and her beauty. Inside and out. And i loved that she was able to play along with her inspiration, Cicely Tyson RIP. Those scenes together, were mesmerising. And i am still singing that bloody turkey song!
@Augusto Jorgensen Agreed, Viola Davis is a better actress, I wouldn't say her accomplishments were exaggerated but, she just isn't better than Viola Davis.
I think what’s so great about her acting is that her crying scenes are amazing and ugly. Most crying scenes are made to look cute but her scenes are ugly and raw and you feel her whole emotion pour out of her which I think is what makes the scene even more powerful
I think that what makes her crying scenes powerful is the restraint. Many actors try to cry; she, like people in real life, struggling with real emotions shows that desperate balance people try to strike when feeling strong feelings, but trying to not be overwhelmed by them.
You can’t be serious. She plays the same talentless forgettable role in every movie she’s in. The same dramatic and intense long suffering character. It’s pathetic and annoying every time she tries to stand out in a role by being loud and angry or bawling her eyes out with the same disgusting snot bubble running down her lip. That horrible scene in Fences is a perfect demonstration of how fake and tired her performances are.
Viola Davis is such a rawness that makes the screen disappear...she is on a different level when she is in tears and pain.. not afraid to look a mess and make you feel vulnerable..she is bold to reveal all that is uncomfortable, ugly, beautiful and human.... that's a real legend in acting!!!!!! ...
Thank you for putting Doubt at number one!!!!! I truly believe that should’ve been her first Oscar win. She did so much with so little. Such depth in a matter of minutes. Yes!!!!!
NOT ONE BAD PERFORMANCE. She could sweep the floor in the background and critics would single out her powerful technique and presence. One of the greatest actors EVER.
Yeah not just one BUT ALL of them are horrendous. Watching her trying to act is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard. She plays the same overly obnoxious and dramatic character in every movie with disgusting snot bubbles running down her mouth while performing the world’s fakest cry scenes loo
I’m not someone that sees racism in everything. I just see facts, That being said here is one fact that can not be ignored. For years Meryl Streep won an Oscar for every film she made. Some she just did an accent for and boom Oscar. She has never moved me to tears from watching her lay her soul out on the screen for all to see like Miss Davis has. She is the best actress of our time and watching her and Denzel together is like magic
Only 3 wins of 18 nominations? 👎 Your statements about Mrs. Streep are just wrong. If anything, she's been underestimated and taken for granted in the industry. She's a force of nature as an actress. I still remember SILKWOOD and I was just a CHILD when it aired! And I LOVE me some Viola Davis! SHE is a freak of nature. Just AMAZING!
I think they are both amazing actresses in their own ways. I feel they shouldn't be compared to one another, but both celebrated for their undeniable talents in film and live theater. I love both of them as people, as well as performers.
Viola Davis is the unbeatable Queen of SLAYING at EVERYTHING she does. One more thing, she should win an award for all her empowering speeches throughout her award season clean sweep. Hands down Queen Viola, we're not worthy indeed!!
The first time I saw Viola was on an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent and was blown away by her performance. Little did I know that there were many more like that to come. Just a consummate actor.
One word to describe Viola Davis : Outstanding, grandiose, Phenomenal and list goes on. Sorry I said one word but she deserves more than one word to describe her.

I didn't pay much attention to her until i watched How to get away with murder, bt after watching the show she's now my favorite actress... she's just great.

Ray03595 fun fact she got the tony for the same role in 2010
YUP. When that snot started...Knew she had it on lock!

Yes
Actresses like Viola Davis and Meryl Streep. . . they don't make them like that anymore. They are literally in a league of their own.
No, they do. They're just overlooked like Viola has been throughout most of her life.
I bet there are many great actors in other countries that don't get much attention because they are not in Hollywood.
Meryl Streep has been exceptionally lucky, there are many many more actors of immense caliber present.
@Augusto Jorgensen Agreed, Viola Davis is a better actress, I wouldn't say her accomplishments were exaggerated but, she just isn't better than Viola Davis.
@Augusto Jorgensen are you talking about Meryl or Viola. Because Viola deserves every bit of recognition she is getting. Her filmography is insane.
HTGAWM when she loses Bonnie, Now that was raw crying. I literally felt like I was on set with her. Damn this woman lifts my spirits.
I felt that too. I didn't realize how scared I am of losing my best friend

Everything she’s in!!! The Help, Fences even Suicide Squad.....everything
JAYLA ROSE Agreed
Law abiding citizen
She was the only reason for me to watch 'Suicide squad'.
Jared Leto sent the other cast members of Suicide Squad various inappropriate objects. Not Viola Davis. Apparently, even the Joker was intimidated.
Only good part of Suicide squad
I see Viola and I click real fast. It's not that complicated really❤

Anyone else think she could have beaten Emma Stone at the Oscars. If Viola put herself in the Leading Actress category at year?
I wish she would but bc of Oscars underlying racism of the best actress category along with Emma's popularity of the time would be possible.
I believe it would've been Emma vs. Viola for the win had Viola campaigned lead for Fences (where she really belongs).
