I think that might have just been the sweetest way to end a panel I’ve ever seen. Shout out to all the parents and grandparents who not only put up with our at times silly demands but actually went out of their way to meet said demands when they could. I salute you noble toy hunters.
My son liked the action figures we gave him for Christmas, such as Outback, Clutch, Breaker, and Snow Job. They reminded him of the 1970's G.I.Joe dolls.
You summarized it so well. 1987 is the year that I stopped cold turkey buying G.I.Joe's. I saw these weird vehicles/figures and said. That has nothing to do with REAL military hardware. I just lost complete interest on what it has become. I started buying old G.I.Joe toys from Garage sales, flea markets and toy shows. I remember my dad telling me. Why do you get new ones? I just don't like them. He thought it was because I wanted to save money. I feel the same way about Cobra LA.
Sci-Fi was my favorite Joe! :) I was 9 years old and got it at a Canadian Airforce Base's toy shop in Lahr, Germany. G.I.Joe wasn't a big hit in Germany at that time and you only found a handful figures and vehicles in german toy shops, but that canadian toy shop had everything. We had canadian GIs living in our house back then and they sometimes took us kids shopping with them (The base entrance was o.c. guarded by military police and you could only get in as guests of an airforce member). I'll never forget when I first set foot into that toy shop, everything was so overwhelming, I blacked out for a few seconds before the light came back and I was in heaven :D
I remember my stepmom Alicia when I asked her hey how about this? I pointed out the USS Flagg at Toys R Us, she looked at it for a solid two minutes, Nope! Well I had most of the 84-85 line up that I opened up on Xmas that year so I cannot complain 😁
This was fantastic and you got some great reactions, the room exploded over the Chuckles section. I'm so proud and pleased for you two!!! Love and support as always.
I got Crazy Legs just for the cool parachute harness. I never really played with the figure, but I strapped that 'chute on all the Joes that I actually dug, along with Ripcord's oxygen mask.
I had that one! With the rucksack and removable, angled military flashlights. I loved it. Falcon and Beachhead were my other favorite military looking ones, too.
20:07..." Chuckles the Movie " One of my favorite Joe's. If not my favorite. And I agree with your theory (Chuckles being Snake Eyes) as this theory makes both Chuckles all the more cooler. In the Cartoon Chuckles speaks, but the G.I. Joe Cartoon is not the mythology for the Toys. That " Chuckles the Movie " clip was great!
Great video... I was that kid that hated military toys and loved scifi, but these changes came way too late to snag me. I actually loved the post 87 era stuff as it was rather cool and imaginative, but without the cartoon to back it up kids just didn't care.
The Vector jet also looks strikingly similar to the Star Bird from Milton Bradley. Both have a white hull, a brightly colored canopy, detachable laser turret on the back, and dark wingtips. Hasbro seems to have done a mashup of the two off-brand spacecraft.
I liked the Sci-Fi figure, mostly because I'm a sci-fi geek. Having said that, the toy line did...um...evolve in a crazy way. Joe versus aliens was what finally caused me to check out.
Good panel, but I was kind of hoping that you would have mentioned the Agent Tracker figure, which some say connected GIJoe with MASK. Also wished the cameraman would have gotten a shot of Snakeyes. But still a good panel, keep it up.
Another great panel. Interesting Chuckles and Snake Eyes conspiracy. I am from Tennessee and Breaker was my first Joe(still have the stiff arm) Breaker was from Gattlinburg and I am from East Tennessee. I never knew that Fast Draw was a Tennessean as well. Gotta find one now. Thank you Two. Awesome as usual.
I love Serpentor in the comic books...he was created in a real kewl way and Dr mindbender was kewl in the comic book also but in the cartoon over the top
I never collected GI Joe, it just wasn't my thing as a kid. However you guys actually made me feel like I truly missed out on something grand. Thanks for posting these amazing panels for those of us who not only missed out on some amazing toys, but also couldn't get to Dragon Con.
They even made a Matt Tracker figure from MASK part of the G.I. Joe toyline. Which is kinda fitting, since it borders on the idea of MASK and VENOM being part of a shared universe with G.I.Joe and Transformers.
I like the Con Panels best! Would love it if you guys did a video on the X-Men toys from the early 90s. Most of them are easy to get your hands on at a cheap price.
This was so awesome (as always)!!! I remember as a kid when all the Cobra-la stuff came out and thinking...welp..I guess I dont like toys anymore if they are like this lololol
Thor13332 He makes perfect sense when you figure that the competent people in Cobra command would eventually get tired of taking orders from that moron Cobra Commander.
It's included with the GI Joe ARAH second season, first five episodes.. It was released a few years ago I believe. I just looked and there is a individual copy on ebay without the rest of the season.
In the comics Serpentor is actually quite interesting. The concept behind him is awesome, but the look of the figure is off and kind of anachronistic. He actually looks like an ancient Aztec warrior of sorts...
I believe I was in fourth grade the year of mutt and junkyard, spirit iron knife, firefly, storm shadow etc were released. There was a red headed kid named Sean in our class whose father owned a construction company and was building in nearby Albany (capital of NY, and area with two very large malls right near each other as well as toys r us and Kay bee) and it seemed every couple of days, Sean was bringing in the newest had to have figure. In my area the mutt junkyard combo was a really big find for awhile for that release year. My parents would usually wait till Christmas and my birthday and bombard me with joes, which was great but new joes were like new I phones, when the new ones were released, you had to have them yesterday! My dad would always find them for me, great father, like your mom, trying to have the best for their child even if it was not family budget friendly (within reason, I never owned the Flagg or the shuttle.) thanks for the trip down memory lane. Oh and the biggest travesty of that kid Sean having the newest joes? He did not really care about them. He was in love with football and soccer and they were just bragging point for him.
Those 2 Malls were Crossgates, and Colonie Center Mall. Both had the BEST KayBee stores, as well as Toys R Us across the street from Colonie Center. I didnt know that dip shit Sean however I knew many "Other Seans" believe me.
@Dan the Man, yep, you are correct, those were the malls, and they surprisingly still exist today. I live about a hundred miles west in CNY now, and Utica had lost one of its 90’s malls (only Sangertown remains) and Syracuse has Destiny Mall which used to be Carousel Mall. Now that the Toys R Us in New Hartford is gone there are no real toy stores in the whole area. I used to live southeast of Albany back in the day, would be about a 30 minute trip to Crossgates back then. Surprisingly I found a bunch of new figures in the local Rite Aid back then. They were $2.99. And they always had a bunch on the pegs
You know, Retroblasting is my top YT channel. Even topics that don't really interest me are presented in a very informative, entertaining and in-depth way that is fun to watch. And it's nice to learn about things that were not on my radar, it widens the horizon which is always a good thing.
Great panel! I loved Golobulos though. As a kid, I gave no shits for anything but immediate satisfaction and coolability. For me, Golobulos was cool enough to hang around my Boba Fett, Horenetoid, and be used as a make shift whip sword.
A serious Chuckles question. Why does the figure bare a stunningly resemblance to a young-Ish Michael Caine, Dressed as a middle aged Michael Caine from "Jaws :The Revenge"???? Ironically, Michael Caine was almost 007 once.
I couldn't help notice the similarly of the Cobra pogo ballistic ball and the Capsule Corp time machine from Dragonball Z, could Dr.Briefs be secretly working for Cobra? Love the show and thank you for preserving our childhood.
So there was an '86 Falcon and an 87 Falcon? I loved the 87 lineup! I also loved Cobra-la and Serpentor and Scoop! What can I say? I'm a rebel. or, I'm insane. The answer is pending.
I always assumed that someone was a fan of St Rock because one of his troops was called Ice Cream Soldier. It was far too coincidental to me that GI Joe named a guy the same thing. It's not exactly a commonly used phrase or anything.
I usually just watched your reviews and restorations, never realized how entertaining and informative these panels were! Will watch them all, great content!
Five years later and this is still the best panel of all time, in my opinion. Hilarious and full of insight from start to finish. I personally refuse to have Sci-Fi in my collection (otherwise I have a complete 82-87 figure collection, minus sub teams, which I don't care for either). Incidentally, I quite like Serpentor. Larry Hama made him a compelling character in the comic; a formidable foe for the Joes as well as Cobra Commander himself. The figure is ghastly though, and he tended to die in battle a lot in my childhood bedroom.
Techno Viper was one of my favorite GI-Joe figures. I thought he was just totally awesome looking. I also really liked Hit & Run, Repeater, snake eyes, and storm shadow.
Great panel. I had no idea that characters like "Serpentor" and "Cobra-La" weren't really that popular with fans, well they were probably popular with cartoon fans, but probably not fans of the comics. I had at one point the "Marine Gung-Ho" figure when I was a kid, but I mostly saw it as a figure of the main character from the show "Major Dad". I also had no idea that Stephen King and his son contributed to the "G.I. Joe" toyline, but the idea of the Magician was pretty silly for a military themed toyline, that'd be like making a figure of Merlin from "Excalibur" and having him fight alongside the Joes. Also...Ice Cream Soldier, just why?! Interesting note, the character of "Raptor Man" (the guy with the wings that wasn't "Nemesis Enforcer" from the movie) and that buzzsaw pod thing were featured in the NES "G.I. Joe" video game.
Someone can do a huge series on all of the different G.I. Joe groups that they came out with. I collected the figures from 1986 to 1994, but I waned bad in the final years because of the constant releases of characters that I already owned. I liked the Eco Warriors and the Drug Enforcement figures ( which were not mentioned) because most of them were original characters.
Besides the reasons you state, another reason to create small 3 3/4" was the prices of oil that for those times were prohibitive to create larger action figures. I enjoyed the lecture, thank you.
This was 40 minutes long, but I enjoyed it so much that it felt like 10! Watched the whole video and agreed with every single point you guys made! Keep up the amazing work!
Replayed the 'Chuckles Movie' segment many times. Great editing! Had to go back and watch your prior Chuckles vid again. Good job M&M. Thanks for posting these for us that haven't been lucky enough to see you live yet.
My greatest lament with GI Joe was their jumping the shark and going all sci-fi instead of sticking with military realism. The Chuckles/Snake-Eyes theory is now head canon for me though. Fun fact: Ice Cream Soldier was also the name of one of Sgt. Rock's Easy Company soldiers from DC comics!
I will never ever look at Chuckles the same way again. You have given me the first new Joe info I have heard in a long time. Thank you sir, Great presentation
RetroBlasting Uh, okay? Just saying the other crowd seemed more engaged than this one. I don't get the hostility, tho. I made an observation with no intent of malice. Your jokes & callbacks were solid, but with the exception of a few instances, the crowd was strangely silent. I laughed out loud at the jokes. Apologies that my comment was seen as a slight or insult. 🖖
I liked Serpantor maybe because of the horror aspect with him being created from all the famous dead warriors. Cobra La again I think the horror element of these mutant creature guys appealed to me. Even the groups like Battle Force 2000 appealed to my love for Sci-Fi. These weird figures let me play out imaginary scenarios from movies like The Terminator and Aliens or other 80's Horror/Sci-Fi movies.
Could you cut this "historically samurai didn't like ninja" I've heard you say several times? Ninja were literally mercenaries - there are well attested instances when ninja in full samurai armour fought side by side samurai as hired footsoldiers.
OMG!! They even had Hector Garrido paint Owen King's likeness as Sneak Peak card art!!! What the flying @**K!!!
You summarized it so well. 1987 is the year that I stopped cold turkey buying G.I.Joe's. I saw these weird vehicles/figures and said. That has nothing to do with REAL military hardware. Touching story about your Mom. Excellent panel as always you guys!
+Matt Leuty thanks Matt!
The Defiant, IMO the greatest playset ever....Also proud to say I still have most of my original figures in my coll. still./
I got Crazy Legs just for the cool parachute harness. I never really played with the figure, but I strapped that 'chute on all the Joes that I actually dug, along with Ripcord's oxygen mask.
That harness is amazing for sure.
You didn't mention Tunnel Rat. He was a good 87 figure, and he was based on Larry Hama.
I had that one! With the rucksack and removable, angled military flashlights. I loved it. Falcon and Beachhead were my other favorite military looking ones, too.
Who
Ya there are so many joes! And as a ww2 buff how did you just say soldiers don’t take the time to paint their vehicles?
20:07..." Chuckles the Movie " One of my favorite Joe's. If not my favorite. And I agree with your theory (Chuckles being Snake Eyes) as this theory makes both Chuckles all the more cooler. You have to be a Chicago Bears fan to get the Fridge, we were still riding high on Bears Superbowl win.
The Vector jet also looks strikingly similar to the Star Bird from Milton Bradley. Both have a white hull, a brightly colored canopy, detachable laser turret on the back, and dark wingtips. Hasbro seems to have done a mashup of the two off-brand spacecraft.
Awesome! Loved the whole thing! Have to admit that I loved the comics more than the cartoon, but the cartoon got me into the toys.
My Joe days ended during 1986, but your presentation caught me up on the zany stuff I passed into my late teens blissfully unaware of.
Timothy Ward perhaps, but as it tied into another popular toy line, from another company to boot, I though it was at least a mention.
Based on looks alone I think the Cobra Raven is a mixture of design elements from both the SR-71 and the Firefox... and that's a good thing!
@@ru4skuba The toy was released in 1986 and the film Firefox was released in 1982.... So yes, it could have been inspired by the Firefox too.
Ice Cream Soldier? Thank you! I'm going to win so many bets with that one. BTW, very informative panel.
I love Serpentor in the comic books...he was created in a real kewl way and Dr mindbender was kewl in the comic book also but in the cartoon over the top
Hey, they used giant Buzz Board in the Avengers: Infinity War movie! As soon as they pop up, I thought "It's the Cobra Roto-Tiller!"
Sneak a peek was using his scope to look at lady J
I never collected GI Joe, it just wasn't my thing as a kid. However you guys actually made me feel like I truly missed out on something grand. Thanks for posting these amazing panels for those of us who not only missed out on some amazing toys, but also couldn't get to Dragon Con.
Yes, I agree. After Serpentor it went down hill from there. G.I. Joe RIP 1982 - 1986
Amazing & Informative Video. Thank you so much!
Guys you did a great job, thanks for all your hard work!! Really enjoyed the forum...
Thanks dawg.
And knowing too much ruined the battle.
I loved Krazy Legs, I can almost remember the day I got him, also got the ice cream soldier
i owned the GI joe aircraft carrier when I was a child
and he is right - I mostly used it as a table...
another awesome panel. many thanks for putting this together.
New to the channel and absolutely love your stuff ! Thanks for being real with a great sense of humor !
The HAVOC and STUN were from 1986.
I think I can watch RETROBLASTING GIJOE videos all day. I require more.
I loved this!! excellent in every way
Ironically, Chuckles wasn't made available in the UK.
Terrific panel. Thanks for sharing.
They even made a Matt Tracker figure from MASK part of the G.I. Joe toyline.
Which is kinda fitting, since it borders on the idea of MASK and VENOM being part of a shared universe with G.I.Joe and Transformers.
Damn this was awesome! Thank you so much for this, I appreciate it.
WISh this guy was in charge of the Joes at Hasbro.....
Good stuff! I mostly share the feelings in this video to a tee! Sometime not long after '86 was when I quit.
You guys are awesome and you know your history, keep up the good work
I like the Con Panels best! Would love it if you guys did a video on the X-Men toys from the early 90s. Most of them are easy to get your hands on at a cheap price.
Despite the rest of the line that year, the bats android trooper was a cool toy.
Excellent presentation and history of our beloved action heroes!
This was so awesome (as always)!!! I remember as a kid when all the Cobra-la stuff came out and thinking...welp..I guess I dont like toys anymore if they are like this lololol
Great work guys! I like Serpentor! Why? I love history so the fact he is a combination of several historical figures was great.
That's true. He was a sober competent leader in the comics. Not at all like the over the top version in the toon.
In the comics Serpentor is actually quite interesting. The concept behind him is awesome, but the look of the figure is off and kind of anachronistic. He actually looks like an ancient Aztec warrior of sorts...
And there I always believed that I was the only one who thought Sci-Fi looked like Robocop!
Loved this thanks guys!
I did like Battle Armor Cobra Commander, always seen him fight right alongside his troops. Instead of sitting back somewhere and yelling retreat!
I believe I was in fourth grade the year of mutt and junkyard, spirit iron knife, firefly, storm shadow etc were released. Ugh! That was like my "friend" Philip - a sports kid who had everything, including the Flagg, but didn't care about any of it.
RetroBlasting
Yeah... Screw Sean and Philip !!!
Those 2 Malls were Crossgates, and Colonie Center Mall. Both had the BEST KayBee stores, as well as Toys R Us across the street from Colonie Center. I didnt know that dip shit Sean however I knew many "Other Seans" believe me.

One of my Birthdays I got the whole collection of Battle Force 2000 Vehicles. :)
Even at 7, I thought the Drednocks ran a gay bar
I always liked those early 90's GI joes. I liked the crazy over the topness.
I feel blessed that I was on my way to college by the the time Joe began fighting dinosaurs and aliens!
Awesome presentation! Loved it.
I had the Sci-fi figure when I was a kid. I retconned him into a ninja from the future.
You know, Retroblasting is my top YT channel. Even topics that don't really interest me are presented in a very informative, entertaining and in-depth way that is fun to watch. And it's nice to learn about things that were not on my radar, it widens the horizon which is always a good thing.

A serious Chuckles question.
Why does the figure bare a stunningly resemblance to a young-Ish Michael Caine, Dressed as a middle aged Michael Caine from "Jaws :The Revenge"???? Ironically, Michael Caine was almost 007 once.
Outstanding! Gotta get you two to RI Comic Con .
i love these videos!
Simply great!
That was a great history lesson down the darkside of the line I didn't know happened.
Micheals mom is awesome! I love this channel!
Neon Copperhead came befoer Sci-Fi
No mention of the Street Fighter Line?
Only Guile fits in with The Joes
Five years later and this is still the best panel of all time, in my opinion. Hilarious and full of insight from start to finish. I personally refuse to have Sci-Fi in my collection (otherwise I have a complete 82-87 figure collection, minus sub teams, which I don't care for either).
Incidentally, I quite like Serpentor. Larry Hama made him a compelling character in the comic; a formidable foe for the Joes as well as Cobra Commander himself. The figure is ghastly though, and he tended to die in battle a lot in my childhood bedroom.
I like when RB covers GI Joe. My favorite toy line/ comic book from the 80's!
Such a great duo. Would love to buy the both of 'em a pint someday. Thanks for being, you two!
"Watch out GI Joe, I'm gonna get you with my alligator farm."
1986 When GI Joe became more articulated Adventure People.
Ted Mosby knows G.I. Joe!
Crystal Ball: When Dennis DeYoung joined COBRA after Styx broke up.
And remember, you can't spell "Slaughter" without "Laughter"
I'm happy & amazed they too noticed the Casino Royale/Chuckles cross-over. Instead of CIA, Chuck was MI-6.
Besides the reasons you state, another reason to create small 3 3/4" was the prices of oil that for those times were prohibitive to create larger action figures. I enjoyed the lecture, thank you.
About Sci-fi, we thought we wasn't a G.IJoe figure when we first saw him. We thought he was GREEN TWO of the Super Sentai Team called BIOMAN. :)
Thanks for being a part of this with us, Matthew!
I absolutely love that your mom was there!
I will never ever look at Chuckles the same way again. You have given me the first new Joe info I have heard in a long time. Thank you sir, Great presentation
Thanks Jim! Appreciate the support and kind words!
Enjoyed it, but the crowd seemed so so compared to the earlier panel you uploaded.
I wasn't aware I had any control over the crowds at Dragon Con. I'll ask permission to make more demands of their expression levels next year.
hostility is what they do best around here. only praise is allowed. all other comments will be met with disdain
Really funny moment in this video (4:48) when Michael and Melinda both say "That's 1980's money." Ha Ha!
What a great video! Watched all 40 minutes of it. This was a lot of fun to watch. :)
Could you cut this "historically samurai didn't like ninja" I've heard you say several times? Ninja were literally mercenaries - there are well attested instances when ninja in full samurai armour fought side by side samurai as hired footsoldiers.
This is your best Dragon*Con Presentation yet! Really enjoyed it!
HA! When I asked for the USS Flagg for Christmas in '85, my dad actually told me I was "out of my mind".
