The general rule with GW datacards is that they tend to expire really fast - between couple of months to a year is not uncommon. So it's really a luxury choice, since we have access to rules online now, we should also get some printable fanmade cards as well eventually. While cool, I wouldn't get these unless for a team you play very often with and can get value back fast.
Yeah, the price point really makes sense for a large army game where you buy one for your "main" army but makes less sense in Kill Team where many kill teamers have a huge range of different teams.
I always use MTG D20 roll down life point dice to track hit points. Because they’re just so abundant, come is many colours and are basically free (you get one in every pre-release kit and fat pack)
The d20 topples too easily. Kill Team is the perfect excuse to use the d12 because they are one of the most stable dice and the least useful. At least you can drop d4s as Caltrops.
Phil, if you are in Colchester then why not use 4TK to buy your box at 20% off. I used them for the Leviathan and they were great. I live in Essex and will getting the box for 5% off, a second set of approved cards plus two faction cards sets from my local independent store in Essex. Happy to pay close to RRP to pick it up on release day and to support a local store who pretty much garantee me any box on release
Fair comment. I have been to 4TK a few times over the years, tried playing upstairs in casual games, and played in a shade spire tournament way back when, but I never seemed to really gel with them for a couple of reasons: 1) I find the store quite cliquey and unwelcoming with everyone mainly interested in playing 2000 points 40k matched play, they don't seem to have a Kill Team scene. 2) I find the gaming area a bit uncomfortable as a place to actually use, up a flight of stairs, which isn't always wonderful with my disability and from memory the seats available are the sort of high stools you can perch on - which I don't find comfortable. 3) They have a policy where orders from the website get a normal discount, but orders from in store have a much smaller discount, and the manager cheerfully explained to me this was because people in the shop would impulse buy stuff and he didn't have to compete with other online stores, I find this kind of predatory, and he didn't even seem to think it was anything other then totally normal. All this said, I know there is a community of people who love that store including some of the kids who play 40k in my club, so it is genuinely doing a good thing for the hobby and the community, it just... isn't for me. All that said, I still drive round in my car if I really need a pot of paint or a can of spray and the local GW is sold out! Paying for shipping on cans of spray is for mugs.
Re: the bases with dials - I foresee someone getting them & then reverse engineer them to put out as STL or on Etsy. The sticking point for me is not the little cut-out, but rather how hard they are to read.
My issue with them is that you will likely have to pick the model up to use and therefore the accuracy of placing the model in the same place and orientation. I will be stocking with my wound dice......
Im on the fence about the cards. They have said on the record that they are going digital so any updates can be done directly on the PDFs and App. This means that after the first dataslate the cards could be redundant. But saying that im glad the void scarred are getting cards. These and the votann are my top picks for the new edition.
If I get this at all it won’t be from element games but my local hobby shop. Anyway the reason why you in Colchester will get your element games delivery before your friend in Liverpool is because element games themselves will receive delivery from the warehouse on Tuesday the 17th¹ but you can get into big big trouble with games workshop if you sell the stuff before the official release day (this happened to my local hobby shop) and so they forced to hold onto the stock until they know it won’t get to the consumer hands before the release day thus for Colchester they’ll ship it out on Wednesday so it arrives on or after the Saturday release but for local address they’ll wait till the Monday after before shipping to avoid same day shipping before the release date. Element games can’t afford to piss off GW as they send you too the dog house for like two months ¹Yeah I’m not joking, Elemental Game has to order the stock and receive it from Game Workshop before they even know how many orders they are going to receive.
Thanks for the video. I think I will go for the dials but I think you are right. The holes do look small, also where would you orient the gap on the model. I guess the back is most sensible as your modes will mostly point away from you and it does ruin the aesthetic from the front. Shame they are not offering something for if you head into a GW store to order. I like supporting my local store.
You are very welcome, I really don't like those dials the more I think about them. Having to pick up your model to adjust its wounds each time is going to become annoying.
I don’t reckon that you’re supposed to actually supposed to glue the mini to the counter bases. I think you just put them under the model. But maybe not if the number won’t show.
I’m not sure if I want to bother with this at all. Just so much stuff that is probably going to be difficult to get ahold of. And, as you say, you probably have this week to decide what pieces you want to buy, and be ready with your card out first thing Saturday. I just don’t play competitively, so to be honest, I already have everything I need to play a casual game.
You called it. I like the card packs being released in lockstep with the re-releases of the teams. I’ll have to see the cards to decide if they’re worth the money.
Exactly. It's a win-win for GW to make a good app, but if they can't be bothered or just want to force their customers into spending even more money, then I guess we can just continue to use 3rd party apps or sites
Im with you on the freebies. After the excllellent skaventide release day command point tokens, I was hoping for something equally nice to grab the preorder via my local kent warhammer shop for this release. On the basis the 'better' option, i.e. something not limited to a single team use, is to go with a discount shop, i will be doing so!
@TabletopImpulse all sorted with my local discount/gaming shop. The gent running it has said he's had to confirm a minimum 6 boxes on his buy in from GW to get hold of the tokens. I have my name down for the first box and tokens in. I think 6 is the limit like you've said
That is a really weird choice and I had not even noticed. I literally just assumed the teams in boxes would get data cards. I really do hope the app turns out to be good.
the bases would have been better if they were bigger and you could just blu-tac the models base to it instead. then it could be used for multiple teams. but also need a 32mm version
They’ve already said there’ll be two more waves with other teams coming. So presumably everything that’s “valid” teams according to that list of 23 or so, will all come in those waves.
It's insane to me that at places like Warhammer World they would insist that you use officially released books for core rules and teams, when just about everything has been modified or updated by balance changes. Do you need to have those changes printed off too? Madness.
100% agree with the barbed wire rules - they were the only part of the rules that I can recall that I just couldn't make any sense of. Also - will be really disappointed if the core rules aren't (officially) available for free online. Releasing books is pointless when balance changes etc make parts of them redundant within a few months. Ultimately though, if stuff like core rules and datacards aren't available online, or the app is crap, people are just going to continue using 3rd party sites for rules and datacards. Really, REALLY hoping this won't be the case, but it wouldn't be the first time GW try to squeeze as much money from their consumers as they possibly can.
The nice thing about the team rules being free is that we can have a really nice website which isnt covered in horrible adverts made by the community, because it wont be illegal to make a third party version,
I love cards but there’s no waaaay I’m gonna buy many of them for £19 a pop which is what they are… I might get them for a couple of my favourite teams. Personally I think house ruling Octarius will be super easy in terms of terrain rules… the bigger issue I think is no maps for octarius with the new missions and whether anyone in the community is going to bother creating a new set of maps for it. Q for the competitive community their really. I for one want to be able to keep using my octarius and have a way to set it up easily and fairly.
Cards are definitely priced as if you are going to buy one deck for your army, but everyone who plays Kill Team ends up with multiple teams. House ruling Octarius won't be hard, it's just a case of people realising they have too and talking about it before the game, I think a community map pack will emerge.
little more expensive than I was hoping for. I'll wait for vespids to be stand alone I guess. not in a real rush honestly. edit: not sure why i need the rules if they are free. and i don't live near warhammer world. so i guess that is a plus. edit 2: Orks are only good for 1 year in tournament play, so if you care about that then consider that as well. at this point I would not buy into them unless you are a casual player or play at home or something
@@TabletopImpulse either plausible interpretation of the rules make razor wire a brilliant control piece for a team with 7” movement. There’s always going to be a lane you don’t want your opponent’s operatives coming down.
I will get the cards for playing at home with my son, but I am under no illusion that they will be utterly useless and incorrect following the first balance dataslate........
If the app isn't as good as that Russian site most of us use then there's still always that Russian site... lol don't get the cards they'll be outdated in no time

it is bit scary that we live in times, when box being available for 45 minutes is considered to not be in short supply ;)
Pretty tired of this, it’s one of the reasons I’m not sure I want to bother.
It's the Games Workshop way!
The main box has come in at £145 before discount, pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I too am really happy with that price.
I always use MTG D20 roll down life point dice to track hit points. Because they’re just so abundant, come is many colours and are basically free (you get one in every pre-release kit and fat pack)

Mrs TI likes D20's from MTG.
For the grenades, I expect people will them once or twice but the novelty will soon wear off and they will buy smoke grenade templates from etsy......
Hard agree.

Yeah, if you go on Etsy right now, there are much better dial and counter options available.
I can only imagine constantly picking up the model to fiddle with the wheel would be really annoying during play.
Yeah, that’s a legitimate concern
Im on the fence about the cards. They have said on the record that they are going digital so any updates can be done directly on the PDFs and App. This means that after the first dataslate the cards could be redundant.

My advice would be to wait and see what the app and free rules are like, and then pick up the cards later if you really want them.

I want the new terrain. I may even get B-D. I have a crippling terrain addiction & delusions of running a tournament.
do it.
The crit ops cards will be a necessary purchase.
The token sheets will show up on eBay.
Probably, probably. But they could be included in an app.

Weird we don't get data cards in the Hivestorm box for the Tempestus Aquilons or Stingwings, nor are they going to be available separately on release.
That is a really weird choice and I had not even noticed. I literally just assumed the teams in boxes would get data cards. I really do hope the app turns out to be good.
My local game store still has the blood angel box in stock
Local gaming stores that don't sell much online sometimes just have stuff that's sold out everywhere else. You may well be able to flip that on ebay.
the bases would have been better if they were bigger and you could just blu-tac the models base to it instead. then it could be used for multiple teams. but also need a 32mm version
That could work I suppose, but then all your models are weirdly tall and we are still a true line of sight game!

Could you write the link for those 3d?
It's interesting to me that they know the correct size already.

I assume so, yes.
