    Congratulations on the new camera🎉. I’m looking forward to you getting to know this one and sharing it with us. I still have a soft spot for Nikon, since i have a D7500 with a Sigma 150-600 C. If Nikon comes out with a Mirrorless D500, I might go back. I have just started using BlackRapid Cross-shot straps which i screw into the tripod collar, which makes it easier to carry the Sigma.

      I've always had a weird relationship with Nikon in that the last time I shot them properly was in the film days, but I went with Canon when I got my first DSLR just because it had a wider selection of more affordable lenses (e.g. 4 different 70-200 L models at different prices). Oh how the tables have turned 😅 It'll be interesting to see what their next model will be - an APS-C sports body would be really interesting, maybe a Z4? 🤔
      I do have a BlackRapid strap that attaches to my bag actually, and I really like the attachment system. Only problem with that one is that I then feel like I'm trapped in the bag even more. I might have to look at a non-bag one and try to ditch the bag more often instead 😀

    Glad to see you have a camera back, sad to see the X-H2s issue you had seems to be more common than it should be. I'll have to test my 2s and see how it goes. I guess worst case used A9II or the Z8 could be replacements if I end up replicating the same issue. I agree with you, from the moment I replaced my A9 mk1 I've enjoyed using the Fuji, but I also don't baby my gear. It stays in good condition, but I make it work for the image so the risk of it randomly failing is concerning

      There's something about me that naturally finds bugs in things through normal use 🙈 Hopefully it really is just an isolated case, I think Fujifilm is releasing some really great cameras at good price points.

      @@robert_may I know what you mean, I've had friends like that and then I never ever win sweepstakes. Agreed with you, I like a lot of what Fuji does, but maybe an X-T20/30 and a small lens is the way to go over their X-H stuff with beefy lenses

      Actually their customer service was really good when I broke a lens and got it repaired! Main reason for me was that the low-light capabilities were causing me trouble because of how dark and miserable it is here in Wales a lot of the year 😭

      @@RyougiVector Mostly the issues with colour loss when underexposed at ISO 12800 or higher. I talk a bit about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/UIBr3IBLnDc/видео.html, if that's useful 😀 General gist is that the OM-1 has a magenta colour shift and a loss of other colour data at ISO 12800 and above if you're not exposing perfectly, and unfortunately my local area is very often dull and dark, so I'm usually up in the high ISO numbers 😭
      If you have decent light or can shoot at lower ISOs more frequently, I still think the OM-1 is a fantastic camera.

      @@robert_may ah yeah i've come across this scenario recently where i'm shooting in low light for action for the E-M1ii and E-M1X, and i've come away from that with the conclusion that I'd rather bump up the ISO than underexpose.

    I do admire your logic, mine is similar. "I could spend 1000 quid to solve my storage issue for ProRes 422... or... I could get a Z9, plunge into debt (especially when ff zoom lenses emerge that will cost the earth!) whilst simultaneously adding back pain to my ongoing life goals as I hike this stuff around Wales 😁
    I'm actually not joking, this is how my brain works too, it's just refreshing to hear of someone else doing it. I almost spat my coffee out when you said the Z9! 🤣
    But seriously, congrats, it is a wicked camera and I'm sure you'll enjoy it, or at least I'll enjoy hearing your future rants about it.
    A couple points if I may;
    - What is the exposure compensation issue with the XH2S in Manual mode? I do mainly event work, not often in Manual mode but Sv or Av etc. Correct me if I am wrong but there is no exposure compensation in Manual mode, you control exposure with the three variables. Ev Compensation only for some Auto mode like Sv or Av?
    - Since you brought up the mount issue, I have seen a few posts in Fuji FB groups where other members are asking if a little play is normal. Wide varied responses from 'yeh mine does this too, its fine' to 'no, mine is tight, it should not do that'.
    I don't do birding but rather event work, my heaviest lens is a 1.2kg manual focus lens without contacts, I can't honestly say that I am noticing any deterioration with my mount for any of my lightish prime glass (or that lens).
    It feels like such a shame, because a lot of birders are going the XH2S+100-400 or 150-600 for their wildlife fix because the FF alternatives are really pricey.
    PS You may recall my issue (i emailed about it), I managed to fix it on my own with a factory reset, I have a job this Friday night which will be the first real test since the problem occurred, cross your fingers for me! I also found out you can save your configs with XAquire software, the only issue being I have to connect the camera up to a computer to restore the config. I believe Nikon allow you to do this via SD Card, AArgh! Fuji! Implement this too! If crashes and resets are the norm of the modern era we need good resinstallation practices!
    PPS I am in a couple of Nikon groups and they also seem to have the issue of being duped into thinking their shots are being recorded safely in the field yet when get home are missing files or zero images on the card 😂
    Welcome to the future!

      Haha I'm sure there'll be some proper rants at some point 😆
      The exposure compensation thing in manual mode is really weird - you're right, in that I use it with Auto ISO. I shoot most cameras this way now for wildlife as it gives me more control but still automates exposure to some degree. There are two really weird things about exposure compensation on the X-H2S in manual mode with auto ISO though:
      1. You can't assign it to one of the dials, even though most lenses have an aperture ring (so the aperture control dial is redundant) 🤔 So you have to assign it to a toggle button that overrides the dials (I found myself accidentally toggled into this a lot)
      2. When you do adjust the EC, you have to be correctly exposed. For some utterly bizarre reason the EC element in the UI shows a live exposure reading even when adjusting the setting, but only when you're over or under exposed, and only in manual mode 😵‍💫It's suuuuuper weird, and means you can't apply EC when you're not exposed correctly, which is hilariously pointless.
      As for lens mount play - there's a few different things I've found affect it most. Third-party lenses are sometimes more prone to it due to reverse-engineering the mount, but usually the biggest contributor is the length of the lens acting as a lever on what little play there is. All big lenses I've had have had a bit of play, on Canon EF, Olympus, X mount, and now Z mount (albeit via an adapter currently). Usually it's nothing to worry about, the weird thing on my X-H2S was that it was frequently disconnecting (which _is_ a fault). I can often feel a little play in shorter lenses too but you have to really be trying to find it as the levering effect of the lens isn't enough to overcome the friction of the mount.
      I really hope the reset solves your issue! And yes that settings backup thing is super useful - I dreaded the thought of setting the X-H2S up from scratch again as it was really quite time-consuming 🙈It's so bizarre that it doesn't just export them to the SD card though.

    My computer chokes on 10 bit 4.2.2 at any resolution. The fixes are exponentially more expensive, and as my desktop screen is HD I can't see any advantage without upgrading everything to a professional level. So it's 4k 8 bit 4.2.0 and an easy life for the foreseeable future, even though my Lumix S5 shoots in higher res. I reckon you've made a good shout on the Z9. It has the heft you're looking for with long lenses, as well as weatherproofing, vertical grip and access to some quality lenses via an adapter until Z mount equivalents are forthcoming. Let's face it, if you can afford a Z9 and teles, you can pay for regular trips to an osteopath.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  Год назад +1

      Yeah the difference in system requirements is crazy unless you have the suitable decoders. My machine chokes on 4K 4:2:2 h.265 but breezes through 8K 4:2:2 NRAW. 8 bit 4:2:0 is usually the right choice on the S5 though, and I love the video quality out of the S5 🤩
      Yeah I’m overall pretty hopeful for the Z9! Though my knees are already shot so it might be a poor choice long-term 🙈 The Z primes I picked up are really nice so I’m pretty hopeful for the future lens selection.

    I can fully understand that, don't know what I would do, if my camera was away for a full month for repairs.
    All of this was fully covered by the warranty, though, right? Anyway, I'm hoping that this isn't a common issue with these models, so far I can't find anything about it online, though of course the cameras are still relatively new.

      Yeah fully covered under warranty thankfully, and to be fair I haven’t seen anyone else with the exact same issue as me so it hopefully isn’t a common thing. It could well be a problem with how I use a camera, or my natural ability to break things 🤔
