  • Say what you like about makita!, personally I think there tools are pretty good buuuut I’m selling my 12v cxt sds drill!!! Why you ask!! Well I’ll tell you, it’s to slow when drilling into hard materials like concrete and granite!! I needed a faster drill that can drill easier into hard materials and hopefully be able to handly bigger bits, but I need the drill to be small and light and be able to be used one handed, so iv bought this makita dhr171 brushless lxt 18v sds drill for about £120 body only!!, will it be any good? Well unfortunately you will have to watch the video to find out, also I introduce my new chipping adhaptor for said drill and get this it could be a worlds first!!! #worklife #buildingtrade #makita #tools #goodtools #cordlesstools #diy #plumbing

Hey Jon thanks for replying to my comment the other day about me still using the BHP-451.
It's funny that you called it a really old drill as to me it still feels like the "new stuff" (or it did up until a few months ago). Time flies when you're old.
The 3 speed switch does sometimes stick but if you flick between drill and hammer modes and a bit of brute force it will change.
But it does mean it needs a clean out inside of all the dust, I just clear it all out and clean the slider up and case with some iso alcohol. I was going to put some silicon grease in there but it think it will just gunk up more.
I've babied all my 18v battery kit i bought back then, that drill was the star of the pack though.
If I have a proper job on I still get out the 110v transformer, splitter and leads and use all the old corded stuff I picked up back in the mid 90's to mid 2000's.
It's from the time when you could turn up on site with just hand tools and say "Hey I'm not a tool hire company, you're paying for the magic in the hands"
A lot of guy wouldn't even use their own tools out of principal.
I usually managed to keep the tools unless they were Hilti.
Some of those tools have fitted thousands of full heating systems, bashed dozens of houses and never even had the brushes changed.
They will probably see me out to retirement for installing, I love them but they are only worth carboot money.
That 40v HR1010 I bought is a nice little bit of luxury kit for drilling a few pipe clips or hanging a room stat with the vac, but I doubt it would last much more than a year or two of heavy installs, drilling or chiselling out holes upside down under floor boards.
For that I'll still bring out the trusty old HR-2450 from 2002.
    Cheers for the videos

The chipper works great. You need another Makita that can do sausages, then you've got a proper meal!

Milwaukee is releasing the new m12 rotary hammer in november, it even has a chisel function

Love it, and bonus input from Mrs Random is the cherry on top! Perhaps the drills will exhibit differing performance under increased load on harder material? I like the idea of squeezing out an extra mode with the modified chisel bit, quite satisfyingly sketchy demo that. 😄 Hopefully version 2 can somehow manage support for the shank while disabling rotary action, before all the bouncing around inside eventually knackers up the chuck. If it can't be done by tooling the shank and / or modding the drill mechanism, how about an external centering frame added to the auxiliary handle?
