French Foreign Legion, the real life Suicide Squad. Perhaps they deserve a video of how they came to be.
many of them are men who came from broken homes or former lives of crime, and the legion gives them a place and brotherhood to finally belong to. aka hard motherfuckers.
But he did ...sum it up from 1:17 to 1:54 (including lore).

@Dani Boi france doesnt engage in any major conflicts lately, so they are largely relegated to security duties in countries that request it, mainly in africa. their past is still pretty impressive.

For them, Camarón is their Thermopylae, where they did their duty against overwhelming odds

pls know of battle of sarhagiri , in which 12 defended against 1000 of troops , that is some unreal thing for a last stand tooo ,
The history guy does a great video on Saragarhi
Did you miss-speak at 4:05? You said "Spain and the United States withdrew" but surely that should have been "Spain and the United Kingdom"?
as Puebla City resident I did know about this battle, is part of the lore after the 5 de Mayo battle and how the french invasion went on.
excellent video! nice to see Mexican history here 😍 thank you Simon and TIFO team
Just like at the Alamo. The Mexican strategy seems to be to outnumber the enemy by 100 to 1, absorb all of the enemies bullets with their bodies, then swarm them... Very effective if you have the manpower.
They have been historically horrible against fortified forts. This goes all the way back to the time when the a couple Spanish kidnaped the Aztec king and held him hostage In a room surrounded by millions of locals (this eventually led to his death and turning point for the Spanish) to the battle of camarone. One could probably apply this same strategy and take over that country today if one wanted to
I read and account of a Canadian unit in WWII that was defending a hill in France. I wish I could remember the name of the battle and the name of the unit. Many of the Canadians at that time came from rural areas and were extremely tough. They repulsed numerous attacks by the Germans. At one point they ran out of ammunition and resorted to throwing rocks at their enemy. I believe they successfully defended the hill.
Sounds like Vimy Hill. There's a memorial there, and the place is called "Canadian Mount" to this day. The territory was also gifted to Canada as a gesture of thanks.
It's also still riddled with unexploded ordinance. Visitors have strict paths to take when visiting the remaining trenches and such (preserved in concrete). My grandfather took me there a couple of times, and my father worked on an archeological dig nearby, had to have the bomb squad on call at all times.
Hello Simon, If you are looking for another topic of glorious last stands; may I suggest the Gloucester Regiment and the Battle of Imjin in Korea. Truly gobsmacking! I have the privilege of knowing a man that survived the battle, was captured and escaped from North Korea. Truly larger than legend!
Soaked to the bone, unable to get dry, continue moving......... I felt their pain. In 1985, our battalion was moved to undertake an exercise, mid winter, in the cloud line, constantly wet, move and fight our way over the Great Dividing Range toward the East coast. Non combatant casualty rate was enormous. Later, we were informed the purpose of our misery was to test the effectiveness of material and equipment for such environments. For at least ten years my feet itched from the trench foot I developed. Had the stinking politicians and f/w Officers simply asked us, we could have pointed out whatever shortcomings in our equipment. But no, data needed to be produced. Seems the more the world changes, the more it stays the same. FYI. Infantry soldiers are the toughest M/F to ever have guts shovelled into them. Whatever Nation they serve.
Speaking of last stands... a video on the Maryland 400 and the battle of Brooklyn would be phenomenal. It’s distressingly unknown history.
6:16. They were attacked before morning coffee? I'm pretty sure that's now against the Geneva Convention.
No wonder they were mad...
Nice video, but a lot of people into military history, especially fans of Légion étrangère, are familiar with this as carrying Captain Danjou’s wooden hand is considered the greatest honor to bestow upon a Legionnaire on Camerone Day events
I have to say. I love this channel. Always something to learn. Keep it up dood!
What a story !!!! I've never heard of this. Bravo my good man !!!! Bravo 👏.
Captain Danjou's wooden hand is probably THE most sacred relic in the Legion.
Btw...10:03, it's not "saver," it's "sabre," as in a cavalry sabre.
Cinco de Mayo became a regular yearly holiday in California in the 1860's ... In Mexico it is only nominally a national holiday .... it is more like the American Superbowl. Today I found out needs to hire a historian/anthropologist. I will be cheap. You can pay me mostly in T-shirts of Simon and Magic Spoon cereal ... hahahahahaha ... but seriously you can afford me.

To this day every May 5th the USA and Mexico celebrate making the French retreat. Not sure it's really a noteworthy event but it gives us an excuse to eat tacos and drink beer on a weekday
American here. We do ? All I remember for May 5th is the battle of midway and I can't remember if it's the 5th or 6th of May that the last stand of the Swiss guard took place in 1527 on the steps of St. Benedicts cathedral
@@forthencholordofadmirals2763 Battle of Midway was June 4th-7th, not May 5th
Well is it really that much of an accomplishment though? Like who hasn’t beaten the French?
@@jmill1334 ah my bad I was thinking of The Battle of Coral Sea
I say it's noteworthy the strong French army lost to poorly trained, drafted men and even some Mexicans just had machetes also the Mexicans were using weapons from 1720s in the 1860s
this is a great story of soldiers and honor. it would be a badass movie hugely outnumbered to the last bullet
I'm all for it, this story and the one of leo major are long overdue to have a movie made for their lagacy
My uncle Karl joined the Legion shortly after ww2 (he was German) .His unit was sent to French Indo China and was sent to " Dien Bin Phou " . He was involved in the heavy fighting and taken prisoner at the surrender. Later his unit was prisoner swapped , he came home to Germany with pictures of Vietnam .
Hey Simon you should really do a video about how military grade is a misconception about being top of the line, when it actuality it's the toughest thing they can buy for the cheapest, ALLEGEDLY!
@@TheRatsintheWalls ah! right before I started blazing.
I can only prey that I would have the courage & conviction to stand so resilient in the face of such overwhelming opposition & sure peril. They had the hearts of true warriors.
We have over 2 million Prisoners in the US and overseas Wars that never seem to end. WE NEED THIS PROGRAM.
This may not be accurate, but I read somewhere that the battle of Camerone had the most accurate recorded shooting ever.
This is referring to the number of shots fired vs. number of wounds on the opposite side. The load-out of the French company is well documented - number of rifles, number of shots carried by everyone, etc. And the number of wounded and dead from the Mexican side is also documented.
I tried to find the information, but I couldn't. All I got is that there were 3800 shots fired by the French (they used every last shot) for a number of 300 dead and 500 wounded Mexicans (these casualties numbers are most certainly not exact, while the shots fired are) .
This marks my 4th new video from Simon I watched today... awaiting a new Bussines Blaze... OGBB, BLAZE ON BOI!
I run a miniatures wargame of the last stand at Camerone. I make it clear to the French players “you know how this is going to end, right?”
"Yep, we will die and become immortal"
Mexicans: "You are outnumbered and we've captured 16 of your men!"
French: "You shall not pass!"
Mexicans: "We've killed your commander now surrender!"
French: "Tis' but a scratch!"
Mexicans: "We've cut your fighting forces in half!"
French: "No you haven't!"
Mexicans: "There's only a dozen of you left surrender!"
French: "Come at us then! Eh?!"
Mexicans: "Only five of remain and you don't even have bullets left! Surrender now!"
French: "Fine!"
Mexicans: "You've fought bravely, now-"
French: "We'll consider it a draw!"
i get the joke, & it's good, but the Mexican Commander spared the remaining five so they could take their Commander back to bury with full honours.
I am something of a vault of uncommon knowledge, but on odd things...and this is why I love this Simon-person’s posts, with whatever channel.
the fact the most obscure battle has one of the coolest and most well preserved artifacts is amazing! that wooden hand is the stuff of legend lmao
What is a “Mexican Last Stand?” I realize this happened in Mexico, but did Simon mean “Mexican Stand-Off?” (And yes, I realize this wasn’t a Mexican Stand-off.)

As I saw the hand I knew exactly what the video was about...and I bet many more people!!
Not as awesome as the last stand of the Swiss Guard protecting the Holy See in the 15th Century.
A lot of people commenting about 5 de Mayo being more popular in the US than in México - yes, when you're expats you tend to cherish your nationality or roots more. It's not really odd.
not about being an expat at all, it's about the importance of the foe defeated to the U.S.

I like how gentlemanly 19th century warfare was. They treated it like Sunday chess. Its fun to learn about if you ignore the countless horrible deaths brought by war.
What I love is the repeated attempts by the numerically superior force to seek surrender instead of annihilation of the invading force.
That doesn't happen anymore.
Well, It did during the Battle of The Bulge, with the similar reply of "Nuts"
Similar results, the defenders held out long enuff and survived.
Then overran the enemy.
