  • We traveled to the Japanese Alps, a 6 hour drive from Tokyo to Toyama-ken. You can also visit the world-famous 40 Foot High Snow Corridor via the closer Omachi, Nagano Route (3 hours from Tokyo).
Unfortunately you cannot drive your own car through the Alpine Route, but must take highly sought after Cable-Car and Bus tickets (1 hour journey, ¥4,000 one-way). Tickets can be reserved online but sell out very quickly, we risked buying day-of tickets when we arrived at the Tateyama Station and had no problems at 0845 on a Friday morning on 21 April 2023 (Peak Season), I think as long as you arrive around 0800 even on a Saturday morning you should be fine.
The next day we visited the city of Kanazawa, explored their fish-market and historic districts, and the Castle and Gardens.
The following day on our drive home, we passed through Nagano, and stopped at the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park (¥800/adult, ¥400/child over 5). Snow had melted and it was too warm to see the monkeys enjoying a hot bath, but it was still an awesome unique experience I recommend stopping for.
