- Pneumatic tubes, also known as pneumatic dispatch systems or simply "pneumatic tubes," are a network of tubes used for transporting physical objects, documents, or small packages through pressurized air or a partial vacuum. In the case of New York City (NYC), pneumatic tubes were historically used for various purposes, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In NYC, pneumatic tube systems were primarily employed for the rapid delivery of mail, messages, and small packages within office buildings, businesses, or even between different parts of the city. These systems consisted of a network of interconnected tubes that spanned across the buildings, often connecting various departments or floors.
The operation of pneumatic tube systems involved placing the item to be transported into a cylindrical container or carrier. This carrier was then inserted into the tube, and the pressure difference or vacuum created within the system propelled it through the network to its destination. At the receiving end, the carrier would be removed from the tube, and the contents would be retrieved.
Pneumatic tube systems were widely used in the early 20th century and provided a faster alternative to manual delivery methods. They were especially prevalent in large cities like NYC, where the need for efficient communication and transportation systems was high. However, as technological advancements occurred and alternative methods such as telephones, fax machines, and email became prevalent, the use of pneumatic tube systems diminished.
Today, pneumatic tube systems are not as common in NYC or in most other cities, with the exception of specific industries like healthcare or logistics. However, you may still find remnants of these systems in older buildings or museums, serving as a reminder of their once widespread use.

they just went ahead and yeeeted a cat through a vacuum tube under NYC
...what a time
Ironically because of the internet these tubes wouldn’t be overwhelmed by mail now. Would be much cheaper than paying the labor now.
Alright, this video alone convinced me to subscribe. This is truly the golden age of content, there are so many little gems scattered across the internet and you sir are one of them.
Thanks for the kind words. Just uploaded a new vid about Graffiti Pier. Take a look!
Dang this is super cool.
Heey fancy seeing you here
Is this the internet before the internet?
hey Zack how are you and camry
Didn't expect to see you here
woah
I vaguely remember seeing these as a child in the UK. I think they were sometimes used to transport money around.
My mom says that at the hospital she works at they ship blood and medicine around using pneumatic tubes, and for the most part it works, but sometimes the vials will get damaged and clog the system. But they're still in use today!
Drive-thru banks used to have tubes. Not sure when or if it ever stopped, but none of the banks I've been to since the 1980s have had tubes for depositing/withdrawing.
@@fartkerson All the banks here in Ohio have them. I can't think of a single bank I've used that doesn't have them for drive thru services.
@@lindab7383 wow that’s so strange. I haven’t seen one on the west coast since the 1980s.
Main reason is not money but lobbying from car company to selling a car to post office.
Interesting topic, and I love the depth of research!
Thanks, this was a very interesting video. If you'd get a better mic, I think your channel can really blow up
I saw one image of the pneumatic tubes elsewhere and wanted to know more, your video gave me everything I wanted to know and then some.
Much appreciated!
Very interesting vidoes - keep up the good work, dude! Your video editing is getting better and better!
Thanks mate!
Really appreciate these informative vids!!
glad to see you are still making content James.
Sounds like you know me
I honestly didnt know this was a thing until now, thanks for the little history trip
Thank you for the heart
This channel is criminality undersubscribed. Keep up the good work!
So awesome! This gives me some great Urban exploration vibes!
Great video, thanks for making this.
Great video and very informative! Keep it up
I love you for doing something like this, my friend! You actually see this mail system in action in the 1994 film The Shadow.
Greetings from Denmark and Sweden!
Very interesting , I've learned something today . Thank you for sharing
Great video! 👍
Could you imagine if somebody took a dump in that thing ? I'm sure it would circulate through the entire system. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
interesting bit of history. thanks for making a video about it!
Excellent video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Pretty fascinating stuff...great research.
Thank you for that. your thorough that's what I like to see
Thanks for such a cool video; I really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Much love, Much respect!
I am always researching odds and ends of little or unknown history and this morning I decided to research pneumatic tubes as a coworker wondered aloud the other day about how they worked. Then I find this channel and am hooked. I'm subscribing to your channel. P.S. Either the speakers are going on the fritz or a better microphone is needed...?
God can you imagine, yeah mail me a fresh roast beef sandwich? Just send it to the tube I don’t want to leave
Really interesting. I learned something new. What cool system.
That would be pronounced: "PRAHG".
Yea..please get a manager
haha yeah that really bothered me too
@@Dontbelikedad it's not "tomato" or "tomahto"...There's only one way to say it.
And "duh-PEW." Not "DEP-yew."
I've been informed. I'll say it correctly next time
Gracias por la explicación.
finally a video where im not being yelled at from the beginning to like share and sub....so much nicer to watch
that was cool exept for the pullout at the end where you dident say ware,,, anyhow peace
Nicely done. Subbed.
Cool story
Series of tubes...
Fascinating
Great content
Very interesting!
Well done
Tuber Eats!
Quality content
Is it economically feasible today?
Good video! I especially liked the specification portion. I do think you need a better outside mic though.
Very informative and well produced video! My only interaction with that type of messaging was with drive-thru banking.
Yes! I remember drive-thru banks having tubes, as well!
@@fartkerson they still do
@@sammie7641 How odd. Where I live we only have drive through ATMs. It's been decades since I've seen a bank with pneumatic tubes. If it wasn't replaced with an ATM, it was shut down and you have to park and wait in line. By the time I was old enough to get a job and deposit my checks they've been gone. My only memory of these tubes is from when I was a child.
That poor cat
Interesting
Nice video, but tune down your mic, you have some annoying distortion because the gain is too high...
Interesting!
Gives me Control: the Foundation vibes....
Interesting Video. A few tips: the white text on the black background is too fine to see clearly - use a thicker font like Arial. Also Prague is pronounced with a short A, not a long A.
No, it's pronounced with the "aw" sound.
So futuristic
and yet this is from 100 years ago. Kind of weird right ?
Still the coolest thing ever.
Audio seems to be all over the place with headphones on. Very distracting.
Blacklist brought me here ;D
Water main had screen straining receiving station so package send in water flow to station open receiving into strainer and water keep on going but each pipe is 16 in diameter so money , money banking , and city secret message use in tube of 5 in by 8 in
Wow. That cat part is pretty fucked up.
Where is the metric units? Pneumatic tube system more expensive than delivery trucks? I doubt that.
"The person... were"?
So cool - apart from mailing moggies, I don't like that
Today it would be much more efficient with practically 0 maintenance using carbon fiber tubes
Haha, if you're going to use a black-and-white video it seems like it would make sense to find some film transfer that's period-correct, or at least a photo, instead of just grayscaling modern-day video.
poor kitty!
Pneumatic Nail Lube
Why _not_ tell us where it is?
Get the CityXcape app
Just tell us where the tubes are!!!!!
All I got from this was, in america a bible, the constitution and a flag will get you a newspaper and some flowers.
1000th like
I can't believe they sent a cat in it! haha
animal ethics wasnt big back then. People did all sorts of crazy things.
great video, next time at the very least equalize your audio
Well done video... You got a new subscriber :)
P-raig?
Prog...lol
The pneumatic mail system was a system of tubes
Brilliant observation
"Prague"
What about it, and why the quotes? So you can say one place that he said, too. OK, and...?
@@HelloKittyFanManThe narrator mispronounced "Prague" like "pragmatic." The correct pronunciation is "prah-g "
No he didn't, @@mainantagonist. He pronounced it with only one syllable; not like "prag (short) * MA (short) * tik (short)." He said the one syllable sound, "prag (long)" (with the sound that "pray" makes). Also no, what you said as "correct" is not "prah * g." It's _also_ just one syllable: "prahg." Besides, your reply doesn't answer my question of what ComePoop said, so we'll just wait to see what she or he posts as that reply.
Cost analysis... even if the volume increased to 200,000 letter per day it would cost 13 cents per letter just to lease the tube system today. Not worth the cost.
Who is here from reddit
Oh no! Two of my shotguns are missing and I can't find my cats. I think this video made them go postal. They've always been pretty wobbly, spouting off how "an injury to one is an injury to all" and other similar nonsense.
Are you insane or am I just missing a joke?
@@the_egg_ They shot a cat through the machine so I pretended that I had cats and shotguns and that the cats were radical, anarchist, union members outraged by the working conditions of a fellow cat. The phrase I used was directly from the Industrial Workers of the World, a prominent union at the beginning of the 20th century, who use to be referred to as "wobbly pops." Furthermore, an angry black cat was an IWW symbol. Also, I'm insane.
Nah, somebody wanted to kill it so they killed it. Had the rent not been such an extortion scheme, they could have continued using it just fine for express mail. The lady at the post office would just ask you "snail or tube?" and they could have kept it. Also they could have made it into a local attraction. Here in Prague the system still exists, it was being used until it was damaged during the 2002 flood and currently it is waiting to be restored.
it just plain sucked.....it couldnt cope with the pressure.
HAWWW!
🙀😿😾
prage....
Huhh?
Interesting stuff.
Plz don't ever use thin light grey text on a black background ever again.
It isn’t bad and matches the video
Got it!
Telephones is why they stopped using it.
