My grandmother taught me if I had an insect on my plants that I could take them out of their pots remove all the soil. Wash them with dish soap then rinser them. Wash and scrub their pots really well. Then repot them. I started doing this when I couldn't afford insecticides. And it really works.
Sharon Howle, that's an old time remedy back where I grew up in VA, too! There's another lady on RUclips who does that to nearly every new plant that she takes home. I hadn't thought of it in many years until she and now you mentioned doing it! Thanks for the memory & tip! 🌾💜
It's been my experience that ferns like epsom salt. I use about a tablespoon per gallon of water when watering mine. The magnesium really helps them to stay green. This also works on hostas.
I think because she explains so well and they look so good it gives you confidence lol I had the same thoughts and this is where they "stemmed from" for me! Pun intended 😉
Thats awesome! I've always loved plants and animals since as long as I can remember. They give off positive energy, tgats probably why you love them so much.
Remarkably impressive; you captured all areas of taking care of ferns!!! Unrivaled by any video I've seen. You have an enviable ability to get right to the points in a courteous, kind, and pleasant manner!! Thank You
Hi, Laura. I keep a pot with an asparagus fern, a small maidenhair fern and a bird's nest fern. I potted them in a terra cotta pot, then placed that in a larger plastic pot (ceramic would have been too heavy as I have it hanging). I filled the space between the pots with preserved moss, and put 2 ceramic plant watering spikes in the space between the pots, and one in the middle. The 3 capillary tubes go into a nearby 1-quart Mason jar which I fill about every 2 weeks. The moss stays moist all the time, as does the soil, but never wet. I never water the pot, and they have grown beautifully through the hot summer and cooler fall and winter. I use the same watering stakes in my big Boston fern, also hanging. I created a wire cage for the Mason jar and attached it to the bottom of the macrame hanger. The fern currently has 9 fronds growing, and it's mid-February! Thanks for tip about grooming - I've been pulling off the occasional brown leaves but the partially bare branches aren't so attractive. Hope to see you at the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival on Wednesday.
I just wanted to thank you again for your videos! I work in the plant section in Bunnings Australia (a big home improvement type store) and I always refer people to your videos for more information! You have taught me so much and I'm so grateful!
Hi Laura! Keep in mind that some of these houseplant ferns do great outside as well depending on where you live. I happen to live near the California/Oregon border on the coast where it constantly rains and my ferns were doing terrible inside. I put my rabbits foot, mother fern, and birds nest fern outside and they are doing amazing!
I would have loved to have had you mention care and repotting of the staghorn fern that I noticed sitting in the foreground. Love watching your videos.
I am so glad that you mentioned their nontoxic. I have a bunch of Foxtail ferns in my house and I had seen a video on RUclips telling me to wear gloves and that they’re toxic and now I feel better.
Morning Sweet Laura. I entered I over an asperaqus Fern since I have my hummidifer going all the time. it grew an is quite beautiful. I only watered it same as my other house plants, love it.
Oh man, so jealous that you have so many windows and space by then to keep all this beautiful plants. On the other hand, it might be a blessing because mom knows no limit when it comes to plants 😄😉 Great info as always, and then the #1 ......Benjamin 😍🌞 Thanks Laura, love seeing your little love, hugs to the 3 of you.🌱💜🌱
Hi Laura, update on my Maidenhair Fern: it's been doing great except for one week a few weeks ago where the weather was disgustingly humid, I completely forgot to open up and air out my indoor greenhouse and, so I found five mushrooms growing on the top of my Fern's soil lol !! I was able to get rid of them by changing the soil and it's doing great again!!💕🥰🙏🏼 Hi Laura came back because I'm repotting my Maidenhair Fern and wanted to do it right!! Unfortunately, my Rabbit's foot fern died but my Maidenhair is doing beautifully!! I keep mine in an indoor, plastic covered greenhouse and I mist it once a day!! I water it every 5 days!! And I open the flap every day for about an hour or two, and use a fan to air out the greenhouses to avoid fungus gnats!! I absolutely LOVE all ferns!!❤️❤️❤️
I have had success using a hydro spike for my boston fern.😊 I also mist the plant daily. I didn't know there was a "Chrissy Fern" though! My family call me Chrissy and I definitely want one now!😁💚 I enjoy these videos...great content, and Benjamin is a joy to see!😊
i was at our local nursery/seeds company at the beginning of April 2019 - not long after watching this video and a couple other fern related video by Garden Answer - and they happened to have some selections of fern... so i bought 3 babies in different varieties (maidenhair, asparagus, and staghorn, i think) and tested them out in - for the lack of better description - a fidget spinner shaped container that houses all three plantlets together. It's a pretty cool looking pot with all the different shades, shapes and textures of the leaves! :) - The ferns live on my desk in the office with lots indirect sunlight (large west facing windows and lots white surfaces the light could bounce off. - I putted a layer of pea gravel in the outer decorative pot and kept them wet like Laura did here - only required to top off the water every other day (for this particular set up and environment). - Also watered them between 5-6 day intervals (it has only just been three weeks since i got them), again like Laura said here, whenever they feels kinda "less wet" or individual pots became lighter in weight. - I didn't mist them for the two weeks cuz I couldn't find a good sprayer that's not plastic thru and thru - selfish, i know. The day i gave up looking in local stores and brought one on Amazon, i walked into a random hardware store and found them standing on the shelf at half the price i paid for online... wait, i had a point... So the first two weeks without misting they seems to be doing just fine. The moisture coming from the bottom definitely helped, but I've been misting them this week, about once or twice a day, and they look happy too. - Because almost everyone at our office has gotten a few plants on our desks, from snake plants, ribbon plants, Chinese money plants, purple (or maroon) shamrock, jade plants, pathos, to zz plants, just to name a few i could recognize and call out their names, there are definitely fungus gnats in and around. For those of you who may not know what I'm talking about, it's a tiny little insects that likes to fly around take a deep dive at your coffee or soup... It's not a huge issue (yet) and we do have those yellow stickies here and there to catch them, so i haven't gotten to a point where i need to worry about repotting anything or getting some insecticides to hold the fort - can't say that about the plants at my house... I stopped by the nursery again today and my fern definitely putted on more growth than their siblings sitting under the store grow lights - given that the nursery has way more things to attend to and i have 3+5 (other existing plants on my desk), i must have done something right by following those rules, hence long post sharing it here. Long explanation, short (?) conclusion: *Laura and Aaron,* and any family members/friends that helps you to do what you do, thank you!! I really do appreciate what you guys do everyday and that affects my life on so many levels. I love my tenny tiny green oasis at work and my growing search for Eden at home. Bless you for always being so smiley, funny, adventurous, brave, artistic, and positive - you pass on much more than just knowledge and experience of greeneries. All my love.
Thank you, l just bought a Boston Fern for the first time a few weeks ago. Very helpful video. l live in Scotland and l only give it couple hours a day near a window and return it back to a shady corner in the hallway that doesn't get much natural sunlight. Some leaves have started to brown, l think that was because l left it close to a window during the day in the first week. Will see how 2 hours a day natural sunlight near a window makes a difference. The pot soil is damp.
I grow lots of ferns where I live in Australia, many of the ferns seen in this video are native to areas close by me. Ferns are very misunderstood as house plants, they honestly can take quite a lot of direct sun (2-3 hours) as long as they aren’t ever allowed to dry out. You really want to give them as much bright light as possible, and keep big saucers under them filled with water (it’s pretty hard to get fern roots to rot). Birds nests are definitely the most hardy variety, and I wonder what Laura plans to do with hers once they reach the 2+ meter width of maturity like the ones in my garden. I’d love to see a video on some American ferns in your garden, although I haven’t spotted any in past videos. Many of the deciduous ferns native to the us and Europe don’t grow as well in Australia, so I’d love to learn more about them.
This is my first video of you and you got yourself a new subscriber I've been keeping plants since I was 14 thanks to mama and papa they are from Michuacan Mexico they thought me all I know of plant care I'm 27 now and have over 100 plants I love it so much and I love seeing others in this loveable hobby ❤❤
Thank you So smart about the misting I mist my plants twice a day if it is really warm outside or inside; so I was glad to hear you say that because I’m not using a humidifier either lol
Love this video! It is really hard to find good fern care videos and I really enjoyed this one. Especially curious about Heart Leaf fern care if you any specific tips.
I live in Indiana, and the humidity is always high here. It does get lower in the winter, but never below 40%. The winter humidity is usually between 40% to 60%. The humidity in the summer is between 60% to 90%. It is miserable in the summer, so sticky! Anyways, my Ferns don't need as much misting as you give them. I try to mist them once or twice per week. I know the humidity can be lower indoors, but still is relatively high since it is over 40% outdoors all the time. They are thriving! Thanks for the video, extremely informative! 😁🌿
I had a beautiful Boston fern that was out all summer. During the winter indoors it turned brown, crisp, and ended up dropping all of its leaves. I think I see what I did wrong now. Not enough light, water, or humidity. Thank you! Love seeing Benjamin in the videos!
Also, my climate isn’t dry but in the winter it gets dry in the house from using the heater. I found really cool tiny humidifiers that you put a bottle of Poland Springs in it and it turns it into a humidifier that I keep around my plants.
I loved when you said: "Every time I killed one I learn a little bit more..." lol. Is amazing the honesty and naturallity you put into your videos and I thank you for that. No poses or pretending to know it all. I trust your advise and experiences>. Hugs from Calgary AB. Canada
Hi Laura, this video could not have come at a better time for me. I just started growing plants indoors for air quality and am in love with ferns so I have bought a few. My maiden hair is not happy but I know they’re little divas. The thing I wanted to ask is most of these ferns are growing in what appears to be peat, or something similar. When I repot them should I try to get most of the original substrate off the roots before I plant into organic potting mix?
I had two Boston ferns a few years ago on the south side on our back steps they got sun in late after noon direct I wet then down alote with the hose they were from Wal-Mart in hanging baskets I took then out and repoted them in garden planters they were gorgeous and then in the fall the got a slight frost and turned bronze not dead. I really enjoyed them till winter s cold with the pumpkins beside them wish I could send you the picture I took
I have kept all my succulents alive now for 2 years, I think I can upgrade now to something requiring a little more attention and to make my house feel little more homey. Cannot wait to try some ferns!
Hi I’m from NZ and started watching your videos about succulents which are so awesome. I have subscribed and now going through ALL your videos because you are the best to watch and learn from. My grandparents loved plants, it skipped a generation to me! Thank you for all the great tips and advice, my fave channel for sure!
I love boston ferns, but always kill them, I too learn everytime I kill a plant and will try to grow one again, I always learn so much from all your videos and really enjoy all of the tips and tricks. Thank you so much and see you in your next video, Bye for now.
I have a Boston type fern, I have it in a shady bright area outside, temperature is about 50-70 it is having a rough time. Dieing leaves I remove. It's a very small fern. Was purchased as a gift from a grocery store, I repotted in a pretty big pot. The plant is about 6 inches tall and I have it in a 2 gallon pot about.
my tiny little mahogany fern is really dry and kind of dying so I'm gonna try to do all of your tips to bring it back to life! As far as I've noticed humidity is a big deal (though living in rainy London you'd think it won't be an issue) so I'll definitely go out and fetch a mister like yours!
Thank you for another great video! I’m from Queensland Australia, in an area with very high humidity. I have found with my birds nest fern that I have to wait for it to dry out more than any of my other tropical plants before I water it. I wait for the plant to go a grey-green colour between watering, and then it’s back to bright green a few hours after watering. The reason I let it dry out that far between watering is that I was experiencing rot in the crown of the plant and it wasn’t putting on any new growth. When it was dryer, it puts on new growth like crazy. I love your channel, thank you for doing what you do 😁
Great, informative video as always! I do not have any ferns at this time but now plan to try them! Benjamin is always fun to see in the videos.....Thanks so much Laura
The pebble idea is brilliant. I have a kangaroo fern that just loves water and damp, between the pebbles and misting I think it might start to be happy again.
I have a blue star fern and I just give it maybe a 30 second shower every day or so! I end up hardly ever actually watering because it replicates that rainforest climate, like he’s getting rained on everyday ☺️
I have found that my ferns (silver lady & maidenhair) were bronzing/drying out despite all conditions being appropriate. Turns out it was my local tap water- switched them to distilled only and now they are thriving and doing better than ever. Something to consider when faced with similar issues :)
I purchased my first fern a little over a month ago, and it's doing well (not the norm for me - haha), and now I’m excited about picking up a few more ferns so that I have a small collection. Thanks for the informative and encouraging videos!
Great coffee with Laura video! I really enjoyed this video and love ferns especially the maiden hair and asparagus fern. I also love rabbits foot fern and need to get a new one for the classroom as the children love this plant. You always offer such great information and I am always happy to hear you say things like, " this may not work for you or in your area." I have a problem with people who say to absolutely plant a certain way or only do this and your plant will look great. You give general advice and note what has worked for you and others you know and encourage us to try things for ourselves and I thank you for that! Love seeing Benjamin as well!!!!
Carol Beatty I used to be a preschool teacher and my kids loved learning about carnivorous plants. They are pretty easy to come by either in garden stores or online. Great learning opportunity! Look up pitcher plants and Venus fly traps.
I love your videos!!! Could you do one on how to repot (split and propagate) a rabbit foot fern? I love mine, but am not sure how to put the rhizome into the dirt for an optimal looking final plant! Thanks so much!
Thanks for this video, I only wish I had more room for plants in my small single-wide. I have 3 plants, one is a Christmas Cactus, one a pony tail palm (tiny) and the other is a Peace Lily. Years past I had upwards to 30 different house plants and I love them. Love of plants grew into a full blown nursery. Can't wait to get outside and play! Loved seeing Benjamin at the end!
Hi Laura Realy appreciated your video on house plants n ferns. You cleared up some misconceptions on lighting . You have a beautiful family . Happy gardening
I have a bunch of boston growing out of my window together with a species I have been searching the internet and still haven't found. There's also a species of staghorns slowly crawling on my mossy cinderblock fence. I pot a few of them to bring indoors. They're quite unassuming but elegant imho.
Thank you Laura! Maidenhair fern is my favorite and I have killed lots!!! LOL! I think I will give it another shot after this video. Thank you for sharing Benjamin we us. He's so adorable!
I bought a beautiful Boston fern and didn’t know about not placing them in direct sun. I placed it on my front porch so it can beautify that space. I have no roof at the porch and it faces south so all that Georgia summer sun was wreaking havoc on my poor fern. Now, I’m trying to nurture it back to a healthy condition though it looks dead. I checked the roots and I was happy to see there are new roots. I’d just like to know how to better nurture it so it can grow back to its beautiful self.
Now that you mentioned it, my fern in the bathroom does seem the happiest! Lol I love maiden hair ferns but cannot keep them alive in my house. I do have quite a few varieties of hardy ferns in my woodland garden, including a hardy Himalayan Maidenhair fern that just thrives and is the most beautiful ground cover.
You just read my mind! I wanted to look how to take care of ferns. I love them, but found ferns to be not an easy plant. Struggling a lot. Hope that your tips will help us :) ferns and me
I wish I had more space up high to put plant. My cats are crazy and into everything! I am hoping to bump into you guys at the NW Flower and Garden Show tomorrow in Seattle. 😃
Love this one too.. I can’t keep a fern they always dye on me. There are one of my favorite plants too. Thank you Laura the tips I hope will help me next time I get one. 🤗🌷
I totally "missed" the mark when you said you "mist" your plants. I was like, "Dang! How long are all of these garden show trips since you "missed" your plants?" Palm meet face.
I’m not big on houseplants only because I tend to kill them. But I love all of your videos especially the daily routine ones. But most of all I love seeing that sweet Benjamin face. He’s absolutely adorable. Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Thank you so much. I have always been intimidated by ferns. Somehow you don't make them sounds as scary as I thought they were, I think I might try one now. Also thank you for the house plant video. It was wonderful 🤩
Why do I feel like buying every plant you talk about? 😀💚
I think because she explains so well and they look so good it gives you confidence lol I had the same thoughts and this is where they "stemmed from" for me! Pun intended 😉
🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😅
😁😅🥰
I'm 14 and i am obsessed with houseplants, I think I have like 60 something just in my bedroom!

You're the coolest 14yo ever!
Wow
What Responsibility you have..
Good job ♡♡♡
Thats awesome! I've always loved plants and animals since as long as I can remember. They give off positive energy, tgats probably why you love them so much.
I have horrible luck with ferns. I’m Texas zone 8. But you inspire me. I love all those ferns. 💕💕💕
I’m 13 an love you videos! I have one of your shirts too! You inspire me soooo much!
Gardening is so much fun and so rewarding. Nice to know a teenager is excited about it!!! Keep those fingers in soil!!!
I’m 19 and i have about 25 plants and i started my collection this month😀 i love them so much
Reagan same but im 18 and grow it all from seeds
A coffee filter! Who'da thunk? Great tips.
I slit them so they are one layer. Works well!
@@j.m.7056 , thanks. Good tip.
Omg, love the realism
wer'da funk at
What a great tip!
I just bought my first Fern and I’m super excited. It’s just sitting next to me in my car 🤩
Remarkably impressive; you captured all areas of taking care of ferns!!! Unrivaled by any video I've seen. You have an enviable ability to get right to the points in a courteous, kind, and pleasant manner!! Thank You
I’d love for you to do another fern video, where you show how to divide the different types. Ferns are my fav houseplants!

I'm really considering increasing my houseplant game. I saw some pretty plants in Walmart, and this video lets me know I can manage them.
Yes, do it, I started to expand my collection last summer and my house looks like a jungle now, I love it
That coffee filter tip was exactly what I needed. Thanks!

Hi, wow...what a great video. So much detailed information. Thanks for posting. 🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍👏👍👏🌿👍
I JUST bought a rabbit foot fern. Wish you would have covered those types but all great info! Ty for the videos!
I love those planters. They are so beautiful. I learned why my poor fern is not doing well with getting to much sun.
You can get really cute humidifiers if you look in the baby section. I have an owl one
Love the information and how quickly it moves along so one never gets bored. Great job. Beautiful baby boy.
Also, my climate isn’t dry but in the winter it gets dry in the house from using the heater. I found really cool tiny humidifiers that you put a bottle of Poland Springs in it and it turns it into a humidifier that I keep around my plants.
Very informative video. You covered all the bases , got to the point, and very easy to follow
Timely & very helpful. While it’s 23 degrees out (zone 7 NY) I’m enjoying, pampering & increasing my indoor garden.
I plant few of them indoor and in my balcony and I am so exhausted. While you are planting tons of them all season long. You are such an inspiration.
This was the best!!!! Helped me a ton with my Boston Fern that was gifted to me. Ty! 💚
Bought my first fern today. Great tips and advise thank you✨😊
I have kept all my succulents alive now for 2 years, I think I can upgrade now to something requiring a little more attention and to make my house feel little more homey. Cannot wait to try some ferns!
I learned so much from this video...thanks for sharing 🌱
Hi I’m from NZ and started watching your videos about succulents which are so awesome. I have subscribed and now going through ALL your videos because you are the best to watch and learn from. My grandparents loved plants, it skipped a generation to me! Thank you for all the great tips and advice, my fave channel for sure!
I love boston ferns, but always kill them, I too learn everytime I kill a plant and will try to grow one again, I always learn so much from all your videos and really enjoy all of the tips and tricks. Thank you so much and see you in your next video, Bye for now.
The Victoria birds nest fern is my favorite! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I have a bird's nest fern and I put it on a tree branches partnered with Spanish moss! And it looks like a rainforest specimen.😊😊😊, just sharing!
my tiny little mahogany fern is really dry and kind of dying so I'm gonna try to do all of your tips to bring it back to life!
I enjoyed learning how are you repot a plant that doesn't necessarily need it
Great info Laura! So sweet seeing Benjamin. He’s so adorable. 🌿🦋🐝💕💙
I have a blue star fern and I just give it maybe a 30 second shower every day or so! I end up hardly ever actually watering because it replicates that rainforest climate, like he’s getting rained on everyday ☺️
I just picked up a fern and when I googled it said toxic to cats so thank you so much for putting my mind at ease. That was helpful information.
I have found that my ferns (silver lady & maidenhair) were bronzing/drying out despite all conditions being appropriate. Turns out it was my local tap water- switched them to distilled only and now they are thriving and doing better than ever.
Something to consider when faced with similar issues :)
Gosh, I watch this video once again after my fern died again! I think I need a new fern soon to keep practising!
I bought a fern plant its so easy to care for. I move it around the house to spice up the extra small 🙂 space I have. Love your videos 💚
Thanks for the tips! I'm hoping to grow some ferns for my wedding florals. Fingers crossed!
Do you think you could cover rabbits foot fern care? Having some trouble with mine
thankyou laura....this was very useful.loved it.i just bought a tree fern.
Great video thanks so much. I've been intimidated to get ferns but I got some really sweet ones that are supposed to be friendly so I'm going to try!
Great job on ferns. Mine aren't doing so well, unfortunately. I'm not giving up, anyway.😀
I have a thing for ferns. Love them!❤
And i envy your planter collection so much!
I usually hang ferns out on my deck and they do beautifully!
Love your stone pots
great video thanks for all that Information my mom has a Boston fern I well remember to pass that on to her
You just read my mind! I wanted to look how to take care of ferns. I love them, but found ferns to be not an easy plant. Struggling a lot. Hope that your tips will help us :) ferns and me
Always your videos are great and useful, I wish you success
I wish I had more space up high to put plant. My cats are crazy and into everything! I am hoping to bump into you guys at the NW Flower and Garden Show tomorrow in Seattle. 😃
I'm gonna buy ferns now for my indoor care. Thanks Laura
Thank you Laura. I’ve never had much success with ferns but have always loved them. Maybe I’ll try again. 😄
Maidenhairs are the prettiest--but SO tough to keep thriving outside a greenhouse!
I keep mine outside in almost complete shade. They need less water than you think. Good Luck. ✌🏻❤
Apparently, pteris cretica fern, otherwise known as variegated ribbon fern, is toxic. Great video! Loved the coffee filter idea. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I have always been intimidated by ferns. Somehow you don't make them sounds as scary as I thought they were, I think I might try one now. Also thank you for the house plant video. It was wonderful 🤩
