Retired last year at 68. Electric piano for Christmas and found your boogie woogie seris. I think you are fantastic. I have such a long way to go but maybe by the time I reach 90 I will be able to play one. Have nothing but time. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos/music!
+Anthony Fuentes Hi Anthony, you have time to practise, so there's no reason why you can't become a proficient boogie player in a relatively short amount of time! Just get into a rhythm with your practice and you will soon build momentum. Boogie will keep you young! DR K
the greatest results that ive ever had was with the Denelle piano lesson (i found it on google) definately the most incredible system that I have ever followed.
This is a great speed for someone who is learning these right hand chords/notes for the first time. This slow speed is especially helpful for the turn-around portion. Thanks!
Lesson one of the"Boogie Woogie Piano for Dummies" series by Dr K where the essence of great boogie woogie playing is broken down into simple, learnable steps.
+Mary P. Thanks Mary. I discuss this interesting topic of classical vs boogie topic in The Ultimate Guide to Boogie (in Vol 1 of the badass boogie bundle) Cheers DR K
Mary P. I use the Boogie all the time took classical. You can do the left hand almost straight timing. I think he demonstrated it elsewhere but the pattern is basically a c6 cega. You play the cg and ca together. The four chord is based on f6. This style will push hand Independence. There is a walking base boogie shuffle.. c e g a bb a g e c.. that the right hand plays alot off the same notes. Now that boogie sounds like one and a two and a .. I find Brenden to be an excellent teacher . cand g
Cheers! I'm 4 days in right now. I unfortunately have a lot of free time on my hands due to a car accident 4 years ago but only recently found a passion for the piano and more so for boogie woogie, it brings happiness to my soul. Absolutely in love. This helped me tremendously! I've been practicing play the bass with the rift, something just didn't sound right with the rift for me when I would go back and compare on lesson 4. I wasn't hitting that Eb right after the G. Sounds perfect. I'm* determined to master this by the end of this April.
thank you Brendan, these videos are brill and very helpfull, I'm 62 years old and only just got hooked on bookie woogie, you've helped me sooo much, I can fully understand your tuition and these slowed down lessons are the best, lovin'em thanks Tom
Man I'm a Metal guitarist at heart but you're videos introduced me to boogie woogie and inspired me as a musician. I went and bought my first keyboard to learn on and haven't been able to stop!
great news Brendan, I've been working on this boogie woogie for dummies and after many hours of practice practice and more practice I began to get dispondant I just could't get both hands going together , then after a while it started coming together and when it did I want to tell the world,It s the best feeling for a long time, there's still a way to go but i want to give you and the camera person a very big thank you, you've opened up a new avenue in my life, thank you very very much Tom,
Brendan Kavanagh yea, I might just do that, don't expect too much though, as i've explained I'm a newbie and only just scratching the surface, there's alooong way to go yet, so I will post a vid on there, :-)
Wow! My dad played boogie woogie before he had a stroke and never taught me. I've been wanting to learn for a long time. Thank you, this is great, very informative and I am playing yr first lesson.
Same. And I learnt Classical piano & violin as a kid! Now I've gotten too much brain cell "fromage" - aka: jellified, cactusfied, rust. Paranormal, thanks for info about the Google App - is it called "Frame by Frame" Il look it up, as it might help make it easier to see what the heck B K is doing 😂 Attention Deficit Disorder ADD /ADHD gets me easily kefuffled & frustrated & old age. heck, I'm tired after thinking about writing this, let alone learn boogiewoogie! Truth be known, I actually like Classical music better 😂 what am I doing here? 😎😎😎
Love Piano Boogie Woogie. Have an old upright Piano gathering dust (my mother in laws) Was going to get rid of. Your lessons are very inspirational. Thank you Will give it a go
Hallo Brendan, i´m watching your boogie woogie and roch´n roll tutorials for month now and want to give you a BIG BIG THAAAAAAAAAAANKYOU for this. You are an amazing player and with your tutorials i discovered the boogie woogie now. I´m 48 Years of age and i play piano since i´m 10 Years, i´m an full time piano teacher and over the years i was not able to check out the boogie woogie piano.... and now i got it Yeaaaa . And for all who say your slow-motion is still to fast for them, go and do more exercises on your piano... :-) :-)
You should be able to play a variety of left hand boogie riffs, don't just get stuck on one because you've practised it so much. It sounds you need to practise several different boogie left hands - don't obsess on one. See lessons 1-3 of How To Play Amazing Boogie Woogie Piano on this channel. BK
This is great. My grandad was an excellent boogie sophie player and I want to follow in his footsteps. I've been playing guitar for 15 years now. Since I was 5. I wanted to play boogie on piano and for my birthday i got my first keyboard. Great series so far!
Thanks a lot Dr. K, i faced the Same problems in the first serie as it was to fast to catch Some tricks, thisone is much much beter. Thanks a lot. I admire you not only as a great pianist but also as a real gentleman to share your knowledge and skills!! World would be much better if everybody could do this!
I loved Hammy Howell's playing and I adored Darts - bought all their albums from around 35 years ago.I can't believe you were taught by such a great pianist. So entertaining and such a sad end.Thank you for sharing
I've been working on this for a week or two. Despite shaky beginnings, I can sense it starting to come together to form recognisable phrases. Very exciting. I expect you remember this phase yourself, from back in the day! Thanks Dr K.
I'm a big fan of Boogie Woogie piano playing! Love your videos sir, I have always wanted to learn how to play Boogie Woolies, your videos are a excellent teaching tool! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I think this is great! I'm new to piano and boogie woogie is my favorite style so slowing down riffs for me is extremely useful as I haven't been playing long and I find it difficult to keep up with lessons that are to fast so thank you very much for slowing this down. This is excellent and I hope you continue these as they are very helpful.
Hi Bren. the slowmo is spot on for the likes of me, and probably many like myself that need to see the individual notes notes being played to enable us to copy so please let this be the first of many.Oh yes good clear camera work aswell. Really great.
The best approach is to get the B.A.B.W.B. Study it and learn it then use these videos more for polishing your tempo and sound dynamic, ie..accent on the back beats perhaps. The bundle scores in hand you can chop it up into smaller learnable pieces. It will come together. You’ll be improving it before you know it
Thank you so much for these videos. I haven't played in years. Finally got a keyboard and am starting here. Just on time too. I was enjoying Dr. K and Terry Miles' other videos and was delighted to find lessons that I could follow! Thank you for bringing joy to the world with your music!
I watched this for the first time about a year ago and it was very confusing and frustrating that I wasn’t getting it. I now completely understand it. If you do not understand I recommend that you learn the minor blues scales and practice them along with chords to learn slow 12 bar blues improvisation. Once you are comfortable come back to these videos.
Just wanted to say hi and thanks for your videos. I started playing late in life and after 2 years of practice and some of your videos I'm starting to feel like a musician :D
This is extremely cool! I can keep up with you somewhat on the bass chop playing up to speed, and with the slowed down right hand... I started less than a week ago, complete newbie to piano... I have played banjo for a while. Thanks for sharing your talents in music and teaching!
Hi Dr K, just found your channel and I'm enjoying it immensely. You've given me a revived interest in learning to play this beautiful instrument. Cheers and thanks, Anne
I just purchased a piano because of you just so I can learn how to play this. Day 1 of practice was today 364 more to go. I’m ok with the left hand but the right hand seems to not want to work even though I’m right handed. Drives me mad lol.
Would love to hear you play "Stranger in My House" by Ronnie Milsap or "Money (That's What i Want)" by Barrett Strong. You play AWESOME! Could listen to you all day, every day.
Great music Dr K, l’ve only recently discovered Boogie Woogie and l’d really like to learn how to play it. Aargh! I spend all day yesterday sweating over a hot piano (and tablet) trying to work out the fifth chord riff of Hammy's boogie from your "Amazing" Boogie series after dutifully purchasing your Bad Ass Boogie book...and here you present a much easier, clearer riff which to me sounds even better. Just a minor gripe - I think what you're doing is fantastic and incredibly useful. I'm just a bit confused as to which series of your clips I should be starting with and in what order?
I like you & your camerawoman Brendan. I learned the 1st 16 bars, or so (the intro) to Boogie With Stu by Led Zeppelin (Ritchie Valen's Ooh My Head ala' Boogie Woogie). But I need to learn right hand riffs to fill it out. I have eclectic tastes & have a wide array of songs in my small repertoire. I can tell I'll learn a lot from you. Subscribed.
Thanks for your lesson, I am very green to play piano, but I like boogie woogie very much, hope could play as well someday! really nice sharing indeed!
Hi Brendan - any video touching on how to construct an improvisation and what notes are best to use. I have plenty of riffs down would just like to be able to play more from creativity Thanks
thanks for the info ... if you really have issues uploading to you tube look in to a video converter and convert it. you can upload things like 20 times faster if they are converted first .
Love the slow down to be able to learn it but it would also be helpful if you called out the letters as your hand moves from key to key. I realize you improvise too but at least it would give a basic foundation. Thanks and love your videos. Great job man.
I am having some serious problems playing the 3rd part. The improv is a bit tricky to figure out/copy on my part, still a bit to fast for me :), but ill keep rewinding and practicing as much as needed. Thank you very much for this video.
Cool....I too play boogie,....but my first lessons were scales,...all of them, until both my hands ached,....and then my teacher would make me play more of them,....guess what? It all started with middle C.....no easy way to learn....or at least in my case.....I learned long before internet, or videos, or really, for that matter, electricity! Loved the video though!
Where is the rest of Blueberry Hill? I did lesson 23 and want to learn the part for the G bass and then the bridge. I didn't see it in Vol 1 I will BUY it if you have it in any of your bundles. Love your stuff.
Hi Brendan! Love your lessons.Do you ever look back @ some of your earlier lessons and comments because one or two of us asked if you could show us a 'bridge' for Blueberry Hill.Any chance, please?
Brendan Kavanagh Thanks again for that last comment you gave at one of my stride piano video with that tapdancer. I added you at my youtube-profile at the "interesting video's" section. Keep up the good work ! Eeco
+Brendan Kavanagh (Dr. K) If I can figure out how to set something up will you flesh it out, since all I know is what you have said in your lessons and what is on the Wiki website for his group, Darts?
Hi Brendan, any chance (or have you already done it somewhere?) of a slowed-down version of the in-between section at around 6.06 to 6.11? It adds real excitement to this piece! Many thanks.
Hi Brendan, you are great, great, great! :-))) Thank you for all that fantastic stuff and all this efforts you made! I have a lot of fun with it. I'm a bloody beginner in Piano. but have some good guitar experience Coordinate right and left hand on the piano causes me mighty Problems. Have I to do for that some special exercises or does it come anyway?? Regards from Panama
Brendan Kavanagh What could make me believe that Dr. K is not a Dr. in medicine? :-))) Yessss, this exercise with the right foot. Please don't forget, not everybody has the constitution (age ...) to do so. Would it be a good idea to offer some videos which is guiding us step by step with some exercises in that direction? I think it's essential for beginners for succeeding.
Thanks dude! Just discovered your channel. The perfect lesson at the perfect time for a reviving Joanna player who's always wanted and still trying to learn Boggie Woogie. Exactly what I wanted to know. Hope you share more of your vast knowledge, skill and expertise. Thank you!
i don't have a piano but i do have a keyboard (a hammond clone with 61 keys) thanks for uploading the video's, its great to see. I am in the stage of that my left hand looses track whenever the right hands starts to play ;-(
+ETA KevinConley Hey Kevin, no more amazon stuff. The boogie woogie dude book, which used to be available on amazon, has been discontinued and is now incorporated into the Badass Boogie Bundles: www.badassboogie.com/
Hi Brendan, the irony is that I spent the best part of a year working on the Boogie Woogie Stomp left hand and now it's quite smooth and embedded in my muscle memory that I can't do an easier one like this! :( I could force myself but it's like starting all over again! Do you think this riff sounds okay with the Stomp left hand?
Retired last year at 68. Electric piano for Christmas and found your boogie woogie seris. I think you are fantastic. I have such a long way to go but maybe by the time I reach 90 I will be able to play one. Have nothing but time. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos/music!

Thank you for all that fantastic stuff and all this efforts you made! I have a lot of fun with it. I'm a bloody beginner in Piano. but have some good guitar experience
Coordinate right and left hand on the piano causes me mighty Problems.
Have I to do for that some special exercises or does it come anyway??
Regards from Panama
Have a look at the latest Rock n roll piano lesson (#11) and try the exercise on it. Also look the "Hands Together" boogie lesson.
Thank you!
Thanks for this, Rob.
Grill. Want to learn now. Thank you for sharing
Slow is the go, thanks.
i don't have a piano but i do have a keyboard (a hammond clone with 61 keys) thanks for uploading the video's, its great to see. I am in the stage of that my left hand looses track whenever the right hands starts to play ;-(
Look at the lesson "how to warm up for your boogie practice"
which goes into this issue. BK

+ETA KevinConley Hey Kevin, no more amazon stuff. The boogie woogie dude book, which used to be available on amazon, has been discontinued and is now incorporated into the Badass Boogie Bundles: www.badassboogie.com/

Hi Brendan,
the irony is that I spent the best part of a year working on the Boogie Woogie Stomp left hand and now it's quite smooth and embedded in my muscle memory that I can't do an easier one like this! :( I could force myself but it's like starting all over again! Do you think this riff sounds okay with the Stomp left hand?
