Dude, this was awesome. I like you showed the same effect using different tools, helps nail the concept!

What I used to do for this effect way back when it fidnt even have a name was sidechaining a gate with ghost kicks

    Lately?
Weve been using these slicer effects to tear up tracks & breaks for over 2 decades now... that is to say since we could draw in an LFO shapes and record their rates and depth live in realtime on the RS7000
The LFO's are just one way though... your explanation is great
Heres a couple freebies for ya's from an oldskooler...
You can easily cheat & get these results quickly...
!) grab an arpegiator and assign it to a couple knobs. Set one to gate, the other to velocity and another to octave range or rate if you want... Now simply record your knobs gate and arp rate control movements as needed. The ancient MC303 could do this 30yrs ago & record its arpegiator, so its a no brainer.
    2) Sending the signal to a sidechained hihat or basic waveform as a signal controller (or anything running a basic pattern) BUT the kicker is to assign a gate effect to sidechain, Grab a NOISE GATE & use that instead of compressor... So what would normally be sidechained and pumping your lead in accordance with the chained signal pattern, is instead gating/releasing the lead (to the rythmic pattern) holding the chain.. basically a reverse sidechain... So you only release the signal when your lead reaches a certain threshold you set... hard to explain but easy to figure out. Just use gate instead of compressor and harden up your envelope for crunchier slices
    3) Then theres slicer effects.. which is basic and does its namesake...
Theres afew more ways but hopefully this helps

what a fire tutorial. it got real and you passed along a "concept" instead of a singular production technique when you showed how to achieve it in different ways, different tools.

Simply the best tutorial on this effect. I'd be interested to know what you favourite method is. Anyway, thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Hey! Love your tutorial! I wonder - I have Shaperbox 3, but when I am using the volumeshaper to get the stutter effect I cannot figure out where the "speed" is (to get the effect where the stuttering goes from fast to slow or the other way). I have looked all over the internet but just cannot find it. I can see that you are using Shaperbox 2 in this video but do you know where this is in Shaperbox 3?

This is such a great tutorial! I am trying to re-create that fluttery lead/pluck sound at 0:08 in Anna's track Cosmovision to have that smooth note repeat effect, and I am using your apreggiator method with sync off. Do you how she makes that note repeat kind of fade out like she does? I tried automating an auto filter and an eq to get a similar effect, but was just curious if you had any ideas!

How do you do that sort of technique (heard in David Guetta Love Tonight remix at approx 28 seconds in) where the lead introduces itself? Thanks

He just did this very same thing, when the stuttering stopped on the previous bar it just starts playing normal right after it, Guetta did this very same thing
