OMG! You went to Sofia! I'm Chinese and my husband's Bulgarian! I went to Sofia twice! And yea, not everything they serve is up to/for our Asian palette! I don't know how my husband drinks that yogurt and cucumber thing either or this thick wheat drink. It usually a soup and they add alot of salt and garlic in it. When you said big franchise, I can only think of Happy. If it's Happy, their pork dishes are good. If you see moussaka on the menu, its worth a try too. Different from the Greek version. Service in Bulgaria is actually very slow. I had one of the best beef tongues in Bulgaria! The tripe soup, it depends on the restaurant, some are really good! If you have time for spa, I recommend Yoni Spa! They have this thing called Hammam and it was an interesting experience!
