To answer your question, “You’re The Voice” has held up. The song came out 86 this concert was 1989 and it still hold up every well today it’s an anthem here and always will be. John has the most purest voice in the world and that came from Freddy Mercury himself. There is no drum machine in this John has his band drummer and he has the MSO behind him and no auto turn here at all that’s a bloody insult to any Australian artist that can sing because if you can’t sing live don’t bother coming out on stage to sing. No auto-tune here. 3 drumsets...MSO bass drums, standing drummer and John's band drummer Angus Burchall. Keep an eye on John in his concerts. His audience connection is wonderful. He's such a larrikin. Watch for his vocal range, mike control & mike-stand shenanigans and general all round charm & geniality.
It's held up very well, in that it's an anthem here. John performed it at a music festival in around 2019 I think, and everyone in the crowd sang it loudly and with passion, despite the vast majority of them not having even been born in 1986. This album is still the biggest selling album in Australia by an Australian, and it's the second biggest selling of all time. It's difficult to explain what this song means to Australians, so it's really not about whether it's held up musically or not, it's about what it, and John, mean culturally here. Which is a hell of a lot. Even if you don't love his music, if you watch more of John (always live), you'll probably pretty rapidly come to the conclusion that he's one of the best singers you've ever heard. His voice is amazing, and incredibly diverse. Hope you do some more - Help! and Long Way To The Top from the same concert are probably good things to do next if you're looking for suggestions. You will definitely get Australians watching the channel if you keep reacting to John, lol.
Haha welcome to Farnsey! It's an Australian iconic classic, guaranteed to get any Aussie singing along if it comes on in any situation. I agree it can be seen as cheesy to outsiders, but Aussies love it to death. Farnsey can sing pretty much anything, rock, pop, opera and theatre! Nah not too mean lol, firm but fair 😂
Aussies will forgive you for your ignorance as long as you promise to watch and listen to more of Australian, John Farnham. John sings in over 20 genres from hard rock 'n roll to gentle ballads and most in between, so take a pick. He is a consummate professional with a career spanning six decades and has had many hit songs and albums, and many sell-out concerts multiple times over, including overseas, and has sung with and been praised by numerous musical artists. Do not take your eyes off him as he has a very charismatic stage presence and the audience is with him all the way. There are biographies and a film about him. He was awarded 'Australian of the Year,' by the Australian Government for his services to the music industry. He gives concerts for charity. He is a humble, lovely and funny man, devoted to his wife and family. John's vocal gymnastic abilities are fantastic. He is a singing genius. As for this song, 'You're The Voice', it is an anthem and a classic, a message to the world about taking back power and using it to make our world a better place for all. People in the the USA, with its outrageous, deadly gun culture, should ask themselves, in the words of the song, "How long can we look at each other down the barrel of a gun?" ( Also check out, on You Tube, Jim Jeffries' comedy on this topic of USA gun culture.) When John Farnham sings, his Soul shines through for all to experience the joy he gives. He is much loved in Oz !
Very Good Points Indeed 😎 It takes awhile to learn about legendary artist in other countries ❤️ America often confuses me and the Gun Culture is definitely one of them. Kinda makes me want to move down there for sure (or Canada) 😁 I Have a friend in Melbourne who has shared some of the Jim Jeffries videos with me ... very funny and on point ... Cheers from Texas 👍🏼
A cover was done by Robbie Williams at last year's footy grand final (big sporting event approx 100 000 people in attendance) as a tribute to John almost 40 years after the concert you watched. I don't think I'm exaggerating to say it was better sung by the crowd than our national anthem.
The unofficial national anthem of Australia sung by one of the best male vocalists of our time.. JF has sung with the likes of Tom Jones, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Sammy Davis Jr, oh and of course this legendary Aussie singer Americans haven’t heard of - Jimmy Barnes!
I apologize for Americas ignorance on both John and Jimmy 😳 Happy to dive into more tunes from both legends.....well better late than never. I often wonder why certain artist don't crack America !?
@@reactionextraction well for John it was much about personal choice, he was a family man and the US wasn’t his scene- he did do well in Europe but the US didn’t know what to do with him 😂 Richard Marx said he was the best singer he’d ever heard. As for Jimmy Barnes- his band Cold Chisel were rudely turned down by a U.S. record producer and they came home and wrote “You got nothin I want” a hit single- Cold Chisel were Australia’s best rock band and more popular locally than AC/DC OR INXS.
Interesting, nice a Richard Marx reference 👍🏼 I understand US is not for everyone. Shame to miss out on such talented artist. Australia has some amazing classic artist 4 sure. I know Ty really likes Tame Impala. That’s cool 😎
@@reactionextraction With John, he's just a down-to-earth guy - he loves his family and really didn't want to be away touring all the time, and didn't want to move them all over there. He also loves his relationship with his audience (it's part of why he's so well loved here), and he's said before that so many people here had been with him since the 60s, he could never have that relationship with any other audience, and also that it would feel a bit like a betrayal to them to just leave. Basically he's been happy with a relatively normal life here, and gotten to spend his life doing what he loves, which is performing live and being with his family.
You don't have to like every song you hear, that is OK! Which genre do you like the most to listen to, as he can sing anything. ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Beetles etc. Many will tell you this song is still relevant for today. He is the G.O.A.T, He is known as "The Voice" for a reason, not because of the song "You're the Voice". John Farnham, is the only Australian artist to have a number-one record (album or single) in five consecutive decades. He is still very popular today considering he is 70 odd. He is very much loved by Australians and he has list of first rate singers that agree with us. Most of us love and admire him not just as a singer but as a man. When you see Olivia Newton-John or Celine Dion, singing with him you can see the admiration and love they have for this man. When it was announced he had mouth cancer and had to be operated on. Most Australians held their breath and prayed for him. Our prayers were answered he has made a full recovery as far as I know.
Great Comments 😎❤️ I look forward to diving into more John and Jimmy .... crazy good vocals & talent from these dudes .... happy to discover these legends from another country. America really missed out, wouldn't be the first time, ha
6 consecutive decades. Don't forget 2015nand 2016 albums released with ONJ. and nit only did they reach number 1 back then. That Christmas album with ONJ from 2016 is back in the Aussie charts again now. The Longevity of John Farnham is 2nd to none .
The song has held up very well in Australia. It's almost a second anthem. It was a rock pop release but this concert was specifically working with an orchestra which gave this song even more epic depth. JF has done all sorts of genres. Master performer. Yeah the song in the 80s echoed social attitudes towards anti war, anti conflict, anti hate, human rights, the beginnings of environmental awareness. The bagpipes, drum and whistle actually meant to give a military march feel. Call to action. If you look at military Bands it makes sense. ❤
I'm impressed with the Aussie music scene 😎 The Artist bring such a presence when performing Live 😎 It's like I've stepped into a whole other world of amazing performers, can't wait to explore more !!
Thankyou for you honest reaction, song, yes maybe a little dated, but the words still hold true for today, I recommend 'Help' and Ít's a long way to the Top'' from the same concert, also anything from his Çhain Reaction' concert, - and for something different, 'Please don't ask me' duet with Olivia Newton-John from the 'Main Event" concert.
Talk about a song with a special message! And performed to perfection by the best male vocalist of all time. As well as a sensation performer. Not many performers regularly through the mic stand several meters in the air and the catch it while still singing to perfection. John is known as the voice. John can and has sung anything and most genres. Rock, to blues, ballads, heavy rock, and even opera. Epic. You really need to dive further into John before forming an opinion on one epic song over 30 years ago.
What do you mean has it held up well?? How can you possibly question that! The message is as poignant and relevant today as it was back then! This song is an anthem and John is as popular today as he has ever been!!!!! Never ever ever cast a shadow on our John. He is the greatest voice of all time. He is the voice!
The US is one of the few countries where this song didn’t chart well. It was a big hit in Europe, number 1 in Germany and Sweden and top ten in five or six other countries. I think You’re the Voice will still be around for a while yet. John sang it in March 2020 at the Fire Fight concert in front of 75,000 people, accompanied by Brian May from Queen on his guitar, his voice as strong as ever.
The lyrics are probably quite pertinent to America today…"How long can we look at each other down the barrel of a gun.” And to add to the relevance…Robbie Williams sang this at the Aussie 2021 football (AFL, our own football game) Grand Final.
This song was written to raise awareness of the cold war missiles aimed at each other. " Look at each other doen the barrel of a gun"? Celine Dion did this in her Aussie concerts.
That is right , and Celine Dion was such a fan of John Farnham her dream was to sing with him. She asked him to sing You're the Voice with her (John was in his 70-s ) you could see how much she admired him on that stage.

You’re The Voice is regarded as a unofficial national anthem of Australia . It’s a classic and revitalised John Farnham’s career beyond any Australians imagination in 1986 while making the Whispering Jack album John was regarded as washed up late 60’s early 70s teen pop idol he wasn’t bankable even that in 1982 to 1986 he was the replacement lead singer of once highly successful in USA the Little River Band , LRB by time John was in LRB the band was already sliding in popularity in the USA . John within LRB had a top 20 billboard hit with The Other Guy in 1983 . John paid he’s rock n roll dues in LRB that left him broke . John’s late manager Glenn Wheatley who always believed that he’s best friend client had a lot more talent that most Australians grew up on in the 60’s and 70’s witnessed . So Glenn Wheatley financed the album Whispering Jack himself without any help from any major record company . Every record company in Australia turned the record down and radio stations refuse to play John Farnham tagging him as uncool corny. But variety television loved John with the first promotion performance of You’re The Voice on Australian variety television show Hey Hey It’s Saturday and one fm radio station caving in and playing You’re The Voice the song just took off , even radio stations had to take their phones off the hook, because the request for the song was so high . You’re The Voice end up going to number 1 for 6 weeks and album Whispering Jack was number 1 for 26 weeks . today Whispering Jack has sold 1,680.000 copies in a country of 25,000,000 people that’s 24x platinum in Australia. So if John had the same level of success in USA that he has had in Australia he equally successful as Michael Jackson . In 1988 John Farnham was named Australian Of The Year for not only being first Australian artist to sell over 1 million copies of 1 album , but first artist overall in Australia to such that . Proving that local domestic artists can out sell big international artists like Michael Jackson , Bruce Springsteen , Dire Straits , Billy Joel and Elton John within Australian own market . John has always regained being a humble family before being a pop star or an icon. Since the early 2000’s he slowly sliding in semi retirement . With longer time between albums and more greatest hits tours with appearances headlining outdoor music festivals in his latter years. John is now at legend status in Australia , unfortunately he some bad luck with a month cancer battle and he has the all clear and in recovery at the moment.
@@reactionextraction yeah John was the lead singer of The Little River Band from 1982 to early 1986 . Glenn Wheatley who managed LRB and John Farnham from 1980 . Graham Goble the founding member of LRB was writing so many songs that he thought was in much higher key for original singer Glenn Shorrock to sing . So Graham wanted to work with John and use his songs as a showcase. John is only a casual songwriter himself so John was keen to sing Graham’s songs . In 1980 John recorded Uncovered album with 8 out 10 tracks on the album written a produced by Graham Goble . Uncovered is like an unofficial Little River Band album has some of LRB’s members playing on it , as well a very young Tommy Emmanuel on guitar . Uncovered features Please Don’t Ask Me which is one Graham Goble best written love songs . And John does an epic rearrangement of the Beatles classic Help which was a massive hit in Australia . Well with Graham Goble making this album with John , Graham wasn’t writing songs with Glenn Shorrock in mind no longer and Glenn Shorrock an accomplished songwriter himself couldn’t keep up with Graham’s songwriting pace . Tension between Graham and Glenn started by 1981 making Time Exposure album both Graham and Glenn wasn’t even recording together and Glenn was fighting to get his songs onto that album . After the Time Exposure tour North America , Europe and Australia Glenn Shorrock was exhausted and wanted the band to take a break , Graham disagreed and Glenn Shorrock was fired. Graham lobbied manager Glenn Wheatley to just let John Farnham join LRB . After all LRB was a supergroup made up from established well known Australian artists and John fitted the criteria . John was hungry to sing to massive crowds on big stages he gave it 110% every time . But not everyone in LRB like John’s stage presence and some members believe that John was out shining the rest of the band and LRB became John’s backing band . They even stuck John’s microphone lead down so he wouldn’t move around the stage . John wasn’t Glenn Shorrock , Glenn just stood there behind the microphone stand and just sing . John is an absolute entertainer he works the stage interacting with the audience. Well more original members left LRB in 1983 after the album The Net which featured Down On The Border ( Australian number 7 ) and the underrated We Two which was a minor hit in USA . With Graham the only original member left in LRB the changing direction happened in 1984 with very underrated Playing To Win album the title track Playing To Win was written by John about his frustrations with being in the band . LRB had one more album with American label deal capital records and LRB released No Reins 1986 the last LRB album to feature John Farnham . But by the time No Reins was released John Farnham had left the band and was making his comeback album Whispering Jack . Capital Records didn’t even released any singles originally with John on lead vocals they pushed for Wayne Nelson the American bassist few songs on the album to be the singles because he had a more similar vocal tone to Glenn Shorrock. Capital Records only released When The War Is Over as a single to cash in John’s solo success with You’re The Voice at the end. Of 1986 When The War Is Over magnificent cover of Cold Chisel song that featured Steven Prestwich from Cold Chisel on drums who wrote the song . LRB’s harmonies are perfect on this song . Graham Goble was forced to put LRB on hiatus when John and some other members plus manager Glenn Wheatley all went with John . 1988 Graham Goble was offered a deal with MCA records and new manager on the terms that Glenn Shorrock was to return to LRB . LRB recorded 2 more album with Shorrock before more revolving members left the band with no original members and no Australians in the current line up .
Did u see the high mic stand toss, when the camera was shooting from behind at a distance, then camera back on John as he catches it, then a bar or two & he tosses it to the side. Oh this song, all these years later, stills stirs the soul. There's quite a story behind Whispering Jack. John's first hit was a song he didn't want to do. Sadie The Cleaning Lady. It was a hit for him... but it also typecast him. He had a few more hits, but struggled to get studios/radio to take him seriously. His first manager didn't do right by John. He nearly went bankrupt, plummeted into depression, & it looked like his career was over.... until his mate Glenn Wheatley, a great musician himself, chose to step in. He took over management of John, they started working on Whispering Jack, Glenn mortgaged his house to the hilt, they wrote as well as found songs from other songwriters etc (this song came from the UK), & the album came together. The bagpipes was John's idea. Glenn had to convince a radio station head to play this track on air... & the rest is Australian music history. Many hits came from this one album. Shortly after John's dearest friend Olivia Newton John (ONJ) passed from cancer, John was given the devastating news that he had mouth cancer. As he battled, & went thru massive surgery, he also lost his best mate Glenn, to C-19 complications. Recently his family reported that the surgery appears to be a success, & John's free of cancer. We don't know if he'll ever perform again... but we have his amazing music to cherish. He's far from just a pop singer. He's a music performance genius. What is even more exceptional is that John has said he's never had a singing lesson. This is him naturally. When u hear him sing, acapella, no mic, no desk for the sound to run thru, no autotune... just John's voice, u know he's one of the greatest of all time.
This song earned John the name The Voice. John is better in concert than recording studio and sings in probably 20 different styles. Its a pity you got so into it that you shut your eyes, you missed so much
Famous in any genre. Cheesy does not cut it for me. I saw him on RUclips for the first time and watch everything I can. One of my all time favorite singers.
@@reactionextraction What you should know is that a John Farnham concert audience would range from 5-year-olds to 80-year-olds. He had to perform music that crossed generations. Black Dog tends to target a narrower range, so he never performed it at a concert (I'm told only once). The one recording available on RUclips is a sound check from the early 90's. When you eventually listen to this example of musical perfection (his whole band as well), consider this - it wasn't rehearsed for a performance. It was basically a jam session.
I know, right? I couldn't believe he looked away just as John tossed, caught and threw that mic, then looked away again when he picked it up with his foot. If he does any more reactions from our John, he has to learn not to look away for a second when John's on the stage.

I look forward to many more reactions to both John and Jimmy ❤️😎 What's wrong with the US? We really missed the boat on these music legends 😳😳
Great Request!!! Thank you so much for helping the world hear the special talent that is John Farnham!! Great Reaction!!!! Thank You so Much ✌✌✌ 🇦🇺
Believe You Me I am sharing this video with all my American friends ❤️😎👍🏼
Here here.!
John has had charting number ones for 5 DECADES. John hold up and can pretty much own any genre he wants.
This guy has sung Hard rock, soul, rock opera, pop, you name it.
Oh yes, his WARM UP that was recorded of Black Dog is mind blowing!
6 consecutive decades. Don't forget 2015nand 2016 albums released with ONJ.
and nit only did they reach number 1 back then. That Christmas album with ONJ from 2016 is back in the Aussie charts again now. The Longevity of John Farnham is 2nd to none .
My mistake, thanks for the correction..👍💕@@carolynh8866
This song is actually our unofficial national anthem!!! EVERYONE loves it! ❤
Loved this song by John Farnham and the bagpipes super always loved it, and you have good taste Quint love to all xxx.
It’s an Aussie legend. You should also check out Help from the same concert.
Great suggestions!
The lyrics hold up because of what the world is going through. It is about using your voice and standing up to to make yourself heard.
Very True ❤️
Talk about a song with a special message! And performed to perfection by the best male vocalist of all time. As well as a sensation performer. Not many performers regularly through the mic stand several meters in the air and the catch it while still singing to perfection. John is known as the voice. John can and has sung anything and most genres. Rock, to blues, ballads, heavy rock, and even opera. Epic. You really need to dive further into John before forming an opinion on one epic song over 30 years ago.
It is still his best song. He still gets the same reaction in 2023. He is recovering from mouth surgery.
Best voice ever.. please react to John singing help. Also John singing with Jimmy barnes
2023, everyone still knows the words.
That is so true...
What do you mean has it held up well?? How can you possibly question that! The message is as poignant and relevant today as it was back then! This song is an anthem and John is as popular today as he has ever been!!!!! Never ever ever cast a shadow on our John. He is the greatest voice of all time. He is the voice!
I'm learning 😎❤️ takes a bit to get the mojo and rep of an artist in another country. He is most definitely is the voice 👍🏼
I apologize for my countries ignorance on the greatness of both John & Jimmy 😳 What can I say America often confuses me 🇺🇸 ❤️🇦🇺
No need for an apology. You will learn to love both of them now that you have heard them sing. @@reactionextraction
The lyrics are probably quite pertinent to America today…"How long can we look at each other down the barrel of a gun.” And to add to the relevance…Robbie Williams sang this at the Aussie 2021 football (AFL, our own football game) Grand Final.
Yep I totally agree with you on that ❤️ powerful lyrics indeed
Wait for it 😂 if you react they will come. Help from the same concert should be next
Definitely agree help with the MSO
Help is definitely on my list to do ..... highly requested, can't wait to hear ❤️😎
@@reactionextraction you won't be disappointed ☺️
Any other recommendations for me … 👍🏼 I’m learning on the go here :-)
@reactionextraction Jimmy barnes, stone cold would be another great one
This song was written to raise awareness of the cold war missiles aimed at each other. " Look at each other doen the barrel of a gun"?
Celine Dion did this in her Aussie concerts.
That is right , and Celine Dion was such a fan of John Farnham her dream was to sing with him. She asked him to sing You're the Voice with her (John was in his 70-s ) you could see how much she admired him on that stage.
Yes, Celine even bowed down to John on stage !
Very appropriate for America to hear for sure I would say 😎 Great Lyrics Indeed
🤗Every overseas artist 🫶who comes to this country 🇦🇺has sung this to the crowd.💕Celine Deon, Queen, Coal Play!💕For the Bush Fire fundraiser,🇦🇺2019 he was onstage with 💕Olivia Newton John, Queen and 💕and had the crowd singing along!💋💋💋💋🫶🫶🫶💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶💋💋💋💋💋💋💋🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
Wait, John sang some for Little River Band? They were huge in America like 78-83. Lonesome Loser is one of my Favs 😎❤️
You will love Jimmy Barnes.
John Farnham is a legend here in Australia
This song earned John the name The Voice. John is better in concert than recording studio and sings in probably 20 different styles. Its a pity you got so into it that you shut your eyes, you missed so much
Yes apparently I missed the mic stand throw, but I'm a newbie 😎 I gotta pay more attention, these Aussie live performance are incredible !
Definitely timeless anthem! Still loved today ❤❤
It's his signature song but like all signature songs it gets played to death.
Famous in any genre. Cheesy does not cut it for me. I saw him on RUclips for the
first time and watch everything I can. One of my all time favorite singers.
He can do rock better than Led Zeppelin. Just listen to him sing Black Dog.
100%. You must listen to him sing Black Dog
OK great recommendation I will 😎😎
@@reactionextraction What you should know is that a John Farnham concert audience would range from 5-year-olds to 80-year-olds.
Another reactor who missed the mic toss
I know, right? I couldn't believe he looked away just as John tossed, caught and threw that mic, then looked away again when he picked it up with his foot. If he does any more reactions from our John, he has to learn not to look away for a second when John's on the stage.
I did notice that in my edit ... where did it go? 😎 Ive never seen anything quite like that 🤘🏼pretty badass
Our unofficial national anthem 🎉
John performed in America for about 3yrs as the lead singer for The Little River Band
That’s Australia for ya
He missed the mic toss...hohoho
You need to watch he's cover same orchestra Beatles help way different
Also his AC /DC along way to the top with Melbourne symphony orchestra
Then only get recording led zeppelin black dog these will show you he's voice
John able to sing all genre
Rock, pop, Ballard's ,opera , theatre ect
Mate just say what you think don't worry about affending other as it you believe and not going to like everything
Just remember to listern to other song of artists you don't like to get a all round view of them which I'm sure you would
People need to understand their watching your reaction not the singers as already know them
Yes you may lose a few watcher's but the genuine will make the site as be their always
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
Ps watch John and Jimmy sing together when theirs something wrong with my baby
Two Aussie ledgens together
Also look at cold chisel cover wild thing live last stand version
That was is the classic anti war anthem in Australia. Listen to the lyrics.
Yes Very appropriate Gary for my American friends indeed , great lyrics and on point for sure 😎❤️ Cheers from Texas
Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Looking forward to it indeed ❤️😎🤘🏼
😥After the bagpipes,😢you missed the microphone 🎤 stand toss and catch!!💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
I did notice that in my edit ... where did the it go?
@reactionextraction first he threw it in the air and caught it, then he throws it across the stage, then he picks it up with his foot a bit later, when he gets the audience to sing. 😀
Wow a true dude & entertainer on stage … major Mojo 😎😎
drum machine beat thing? thats called an orchestra dude
My Bad, I thought I saw a synth in there on stage 😳
Cheesy? The only thing cheesy here mate is your reaction! Certainly not the man or the fabulous performance you just listened to.
Sadly they recently stole this song for political purposes which goes against everything it means.
It’s a political song? “They” didn’t steal it John gave his support to the Voice campaign. It’s his song he can do what he wants
