I think this is the closest to a "hero story" H.P Lovecraft had ever written (that I have read/heard). I love that Menes got justice for his kitty.

This story reminded me of the whole Not Even Doom Music meme.

What a pain this was to re-edit - I used to make all kinds of clicks and pops with my speaking voice all those years ago, and it took me forever to get rid of them.
You'll notice that my more recent stories are told very differently - I don't think I'd use such a laid-back style as this today.
In one of those 'unusual' coincidences, I decided to re-edit and reload this story today, and only when I'd built the video did I notice that I'd recorded the audio exactly 3 years ago... to the day.

Yours is the best reading of this story imo.

Later still, the slow-witted people of the village of Ulthar noticed there was no more stinking piles of poop littering the foot-paths and wagon-ways, and it was only then that the people of the village of Ulthar noticed the dogs of Ulthar had disappeared AS WELL…. yet, had not returned. However, they got over it.

I love your voice for these stories!
They're so wonderful to listen to, when I am sick and not capable of reading them myself.

Nick. Glad you are back. I had to dig all over for this, when you got canned. You are a great narrator, or orator. Whatever. Good job.

@RaphKittyKat I gave too many clues! Either that or there are very few HPL stories with such characters. I really only read them just before I record them, so this one is new to me today, which is part of the enjoyment - once I find a story I just know it's one I have to record. Now I'm just looking for a suitable icy thumbnail image before I sit down with the mic!

@RaphKittyKat You're right, and it's why I recorded it in this way in the first place, but I'm also laid back in places where it would probably have been beneficial to put a little more emotion into a word or two! I'm enjoying using different ways of speaking into the mic. Some stories are particularly full on, such as 'Nyarlathotep', and 'Hop-Frog' needed an unusual voice, which was fun. My next HPL video calls for a woman with an accent, so see if you can guess which one it is!

I have used your narration to introduce my children to the Kadath stories, and some of Lord Dunsany's works. People forget sometimes Lovecraft's weird tales were better than much of his horror.

One of the nicer stories. Such a nice nice happy story about such happy nice furry animals. And what they can do ..

Thank you much for your readings. I never noticed how much of the alienation Lovecraft espoused in his writings can be found in Titus Groan and Gormenghast. I wonder...
On the by and by, have you ever thought about crossing the line from "reading" to doing a dramatic reading such as Vincent Price did with the writings of Poe. You have the voice for it.

But i love the laid back reading! It compliments this story so very well. Lovecraft himself would of approved I'm sure.

@irviki55a Don't worry, plenty more where this came from, although I've just had to abandon a reading part way through when I realised that I was so hungry that my stomach rumblings were distracting me - not to mention they might have appeared in the audio!

@Gisburne2000 The voicing in Hop-Frog was top notch. There's nothing wrong with adding your own flavor to it.

I've got a black cat, I don't understand the mindset of saying I'm only a dog person. I've never heard somebody who had a cat or cats who said they weren't dog people.

@RaphKittyKat That was why I decided to upload this one again today. There is another reference in this to black cats on St John's Eve, but I can't find it in any of his other stories. Google didn't help either. Any ideas?

Beware of the unknown monk. The curtain he's wearing is like a bug lamp. If he hands you a kitten, you'd better rethink your life. I have no troubles with him because I'm nice to my cat. I have common sense. Your situation may be different.

They should merely have sent the old couple the cats from Saturn.
That would have solved this problem
