@@MF-dh8ky You born stupid? All it's saying is they wish they found the channel sooner, it's not a fucking thinkpeice you're better off not saying anything at all
A distinction between " training " and retention needs to be made . All dogs can be trained but some retain their training longer and more consistently than others . For example i had a Kangal dog prior to my Shiba . they are notorious for being difficult to train , but as it turns out their biggest problem is retention . However, the lack of retention is not based of being stupid but on a will power that makes a shiba look like the most docile and obedient dog on the planet . During consistent trading it appears as though they have permanently learned what they were taught , but once the training stops , they revert to doing what they want . this is not a bad thing if the dog is being used what they are born to do ,which is protect livestock . they need to make decisions on their own as the circumstances change from minute to minute . trining their natural tendency out of them is a bad thing . i suspect that a shiba's stubbornness also has some historical reason for their behavior . dogs are not born to obey humans , that is a human thing that is imposed on them .
Hi: I came to your channel from James and Laurent's. I thought this was a wonderful video and pretty much agree with all the points. I've not yet watched your other training videos, but I think one thing that doesn't get stressed enough in many of the training videos I've seen elsewhere---and articles I've read--is the importance of building and having a good relationship. No matter what training method and/or tools are used, they won't work if the handler doesn't work to build a solid relationship of trust, respect, and boundaries with the dog. It sounds like your doggo is very lucky to have you as her family and that you've done a lot of work with him, so what a lucky boy! His good behavior is a reflection of all the work and time you have put into teaching him. It's great that you're making videos to educate people. There are still too many who want these dogs because of their looks alone, and that is so sad for the animal. I currently don't have a Shiba Inu, though I have been around plenty of them. I do love their independent, bold, and stubborn streak. But my first love are German Shepherds followed by Border Collies... different breeds, but all three are crazy high energy dogs, not for the faint of heart! I love learning from other dog handlers of high-energy dogs. Thank you for this video; keep up the great work, and wags to your doggo.
Hi thanks so much for the comment and welcome to the channel. German Shepard and border collie are both extremely smart breed👍🏻 the bond you mentioned is the key for any training for sure. It takes time for a new dog to get to know you and building bonds. For Shiba Inu I would say the first 6 months is the critical development period for both training and bonding 👍🏻
I got my puppy last week... He doesn't like to walk... He plops down to eat everything around him...lol Smartest little boy...I have training pad down and he knew right away what's up... Doesn't bark... Hates water so far... Love this little guy!!
@@ericwilliams1124 I tried to adopt a dog for months and when I was told it's already adopted or we don't work with mass residents because of out of state adoption policies prevents animals being adopted to Massachusetts. I ended up getting him online from a breeder.
so i'm thinking of getting a shiba inu within the next year, and i have two questions regarding the environment around i've heard either in this video and/or previous ones that it's best to have a fenced off back-yard to play in. our house doesn't have one, how big of an issue is this? we live in the swiss countryside (canton zurich, so it's flatter than most) so there are a lot of trails and public parks around. my other question is how long can you leave a shiba, a puppy in particular, alone? everyone in the house would either be at school or (potentially) at work and would be gone for most of the day. i've heard from other sources with similar situations that they tire their dog out before they leave so it sleeps first and, from its perspective, is alone for less time. i feel pretty good about everything else, these are the only issues i'm having in my decision
Hi thanks for reaching out and welcome to the channel! I won’t worry too much about not having a yard as long as you exercise your dog fully every day. Either walk him or take him to nearby trials are all great options for exercise. If you won’t be home during the day for the most part. Make sure you walk your dog before you leave home in the morning and let him out first thing after you are back. For puppy it might be hard for him to hold all day so you might need to find a designated area for him to release. For grown up dog(6 months+) he should be find stay home without accident during most of the day. Just make sure you spend enough time to play and exercise him when you are back. Good luck.
I am now "babysitting" a shiba inu. We are doing great. Other people are just saying I am doing it wrong why is he not sitting and stuff. I told them because thats not he wants to do now. And they dont get it "its just a dog". :(
I am glad you understand the dog. For people who don't know Shiba Inu or don't understand their personality it is hard to get it. Shiba Inu is definitely a unique one and is not any dog.
do you have any tips on coming back to the owner off leash? my shiba really has her priority’s and preferes to explore than follow me at the local dog park, and she once wandered off, and thought that when i was following her trying to put the leash on, that it was an “ok” to keep walking. that was very scary, but i don’t know what else to do. i don’t like extending leashes and she isn’t food motivated.. any tips?
This is a tough one. Typically it is never recommend to let your Shiba Inu off leash under any circumstance if you are outside. They were breed as a hunting dog so if they see anything that intrigued them will run away to chase it. Your situation happened a few times with us as well. If she is not food motivated what had worked for us is to pick us a tree branch/leaf or something that look fun from the floor and make it look like it is really fun to lure your dog back. Tree branches usually works for jimmy because he loves to bite tree branch, but still I won't recommend to have a Shiba Inu off leash at any time.
The thing about getting a Sheba--but really any dog--to come to you is to break it into very small steps and have a systematic approach. Shiba Inus have a high prey drive since they were originally bred to hunt. Teaching a recall can be more challenging, but not impossible. I'm not sure what your process has been, but often times, the training process for a task hasn't been broken down enough. Also, regular practice and consistency are important; teaching a recall is a time-consuming process, especially for a high prey driven dog, and it requires consistency. It also requires that you really step back and look at things from your dog's point of view as well as your approach as her handler. The latter can be hard because it means acknowledging and owning the flaws in your mistakes. Questions that I always ask myself when I'm training my dog is: Is what I'm doing setting my dog up for success? If my dog isn't doing what I ask, have I spent enough time training him, or am I expecting too much before he is ready? If a dog is moving and you move toward her, she will keep moving away from you; do the opposite to encourage her to follow you, but do this in low-distraction settings initially, then build to higher distraction areas. Find what motivates her, and make a big deal when she gets close to you. Long lines/leashes are incredibly useful for teaching a recall. If teaching a recall sounds too overwhelming, then don't let her off leash at all outside. Otherwise, you are taking a huge gamble by having her wander/run around loose. Good luck.

I'm already going on super long walks with her and let her in the garden but when she's home, she destroys everything. I tell her 'no' and she stops for a bit but as soon as I don't pay her any attention anymore she starts again. I really don't know what to do anymore. She is sooo stubborn
Hi did you try providing chewing toys like bone or squeaky toys? I used to use cone at leave yogurt or peanut butter in it and that normally will shift Jimmy's attention to the toy instead of the furniture. Another way to use up the energy is to have her play with other dogs, that normally will wear off the energy too. Good luck !
