- After spending August working his ass off on the Back 40, Mark Kenyon is ready to get the heck off of the property and let it rest. Michigan is one of the most heavily hunted states in the country for whitetails, which gives our crew the opportunity to be one of the few small properties that doesn’t spook every mature buck into the next county. As it turns out, Steven Rinella and Janis Putelis have a different idea. It's the opening day of squirrel season, and the boys are ready to get after ol' bushy, even if they have to tromp through Mark's sanctuary to do it.

Here's a look at the upcoming Back 40 episodes through the end of the year:
Ep. 4 on 11/11: Mark hunts deer on the property for the first time.
Ep. 5 on 11/25: Doug Duren joins Mark to check on the property's progress and hunt the late October pre-rut.
Ep. 6 on 12/9: It's the peak rut and Ben O'Brien is back to see if any of the early season work will pay dividends.
Ep. 7 on 12/16: Mark is joined by his dad for a very special hunt.

Laughed my ass off when Steve with a straight face tells him about the deer/squirrel study and squirrel pressure triggers their "hyper thalamus" and causes their racks to explode in size. LOL
Mark is me when I'm trying to have fun but also keep the party under control that my room mate is throwing.
The wait between these episodes is killing me man.

Haha no, keep it south. Everything they do is up north or out west. It’s cool being represented for once. Lol. I doubt they’ll ever film anything in Arkansas where I’m at, but at least it’s still in the south.

My favorite part of any hunt is time with friends and family and the memories created.
My favorite part is snuggling up with my buddies around the fire.

Squirrel hunting with a .22 before deer season is a great tune up for hunting deer.

I'm with mark on this one. I've hunt in a place that has alot of pressure. I go through all the same routines and more to give myself the best opportunity for success. I know exactly how he feels. It's like when my kid says he has too pee when we are in the middle of the property...noooooo!!

My family and I call pine squirrels "golden squirrels" bc they're rare to see and they're one of a kind. They love the bird feeder and they do crazy acrobatics back into the trees when they get spooked. Very entertaining. Its better than watching TV!

Sorry guys; this title didn’t entice me much but knowing Steve’s affinity for squirrels, I waited to view it. After watching ~5 minutes I realized I woulda been fine waitin’ longer or not watching it at all.Thx, & look fwd to what you post next.
Watching Janis slowly realizing what mark was doing and starting to laugh had me cracking up so hard.
I'm just like Mark! I would lose my marbles. That's why I squirrel hunt after whitetail season is completely over and it also gives me a great opportunity to scout my property and see how deer have used it throughout the fall and winter.
I’m definitely enjoying every episode of this series. It directly relates to what I have going on in my own place.

When I first went hunting around 16 I was amazed that me and my buddy could walk in the woods turkey hunting or deer hunting and see squirrels all the time but the time we went out there to hunt squirrels the forest was so quiet at a young age I knew that’s just crazy how do they know I’m coming for them
I think its pretty awesome that you guys threw in a little birding this episode. I love about as much as I do hunting and fishing.

I don’t care what anyone thinks or says, I use to love easing through the woods with a little 410 piping bushy tails. I learned to do it at a very young age, and learned to excel at it, just easing through the woods, napping when you felt like it. And now taking my kids and just watching them and teaching them, taking them to a small area and telling them not to cross certain areas and just letting them go a little while keeping a distance and watching them learn is something magical. And I’m dying to try Steve’s buffalo hot legs recipe.

There are several good aspects to it, it has real world awareness Intelligence.
It appeals to my senses.
I've always enjoyed squirrel hunting, low budget low stress hunting
Up here in BC Canada it's the Grey Squirrel that is destroying the range of the pine squirrel. Pine Squirrels are actually protected by law against hunting (but not trapping) but the Grey Squirrel that was introduced and considered invasive is hunt-able 365 days a year and no license required.
They sure are tasty.

In wisconsin there is no limit and no strict season on pine/red squirrels. I always go after them. Good meat and a pretty fur.
I was taught that same thing about pine squirrels biting off nuts! I always thought it was insane that my dad told me that.

All I do is hunt squirrels. Abundant and good eating. Just gotta keep rotating properties to let em fill back in. This year has been slim pickings all around sadly. Wonder whats going on.
Loved it. I don’t know why but I always like squirrel hunting episodes the most. Maybe it’s because I’m so bad at it. The only times I ever get squirrels are when I’m deer hunting

Steve, my great grandpa always told my grandpa the same thing about Red Squirrels biting the nuts off Greys! I thought it was a family thing, but since we're all from MN I guess it must just be a regional squirrel hunting thing! Great shows guys!
I actually witnessed it in upstate NY, in the 90's, while deer hunting. I didn't believe it until I saw how aggressive they were to the larger gray squirrels. Crazy

Pine squirrels give alarm calls sooner than other squirrels and never give up squeaking until you leave, little goblins lol. Still eat them tho and sometimes their ruckus attracts other squirrels

I went squirrel hunting last weekend with the guys for 3 hrs and got nothing (usually I get 3-5 in that time). I got pissed and left on my motorcycle and one darted out and I ran it over.
The one thing MeatEater is missing is them showing what gun and caliber they are using for the hunt. Please add this to the show!
Rinella has said on podcast that when he meets a guy who asks him what caliber he shoots, he figures he's talking to more of a gun guy more than a hunter. He's seems pretty intentional about considering the context of the hunt that I'd wager they've made the purposeful decision to not highlight the firearm every show.
Andy Thompson Thats disappointing because as a novice hunter i would like to see the setup he has. In my eyes the segment would only be about 30 seconds. Just show what rifle he is using, what optic and in what caliber. I feel like it would open his show up to a wider audience and also have the option of sponsorships
But thats just it- They're hunters first, and seem to see the gun itself as only a tool within the context of the hunt. They may as well discuss their boot and sock strategy every episode if theyre going to highlight the gun. Fwiw, rinella has said he prefers his 300wm when it's appropriate for the game. Theyve partnered with weatherby so maybe hes taken a shine to those guns, or maybe thats just good business. He'd probably tell us both as novices to buy a cheaper gun and spend more money on tags if it would get us off RUclips and into the woods.
@@Doct0rEVille i think steve is using a CZ 527 in 22 lr mark seems to be using a 20 guage or a .410 shotgun, janis has a similar setup to steve

I feel like deer know when they're being hunted and not hunted. I've never seen a problem with a little small game before deer season. Hunt on I say!
