Well, tbf a gym leader should be a cakewalk for the champion and thats why only blue is stronger than Lance. But for a gameplay perspective it makes sense they should be at least slightly above Lance to make a Challenge.

Super fun game. Going to do a Nuzlock next. Thank you for fixing one of my favorite games and really making me feel like I was 9 again.
@@smithplayspokemon That'd be great! Do you plan on adding Kanto TMs as well? There are some gen 1 mons which would enjoy them a lot, like Kabutops with Submission. I feel like they could be an interesting way to fill Kanto with valuable items :D
@smithplayspokemon maybe not via hm directly like in later gens, but maybe by a tutor? I think that's how they did it in vc yellow, so it would make sense. Also having tutors for gen 1 tms would make sense as well. I know crystal has a tutoring system from the old man outside the casino, but I don't know of you could expand it this far. I know that this was intentional to create a competitive team for Green, but I recall Pokemon Special (manga) paying omage to Green's setup, where it explains that he specifically caught and grinded his Rhydon to pay tribute to the gym which had predominantly ground-type moves. Since then, it stuck with me as my head-canon, and I am sad to see Green no longer owning any Ground types in his gym fights in your rom T^T
Hey Smith. I think there is a massive issue with this hack in Silver’s team. I understand wanting to make him stronger, but removing his Sneasel takes out a super cool piece of environmental story-telling in the Johto games. Silver steals the Sneasel from the NPC that asks you to watch his Shuckle, as he’s fearful Silver will come back to steal that too. I think removing this is against the vision of the hack and borders closer on a difficulty hack, which is not what you intended. Thanks for taking the time to read this! I
When you fight him on Victory Road, he mentions having a change of heart in terms of his pokemon. Maybe a middle ground could be having the Sneasel in the fight after he steals it, but not having it in the Victory Road battle, implying he gave it back?
Blaine being so strong is actually in line with the Manga Canon were he was not only the Partner of Mewtwo but also a deciding factor in the war against the elite Four. He was the one fighting Lance to a standstill until Giovanni could appear and finish him (we dont really count Yellow here because he literally just toyed around with her). Blaine was an incredibly strong Trainer who had a deep bond with Mewtwo since both share the same DNA and a psychic link throught that. So this is an appropirate Power level for him

I finished my final battle with Red last night, and now i come here to thank you for this Romhack. I tried to revisit Pokemon Crystal in the Virtual Console, but didn't bother to finish it as soon as i began the unbalanced gym trio (Chuck, Jasmine and Brycen), i realized it hasn't aged well and decided to keep the memories of how i remembered it was when i was just a kid. A couple years later i ended up on one of your videos and got to know about the rom hack and decided to wait and see what you were cooking. As time passed, more eager to play i became until finally got to play it on my 3DS. The story fixes are also great and felt very official (i have a problem with romhacks because of how fanfiction they fell, i know that's the point, but i want to feel i'm playing the canon version), the level scalling were smooth, albeit a little challenging on some parts (fuck you Misty). The only problem i had with Legacy Crystal was that the Kanto badge counter was kinda off (the first 3 gym leaders i beat were Surge, Sabrina and Misty, but the game registered badges for Surge, Misty and Janine) and the "your mom" joke. But those are mere details that don't deter the masterpiece you created!

I always thought it’d be cool to have a set route to follow in gen 2 kanto. Start with surge, then you have to go to pewter via diglett cave, face Brock, work your way down to cinnabar to fight Blaine, go through seafoam islands to fight Janine, follow the east route up to lavender then through rock tunnel to fight Misty, go underground to celadon to fight Erika, then unlock saffron to fight Sabrina, then unlock the blue fight in viridian.

I do think it's slightly awkward for the immersion for the Kanto Gym Leaders to just be easily stronger than Lance. That implies that Lance was holding back, or that any of the Kanto leaders could just kick his ass.
@@ms-vq1os yeah, I have no issues with the gym leaders' respective 'full power' teams to be elite four level. It's just for the Kanto leaders to be stronger than Lance is kinda funny. Looks amazing and terrifying. I'm looking forward to it. My only complaint is that Blue didn't get an Eeveelution. In the anime he has an Eevee with him for a good bit, so I wanted to see that.
I had never even attempted to play a rom hack until Crystal Legacy. Thank you very much not only for improving a great game, but opening up the world of rom hacks for me.
Can't wait for the super secret oak ultra challenge after fighting red Joke aside but that would be funny. Yeah the gyn leaders in kanto were ok but should have been stronger as post Champion it should be hard
Hearing that Electrode is the fastest Pokemon in Gen 2 threw me for a loop and I had to look it up. Which lead to me looking at the top Pokemon for every stat in Gen 2. Shuckle has the highest defense AND special defense in this generation :3!
Shuckle has the highest defense and special defense period, mega steelix and aggron tie its defense but those are gone and have way less special defense, eternamax eternatus also has more defense but its not obtainable.
@@rocketterrier Other things you might find cool is that the only stats that have had a new holder for highest stats since gen 3 are the attacks held by both mega mewtwos and if we ignore megas the only stat that has changed highest holder since gen 3 is attack as kartana beats deoxys attack by a whole... 1 point
If you think about it, their levels made sense from an in universe standpoint. They're not supposed to be stronger than Lance, they're gym leaders, not the champion of the region. However, from a gameplay standpoint it doesn't make sense since they all essentially come after the "boss." It really ruins the flow.
It feels a little weird that both Blaine and Blue have Arcanine as their ace. While it makes sense Blue has all three of his team balancers from Red and Blue, and it makes sense Blaine keeps his ace from those games as well, the repetition feels a little... lazy? Blaine's team is fine the way it is (tho I'm a little sad he lost his Magcargo), the only thing that would need to change is the order. Swapping Arcanine and Moltres should be simple enough, since it still lets him use his old ace late into the fight.
I don’t know how you’d “fix” it lore-wise but man it always bummed me out that poor Blaine lost his home to a volcano😢. He’s so sad and still agrees to battle you but…he’s just an old man all alone. Him having Moltres makes it a little less depressing but…give my man a future😅
I really like decision to make Surge a rain user, but in battle against my heracross he decided to use thunder, it missed and heracross can one-shoted Surge's whole team with megahorn and cross chop
I think you should give wobbufeet mean look even tho it doesnt learn it normally. Switch stalling a wobufeet that doesnt trap you is a free way to kill it
I remember the first time that I ran into Misty playing Pokemon Gold for the first time and not knowing that Quagsire was immune to electric types, love that as a surprise trick for people back then.
1:29 technically ampharos is "featured" in the lighthouse quest for Jasmine in olivine, but I always found it strange you couldn't battle or catch it after curing it. But I guess it makes sense lore wise that you shouldn't remove the beacon from the light house...
Really enjoying this series. Good work with everything. Any thoughts on Surge getting a Jolteon with hidden power ice? Maybe give lantern rain dance and drop electrode for this? Or Brock having Macargo for some fire vs grass types? Steelix makes sense, because he had an onix, but it also looses rock typing, which seemed odd for the rock theming. Steelix is also associated with the steel gym.
Let's make the cheeky Blue even cheekier by him requiring not only the defeat of the other 7 Kanto leaders but also completing the Johto rematches and the potential Giovanni fight. Then his entire team is level 69 instead of half.
Had a lot of fun beating this hack, had a final team of Meganium, Scizor, Arcanine, Kingdra, Sneasel, and Aerodactyl. Somehow I lucked into beating Red first try with this team.
@@JayThoman not really what I’m saying. With the way this game works the point is that between Kanto and Johto there’s a specialist for each type except Dark. It’s cool that Blue gets to get a gym leader but I never liked that it came at the cost of replacing Giovanni’s Ground type specialty for a trainer that’s just well rounded
@MicoDossun I apologize. I understand what you mean then. Blue is the successor to Giovanni. That bothered me, too. I don't know why it took so long to have a dark type gym leader. Sorry for the misunderstanding of your comment
Great video! I have a gameplan that can potentially make Brock a bigger headache for players Brock should lead with either Omastar or Kabutops. They each have one move swapped for Icy Wind. If they cannot KO the enemy Pokemon, they can use Icy Wind to slow the opponent Pokemon. Golem comes in and explodes on the opponent. This will likely kill the main special attack counter on the player team. Aerodactyl bursts in and applies intense offensive pressure. Hopefully, Aerodactyl does enough damage to score a KO or two before going down. Next, Omastar or Kabutops comes and uses Icy Wind again. When they are KO'd, Tyranitar comes in. Tyranitar drops either Cruch or Thunderbolt for Headbutt. Tyranitar takes advantage of the lower opponent speed to land Headbutt or Rock Slide before the player attacks. Hopefully, Tyranitar can get a few flinches in so that he can power up using Curse or simply flinch the opponent into submission. Finally, the mighty Steelix come in. Steelix swaps out Rock Slide for Swagger. I know this is risky, but the reward is worth it. Special attackers are hurt by the increase in attack because the damage from attacking itself will increase. Strong physical attackers can potentially do severe damage to themselves. If they do manage to land an attack, Steelix has enough defense to survive the hit. Hopefully, the confusion buys enough time for Steelix to curse up and mop up the remaining Pokémon on the player's team.
I don’t know why people are complaining about the levels of these gym leaders being above lance’s when iirc the mainline pokemon series have instances of this as well. Also really like how most of the kanto gym leaders use more advanced late game strategies now that wouldn’t work as well early game such as weather.
Man at this point I want to see you make a game that takes you to Kanto, Johto and Hoen and collect all the badges. Nintendo has been lacking for to long on this.
I love how much you love Blaine’s team. That being said, three of his pokemon have fire blast, sunny day, and solar beam. Maybe it works better in combat? But also why do none have flamethrower or something?
Fire Blast is stronger and not too unreliable at 85% accuracy, so i guess he just went for power, especially given the 5 PP boost all the 120 BP moves received. As for Solar Beam, Grass beats Ground, Rock, and Water, so it's one the best complements for a Fire mon under sun.
He's running a sun team pre-drought and abilities, he needs multiple sunny days to maintain the weather for consistency, solar beam is objectively the best coverage move for a fire based team in a sun team, and fire blast is just better than flamethrower for any mon that can learn both.
@@Cr3zant This makes me think that a couple of interesting items Smith could add in future version to make some strategies more viable without changing Crystal at its core could probably be the Heat and Damp rocks.
I feel like HP isn't supposed to be something you choose/predict in universe A bunch of them just happening to have the right HP type for their purposes imo would feel cheap as hell
Pryce 5 was my only gym wipe in johto, but Misty absolutely wiped the floor with me like 5 times before I decided to save her for last before blue. Blaine got my a** first try as well. Really enjoyed Kanto and was surprised by the actual challenge. My team had no electric type and relied on meganium and thunderpunch Zam to cover most water encounters, and Misty just kept overwhelming me. I actually cheesed this fight a little bit (in my eyes anyway) by catching zapdos and bringing it to help me get over the hump.
What would've made the weather teams better would be use the Renegade Platinum strat and make it permanent inside the gym so you're not stuck with a turn to set it up. But Erika can keep Sunny Day as a move cause yeah it'd be too easy to sweep her. Also that would all Ninetails to have Extresensory which will allow it to deal with threats such as Machamp or Heracross. And Dragon Breath on Kingdra would help Misty cause she could paralyze your team.
The problem with Magcargo apart from it being very slow is that it's also very weak to Water and Ground. Magcargo would better serve the various firebreathers in Johto and Kanto than it would Blaine.
Can you pleasseeeeeee add a fight with professor Oak like intended in Gen 1? Maybe even make one for Elm too! How amazing would that be? I'm also still rooting for the building in Vermilion city to be completed in this hack to make it feel like Gen 2 in Kanto! It's about time that old man and his Machop finish that building!
Misty's Kingdra is a nice nod to the anime. Giving Brock a Crobat (he had on in the anime) would have been a great counter to a Grass type destroying Omastar/Kabutops. If you wanted to do a nod to the Pokemon Adventures Manga, you could have given Blaine Mewtwo. Blaine contributed some of his DNA to Mewtwo in the manga and the 2 were telepathically linked
I have a question regarding horseas: do wild horseas still have a chance to yield dragon scales? I'm trying to steal one off of a horsea but haven't gotten lucky whatsoever.
Nothing to do with the video, but yesterday i was casually nuzlocking Legacy Crystal and Bugsy's scyther decided end my run with 4 crit fury cutter PD: top rom hack bro, thanks for this gem ❤
I just have a question for blue which starter would you gave (one of the 3 eevelution )him and with what move ?🤔 thank you love your work make me want to play again 😁
Did you fix any of the typos in NPC dialogue? I noticed in Jrose's review that Professor Oak's dialogue read "truely" instead of "truly", the former being a common mistake.
Honesty, I'm trying to get the living dex on the rom hack, and I descovered that the pokédex is just broken, when you first catch a pokémon, it will only show the second page of the dex entry, and when you open the pokédex, and select a pokémon, it will only show the first page of the dex entry, no matter what. If it only happened to me, that means I'm unlucky.
Gyarados is a better fit for misty since she actually has one in the anime she even mega evolved it also blue probably should have Blastoise as his ace instead

Looks amazing and terrifying. I'm looking forward to it.
My only complaint is that Blue didn't get an Eeveelution. In the anime he has an Eevee with him for a good bit, so I wanted to see that.
Arcanine shouldn't be the ace for both Blaine and Blue. I'd probably just adjust and make Moltres Blaine's. Still feels repetitive though
8:56 cant believe you added the fairy type (/j)
Feels weird to have two Trainers in a row have Arcanine as their ace, but hey that's just how it is
Weather is so tied to the Gen 3 legends that it always surprises me to be reminded that it was introduced in Gen 2.
I had never even attempted to play a rom hack until Crystal Legacy. Thank you very much not only for improving a great game, but opening up the world of rom hacks for me.
Can't wait for the super secret oak ultra challenge after fighting red
Joke aside but that would be funny. Yeah the gyn leaders in kanto were ok but should have been stronger as post Champion it should be hard
YES ! Yes to that !
@@MaskedPlayer514 That's super cool :D I've been a Pokemon fan since 2005 but I've never really payed much attention to stats :'3
To follow the other weather teams you’ve set up, Brock feels like a great place to highlight the potential power of Sandstorm
You should add this to the Fixing Pokémon Crystal Series playlist.
I really like these changes, kinda reminds me of the design philosophy that Drayano uses in their hacks
Just started the rom hack last night. It’s so good!!!
feels weird having two gyms w arcanine aces, let alone in a row & at the end of the game
I really like decision to make Surge a rain user, but in battle against my heracross he decided to use thunder, it missed and heracross can one-shoted Surge's whole team with megahorn and cross chop
Well he's being called Civilian Surge on Gen 1 for a reason. He has a viable team now but come on, dude's always crap. 😂
I think you should give wobbufeet mean look even tho it doesnt learn it normally. Switch stalling a wobufeet that doesnt trap you is a free way to kill it
Well done sir! This is exactly the level of difficulty I wished the original Crystal version had.
LOL that surfing Raichu almost 1-shotted my Golem 😆 I didnt expect that surf
Really enjoying this series. Good work with everything.
Any thoughts on Surge getting a Jolteon with hidden power ice? Maybe give lantern rain dance and drop electrode for this?
Or Brock having Macargo for some fire vs grass types? Steelix makes sense, because he had an onix, but it also looses rock typing, which seemed odd for the rock theming. Steelix is also associated with the steel gym.
That moment when Janine can actually be a challenge. Hoo boy!
Also everyone out there, read description
Cant thank you enough for this hack. Im a stadium 2 child, so gen 2 is my favorite gen. But I never enjoyed nuzlocking gsc. This hack is awesome
Wouldnt it be awesome if we could take all these changes and see it played out on pokemon stadium 2? A man can dream
Would we be looking at Kanto and Johto leaders rematches too is that a possibility? Just food for thought because this is awesome.
It always bothered me that there was no Ground type representative in the Gen 2 gyms and now you’ve removed Blue’s only Ground type
Misty now has a Quagsire(water/ground). Brock's Graveler and Onix have evolved into Golem(rock/ground) and Steelix(steel/ground) respectively
@@JayThoman all good, no anger here. We’re all just here to talk about Pokémon
@@JayThoman The entire Geodude line is rock/ground, and Onix is also rock/ground. Your comment makes absolutely no sense.
0:47 Bro knew what he was doing💀
Great video! I have a gameplan that can potentially make Brock a bigger headache for players
Brock should lead with either Omastar or Kabutops. Hopefully, the confusion buys enough time for Steelix to curse up and mop up the remaining Pokémon on the player's team.
you have organized the kanto gyms into the first KANTONIAN EMPIRE
I don’t know why people are complaining about the levels of these gym leaders being above lance’s when iirc the mainline pokemon series have instances of this as well. Also really like how most of the kanto gym leaders use more advanced late game strategies now that wouldn’t work as well early game such as weather.
Sabrina's Wobbuffet was an absolute menace.
Suuper happy with these updates! Good work!
Man at this point I want to see you make a game that takes you to Kanto, Johto and Hoen and collect all the badges. Nintendo has been lacking for to long on this.
Was really waiting for this vid
7:03 Janine is literally the newest gym leader in the indigo league, she should be the 23rd strongest trainer in the game when including rematches
Can we get the chance to rebattle them? I guess that would mean Blaine & Blue would need another addition to their teams for the rebattle but
Blue would find it easy to replace Articuno though, as he could just bring his Pidgeot or Rhydon back.
6:58 what's the name of music?
I love how much you love Blaine’s team.
That being said, three of his pokemon have fire blast, sunny day, and solar beam.
Maybe it works better in combat? But also why do none have flamethrower or something?
Fire Blast is stronger and not too unreliable at 85% accuracy, so i guess he just went for power, especially given the 5 PP boost all the 120 BP moves received. As for Solar Beam, Grass beats Ground, Rock, and Water, so it's one the best complements for a Fire mon under sun.
He's running a sun team pre-drought and abilities, he needs multiple sunny days to maintain the weather for consistency, solar beam is objectively the best coverage move for a fire based team in a sun team, and fire blast is just better than flamethrower for any mon that can learn both.
yeah fair enough
@@Cr3zant This makes me think that a couple of interesting items Smith could add in future version to make some strategies more viable without changing Crystal at its core could probably be the Heat and Damp rocks.
Goated video as always.
Would you consider adding hidden power to some boss trainers’ Pokémon or do you think that would make the game more difficult than you’d like?
I feel like HP isn't supposed to be something you choose/predict in universe
A bunch of them just happening to have the right HP type for their purposes imo would feel cheap as hell
Tyranitar and Arcanine with curse. By god, YOU ARE A MONSTER.
I like it :)
I definitely like these buffs. It always was a let down that the Kanto leaders were under leveled and barely a challenge to the battles before them.
It would be cool if you could battle against Lorelei and Agatha, maybe hidden somewhere in Kanto, and when defeated give you some rare item or TM
I can see you dude as the fire type gym leader love this video too.
Grats on the Raid sponsor. I know they pay pretty well 👍
Thanks for the cool rom hack
7:24 what’s the music that’s playing here?
A much needed fix to these gym leaders. THANK YOU 🙌
I would have adjusted Blaine to have a Magcargo instead of ninetails. Since no other person showcases it and it is a new addition from johto.
Lance's lead Electrode will know "Rain bounce"
Wait, Amphy wasn't on Jasmine's team?
Nice. Just to clarify. You did change Thunders accuracy in the rain. That was a change made in Gen 4, that's why I'm a bit confused
I have a question regarding horseas: do wild horseas still have a chance to yield dragon scales? I'm trying to steal one off of a horsea but haven't gotten lucky whatsoever.
Nothing to do with the video, but yesterday i was casually nuzlocking Legacy Crystal and Bugsy's scyther decided end my run with 4 crit fury cutter
PD: top rom hack bro, thanks for this gem ❤
Would you consider adding later gen evolutions for gen 2 pokes? Such as Weavile for Sneasel, etc
Nope, no new Pokémon in this series of ROMhacks.
I just have a question for blue which starter would you gave (one of the 3 eevelution )him and with what move ?🤔 thank you love your work make me want to play again 😁
The end game we always wanted. Or atleast that I always wanted.
are the IVs of the trainers documented and are they all maxed IVs?
Great work!
Did you fix any of the typos in NPC dialogue? I noticed in Jrose's review that Professor Oak's dialogue read "truely" instead of "truly", the former being a common mistake.
You gave Erika's victribil swords dance but sludge bomb and giga drain are special. I assume tour keeping poison as physical?
All Poison-type attacks remain physical. The only changes were making Dark-type attacks physical and Ghost-type attacks special.
Thankyou for this rom 💙, you should have given Misty a Seadra instead of Critdra mahn 🎉🎉😂
Man pour one out for the dugtrio in this video 😂
Bring back blue’s pigeot. That was his ace
