I am 50 and have been a drummer since I was 8, but your explanation of a paradiddle, with the "Diddle" falling on the "RR" or "LL" hand has just taught me the easiest way to remember how\what I am doing\playing. Even a old dog CAN learn a new trick! Thanks for that!
I am a guitarist that gets tired of drum loops. I bought a Roland SPD-30, and am having the time of my life trying to learn and play to my own music. I bought what I understand to be 'the book' on stick control, but what you just showed me has been the best lesson so far. Thank you. You are terrific!
Used to be a drummer in a pipe band. Paradiddles were one of the first rudiments we learned (next to the roll!). They were used constantly thru out the music. Then added flams, accents, drags to REALLY make it interesting. Those days are long past me but still catch myself unconsciously playing them while listening to music while driving!!
Im a guitar player who just started playing drums. Searching through youtube I have found it difficult to find good lessons until I ran into the drum Professor. In my opinion he is the best teacher around. Big thank you to you brother! Thank you for doing what you do! 🤙
Wow being playing that for ever >>> ty for taking me back to the basics Tee hee lol that was the very first thing I was taught when I just was a lil one falling asleep in front of the bass drum as my Fathers band The TeePee Creepers would be practicing
Nicely done. I too was taught by a DIC instructor. He was an absolutely amazing teacher and gave me an incredible foundation of drumming knowledge that I still use today.
My instructor, back when I was 15 back in 1984, taught me the paradiddle by teaching me how to play Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly. He said Jerry Allison played it with a whipping down/accent stroke on the R and the L is an UPWARD tap stroke followed by 2 downard RR's. The idea behind the upstroke on the L was to no only help with the coordination by ensuring no "breaks" and smoother transistions between the sticking but also to provide a softer stroke following the accent on the first note. The successive RR's would also be soft strokes. The same principal follows on the LRLL with R being an upstroke. I suppose there's not wrong way to learn this rudiment and it is tricky to master. .
Thanks so much. I just started playing drums and was trying to look up paradiddles and all the tutorials are like, "Just practice this: BLEARGH!" Leaving me wondering, "Okay, how do I get my hands to do that?" "Pa-Ra-Did-Dle" makes so much more sense now. THAT I can practice.
have always love rudiments..still use the Stone book "Stick Control" all rudiments are buried in the exercises...great exercise is a few bars of single para to double para to triple para...good video ♫♫
Holy sh!%! I was just about to right almost verbatim what the guy below me did lol 😂 Yeah thanks for that brotha. Great lesson man. Appreciate ya👊🏻 I’ve avoided the paradiddle like the plague for decades but now when I get home tonight I’m going to break it down like you showed and grind out some practice time on this. I can play them just have a very low ceiling tempo wise. I’m hoping this will get me over the hump. Thanks again 🙏🏻👊🏻👍🏻
haha avoiding like the plague!! Got a laugh on that one! I know exactly what you mean haha.... doing paradiddles this way makes it more fun! Plus you have a vision of what to do and how to practice. let me know how you progress with them!
Just discovered this channel and immediately subscribed :). You seem to be a honest, down to earth guy. Not about being fancy or (too) impressive. Never had lessons; back in the days when I started playing, internet wasnt common (age 38). The younger ones can develop themselves really fast; perhaps even Too fast by imitation ;). Cheers from the Netherlands.
wow .....thank you , you have literally just taught me to paradiddle.. at full speed and at ease more to the point ...so chuffed thanks again , I've just subscribed keep 'em coming.merry Xmas
This is by far the best explanation of doing the parididdle. I’ve only been playing for 1 year. Took 3 months worth of lessons. They never explained it like this. I need to get my speed and rudiments up to par. I play for my church and need to get better. There are so many rudiments to learn. Any guidance on which one to focus on? Thanks!
Thanks brother, the rudiments just dazzle people. It's so much fun. if there's anything more fun than drums, surfing or sex, i haven't found it. Thanks for helping me get better.
I love the content here, and you clearly know your rudiments. This is the first video I have seen of yours so I don't yet know if you've made any modifications to your video recording process, so I may be a little late with this suggestion...but...it sure would be nice to see your foot work as you switch the right hand for the right foot. Also, if you could find some way in the recording of the drum audio to isolate the sounds of your snare from your hi-hat, it would aide in the listeners ability to distinguish the subtly of your rhythm. To my ears they blend together so much it was difficult to hear the distinction between the two... I really like your teaching style!
Thanks so much for your response! I have upgraded audio and added a camera for my foot view. Its still a work in progress and will continuing to upgrade the audio quality.
Hi! I highly recommend you meeting with me in a FREE live drum lesson... email me at jeremy@thedrumprofessor.com .. I look forward to hearing from you!
I am a drummer of 48 years who never really learned the basic rudiments. I'm 58 now and only recently I finally have a strong desire to learn the rudiments to finally take my drum playing to the next level. The average person hears me on the drum set and thinks I'm an excellent drummer I know I've been stuck at the Mediocre Level all these years because I never took the time to learn the basic rudiments and apply them to my drum playing. I read drum music but because I never really learned the rudiments, ALL THESE YEARS I held myself back from becoming a well-rounded, an excellent drummer.
@@E7MusicSchool Thanks! I'm currently focusing on the Paradiddle rudiments. I'm having trouble getting my speed up while playing the paradiddles. Is there a way to increase my speed?
I was literally just working with a student on the exact same thing! yes there are some amazingly helpful exercises / techniques for that, but I'd have to show you can't really explain it. :) I'm happy to help you with this, drop me an email if you'd like to have a free lesson!
hello professor, just started on drums, enjoyed this video! Why does negative criticism stand out more than positive criticism? anyway, great vid, new sub!
Any one handed exercises or simple tips that will help speed up my left hand/build wrist strength? I've just started learning drums a couple of days ago but have been tapping on random things(with my hands) for a long time. And my right hand is wayyy faster than my left because of it lol. Btw your videos are so great!! You make learning very easy and fun. And I will definitely be practicing these paradiddle rudiments a lot. Seems like it will be very helpful for getting good. Thank you!!
I started the drums last June. And of course the basics that come with it. Thank you for his explanations. My left hand is not precise it's a problem. What to do ?

So Sorry I just now saw this!! in blast beats you are usually hitting the high hat and snare at the same time. If you use flams it could sound a bit off time.
