  • Political philosopher Steve McIntosh explains how Americans can overcome hyper-partisanship by more skillfully managing the polarity between liberal values and conservative values. Over the past few decades a promising theoretical perspective has arisen that sheds new light on the forces that cause political polarization. This way to think about conflict, known as "polarity theory," posits that certain types of polar opposition are actually generators of value that, when effectively managed, can build agreement and produce meaningful political progress.
This is the second video in Steve's “5-minute” RUclips series. The first 5-minute video in the series, "Developmental Politics Simplified in 5-Minutes," can be watched at this link: • Developmental Politics...
Working with the value-creating potential of polarities is a central theme of Steve’ book, "Developmental Politics-How America Can Grow Into a Better Version of Itself." The book can be ordered on Amazon at this link: www.amazon.com/Developmental-...

The most important lesson that I learned from Computer Security is the attacker/defender mindset. You can not be a security expert without learning to think from attacker's side, and you cannot be a competent hacker without thinking of how the other side are gonna defend. Learning and respecting the other side is always the first step to mutual understanding, no matter what the field of study is.

Your point about the difference between solving a problem vs managing a system reminds me of my axial motto, which is "How to be?" (instead of the perennially tail-chasing "To be, or not to be?") Instead of "Do I agree with with Stephen?" it becomes "How do I agree with Stephen?" Is there a more crucial orientation through the English language? :)

People get into political debates because their intention is to prove somebody wrong. If people went into these discussions with the goal of learning something about the other side then things would be better. It’s not a competition people.

From Twitter: "This seems so obvious when you hear it. And yet if everyone understood it, it would change everything."

Thank you Steve, this is very clear! I'd love to hear you speak more about the "interdependence" of values! And I will share it with my volunteer colleagues at Citizens' Climate Lobby - this is right up our alley and we can't hear or say it enough.

No matter how much you disagree with someone, remember that we are all human beings. No one believes an argument for no reason, try to see where they are coming from. We need to be able to get along in order to have a functional society.

My main interest is in mathematically formalizing everything Stephen McIntosh says as well as every human thought
as formal abstract assertions of what positives & negative each individual thinks about other events,
keeping accounting of/tracking of what events others cause, and logical inconsistencies in those beliefs about the positive/negative of events as set members of other sets of events.
e.g. set of all illegal events, complement set of all legal events
set of all events maximizing nationalism
set of all events maximizing nationalism only for China
set of all events maximizing nationalism only for Canada
set of all events maximizing nationalism only for USA
set of all events maximizing nationalism only for Mexicao
    .....

Well, it's a damn hard problem. Russell's paradox proves the impossibility of clear defined set theory, and by adding different cardinality to the concept of infinite just makes the whole thing much more confusing. Plus, it's impossible to express abstract concepts like love and hate to measure public interest in form of mathematics without constructing an accurate brain mapping of everyone in atom level, which is very, very difficult based on the number of machines/computers in the world not counting the number of microprocessors is no longer growing exponentially. Last but not least, for thousands of years, not matter how smart you are, there is no proof whether the world is deterministic or non-deterministic. That's why nihilists were born.
But if you are willing to construct mathematical models to approximate or predict trending events, welcome to the world of machine learning :)

Great insights! Never heard it from the perspective of 2 opposing positives, which makes a lot of sense. But I think it's just as important to identify the bad faith actors that misrepresent positive values for their own gain.

Positive polarity reminds me of the value pluralism of Isiah Berlin.
