Brands just started, within the last 10-15 years, making clothes that NBA players can actually fit into. It’s more fun getting dressed when there are options you can fit.
Sociology of taste and style, you're a scholar young man! Other topics to consider Boxer Jack Johnson as a fashion dandy, Althea Gibson and Satchel Paige all as fashion icons. Regional differences in the dope-boy aesthetic of 1980s say between DC, Harlem, Detroit, and Chicago, and contrast this with the go go 80s yuppie Patrick Bateman style Burberry vs FILA and yet maybe Gucci in between. You can tell I'm an old geezer but you got me thinking.
I'm happy drew is finally talking about NBA, I know drew is a hooper at heart... or at least I think so. You should do a whole episode about say SGAs fashion, ALD and old money, or mens vs women's fashion and how women have such a wider horizon in what they can wear... Just some of my thoughts. IMO you are the best fashion RUclipsr on RUclips...
They dress the way they do because they work with stylist. In my opinion those opportunities should be given to other people that need more exposure, NBA players are already as famous as it gets.
Black NBA players are not just African Americans. You could have just said black. E.g. Black Canadians (like SGA) are not African American, most are Caribbean-Canadian. There are also a good amount of African and Caribbean players as well.
there are definitely tons of afro-european and african born players in the nba today. the majority of carribean athletes are of african descent. sga is of african descent born in the americas.
The data is pulled directly from Statista and Wikipedia, I agree being black in the NBA doesn’t just mean you’re African American but I don’t know if the data is that specific
One very important semantic argument on this would be whether it’s their actual style or the work of a stylist. If it’s a stylist then you lose the right to be called stylish, imo.
How many of the players today have stylists or advisors, in a time where personal brands are so important from a wealth generation point of view? I doubt Walt Frazier, Rodman or AI ever went down that route but today’s stars sometimes seem a bit too styled, a little bit clinical. Even Ben Simmons big jumper felt like he was trying too hard IMO…. but at least we got to see Chuck roast the fit!
When I think of NBA athletes, I don't necessarily think of them as having great style. Instead, I see them as individuals with money, stylists, and brand deals. If you think about athletes you knew in high school or college, did they really have style? Truthfully, probably not.
I've never put much thought behind it as basketball is not popular in most countries including my own. The only players that have any name recognition would be Shaquille O'Neal for his films in the 90's, Michael Jordan for his shoes and Dennis Rodman for is uniqueness from the way he dresses to his friendship with Kim Jong Un. I figure the way they dress is a mix of wanting to show their wealth and that they now have enough money to get clothing made for them, as I think most of them would have struggled in their childhoods/teens as they are mostly very tall.
I think the NBA is the only sport the cares about the individual. Every other major American sport is defined by certain teams and we talk about the prestige of the team. The NBA is the sport that allows you always see a player’s face and we only care about certain teams because of the players on them. Plenty of teams have been relevant because of one guy and they guy is unique and therefore they get to be known by their uniqueness.
Most of the players are paid to wear those pre game outfits right? I was hoping that would be explained in the video. I don’t doubt the players are stylish in their own right but it can come off as inauthentic. Also obvious the idea is to sell to people when players are walking out in straight off the runway pieces. It’s just a new generation I guess..
Could never agree with Westbrook being aligned with Rodman given the era and structure of gender talks and masculinity. The only similarity I see is bold colors. Rodman was during an era before the word “professionalism” was challenged. When a black man sexuality had to align with their sartorial choices. He was void of these rules and voices. I also find it interesting where you chose to say “black” vs “African- Americans”. Great video though.
why do you not say European American? and on the term latino can we stop using that.. people called those terms can be any of the terms you mentioned with many being mixed or a certain race depending on the country. not here to shame just educate bro. big fan of your vids
@@DrewJoiner definitely outdated data based on ignorance. not your fault, I appreciate your response and understand your position thank you have a blessed one brotha

Finally, I'm glad someone decided to talk about this topic. Surprised this isn't discussed more.
loved this! could talk about the intersectionality of race, basketball, and fashion forever

I’m too short to ever care about what NBA guys wear but now I will at least use them for inspo
I like that I can reference tall, lanky players outfits for my own style. Too bad I can't afford the brands they rock 😅
Love the video essay but I miss seeing drew
