This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Aristotle's work, the Metaphysics and examines his discussion in book 1 about the difference between different modes of understanding matters. On the one side, there is "experience" (empeiria), which is built up from memory and practical experience, and which grasps the particulars, but not the universal. On the other side, there is art (techne) and science (episteme), which a person who possesses can teach effectively, and which employs and grasps the universals.

Thank you, you explain it wonderfully!
You're very welcome!
Helped me so much with my readings, thank you
You're very welcome!
You are a good man Charlie Brown.
The Universal and the Particular.
From one comes many.
From experience comes knowledge.
From one comes contradiction.
I really would love to have a Scotch with you one day.
Very helpful thank you!
You're welcome!
excellent lecture
Thanks!
Thank you sir. I understand better and its very clear
Glad it was helpful for you!
In Chuck Klosterman’s “The Most Advanced Actor In The Universe” Val Kilmer discussed in his interview that he knows what it is like to be Jim Morrison more than Jim ever did. Would this be an example of techni being a greater knowledge than emperia?
Perhaps so. Or perhaps it's still just emperia, since it draws on a lot of particulars. For Aristotle, it would depend on how much of Kilmer's knowledge is genuine universals
I don’t understand why this can’t be in plain thoughts like they did prior to 1700. 😉
No idea what you’re trying to say here
@@GregoryBSadler From my understanding Aristotle was known as a veiled writer. Which sent some on the path of actually attempting to create gold. I believe that if masonry, metaphysics and other sciences were taught as one whole subject it would be less transmutable. The cloud would no longer be above the sanctuary:) (please appreciate my attempt on a Plato on words)
Your understanding is wrong, so you’ll want to get rid of whatever source you drew it from. Then clear your head, start again, and reread
@@GregoryBSadler What do you suggest. I really appreciate your time.
@@erikamerriweather3726 I already made my suggestion
