It’s also worth mentioning that Mariah flat out seems scared to belt…when she’s talking or shouting at the fans she can hit a c5 with good technique but when she goes to sing her she gets super tense and scared to death because from the condition her voice was in and seeing some attempts she did last year she can belt higher than shown, she just seems scared to push above C#5
Im going to assume that it's bc how inconcistent her voice can be. there's a video of her singing make it happen in 2018 and all C#5 attemps came with different results despite being on the same line lol
And pair that with menopause it’s even more scary for her, my 64 year old grandma can belt a phrased F5 but she says in her 50s when menopause was first starting her voice was always dry, the voice is weird, Mariah is probably gonna have to somehow get used to her “menopausal voice” before we get more live stuff
Me too, i was alwyas excited to see her show,, to see what improvisation she will do, but not anymore, I'm bored with the same pre-record on every song
She can definitely still get up there. But it seems like shes scared of her voice being pushed too hard. Only she knows the condition of her voice after all, but there seems to be an element of insecurity. I mean look at how tense she gets when doing the little live parts in some of her recent shows. Ill be there for example; that Bb4 she tries to do is very inconsistent and its not a high note for her at all. But she gets so tense that she sets her self up for failure. Her recent pre recorded tracks sound good tho. Her recent tone has been good. Its just singing live that seems to mske her tense.
I think your opinions in this video are extremely good and with the evidence you provided it makes sense! we do need to hear her live voice more in order to further understand if its the level that she left off before hand
Even though Mariah always acts like she doesn’t know much about her voice technically and doesn't even care about how high she can sing, as an Aries, I think she actually knows very well. She might have even recorded how high and how low she could sing in the '90s or each era, and this might now haunt her regarding her vocal insecurities as time goes by. If I could, I really would like to sit next to her and tell her that all of her fans don’t care about how high or how low she can sing anymore. She’s proven herself a million times as a vocal beast with an angelic voice, and because of that, she can lower her songs as much as she’s comfortable and sing them live because one thing that remains is that no one on planet Earth has the beautiful tone that she has. We love her voice and always will, even if there are no high notes anymore.
Not even as an aries, simply as a perfectionist. I know she struggles with the fact her voice has changed over the years but I also believe she holds herself back a lot in the live setting. But with how scrutinized shes been over the years can you really blame her for wanting to be perfect and lip syncing instead?
Yes - THIS! I think she is very well aware her voice is not Debutriah nor Music Box Mariah or TEOM Mariah anymore, and the fans know that. We don't really care anymore how high she can sing, or if she can still hit the "insiiiiiide" notes of Emotions anymore. Just give us LIVE vocals, crappy notes, flat notes, off key vocals, lowered keys... She's been held to such a high standard for years on end, and the pressure is probably too much.
She doesn't even have that tone anymore though. Almost everything from her voice is gone. The agility, the range, the clarity. The only thing she has left is that musicality and ability to create vocal layerings and soundscapes in the studio. She should have gave up live singing over a decade ago and just focused on albums
The main problem is the fact that she doesn't seem to have worked with a vocal coach, if at all.(correct me if i'm wrong) If she did (as in consistently, not on and off), i feel like her vocal condition would've been far more consistent and prolonged despite everything that went in her career/life. IMO with vocal coaching, she would be able to reach G5 comfortably, at least throughout her early 30s
40s though, her voice would probably lower naturally by that point, but still, with vocal coaching, i feel F5/F#5 would still be easily accessible for her
yeah I think the rare times when she's in her best voice post-prime gives us glimpses of how she could have sounded more consistently, so like Dec. 2003 and Dec. 2014. Her range would still have definitely diminished/gotten deeper naturally but it wouldn't have been nearly as drastic. Like basically she would have been able to realize her studio potential live. In the 90s she might have been sustaining G5s and in the 2010s still F5s pretty regularly
@@withyouonemogenthere is a massive difference between losing some range with age and having your voice completely deteriorate. One of those things is normal and the other isn’t
@Bluerock121 I mean, she always sings at the top of her range with less-than-favorable vocal technique (pulling up chest voice almost all the time, overuse of whistle register, head voice being her weakest register etc.), all while having nodules + everything that went on in her life. With all of that, I'm not surprised, to be honest, at how much she's lost range-wise.
Another thing is that it's way more noticeable when she loses even a semitone of belting range because all of her songs are so high. If she had a catalogue more like Whitney's (more mid-belts), she could probably cover it up better.
@@ZUN4812The actual problem in Mariah's songs is lack of middle notes. Or example, Emotions casually switches between 3rd octave and 5th octave through out the song with very little middle notes. Lowering the key wouldn't really help much since she has to deal with the lows too. If the song is Hero Mariah could just lower the key but for Emotions, Make It Happen and many more songs she just couldn't lower the key, but to sing with less range (or dodge with falsetto/head voice).
Her recent studio vocals are actually kinda shocking since she lowkey is singing her a** off but seems terrified to go into the 5th octave on stage. Some examples: yes, and? remix sees her holding D5's and going up to F5 in the prechorus, Made For Me remix has her doing the entire chorus upper harmony in the 5th octave up to Eb5
Mariah in the studio obviously has better vocals. She can dress in more confortable shoes, clothes, sit down, and close her eyes to focus on those notes. Unfortuately she is nervous to do them on stage due to consistency. I can think of the fake media smearing her saying "MC's vocals are gone due to Patricia, Allison, Bryan. MC's career is over, MC's voice gone, etc..." Which of course if not true but lies does make them money. This is why Mariah decides to fully lip her own recent studio vocals instead.
@@TimothiWin she had to. I find it impossible for her voice to be so heavy and meaty live, and so bright and chipmunky in the studio. Caution was the last time she kept the production real. Everything after tho...
@@SPexHoS2137 *sadly, I agree. it seems like all we are even going to get from her these days is smoke & mirrors; 99% of everything lipped.. with subtle false advertising by actually singing live in the videos promoting her concerts/shows. lol this is my thing; singing is something that is done from the soul... Mariah is already rich. if she literally cannot sing live anymore, why even bother pretending? the old Mariah loved to sing, would never lip VOL. ETC. MAKES me truly wonder where her head is at, it also seems like she is heavily medicated. ONE of my theories: when Mariah was singing live in 2022 & sounding super bad, but then again actually live, she was going against 'orders' & they medicated her after that in order to get her to keep performing but to not sing & just lip. maybe she wasnt taking her bipolar meds (something I truly believe is mis-diagnosed to big celebrities so they can use it as a tool to control them when they need to etc). its almost bizarre, like shes two different people, if you compare her behavior/energy/body language now vs her stage presence during her christmas shows & others during 2022 etc... its not normal to have 2 extremely different personalities like that. what im trying to say it, ONE is the REAL Mariah, THE OTHER is the drugged one to keep docile, submissive & to prevent her from singing live + I think she is depressed DUE to the situation & the fact that she vocally cant sing like she used to & has now lipped songs she wouldve never 7 years ago etc... maybe 'those in power' knew if she kept opting to sing live, shed lose all of her listeners and people wanting to see her live due to how drastically her voice has deteriorated.. IDK.. this industry is wicked.. britney, kanye told us... what do u think? theres definitely something going on where her true personality is being stifled & dimmed. it seems very eerie. yea, I went off the deep end lol*
Caution is a mystery to me, because her voice was great in a lot of aspects, but at the same time her range lowered drastically, maybe it was because of her technique? Or her voice lowered more in 1 year?
@@taygishkin but she was still comfortably belting out E5s in 2017 and then barely got up to that note in 2018. Something age related wouldn't have that drastic of an effect so quickly😭
Not just about her voice, her contribution to the Music industry, her amazing beautiful quality songs, her being grateful to her fans to say the least are important.
there's like so much shame and insecurity with her vocal condition- I'm not even sure she talks about it that much with people close to her. And like her raising keys and all this stuff is her like mentally not wanting to except her changed voice. How can she be transparent to us if she isn't transparent with herself
I know there’s the whole thing with her going higher in the studio than live. As a rough estimate, I’d say her studio range is her live range +1 semitone: so 90s ceiling was a G#5, 2000s a G5, early 2010s an F#5, late 2010s an F5, and now an E5/F5. I guess she just has more ease/technique is better in the studio.
@@guytoledano7215 I think those were pitched up G5s? But also her voice might have not fully lowered yet by the time she recorded saving grace in 2002 so she could have still had a 90s level of ease in the G5-G#5 range.
She hit a few F#5s in mid 2010s In JTTW 2015 she went sharp In a happy birthday song in 2014 And likely some others i missed And vocal range is tricky with someone that has nodules. What they’re able to do in studio will vastly differ from what they’re able to do most of the time live. Even singers without nodules can sing higher more consistently in studio than live since it’s a more relaxed environment where you can do as many takes as you want to stitch a final product together. There’s even a supposed G5 in When Christmas Comes at beacon theatre 2014. I personally don’t count it as it sounds lipped, but most people agree it’s live and hitting it over the track. But let’s say for example, if Mariah’s highest belts are an F#5 in the 2010s, those were likely not on her best days, so combine going into the studio on her best days, which of course she’d choose to do, days we don’t get to hear live since her nodules act up over 90% of the time, AND being in a relaxed environment with countless attempts, and there’s really no reason to believe she can’t do G#5s or even an A5 or 2 in studio. I don’t have nodules, but even I can’t belt as high live as I can in studio cuz I’m horrendously nervous live. In studio I can hit 2-3 notes higher cuz I’m a lot more relaxed and can plan my voice accordingly to do that. It’s a lot more difficult to replicate that live, especially for singers that suffer from nerves and nodules like Mariah does.
it's funny to me cause she's so much more scared/inconsistent when attempting "lord knows" Eb5. I feel like Mariah has mental ideas of how difficult certain attempts are, and since she has been dodging the E5/Eb5 since the 90s she probably considers if a pretty difficult attempt. Because of her lack of vocal training she's reliant on muscle memory and I think this plays into that.
She has definitely lost some of her belting range, and we can't do anything about it, the only thing she needs to do now is to get a vocal coach and learn how to mix her belts instead of using her full chest voice, the weight is too much for her chest to carry.
Also idk right now i dont even wanna criticise anything about her voice or lipping :/ just wanna see her get the spark back in her eyes again because it honestly is concerning she does NOT seem herself and we know she's probably going through it 😔 like that one make it happen performance...
She might be going through a bipolar depressive phase. She did break with Tanaka like last year which is when it seemed to have started. Maybe shes still sad abt that. And i mean losing two family members cant be easy for her either.
@@instrumentsmrti Mariah in a recent interview stated how when lambs sing back to her in the shows, she feels happy and content. There were 110k+ fans in her recent Rio show in Brasil, plus millons watching at home live, something JFlop could never do.
Mariah definitely needs to rest and heal. She just lost her mom and sister (that she had such tumultuous relationships with initially anyways) *on the same day* I’m just praying Mimi makes it through the hard times. I want the lord to tell her how to stop the rain :(
In my humble opinion, I think her voice’s true prime was Charmbracelet. Vocal pedagogy states that most voices don’t enter their prime and really settle to the early to mid 30s and as far as vocals, from Glitter through the end of Charmbracelet brought us some of the most consistent and gorgeous vocals and really obvious tessitura. Since then, the two kids and heavy touring along with vocal folds that have been subjected to nodules would’ve no doubt began to scar internally which almost always results in loss of range and flexibility which we’ve undoubtedly heard more recently. Since she’s always been a resourceful and smart singer, she’s learned to navigate around it but it’s just the reality of the human voice. She got away with some INCREDIBLE things in the 90s that likely also contributed to a bit of the damage we’re hearing today, but by no means is her instrument bad or unusable. We just have to understand that the voice will be forever changing and different and give her the grace and flowers she’s earned and deserved! Long live Mariah!☺️
I think there's something all of us Lambs need to keep in mind when referring to Mariah's perceived lack of interest in singing live and delivering energetic performances... When Mariah performs, it’s not that she doesn’t want to be on that stage-it's the exact opposite. She has an undeniable passion for music and a deep desire to connect with her audience. The frustration we see in her expressions isn’t a reflection of disinterest; it’s a profound struggle with her own limitations. She desperately wants to deliver the powerful, soaring vocals that fans have cherished for decades, but the reality is that she can’t always execute it the way she envisions. That’s the heartbreaking tension that comes through in her performances. It’s not “I don’t want to be here”; it’s “I want to be here, but I can’t do what I need to do.” This internal battle creates an emotional complexity that many fans might not fully grasp. The despair on her face is a window into that conflict-she longs to share her gift but feels constrained by her voice’s unpredictability. Each performance is a mix of hope and anxiety, where she knows she can reach those high notes but is painfully aware of the risk involved. By opting to lip-sync to pre-recorded vocals, she’s not choosing to disengage; she’s trying to protect her artistry and ensure that the experience remains enjoyable for her fans. It’s a tough decision that comes from a place of self-awareness and love for her craft. She wants to give her best, and when she can’t, it’s a source of real frustration and sorrow for her. I think understanding this context helps us appreciate the emotional weight behind her performances. Mariah is still the artist we admire; she’s just navigating a challenging chapter in her career. The desire to sing is still there-intact and vibrant-but her vocal limitations are right there, harmonizing with her desire to sing...often competing for lead.
I do believe her drinking and partying hard habits play a huge part in this... even if she has stopped by now, it would eventually take its toll on her voice. I know she's not a machine and had to enjoy her life and success, of course (Also, unlike many professional singers, I remember she was once asked, late 90's or early 2000's, what she would do before a concert in order to warm up, and she was like "nothing" lol, "maybe sing to the radio...". I was then concerned because if you wish longevity and to keep your voice healthy you MUST treat your voice the same way an athlete treats their body. Many singers who have had a long career always mention how disciplined and careful they always had to be with their voices and lifestyle in general).
Wow this is so well done, I think you’re very accurate with how her range has lowered. It’s fascinating that in 2010 you can already hear the lowering from 2008 F5s attempts, I think pregnancy hormones+ lifestyle changes probably caused this.
Thanks! And yeah we're so lucky we got that 2008 performance right probably at the point before her voice was lowering again. If it had been 2009 Christmas I feel like she would might have lipped the F5s
It seems like her vocal cords doesn’t allow air to pass through for a period of time now. It closes up. So now she hits a quick run or holds a note for 1 to 4 seconds in her low or mid range. Any high notes are only held for half or a whole second.
Honestly all the comments about bipolar are very real. As someone who struggles with bipolar depression, and recently changed all my mood and depression medication, I know the feeling. I feel like a completely different person sometimes; less focused, less confident, and I feel like creatively in terms of music I have lost a lot of interest where I used to be so excited to make it. This could very well be what’s going on with Mariah, and all we can do is continue to hope the best for her that she one day will regain that spark for music and singing again.
It’s also down to confidence age etc but for how long she’s been in the music industry her belts are stupidly high for any one to sing it’s impressive out of her that she can still deliver good quality notes
this was meant to happen as a singer who mainly relied on her full voice, and whose headvoice has only weakened with the years (her ability to mix 📉📉📉📉), her range would only get limited with ageing. she is basically singing below her passagio ig (but with her, idk if passagio is a thing 😭) 0:45 omg the ease?? i didn’t know that note was an F#5 😮 it mainly hear rasp her ease on the Eb5s in it’s like that needs to be studied the ending 🥹
man. i know a high range isn't everything when it comes to singing but it's truly sad to see her struggle to hit even Eb5 :/ that being said i'd take an entire concert of just her mid range if she would cut down on the lip syncing.
I mean, considering how hard her songs are + nodules + 30 years of live singing, her going to a D5 isn't really that bad. voice is a muscle and it's natural that it looses it's range. Now im not a vocal expert, but it's know that professional singers needs to "re-learn" their techniques when they get older in order to maintain the range, tone and all. the only times i've heard mariah changing her tecnique was in charm and mimi where she adopted a more headier mix, which could explain why she kept her voice stable for a long run, but after e=mc2 it seems like she just dropped that
yeah she definitely lost some general consistency/vocal quality besides just the fundamental range, but I think it also had to do with mental block in singing her newer songs vs her old reliable ones
The problem with this assessment is that it only captures phrased belts or short belts which she hits and runs down A note is not owned unless it can be articulated inside a lyric line and sung with vibrato. You are attributing a belting range to Mariah that she has never possessed. It constitutes conventional vocal pedagogy. Maria Callas could produce an E6 in an open-throated manner, but she was unable to sustain it with vibrato. She could only produce a singular pitch. Although it fell within her range, it was never considered secure in her tessitura. She also possessed an unstable F6. Mariah's secure belting range ends in Eb5 in her prime...with occasional brilliant moments on E5. Yes, she had a secure E5, if we are being generous.
I do agree with this. I think what would help Mariah (and I mean this in the most constructive way possible for all the lambs that try to act like I attack her when I love her) is if she altered her technique altogether into something completely differentiated from what she did even in the 90s. The problem with Mariah is everyone emphasized her range to the extent of everyone applying the pressure of that to her, rather than health. If Mariah just chose to top out at around D5/Eb5 (where I think her voice inherently sits beautifully as early as the 80s even like her duet with Bolton) and just focused on healthy breath management and technique up to there and transposed her keys down, she would see a *huge* improvement in her dexterity and fluidity (along with her legato finally coming back). I also think it’s time to go ahead and surgically remove the nodules. Sure, it would probably strip her of her signature “whistles” by quite a bit, but she would finally be able to see much more consistent chord closure, and again, see more fluidity within her voice in the upcoming years. I think there’s still time for Mariah’s voice to age like a fine wine. It just might take some fine tuning and saying goodbye to some abilities she had in the 90s. That’s what I’n hoping happens for Mariah anyway.
@@nunyabiz3668Fully agreed. She shouldn't worry about losing her whistles since it's such a small part of the voice, and hers are already compromised. Nowadays they seems to cap out around G#6 so she's not going super high like she once did anyway. She's already lost some of her 90s abilities, but I agree that she seems afraid to say goodbye to them - like she's just sort of waiting for them to come back someday. Lowering all her songs and singing them live so her highest notes are D5s would be amazing. She could be so creative, rework her entire catalogue into something new, we would get all kinds of awesome new arrangements. She's already done it with a few songs, but then she ends up lipping them anyway (like I Wish You Knew). 😭 I often wonder why she consistently seems to make the least productive choices possible when it comes to her voice.
@ CalebTizon Precisely! She lowers the key for instance to Love Takes Time and (I believe) slows the tempo, and when she does that, she sounds totally fine. I wish she would rework her arrangements in that way now. The problem is people’s fetish for wanting to hear her sing songs like Emotions like she did back in 92’. It’s time to let Mariah’s organic timbre shine rather than expecting to be over-pushed now. With that, her artistry, and voice will age and be perceived so much better than the people who harshly drag her today.
Her doctor must tell her to take a rest/sleep at night for real, at night our cells regenerate, she is a legend, stop this concerts and tours and just focus on giving two or three Exclusive concerts, thats it. Her voice is too special to have not be treated well. I love her, wishing the best for her in the future, The whole world knows she is a legend, she needs people to remind her about it.
I rarely comment on these videos to avoid saying negative things. But what has happened to her voice? It seems like since 2018 its been going downhill fast and not just the usual inconsistencies here and there. I've also noticed shes been dead in the eyes for a couple years like her emotions are suppressed and its very confusing to watch. Even channels like yours that make "best vocal moment" videos of her concerts or show specials. Barely have anything to showcase for real cause she is now lipsyncing entire concerts. The decline doesn't make sense considering she's not doing big tours all year round and has plenty of time to do vocal rest/vocal rehab.
For the last year or so it's all been a mystery. Her voice, her mood don't seem to be following a logical pattern. It could be things in her personal life but I don't want to speculate from what we don't know. That said, she has had downtimes in the past and was able to get over them, so I think we should trust she will sort things out eventually.
@@VMariah I honestly think she just needs to take a break and refresh. She hasn't had a genuine hard era refresh for real since TEOM as a whole. I thought with how Caution was musically different and then Covid happened. That we would get a newer direction but that hasn't really happened. Cause she doesn't look happy on stage anymore. It's very reminiscent of 2008 when she looked like her eyes were always red from crying.
Vocal rest is the last thing she needs to solve this problem. If anything, it's actually been her lack of consistent vocal training/exercises in conjunction with medical therapy, especially considering that she refuses to have any surgical/invasive intervention for her infamous nodules (for sad but understandable reasons), which has been the main culprit, I suspect, in her perpetual voice problems. It's like telling an Olympic gymnast to rest after they've reached their peak condition/skills and just sit the next 4 years out till the next Olympic Games. Ridiculous. You rest only after you've trained properly, and then you go hard at it again to not lose your gains. You don't rest when you haven't made any exertion to get tired, except if you're injured or something.
@@Dr__Feelgood Well considering she has had nodules for far over 3 decades she essentially is "injured". If you arent going to get the nodules removed you cant just train and get better. It has to be a greater balance of training and vocal rest than normal. Otherwise more swelling and damage will happen. Which is why I said vocal rest and vocal rehab. Shes is also on antidepressants which can dry out the vocal cords. But yeah I agree she needs some kind of plan put in place to improve whatever is going on
@@YohaBroha90 That's fine, but that doesn't erase the fact that she has not exactly done everything necessary to train & take care of her already compromised instrument anyway, regardless of anything else. In fact, she has even done so many things over the decades that have even sabotaged it downright.
@@VMariah On top of the almost a thousand shows she did total by like early 2020 between 2014 until then on top of recording Caution, it wouldn't surprise me if she had some temporary vocal damage in 2018 at least until quarantine.
@@A51498I think her nodules were more swollen during the Caution era A lot of "scratchy" rasp people bring up from that time sounds like it's her nodules rubbing together to me
@@VMariah 2018 was just a result of her voice being tired from touring 5 years straight with little to no rest. Something tells me that 2017 being so powerful in terms of vocals was the result of her barely drinking (she was on meds) and having to rest because of her low energy during the era, apart from her whole body being so relaxed in general by meds. Because honestly, after hearing a lot of vocals from 2016, you can tell HOW similar it sounded to 2018, it’s like a less tired, more flexible 2018 voice. My theory is that if she wasn’t so tired in 2018, she would’ve been able to pull an F5. And 2019 was just a more tired and lowered 2018, so it even looks harder for her to pull even an Eb5, but then in 2020, it was kinda easy for her to belt Eb5’s. She was consistently doing it, in fact.
But why has she lost those notes? Thats the question that needs to be answered. Why she keeps loosing acces to her mid and upper belts, what is she doing wrong in her approach to belting that keeps on damaging her voice? And what can she do to prevent further vocal damage. I want her to get better, i want her to enjoy singing again, i want her to be brave enouth to attempt this notes with proper technique and without the strained and the squeeze of her voice. Her voice is a precious thing, she needs to protect and nurture it especially now that she's older. I want her to recover the joy that she used to have while singing, i want her to be happy, TRULY HAPPY! doing what she loves!
It breaks my heart to see mariah go through this since she is my favorite among the vocal trinity💔... I hope Ariana will never go through this and I hope she'll preserve and improve her voice just like kelly clarkson and beyonce
Mariah could easily belt a G# or even A5 in her prime but she chose not to. 00sriah could do a G5. 10s could do a F#5 until 2017. 2017 till 2021 could do a F5 and now its probably E5. If she worked with a coach and consistently cared for her voice however she would be able to go until F# again. Honestly speaking her voice overall hasnt really changed that much since charm era. I know it sounds delusional and whagever but if you compare audios of 2010s when she was on her best and audios of charm era lowered by 1 semitone. Youd scarily get the same results in overall vocal health, tone and technique.
Yeah well she did hit the notes you mentioned in the studio in those years so I'm sure she could do it; it just became inconsistent for her. Idk about 2024 belting an F# anytime soon though... I think we would at least need to hear her belt an Eb5 or E5 live again to evaluate that
@@VMariah She realistically could if she retrained her voice. She'd have to adapt to a new style of singing and get rid of the nodules( which to be fair might go wrong but theres a very slim chance of it failing with today's technology and she could afford the best doctors on earth to perform the surgery) she'd basically have to work herself from over again but it would be worth it. Also she should incorporate a more mixed approach like the vocals on CB(the album). If she mixes more (M1) going higher won't be a issue at all. A lot of amazing vocalists could still sing notes above F and F# way over their 50s and 60s. I'm sure if Mariah just focused on her voice and took care of it like during beacon era we'd see her pushing boundaries again. If Mariah stuck with her 1993 technique and never chose to raise her larynx from Merry Christmas onwards she wouldn't really suffer with any vocal issues going into the later years. There's a lot that could be said but if we take everything into account it's all just speculation at this point. We truly don't know what went wrong, what she's trying to do or what she can still do with her voice. Theres a whole lot of mixed opinions on Mariah vocal decline as a whole and it's a messy topic but whatever happened to her voice. I know I'll still be rooting for her even if she were only able to do a Bb4
So I’m probably going to be flamed for saying this , IMO Mariah never really had a great belting technique besides in 1993-1994 she constantly would and does push her voice to be louder and sound powerful, her voice is not naturally that big. That’s one of the reasons why she couldn’t hit G5 consistently also you can see with when she belts (especially now) she uses harsh forceful onsets like really digging into the H and C, and how whenever (like 9/10 times) when she belts at or above D5 it’s accompanied by rasp/distortion which she turns into a growl that points to her using too much pressure Even in the 90s she had this tendency to push for power and it’s very obvious (at least IMO)
I truly agree with this, and I wish people wouldn’t perceive it as a diss towards her. If anything, it shows the virtuosity of how far she would take her voice for the sake of musicality. She used glottal attack for the sake of extension. Artistically and tonally, it was incredibly, but technically it wasn’t the healthiest thing in the long run, especially for a voice that already had nodules. People need to stop expecting Mariah to be who she was in the 90s and let her be 2024 Mimi, who is still a legend with a gift
i want so badly for her to see a coach…like her biggest issues are fluidity (legato) & upper chest belts (her mix) those would be the first things i would suggest get touched up first the nodules don’t NEED to go honestly bcs i understand the risks of wat could happen if she gets rid of them and honestly…it’s not worth it to me i just think an overall healthier technique & better work schedule and maybe some lowered keys will be just fine
What are the risks of her removing the nodules? I personally think she needs to be done trying to attempt the F-G5 area. She’s proven her musicality and tonality there already. I think she needs to top around D5 and focus on her lower register and middle more. I think having breath control management and playing more with dynamics up to there would be best for her vocal health and regaining her ease. What’s your take?
@@nunyabiz3668 the risk of the surgery going left and leaving her with no voice entirely or just losing her whistle register which i think is worth neither and mariah hasn’t attempted f’s or g’s in a hot minute i definitely think she should focus on her lows and mids too however she should still work to have access to her upper as even with her songs in lower keys some still need her to enter her current upper chest for them
@ clearly_james728 That’s fair. I just think that Mariah needs to almost reimplement a new foundation altogether. I know Mariah’s range extension is her signature trait, but at what expense, ya know? Like I feel like we’ve gotten so much whistle over the years, would anybody really doubt her ability in it if she stripped it in her older age and focused on fluidity and stabilization? In terms of the uppers, that’s true, even in transposed keys she’ll still need it. The problem with that is she has two options: 1. Pull chest which is hard to do or 2. Lighten her chest with a bit more ‘head’ in the mix (hate describing it that way). The problem with the second is her nodules I speculate are near the headvoice area of the tract, so that could be just as damaging for her. I almost feel like getting the surgery (assuming nothing goes wrong) would allow her to have more ease and ability to sing her songs well, but then she wouldn't have the whistle (or at least not as fluently). Like at some point, something has to give, I just don’t know what.
It depends cause if the nodules are responsible for permanently damaging her belts by her using the wrong technique in order to acces that range and try to sing through them compromising her overall vocal health in the process then they have to go either throught vocal rehabilitarion or surgery even if that means that she might not be able to acces her wistle register, cause she's essentially sacrificing her ability to sing in order to keep that register.
Guys, you gotta consider the whole drama that is singing live. I'll give one recent example: She flew from the US to China, bad sleep, whole diferent climatic conditions, she gotta do loat of interviews. And then she flews to Brazil, another totally different climatic condition, lots of hours in the air-condition, more interviews, bad sleep in the plane. For studio sessions she can prepare herself as she said many times before. She can sleep properly, stop talking days before to rest her voice, she doesn't have to give interviews. Besides, she can record one line as many times she can. Live, she has only one shot at that exact moment in time, even if her voice is not on point that day.
I feel like she just needs some rest and allow her voice to recover fully. Based off the clips from the 2010s, it sounded like she was consistently pushing to try to hit those high notes and she struggled because she was performing constantly and didn't try to dodge any of them to let her voice recover. Now, I have a feeling she'll be able to hit an F5 because she's had rest. Not as strong as she would've been able to in the 90s but decent enough that she won't crack.
Comparing her voice to the 90's is the wrong thing to do, given we constantly reflect on how she sounded 30 years ago. Everyone's voice will change drastically over 30 years. She's aged, and on top of that, she has vocal damage that she has never addressed. In spite of the damage, she has range. If she would only seek complete vocal rest, a vocal coach and vocal therapy... she might be able to recover 50-70% of her voice. She'll sound different and have a different approach, but she might be able to belt again and sing freely at that. She still has it.
I'm in the minority but I feel like she could still sing into the F5 and G5 area. I noticed after she rests her voice gains range. I know the whistle register can be demanding by the way it's produced. She probably should start saving that for accent and focus on her belting and head voice. Mariah has a lovely punchy belt voice and is one of the reasons I fell ln love with her voice.
Mariah Carey has nodules on her vocal cords and she’s naturally an alto, which is why her belting range was so powerful in the 90’s. The problem is that she pushed her belting range to the max consistently (singing soprano) throughout the 90’s-2006. The overused whistle register and soprano singing stressed her nodules and vocal cords leading to the damage that we hear today. Mariah could regain her voice with surgery to remove the nodules but it would remove her ability to whistle. It’s a gift and a curse.
So basically, the time at which her voice lowers is drastically speeding up. Also, I definitely don't think that Eb5 was a consistent note for Mariah in 2019 - 2020, as it was always super raspy and tense. She was barely able to do the Hero Eb5 without almost cracking. And if her voice was fully healthy, it wouldn't have lowered until maybe the late 2000s by a seminote (as the voice should be at it's peak condition in the mid 30s for a woman), then lower gradually until it lowers drastically during menopause.
I think Eb5 was "consistent" for her in 2019-2020 in the sense that it wasn't less consistent than her other fifth octave notes. Of course her whole belting ability was declining at that time but at the base level D5-Eb5 was still within her accessible range, while E5/F5 were almost completely out of the picture. It's like how 2000 was only consistent up to maybe Eb5 without cracking but that was only a temporary thing because her voice was in bad condition
@@VMariah So if we look at it from another POV, it might be that her voice should be able to reach perhaps E5 consistently right now, but due to the health of her voice, that isn't happening.
@@BLINGRIAH-RirixMimi yeah, maybe. What happened from 2018 up till now is still somewhat of a mystery to me so it could be possible that her voice is still fundamentally the same as infinity era, just in poor health
@@VMariah I think she has a bunch of scar tissue as a result of her old nodules, and then new ones forming (starting in the 2010s). In the 90s and 2000s, her ENT doctors (as seen in her 2005 documentary) just see some swelling of the voice when she's doing a lot of performances, and that's probably the cause for the raspiness in her voice. The metallic weird tone that she's had for the past 10 years is probably as a result of scarring. And there are multiple safe treatment options against these like steroid injections.
Studio wise Id actually say Mariah hit that mark. Her peak vocals were in the 2000's. Emancipation of mimi had some of the best vocals in her entire career. Now if we're talking live, shes always been more comfortable in the studio setting. With her need to be perfect, she always tenses up and holds herself back
I think this video is more about agility and being able to accessing her upper register with ease then belting. Her belting has become stronger than even in her prime. Look up Thank God I Found you live from her Vegas residency.
I think it wouldn't be bad way If her dodge some hard part and improvise to something els like always be my baby rainbow tour (Milan) but she's perfectionist. I mean It's nothing to prove in her career but If she sing live it touching and feeling even though she dodge.
It’s her habit of placing it nasally that’s actually affected her belts. If she relearn how to sing like her music box era belts she probably can do it, but it’ll take at least a few months and she probably can’t be bothered. Her belts will sound healthier although maybe still lower than before, but her current vocal placement is unhealthy. She is also very nervous on stage, because of it.
Infinity had the stamina though😭 she does sound like infinity now in the fourth octave but honestly idk whether she could sing for a whole concert for an hour at that level nowadays
@@VMariahI think most of 2022 was Mariah trying to navigate her stamina issues because it’s obvious she can belt high but stamina issues make it seem like you’re being hella hindered
@@VMariah i think she could, maybe a lil more dodges, i wanna be like 100% realistic but i do think she could still outdo 2018/2017 level if she got into performing again and sort of warmed up through the nights. if u think abt it she had been going nonstop from 2014 to 2020, so her voice was tired as hell during caution and tbr (even tho she still did her thing), so she never really had time to get rest and let her voice gain what it was slowly “loosing” from being tired, then quarantine came but it got to the point where not singing mixing with tired voice became a big ass problem, so then there was 2022 and mid 2023 during which she basically had to “warm up” for late 2023 where she was slaying C#5s, i think she could get even better than that if she atleast kept the late 2023 playback formula by slowly attempting more and more. long ass text sorry but i’m so invested in her voice atm 😭
@@karlsruheriahh I feel like she could get back to 2017 level (>2018 imo) but with less in the D5-E5 range. For now it's hard to imagine that she could suddenly start snapping up clear E5s like 2017 again but other than that maybe
@@VMariah to be fair tho 2017 was already transitioning into caution as it was slightly worse than 2016, with it being better than 2018 anyway i think she could really tie 2017 atm if she wanted to but she doesnt want to 🥰😭
Most can’t even sing with the nodules, she still here in the music industry is the most amazing thing on Earth. So lambs, don’t criticize her, enjoy the time
Well, she has like 5~6 octaves range, and so many different skills and colors of her voice... so her not being able to hit just a few notes with certain skills doesn't really matter I think... it just sounds like a billionaire lost a few grands to me... I LOVE YOU MARIAH!
i got a question i keep seeing some lambs on here swearing that the 2014 when christmas comes G5 is live that one note confuses me cus it sounds so fake but at the same time so real
@@callisto132 for the most part yeah though she insert some random tracks in 2014 Christmas like that whistle in Joy to the World that she never used again. Between 2015 and 2017 I think she was lipping almost exclusively to the studio versions
@@VMariah her formula with the studio vocals mixing was very pleasant it was satisfying cause it fit I’d rather that instead of the current formula we can base it off I hope she surprises us for Christmas. 😭
@@callisto132 yeah I loved the formulas she came up with for Beacon. They were so elegant but still did the job perfectly while leaving her space to attempt lots of vocals😭
Yes MC has lost its previous power but nothing in its quality; This is completely normal as we get older because we no longer have the same strength both muscularly and vocally.
Yeah she hasn’t really taken the time to really work on her vocals but it’s Mariah Carey she’ll be back you can clearly hear it in her speaking voice she has it . Mom and sis passed away im sure being on the stage is like therapy so LEAVE HER ALONE 😊😊😊
She lost her legato and incredible ease to hold notes in the upper chest register around 1998, also the bright clear tone there. She could reach the same notes (from the throat until 1 or 2 seconds) but far worse quality than before. She had/has better years, tours though and her lower register for example is better and her whistle register has always been marvelous.
I don’t think she should put anymore F-G in her studio work, because then if she doesn’t want to attempt it live because of the taxation, people will be hypercritical of her. Mariah’s proven her range already. I think she should focus more on a more ‘modest’ tesitura in older age and play with her incredible skillset within that. Her lower and mids are still impeccable and her whistle is too. Based on the lives from this year, she sounds impeccable staying in those areas to me.
It's OK, she's in her fifties now... but I guess this "lost" notes, lost only for live perfomances... only in her mind she's unable to do what she did in 90s... in studio i'm sure she's able to hit G5
Her voice is undeniably and irrefutably damaged to the point where she cannot perform. It's a shame but it's true. She still has that genius mind though, she should just stick to making albums in the studio and retire from performing.
Because I was only talking about her uppermost belt in each phase and Music Box didn't happen to have a G5 😭 well ig I could have included an F#5 but I had Tatou Club downloaded already lol
@@ezekielitu6396 it was obviously dubbed, but she hit the notes. The 106 & Park wasn’t dubbed as much. So 1 of the F#5s look like they were the original take, and she was smiling while hitting it, lmao.
the G5 was later debunked by someone as prerecorded and the F#5 was an accidental sharp note from E5 so I didn't consider them for the purposes of this video.
@@vicktheengine5304 yeah I find it funny 2023 had the clearest attempt, at least to me anyway
@@JordonLee2003 I feel like she might be practicing her mixing since that Eb5 in Brazil came out of nowhere
@@VMariah what Eb5? In what song was that?
These sort of videos always make me really miss her live singing😢
Me too, i was alwyas excited to see her show,, to see what improvisation she will do, but not anymore, I'm bored with the same pre-record on every song
Rewatching Jamaica 2015 made me miss her live singing so much
She can definitely still get up there.
Very good comment. I would have described it exactly in this way💯💯👍👍
I think your opinions in this video are extremely good and with the evidence you provided it makes sense! we do need to hear her live voice more in order to further understand if its the level that she left off before hand
She's been held to such a high standard for years on end, and the pressure is probably too much.
great point. i know she knows exactly whats going on and even obsesses about it
She doesn't even have that tone anymore though.
She's too proud and diva-ish for that
@Bluerock121 I mean, she always sings at the top of her range with less-than-favorable vocal technique (pulling up chest voice almost all the time, overuse of whistle register, head voice being her weakest register etc.), all while having nodules + everything that went on in her life.
I think what Mariah should have done was to make her songs less demanding in the studio and increase the difficulty while singing it live.
Not really. Nearly all of Whitney songs were high. She would sometimes just lower the key a bit.
@@ZUN4812she would lower the key but it was never by a huge margin. Her songs weren’t nearly as rangy as Mariah’s.
@abrahamjean8176 Yes, in terms of her whistle register, but that's where it ends!
F5 in the prechorus??
*rumor is she pitched up her voice in BOTH remixes , I loved her remixed versions tho either way but yea..*
Or her voice lowered more in 1 year?

there's like so much shame and insecurity with her vocal condition- I'm not even sure she talks about it that much with people close to her. And like her raising keys and all this stuff is her like mentally not wanting to except her changed voice. How can she be transparent to us if she isn't transparent with herself
This is exactly how i feel
I know there’s the whole thing with her going higher in the studio than live. As a rough estimate, I’d say her studio range is her live range +1 semitone: so 90s ceiling was a G#5, 2000s a G5, early 2010s an F#5, late 2010s an F5, and now an E5/F5. I guess she just has more ease/technique is better in the studio.
What about the studio G#5s in saving grace?
@@guytoledano7215 I think those were pitched up G5s? But also her voice might have not fully lowered yet by the time she recorded saving grace in 2002 so she could have still had a 90s level of ease in the G5-G#5 range.
She hit a few F#5s in mid 2010s
In JTTW 2015 she went sharp
In a happy birthday song in 2014
And likely some others i missed
And vocal range is tricky with someone that has nodules.

2:36 I love how she always goes for the Eb5 in it’s like that🤩 She very rarely dodges it if at all.
it's funny to me cause she's so much more scared/inconsistent when attempting "lord knows" Eb5.
Yeah, her voice is super damaged now and her technique isn't good enough to work around it.
Perfectly said. Her technique just isn't good enough to cover. She needs a vocal coach because her technique on her own seems lazy.

I’m just praying Mimi makes it through the hard times.
It’s not “I don’t want to be here”; it’s “I want to be here, but I can’t do what I need to do.”
This internal battle creates an emotional complexity that many fans might not fully grasp.
What a bunch of yap yap yap lmao.
i think her true i guess "decline" for belts was in the mid 2010s imo
If it had been 2009 Christmas I feel like she would might have lipped the F5s
very interesting perspective !
I have to say this video is very well done and I love how the captions are very empathetic, and even the comment section❤️👏🏽
2018 was a really good year for her
this was meant to happen
as a singer who mainly relied on her full voice, and whose headvoice has only weakened with the years (her ability to mix 📉📉📉📉), her range would only get limited with ageing. she is basically singing below her passagio ig (but with her, idk if passagio is a thing 😭)
0:45 omg the ease?? i didn’t know that note was an F#5 😮 it mainly hear rasp
her ease on the Eb5s in it’s like that needs to be studied
the ending 🥹
man. i know a high range isn't everything when it comes to singing but it's truly sad to see her struggle to hit even Eb5 :/ that being said i'd take an entire concert of just her mid range if she would cut down on the lip syncing.
I mean, considering how hard her songs are + nodules + 30 years of live singing, her going to a D5 isn't really that bad. voice is a muscle and it's natural that it looses it's range. Now im not a vocal expert, but it's know that professional singers needs to "re-learn" their techniques when they get older in order to maintain the range, tone and all. the only times i've heard mariah changing her tecnique was in charm and mimi where she adopted a more headier mix, which could explain why she kept her voice stable for a long run, but after e=mc2 it seems like she just dropped that
yeah it definitely could have gone better but all things considered it is what it is. Her range is still definitely very usable with some adjustments
I'd say that after 1999 she couldn't cross the E5 line comfortably and consistently unless it was IBT, VoL and MiH
yeah she definitely lost some general consistency/vocal quality besides just the fundamental range, but I think it also had to do with mental block in singing her newer songs vs her old reliable ones
And her songs became just lustful parodies with black rappers
The problem with this assessment is that it only captures phrased belts or short belts which she hits and runs down
A note is not owned unless it can be articulated inside a lyric line and sung with vibrato.
@ CalebTizon
Precisely!
But even with her recent voice, she could still sing any basic under the table any day. Period! ♥
I totally agree actually 🎉
I’m so glad lambs are now noticing her voice just lowered normally.
tbh they all seem kinda natural/normal except for whatever happened in 2017-18
@@VMariah On top of the almost a thousand shows she did total by like early 2020 between 2014 until then on top of recording Caution, it wouldn't surprise me if she had some temporary vocal damage in 2018 at least until quarantine.
@@A51498I think her nodules were more swollen during the Caution era
A lot of "scratchy" rasp people bring up from that time sounds like it's her nodules rubbing together to me
@@VMariah
2018 was just a result of her voice being tired from touring 5 years straight with little to no rest.
That’s one of the reasons why she couldn’t hit G5 consistently also you can see with when she belts (especially now) she uses harsh forceful onsets like really digging into the H and C, and how whenever (like 9/10 times) when she belts at or above D5 it’s accompanied by rasp/distortion which she turns into a growl that points to her using too much pressure
Even in the 90s she had this tendency to push for power and it’s very obvious (at least IMO)
She often sounds like even in the 90s she’s going to crack on notes above D5/Eb5 and those notes generally sounded thin and squeezy
Trueee
She is mostly studio singer ..
Can you do a video about her vibrato and agility? Like in recent years. I love your vídeos ❤
Thanks! I'm actually looking into making a video on vibrato actually!
i want so badly for her to see a coach…like her biggest issues are fluidity (legato) & upper chest belts (her mix) those would be the first things i would suggest get touched up first the nodules don’t NEED to go honestly bcs i understand the risks of wat could happen if she gets rid of them and honestly…it’s not worth it to me i just think an overall healthier technique & better work schedule and maybe some lowered keys will be just fine
@@nunyabiz3668 the risk of the surgery going left and leaving her with no voice entirely or just losing her whistle register which i think is worth neither and mariah hasn’t attempted f’s or g’s in a hot minute i definitely think she should focus on her lows and mids too however she should still work to have access to her upper as even with her songs in lower keys some still need her to enter her current upper chest for them
@ clearly_james728
That’s fair.
It depends cause if the nodules are responsible for permanently damaging her belts by her using the wrong technique in order to acces that range and try to sing through them compromising her overall vocal health in the process then they have to go either throught vocal rehabilitarion or surgery even if that means that she might not be able to acces her wistle register, cause she's essentially sacrificing her ability to sing in order to keep that register.
how do we know she's not tho?
She's entering her Alto era.
You saying it like alto is bad
@@Name-tn3md you interpreting it like it's bad.

Congratulations on the video, but I wonder if the question itself is pointless when the singer has abandoned live singing altogether
belting range, maybe. Belting ease, definitely.
Where is 1:05 from? her voice seems pretty clear and without rasp
It's the December 2003 show in LA. Probably her best attempt of that note after 1996
@@VMariah oh, thank you.Charmriah was so unpredictable, I also love the F5 in Birmingham 2003 it was so good.
2:16 from where was this?
Tokyo 2018!
I do think that nowadays she has lost her belting range, otherwise she would sing at least a couple of songs or at least some lines live above C#5.
1:37 could’ve went my entire life without seeing that 🤣
The whiplash when you said four notes I thought I missed a step😭😭😭
With her need to be perfect, she always tenses up and holds herself back
Pretty much yeah!
I think this video is more about agility and being able to accessing her upper register with ease then belting.

@@VMariah i- well it’s lowkey the same 😭 except not HER ENTIRE tessitura has lowered from 4 semitones indeed

She is also very nervous on stage, because of it.
she could reach infinity level so easily if she wanted to 😭
Infinity had the stamina though😭 she does sound like infinity now in the fourth octave but honestly idk whether she could sing for a whole concert for an hour at that level nowadays

The F#5 on “the way” in rotterdam was not a flat attempted G5, it was clearly a stylistic choice.
It was a choice but obviously last second. I said she either goes flat or backs out last second, of which this is the second case.
"she lost her legato" LOL. Where, more exactly? At the market?
She can still support and resonant effortlessly her mid belts and I’d say when she’s in the studio an F5/F#5 is more than achievable.
😢😢
You didn't include any belts from Music Box era, which it was her best era technically 😡😡😡😡
Because I was only talking about her uppermost belt in each phase and Music Box didn't happen to have a G5 😭 well ig I could have included an F#5 but I had Tatou Club downloaded already lol
@@VMariah but you must include at least F#5 on that era. It had the best F#5 knowing it was highest supported belt during MB era.
We can't forget about the 2 or 3 F#5s in It's Like That 2005. (106 & Park and Blueprint).
Honestly bet looks so lipped to me idk 😭, i have the theory that they did 2 takes because the ending looks like a diferent take for me
@@ezekielitu6396 it was obviously dubbed, but she hit the notes.
The 106 & Park wasn’t dubbed as much. So 1 of the F#5s look like they were the original take, and she was smiling while hitting it, lmao.
@@BLINGRIAH-RirixMimi well i guess she still did it live, it's not like she couldn't do it in 2005
@@ezekielitu6396 she did, and she even did it in 2012, lol.
i mean obviously her voice lowered naturally I sure she can still belt E5
Chill
THIS LITERALLY HAS NOT BEEN A TOPIC FOR AT LEAST A DECADE NOW. LOL. Everyone knows she's got her voice. It just matured.
she did hit a g5 & f#5 respectively in 2014/2015
the G5 was later debunked by someone as prerecorded and the F#5 was an accidental sharp note from E5 so I didn't consider them for the purposes of this video.
She is older!
