I do too tbh. I think that time it was a good balance and it really helped her out where she needed it without detracting from her live slayage. After your era/Rockefeller is when things went a little more downhill with that approach, and then of course in the 2020s
Back in like 2012, I was obsessed with the Bye Bye performances, and I thought they were fully live. Then in, like, 2015, I realized they were lipped, and I figured they were fully lipped. But then I revisited those performances recently, and I realized they were partially live! Not only was I pleasantly surprised, but it also made me realize how well the live parts blended in with the track, as I assumed the live parts and lipped parts were the same (either live together or lipped together).
Still one of my favorite eras for her voice! 2008-2010 her voice was in such great condition! Can’t wait for the next part I’ve been anticipating the 2010s this whole series 😂
2009-2010 goes along with her thing that when her belts are extremely good, her whistles tend to be weaker which is why we can see her lip 90% of whistles

So uhh I think my 3rd comment was gonna be a something else but I forgot 😭. 3:43 - idk what this is called in singing, but after the Bb4 she tries another note and it sounds almost like extra air or something. Anyways whatever this is- to me this is the characteristic sound of Mariah’s voice post TAOM. I’m not sure if vocal damage or declining technique is the cause, but it’s really interesting. Even though her 2008 voice feels much closer to her earlier years that the 2010s to me, when she sang Touch my body in 2018, I realized that actually her voice still sounds quite similar to 2008 in good condition. All this is to say that her voice really has gradually changed, rather than having one turning point, there were multiple. I would say it’s Rainbow, TAOM, pregnancy, and 2014/2015.
Idk but it always happens in her lipped performances for some reason😭 when I first became a lamb I remember thinking they were whistle harmonies or something
I would argue she started lipping practically all built in whistles in Charmbracelet, as this was when she stopped performing Emotions and Dreamlover and Heartbreaker were already being lipped anyways
Yes definitely, it just didn’t really take effect until this era because she did so many of the non-built in whistles anyway. I think the Never Too Far whistle is like precisely the last one she did live in that sense
@@VMariahI think there was only one night when she didn't, but every other night she did! I remember one night it seemed like she wasn't gonna do it, then in the very end of the song she squeezed out a cute lil "cau-tio-ON."
So I didn't see it referenced here, but I wanted to talk about the "I Stay In Love" performances. I've always felt based on her live attempts, voice at the time, and her confidence that there's almost no chance those climaxes were live but I see a lot of people try to say they are. It seems unrealistic to me but maybe I'm wrong.
Yeah, I'm 99% sure it's not live. For Mariah's standards it's a pretty convincing lip-sync, but as you said all the factors indicate that there's basically no chance it's live
I was thinking back to Mariah’s 1991-92 performances of emotions. She dodged the ending whistles in most of them. I think a lot of people wonder why she can’t go back to considering the whistles unimportant for the song, but I guess she was still very determined to not lip in her younger years, and not comfortable with lipping like she was in later years. Daydream had set the standard of always doing those whistles, so it makes sense that Butterfly would feel pressure to continue that through playback. But I suppose performing it again in 2009, she just decided to keep those whistles just cause she didn’t want to deal with dodging them and considered them an integral part of her identity as a singer.
yeah I've wondered about that too. I think most of the 1991-92 performances after Arsenio were shortened to purposely not include the last part with the whistles, but afterward she realized it was too iconic to skip
Random thought but the obsessed performances from MOAIA are not that good. It was off pitch and then had raspy and strained belts. The best one is the American idol one. That one is AMAZING.The adlip at 9:03 is so good. Like omg her going lower is something she should do in the studio version!
@@VMariah it’s ok! Other interesting points from this era: It’s A Wrap being more live on TV than on tour (and still being a hard song with multiple live D5/C5s); 100% lipped MIH bridge in one of the AAT concerts; Emotions being lowered but still using the same playback parts/lowered studio version
Another dope video in this series. I do wish the E=MC² era lasted longer with more promotion, more singles (& better ones bye bye to "Bye Bye"), and a world tour. It's actually sad cause when you compare the two live performances of IBLYLT to the two live performances of ISIL, Mariah seemed happier in the former ones and probably was dealing with her miscarriage during the two latter ones. I will say the ISIL performances are some of her best lipped ones; for years I thought the climaxes were live until I later realized they weren't. I was hoping you'd touch upon her Hong Kong concert in 2008 where she had the confidence (like she did in Jamaica 2015) did those live attempts in songs like Dreamlover and MIH she hasn't done in years.
If she really had a chance of 8 hours of sleeping but she records, writes and sings her own song. Compare to the other female entertainer whom I don’t know used different voices on tour 😂
For the record, I do not care if artist (like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Beyonce, etc.) as long as it is entertaining. And everyone knows Mariah Carey can actually sing the way she lips, so I guess it is case by case with artists.
2008 2:51 sis was struggling 😭 3:15 aww lovely run 3:46 coincidentally the last line kn bye bye goes D5-Bb4 and the one in dfau goes Bb4-D5 (sometimes F) 🤭 she really deserves her flowers for singing touch my body live the entire time in 2008 😭 5:15 slay liveriah 6:04 she really went through it 🥺 our resilient queen 6:35 bahaha did the track just stopped running? and trey continued sing live? 😭 not the dubbed whistle in that hero performance 😭 8:06 she still pulled through 🤍
another great video! 14:27 isn’t necessarily a playback fail, more like her forgetting that she’s doing the full song again unlike the shortened arrangement from the 90s.. in some performances you can even hear her whistling a bit on that part before stopping lol speaking of, i love the emotions key during 2009, kinda wish she’d bring it back
you can hear a bit of her attempting the final whistles here at around 3:21 before she realizes the track doesn’t come on yet ruclips.net/video/GBbjJq3L3hc/видео.htmlsi=YH12nRA1sm4g6iwq
is it just me or can you actually hear a slight 'whistle' on the mic when she is lipping those bigger/higher held notes? Like some air was escaping as she was miming... @6:54
honestly I think it was because she was supposed to sing the remixed version and they didn't have the instrumental in the right key for her or something-but still kinda unhinged yeah
Ok I promise this is the last comment (for now) I feel like E=MC^2 had an almost caution like approach to recording. Especially compared to the whistles and A5s of TEOM, it was a much more mellow album vocally. You’re right that it seemed like they were designed to be performed live more easily. Overall despite being the end of Mariah’s commercial prime, E= is very personal, especially with “I wish you well” and “side effects”. I know autotune was used by Mariah throughout the 2000s, but honestly I don’t hear it much in E= compared to memoirs, MC2U, or MIAM. It almost makes me think that nick/label pressures caused her to use this autotuned sound which was popular around that time.
I don't think Mariah was using autotune until the EOM era, which was more subtle to my ears compared to the late 00's era. E=MC2 and Memoirs are fine but god how I despise the heavy tuning on MIAM 😭
I always wondered what happened during that period when she kind of tried to bring back the 90s image by singing romantic songs old and new. Maybe sales problems? Rebranding? Or just her being nostalgic...
I think it definitely has to do with the ending of her career “prime” after E=MC, as she started becoming seen more as a legacy artist, not to mention a Christmas figure by 2010. That’s why people say her career could have taken a different direction had E=MC received the promotion it deserved😔
@@VMariah yeah, makes sense, when I became a fan I thought she hated everything about the 90s and when I realized this "throwback" period I was like "oh my god, they probably forced her, she looks sad" so I understood that she didn't hate it, she just wanted to do other things, lol.
@@VMariah It wasn't an issue of promotion. E=MC^2 got the biggest first week sales of her career and the lead single was her last non-Christmas #1. The issue was that the second single - Bye Bye was an awful pick if you look at what was popular in 08.
on positive side she able to do lypsinc cause in her earlier days when she did not lypsinc she did it so perfectly without a sense of taking deep breath and her high notes are effortless
I've had this thought for quite some time - obviously she slimmed down a lot during E=MC², which gave her a confidence boost regarding her image. Could it be that she was more willing to try and hit the high notes, while being less preoccupied with her looks during singing?
When she lips, her mic is still on and she's pushing air out so whistles come out lol. It happened a lot during Charmbracelet era and some times during Rainbow era too.
0:44 what song is this omg it sounds so good. nvm i shazamed it 1:09 not shocking 😭 kind of anachronistic comment. fans clearly didn’t gaf back then. i doubt they had an insight on her vocals or use of lipsync
I would but it's fully lipped I think except for a few adlibs in the non-climax parts💀 and honestly I'm not too sure about exactly which of those phrases exactly are live either-but the climax is definitely lipped
Yes! The I Stay in Love climax is really convincing; I usually easily notice what's live and what's not, but I could never tell exactly where the playback starts at the 2008 AMAs performance.
Ok I remembered the comment I wanted to make. Btw sorry for spamming your comments. I was wondering if you were going to cover the one child rehearsal from the 2010 concert. It’s kind of like the rainbow rehearsal you showed which we could see her sing and decide to lip the chorus. She did 2 rehearsals and decided to do them live both times? I mean granted the second time was worse, so it makes sense why she decided to lip in the end, but nonetheless it’s interesting because her voice was in such good shape. I mean in general the televised show was pretty live, especially compared to the special she did with her mother which was more lipped I think but I can’t remember.
I am planning to cover it! I also thought it was interesting she changed the Come all ye faithful arrangement to sing it relatively more live in the Washington special compared to the version with her mother
oh wait... I should have covered it in this video💀 for some reason I associated it with part 6 in my notes. It's ok I'll make space for it at the beginning of part 6
All these situations teach us that "JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD" Those who have watched Black Music Archive would know exactly what I am talking about.
The polyphonic overtones is actually her whistling behind the track. There are other instances when she does it, like in the Hero rehearsal for New Years eve 2018, or Fly Like A Bird live in 2005. It seems to happen when her mic is not properly muted during the lipped parts.
Unfortunately that performance is almost entirely lipped I believe, except for a few adlibs in the beginning where her tone is noticeably quite different
By playback system I mainly mean lip-sync tracks! Dubbing (editing audio after a concert takes place) is something Mariah mainly did in the 90s, while in the 2000s onward she relied more on lipping
She's knows her real fans know. Especially now. Which is why I believe she doesn't put much effort into making it seem like she's singing live. She's just trying to give a good show, vocally.
I’m SO addicted to this series it’s like each time we get a step closer to present day and how it’s all lead up to her art of lip sync she’s currently using! Keep up the great work

@@VMariah there is technically the caution one (whether you would consider that an ad-lib or a background)
@@Solo-vh9fm Yeah ig that one should classify as built-in. I think she attempted it pretty much every night right?
@@VMariahI think there was only one night when she didn't, but every other night she did! I remember one night it seemed like she wasn't gonna do it, then in the very end of the song she squeezed out a cute lil "cau-tio-ON."
The next video is going to be long. Can't wait
8:07 she looks like Divas 1998 here
I was thinking back to Mariah’s 1991-92 performances of emotions.
One of her Best style and body
Random thought but the obsessed performances from MOAIA are not that good. It was off pitch and then had raspy and strained belts. The best one is the American idol one. That one is AMAZING.The adlip at 9:03 is so good. Like omg her going lower is something she should do in the studio version!
Nice! Angels Cry bridge is live btw 🥰
yeah I realized that just now...😬
@@VMariah it’s ok! Other interesting points from this era: It’s A Wrap being more live on TV than on tour (and still being a hard song with multiple live D5/C5s); 100% lipped MIH bridge in one of the AAT concerts; Emotions being lowered but still using the same playback parts/lowered studio version
@@coltonisalamb also I think hateu was also more live on letterman than on tour, though that might have been a playback failure
@@VMariah yes definitely more live! Kinda like what she did with My All and Butterfly in 97
Another dope video in this series.
Compare to the other female entertainer whom I don’t know used different voices on tour 😂
i just realized Mariah's whistle tone leaking out when she is lipsyncing is something we almost never talked about
For the record, I do not care if artist (like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Beyonce, etc.) as long as it is entertaining. And everyone knows Mariah Carey can actually sing the way she lips, so I guess it is case by case with artists.
2008
2:51 sis was struggling 😭
3:15 aww lovely run
3:46 coincidentally the last line kn bye bye goes D5-Bb4 and the one in dfau goes Bb4-D5 (sometimes F) 🤭
she really deserves her flowers for singing touch my body live the entire time in 2008 😭
5:15 slay liveriah
6:04 she really went through it 🥺 our resilient queen
6:35 bahaha did the track just stopped running? and trey continued sing live? 😭
not the dubbed whistle in that hero performance 😭
8:06 she still pulled through 🤍
another great video! 14:27 isn’t necessarily a playback fail, more like her forgetting that she’s doing the full song again unlike the shortened arrangement from the 90s.. in some performances you can even hear her whistling a bit on that part before stopping lol speaking of, i love the emotions key during 2009, kinda wish she’d bring it back
you can hear a bit of her attempting the final whistles here at around 3:21 before she realizes the track doesn’t come on yet
ruclips.net/video/GBbjJq3L3hc/видео.htmlsi=YH12nRA1sm4g6iwq
That obsessed performance OMGGGGGGG that was a great 🔥 especially when they lifted her in the air and she was whistling GOOD GOD
I know right that was so cool😍
is it just me or can you actually hear a slight 'whistle' on the mic when she is lipping those bigger/higher held notes? Like some air was escaping as she was miming... @6:54
0:51 I have never seen?? It's kinda unhinged how she's shamelessly lipping to her 1991 vocals in her big year of 2007 lmao
honestly I think it was because she was supposed to sing the remixed version and they didn't have the instrumental in the right key for her or something-but still kinda unhinged yeah
CRINE 💀
@@PatchesNjose yeah you’re right what I meant was promotion as in choice of singles. Justice for Migrate😢
@@PatchesNjose Don't do that, Bye Bye is still one of my favorites til this day... *BYE* 🙄💀
on positive side she able to do lypsinc cause in her earlier days when she did not lypsinc she did it so perfectly without a sense of taking deep breath and her high notes are effortless
14:10 EXCUSE ME?
I've had this thought for quite some time - obviously she slimmed down a lot during E=MC², which gave her a confidence boost regarding her image. Could it be that she was more willing to try and hit the high notes, while being less preoccupied with her looks during singing?
I am the only one who noticed the extra whistle note during playback like at 2:54 ; 3:26 ; 6:37 ; 6:53 ; 7:04 ??
When she lips, her mic is still on and she's pushing air out so whistles come out lol. It happened a lot during Charmbracelet era and some times during Rainbow era too.
I wish she'll go back to this style, with a balanced proportions of lipped and live vocals.
@1:52 beautiful intro ❤
0:44 what song is this omg it sounds so good. nvm i shazamed it
1:09 not shocking 😭 kind of anachronistic comment. fans clearly didn’t gaf back then. i doubt they had an insight on her vocals or use of lipsync
DUDE YOUR 9 AWAY FROM 1000!
Omg thank you!! I have to think of something for a 1k special lol
I wish you analyzed her stay in love performance, I struggle to realize what part is lipped/live or if it's lipped entirely in it's climax at least
I would but it's fully lipped I think except for a few adlibs in the non-climax parts💀 and honestly I'm not too sure about exactly which of those phrases exactly are live either-but the climax is definitely lipped
@@VMariah Much of it is the studio version too lol
Yes! The I Stay in Love climax is really convincing; I usually easily notice what's live and what's not, but I could never tell exactly where the playback starts at the 2008 AMAs performance.
@@Fr0zenPeanut It's fully lipped, so there's no "start" of it. It's just the full thing.
60% live is still more then what MJ did. She also doesn’t lower her songs by an entire vocal type like he did. 🧐 I still love MJ though. Hard careers…
MJ danced though
What are u on about?...
@@VMariah part 6 starting out with the babies!
All these situations teach us that "JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD"

I still think it's INSANE that she basically had to apologize for missing a couple of notes during HER FRIEND'S FUNERAL.
I don’t know why she even got criticism for that tbh. It was a very small flaw in a very beautiful performance
Are you sure the X Factor performance of Hero is Lipped as on the "lipped" parts you can literally hear the polyphonic overtones in her voice
The polyphonic overtones is actually her whistling behind the track. There are other instances when she does it, like in the Hero rehearsal for New Years eve 2018, or Fly Like A Bird live in 2005. It seems to happen when her mic is not properly muted during the lipped parts.

I'm curious about 'I want to know what love is' in Oprah, is it lipped? the whistle sounds weak, or is it live?

So was Migrate & Tmb Fully live on the bet special then then love story was mostly live?
Yes pretty much!

I’m curious to know your take on the I stay in love performance in 2008. What areas is she lipping? I can’t tell if she is or not

What is the playback system? Dubbing?
By playback system I mainly mean lip-sync tracks! Dubbing (editing audio after a concert takes place) is something Mariah mainly did in the 90s, while in the 2000s onward she relied more on lipping
Is she aware that people know she's lipping this much? Or does she think we're all stupid? Or maybe she knows but doesn't care haha
She's knows her real fans know. Especially now. Which is why I believe she doesn't put much effort into making it seem like she's singing live. She's just trying to give a good show, vocally.
Loving this series of videos ❤ You’re so professional and analytical. Can’t wait to see the next 🫶🏾 Mimi is so fantastic
Her lipping never looks realistic to me like I can always tell lol that’s why I would never pay to see her live
