I remember being in the theater watching The Passion of the Christ and I heard sobbing all around me, including my husband. I looked around and it was the MEN in the theater literally sobbing! Powerful!
I watched The Passion by myself in my bedroom and I cried my eyes out. I can’t stand to see Our Lord suffer like He did. My parents didn’t cheat on movie tickets because they taught us to be honest by example. We went to Drive-Ins because it was a dollar per adult and children under 12 were free. Many weekends we went both Friday and Saturday nights. But this was 1950 and on till 1964.
A great modern day Catholic story! “Rudy”! Shows what Faith, Hope, and Love can do. Rudy’s perseverance, and his awakening after his friends death. Great story!
As a young girl The Song of Bernadette was profound in drawing me closer to my faith. Bernadette is my confirmation name. Sad how ya'll blew over Bernadette. No, I did not watch The Song of Bernadette while home with my grandmother. Bernadette showed me amazing grace, Love for our Blessed Mother and her incredible faith in God the Father. Mary's obedients to God. Telling all of us to be obedient, being full of grace.
This was quite a stretch for Maximillian Schell, who portrayed Nazi officer and other mean guys in his other movies. The first time I saw this movie, I did not like it, second viewing, I was hooked, even got a DVD for my collection.
The best scene for me in The Passion of the Christ was during the crucifixion when Mary is grasping the stones in her hands while hearing what they are doing to her Son. Then when the cross is raised and she sees the glory of the cross, she understands everything in that moment, surrenders her sorrow to God, and lets the stones fall from her hands. Amazing!
I love that you mentioned "For Greater Glory" one of my ancestors is San Rafael Guizar y Valencia, one of the priest that would take communion to our people during "la Guerra cristera" (you guys need to do an episode on that, it's pretty hidden in history) Thank you, Father Richard for your kind words to our Mexican catholics Still have some other good movies to watch.
The movie isn’t cringe. It’s a true story about what the communists do all the time to Catholics. And it’s coming to america real soon. Your comment is cringe lol
One of the most amazing Catholic movies is Des Hommes et Des Dieux (Of God's and Men). The movie is inspired by true events. My husband and I could not speak or cry for a long time we were both just shocked by the innocent victim walking to their end. Other than The Passion, shows what the Catholic walk may cost, and reward, you.
A great psychological thriller is NEFARIOUS about a supposedly possessed man on death row. Fr Ripperger says it’s “fairly accurate” depiction of demonic obsession/possession. It’s so good! Creepy but good!
A great but moving movie especially for kids is The Trouble with Angels with Hayley Mills, and Rosalind Russell directed by Ida Lupino. It is about 2 girls in an all girls Catholic school run by nuns. One girl who is always having a 'scathingly good idea' gets to see the real side of the sisters and their faith. It is fun, but deeply moving movie that few ever think about. Enjoyable for adults as well. My nephew enjoyed watching it when he was in middle school!
My mother loved that movie! She would tell me that I always had scathingly brilliant ideas. I would tease her back and tell her she was like the Mother Superior. Find memories!
One of the Missionary that was executed by the Japanese Government during the period of 1500's was Filipino name St. Lorenzo Ruize, just canonized back in late 80's by a pope.
St. Marianne Cope was a nun who also ministered to the lepers on Molokai. I totally agree with others that Mission w/Jeremy Irons and Beckett w/Richard Burton are great!
OMG! I just stumbled onto your channel while looking for good Catholic movies to watch! You guys are great! I'm a new fan and love that you have made being Catholic a fun adventure and having Fr. Pagano with you gives great street cred to the show!!!!
How about _The Blues Brothers._ Two Catholic brothers are on a mission from God to save the orphanage they grew up in. Pope JP2 visited the set, where John Belushi kissed his ring.
Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 silent film the Passion of Joan of Arc (French: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc). A classic! And Franco Zefferelli's "Jesus of Nazareth." And "Babette's Feast". And Alain Cavalier's "Therese".
“The Greatest Story Ever Told” is in the old tradition of grand, widescreen epics. Yet it is different because it doesn’t rely upon action or spectacle. Director George Stevens put in years of research and planning, solidly immersed in Scripture and history. Max Von Sydow gave a heartfelt performance as the Lord Jesus Christ. I still hear his voice with the closing words, “And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”
It should terrify you because it's based on actual events! I'm 75 and I remember when the movie came out the lines at the confessionals were as long as the theater. I read the book and it is more terrifying than the movie because it gives more details about what the mom and priests are thinking.
Absolutely loved this episode. The show seemed to be more fun and flowed and didn't get all bogged down with a few of you guys slipping in partisan politics or trying to wrap yourselves all up in the American flag singing Yankee Doodle or making lame excuses for US government for it's misguided atrocities. Very well organized and with a planned out list and notes, instead of your usual ramblings mating it up as you go. Great show guys and I will watch all the ones you mentioned that I haven't seen yet. Great list of flicks. do more of it.
Not historical or violent, but moving at any rate is Saving Grace (1986) with Tom Conti. A young Pope feels he has lost touch with his people and as a result of a young girl's request sneaks out of The Vatican and gets away for a while.
"All that Remains" is one of the most saddest, but beautiful movies, I have ever seen!! Please try and watch this when possible! It is about the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, and the heroes who survived, and the doctors who initiated xray technologies
What about dead man walking that was a really good movie and I encourage anybody to Watch this movie it deals with redemption and forgiveness.Very strong content
Anthony Quinn's "Shoes of the Fisherman?" Otto Preminger's "The Cardinal?" There's also one about the Cristero guerilla of Mexico, "Viva Cristo!? There are also some good Mexican movies (in Spanish) about Our Lady of Guadalupe. Need to look them up!!!!!
Passion of Christ A man of all seasons St Francis of Assisi movie For greater glory Silence The exorcist The exorcism of Emily Rose Romero St Valentine Malachi Song of Bernadette Dirty dragons Angels with dirty faces
More great Catholic movies I recommend: I Confess by Alfred Hitchcock, about the seal of confession The Jewish Cardinal (about Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger who died in 2007) The Innocents, a Polish movie based on true story about Polish nuns raped by Russian soldiers Into Great Silence Of Gods & Men
i confess ' is that the one with montgomry cliff? if so i have watched it many times. in my country a man was arrested for murdering 2 chidlren and i think his girlfrieend . also tortured the childrn with withcraft....the authorities heard he made a confession before being arrested. They subponead the priest to court to give evidence. HE stuck by his vows and did not.
@@jessiejames7492 That's the one. I still enjoy it even if I have seen it so many times. This goes for other Hitchcock movies. You know that he was Catholic, right?
The Passion of Joan of Arc is insanely ahead of its time, beautiful movie from the 20s. Only seen it once and it may be a bit overdramatic, but then again her story is very dramatic!
Also a good movie about St.John Bosco but can't remember the actor that played him. Another one is about St.Bernadette told by a fellow nun who was guilty of envying her and treating her badly. I believe both were on EWTN sometime. Mary of Nazareth is good too as it shows St.Joseph as more human and Mary is shown as more Catholic than most movies. I watch Mary of Nazareth each year in Advent and The Passion of Christ on Good Friday. Both are very moving.
This show was definitely one of the most entertaining!! I was cracking up!! Gerard Butler or Mark Wahlberg for father Rich. Thank you for all the movie ideas as well!
- “A Man For All Seasons,” starring Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw, and Orson Welles. - “I Confess,” starring Montgomery Clift, Karl Malden, and Anne Baxter. (Directed by Alfred Hitchcock) - “Pius XII: Under the Roman Sky,” starring James Cromwell.
We actually had to shoot this episode twice because of hardware malfunction. The first time we did the episode we included Calvary and Into Great Silence
Yes! He played the part of the good priest tormented by his hypocritical parishioners brilliantly plus it's an excellent homage to the power of repentance and forgiveness! I also felt for Dylan Moran's rich financier character- he was repentant and ready to turn his life to Christ, having turned to the priest for help and support in humility and then the poor abused soul played by Chris O'Dowd shoots the priest. It was a genuine tragedy!
I’ve been watching your videos for about about 6 months. I’m going in order from oldest to newest. Really them. Today is 7/4/23 so I’ve got quite a few more to go! Attending movies is an activity that’s alive and well in the northern area of Los Angeles county (Antelope Valley). As soon of the Christ was an maxing movie!
A movie that has apparently been memory holed is "Catholics" from the 1970's. I haven't been able to find it anywhere (including RUclips).
The Agony and The Ecstasy, 1965 film, Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as the warrior Pope Julius II, story painting of the Sistine Chapel.
I started listening to this show recently, and I found here some good recommendations for catholic movies to watch,Thank you for that. Also,I was also enjoy in the movie -"Ragamuffin" based on the life of Rich Mullins.
You guys should check out William Peter Blatty's THE NINTH CONFIGURATION (better than the Exorcist which he is most famous for) and the films of Abel Ferrara (particularly BAD LIEUTENANT and THE ADDICTION). Love listening to this show!
Wow, it took me a year to find you guys( I see this is from 2019) but I am so blessed that I did. It's kind of late but thank you for a great great show.
Just got around to this episode and for sure thought The Nativity Story would be a part of this list. Seeing some focus on St Joseph and how he stepped into the role of father was something fresh that few movies or film have focused on. It was inspiring, as a man looking to have a child.
I would like to add The Mission with Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro as Jesuit priests in Brazil, Rudy, which is a great football movie starring Sean Austin, The Lord of the Rings, which despite being a fantasy is dripping with Catholicism, and The Sound of Music, probably the best family movie of all time.
BEST CATHOLIC FILM: Calvary (2014) Other excellent Catholic films: Risen (2016) Habemus Papam (2011) The Mission (1986) I Confess (1953) Going My Way (1944)

Fatima. One of the best Catholic movies I’ve ever seen. Really inspires me when I hand make rosaries.

I love the old 10 Commandments movie, I saw it the first time I was a very little girl and it stuck with me. I still love watching it.
A great modern day Catholic story! “Rudy”! Shows what Faith, Hope, and Love can do. Rudy’s perseverance, and his awakening after his friends death. Great story!
I absolutely LOVE Rudy!!!
I like Rudy if it's cleaned up but it's got too many GDs in it
The Song of Bernadette is my all time favorite movie… i watch it all the time, just yesterday actually lol 😂

I am so glad you guys finally said the song of Bernadette
The Reluctant Saint with Maximillian Schell. Classic film about St. Joseph of Cupertino. Very moving and funny movie. Good lesson about true humility.
This was quite a stretch for Maximillian Schell, who portrayed Nazi officer and other mean guys in his other movies. The first time I saw this movie, I did not like it, second viewing, I was hooked, even got a DVD for my collection.
Guys definitely try "Paul, Apostle of Christ"- with Jim Caviziel as Luke
Why don’t they show it on Utub especially for those of us who didn’t see it
I second that, I have watched it a few times.....definitely an emotional film to see hoe christians suffered for their beliefs
Where is it available?
@@0r14n583lt I bought it on Amazon Prime. I don't think you can find it on youtube
I saw that! Wonderful movie
1) 'Risen' - you'll feel like you've just seen Jesus again. 2) Best Christmas movie is 'The Nativity Story' with Keisha Castle-Hughes.
The best scene for me in The Passion of the Christ was during the crucifixion when Mary is grasping the stones in her hands while hearing what they are doing to her Son. Karol: A Man Who Became Pope is a great Catholic movie, and in my opinion, the best retelling of JPII's early life.
My personal favorite is Emilio Estevez's "The Way"
The Robe is another really good movie focused on the Roman Centurion who was in charge of crucifying Jesus.
Oh yes and Quo Vadis plus Ben Hur!!!
I love the movie, "The Robe".
It has a sequel : ,"Demetrius and the Gladiators."
