i love everything about this video. the michael jackson song, his wu tang shirt, the fact that its 94, the fact that its lost footage, rare freestyle run of rodney during his street career. never seen this before!
The thing I love about this video is it shows how you can be amazing and not land every trick every time. People get so used to skate videos where the 53rd take is the one used and think you suck when you mess up skating in real life but it's about those fails too. If Rodney Mullen can mess up so can any skater.
True......but I did see him and the world guys during the 94 summer demo tour. I saw Joey Surrel(spelling) try a fakie kickflip on a bank over 50 times and then after he almost(almost) landed it Remo did a ghetto bird 1st try on a 8ft quarter

Whenever I see an old clip and the video quality I always imagine being there in real time - baggy clothes, no social media, people just enjoying life.
The most beautiful thing about this video is you realize the way his style adopted more to what we know as street skating. Skating was becoming something different in the 90’s and at this point there was more to skating than freestyle. He had a more aggressive and street style

It s actully not that hard, foot straight, toes on nose, push foot into board, lean foward and to the right a little, jump forward a little and when board is unweighted spin it by twisting your ankle clockwise try to catch your landing with back foot, its actully pretty safe to learn and is similar to taking a quick jogging step up a curb, Im in my 40's and I got it dialed last year, once you get it down you can keep your back foot on the board if you want...but the one foot thing bugs people out way more.
I can only do a 360. But I find the hang-ten version is actually easier, so I sticked with that for years, and now it's harder to do a one foot. I should practice more. :D
I was 15. Had been skating for a year, maybe. Could do front side noseslides (on curbs), pretty tall ollie's, and wall rides....almost varial flips. Funny, I still skate, but can't do wall rides or even get close to varial flips now.

Это были "Игры доброй воли" очень интересный состав тогда приезжал в Питер, жаль, что рекламы было ноль, да и не шарил тогда народ. На стрит ещё народ собирался а на фристайл только те кто сами катали 🤷♂️

@@Schitcum he even didn't like street skating in the beginning; took him a couple months to get used to it because in freestyle you look at your board and in street at the obstacle. But he clearly invented most tricks needed for street and made them popular, so he is the godfather of street.

Street skaters where basically kids who couldn't afford to get into skate parks. Mark Gonzales and Natas imo played a larger part in bringing street skating into popularity well before the 90s.

Late flips were actually pretty much out by '94. Everybody was doing them in the early 90's. In the mid-90's everybody started doing more basic stuff, focusing on style rather than crazy flips. There's a lot of late-flip stuff in the first Plan B video Questionable.
I wonder if today those Russians who were randomly walking by that contest on July 22, 1994 realize that they saw one of the greatest skaters of all time performing their sport.
We were in such shit in Russia in the 90s that we were just focused on getting something to eat lmfao, today of course its an entirely different country, but in the 90s it was very much - assy.

После Питера он приезжал в Москву на несколько дней вместе со скейтерами из Калифорнии (CASL). Он катался на многих спотах и снял много видео. Ему очень понравилось, и второй раз он приезжал уже со своими друзьями, включая Марка Джонсона и т.д. в 2001 году."

Heard about this run, there was not so much people, and Rodney was upset, he was a legend already in the US. In Russia we just started to learn what a skateboarding is😄 after his run in SPB local guys received so powerful shot of motivation and inspiration that sb started to grow fast.
This guy is a God for skateboarding. Mullen is the most dedicated, loyalist, compassionate, skater ever. Rock on dude. I wish I could meet this guy some day.

This is awesome. Seeing Mullen again Brings me back to my highschool skateboarding days. I watched so many Skate videos. And my go to reading was CCS skating magazine lol. Mullen, Muska, Campbell, Burnquist, Lasek, Glifberg, Reynolds!!! Few more I can't seem to remember right now. Jamie Thomas I think. Man it was so long ago. I thot I was so cool cuz I could double kickflip lol. Only thing I was good at was not losing my skills during the winter. Awesome times.
I think Mullen was being humble and not trying to completely annihilate everybody else at that contest. I mean, I'm sure he still did, but I think he probably just wanted to show the kids there that even he bails tricks. Because it would have been hard for a lot of them to access skate videos; most of what they saw was probably magazines. Skateboarding equipment was very difficult to come by in Russia at that time. There was a severe economic collapse after the Soviet Union fell only a few years before this footage was shot. A lot of people in Russia were using hokey pucks glued together for wheels, and the boards were not made from maple, and were mostly pressed with very basic equipment. There was a great On video documentary about it. It's on youtube, somewhere. Pretty sure that same video documents a tour of Russia that Mullen and some other skaters like Kenny Reed were on. I think that trip was in a Slap magazine article; one of those mags during the early 00's.

They also did ones on Natas Kaupas, Hubba Hideout, Carlsbad Gap, and some other stuff I can't remember.
No its a contest, but in Russia, between guys from baltic countries of post soviet Europe and Russia, i dont know was Rodney a participant of contest or may be he was just like special guest with perfomance.That time some things what is losts its actuality in developed world, get to russia with late.
@@matsook rodney was probably a special guest. he stopped competing in freestyle in 1990. in 94 he was already in street skate but still mastered many freestyle tricks.
He messes up a kickflip and he does a fs shovit late flip a moment later. It seemed like those two tricks have a similar difficulty for him. We are all just spectators living in Rodney's skatepark.
So amazing that he was able to transition to street style kickflips that are from Ollie foot position with a double kick which is so much different than a freestyle 🛹

One foot manual into to it. He is a true skate god.

I'm 28 and can ollie up a curb(barely) and I feel Im the greatest skateboarder of all time. Especially when Im doing it going to 711 I am thee shit.

No, It's a Menace shirt. Menace was a skate brand in the World Industries sphere, and Rodney worked at World Industries at the time.

A lot of people in Russia were using hokey pucks glued together for wheels, and the boards were not made from maple, and were mostly pressed with very basic equipment. There was a great On video documentary about it. It's on youtube, somewhere. Pretty sure that same video documents a tour of Russia that Mullen and some other skaters like Kenny Reed were on. I think that trip was in a Slap magazine article; one of those mags during the early 00's.

It's from On Video Magazine. On Video did a lot of great stuff, and I think it's probably all on youtube. The thing they did on Pat Duffy is awesome; after the doc they combined his Questionable and Virtual Reality parts into one part with the full version of Tommy the Cat by Primus. They also did ones on Natas Kaupas, Hubba Hideout, Carlsbad Gap, and some other stuff I can't remember.

No its a contest, but in Russia, between guys from baltic countries of post soviet Europe and Russia, i dont know was Rodney a participant of contest or may be he was just like special guest with perfomance.That time some things what is losts its actuality in developed world, get to russia with late.
@@matsook rodney was probably a special guest. he stopped competing in freestyle in 1990. in 94 he was already in street skate but still mastered many freestyle tricks.

I thought that they stopped having freestyle contests by the time it died in the late 80s/early 90s.. interesting
in fact freestyle died in 1991/1992 when the last contests took place in europe. I believe that in this video, Mullen did just a demo.
I believe Rodney's freestyle board was discontinued in 1990. I believe it died around that time
