- It has been three years, since I first posted my video, on cleaning, and maintaining, a granite composite sink. This video, has received thousands of views, hundreds of comments, and after three years, I though I would do an update video, showing you my process, and what I have learned. My sink, is now close to ten years old, and still looks amazing, with just a little bit of work, and three simple ingredients. Follow along, as I show you how to get amazing results for cheap. Enjoy!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing and also to let others know that this technique works like magic. My black granite composite now looks like NEW. We've had it since 2008 and regretted buying it because the hard water stains made it look so embarrassingly dirty no matter the many cleaners I used - cheap, expensive, organic. While I hesitated to use the baking soda and vinegar combination, I went ahead and did exactly as you demonstrated, then applied the mineral oil overnight and it has been looking new for days. It even removed the hard water stains on my black granite around the sink. Thanks again. Most grateful and happy you reposted.

All you need is Comet or Ajax and a non scratch pad. Scrub hard and it will clean it completely. Mineral oil only covers it up.

Thats a superb video.. We just bought one of these for our utility, it comes with pages of instrutions on how to care for your sink that could have just been summed up and replaced with the instruction. "Do not Use " so will certainjy not be buying one for our new kitchen..but will keep the one in the utility now and use your method herd to keep it looking decent . Many thanks

I’ve had success with removing the white haze by just allowing the Baki f soda to sit for 20 minutes and then adding the vinegar right before I scrub it. Hope this helps!

I got this sink for a rental unit. Upon first use, it was staining...very frustrating since it was not used very often ( I didn't have the sink connected to water until the last month). Thank you for this video, it saved me from having to buy another sink. It was kind of lengthy on words, but information is appreciated. I just purchased this sink a couple of days ago and was nervous about keeping it looking nice and was going to order the Neoroc cleaner from Koehler. You just saved me $10 plus shipping costs. It is also recommended that you purchase bottom basin racks and/or rinse baskets to help keep sink in good condition. They would cost over $100 for one of each… $70 rinse basket and $30 bottom basin rack… but after seeing your sink in such good condition at 3 years old… I don’t think I need them. You just saved me another $100!! Thank you so much for the awesome tips! What do you use to clean your sink between oilings? I used Ajax on my stainless steel sink but thought it might scratch or damage the finish of the neoroc.
I honestly just spray with a little antibacterial cleaner & wipe it out, or give it a quick scrub with some dish detergent.
No need for those wire racks. These sinks are tough - I chose it because nothing makes marks and even hot pans don't burn them. No Ajax needed - just clean it like your dishes in between oil cleans.

This works great and is really easy compared to the expensive “supreme” 3-step kit I bought that only lasted a few hours. The only thing I did differently was I used a magic eraser for the 2nd cleaning. Also want to mention that the vinegar should be diluted with water before putting on the sink per everything I have read.
Mineral oil can be used on stainless steel as well.
This is fantastic, if you're on city sewer. Or even a hot climate septic system. But in Alaska, we can't put vinegar into our septic systems because it really mucks up the system. It's not hot enough to develop the bacteria needed that break down the solids. We literally have to pump our systems each year. I suppose if you're only doing this once a year, maybe it's not that big of a deal.
The moral of the story for me is while remodeling, don't get a black composite granite/plastic sink unless you like drying it every time you use it. It's like buying a black car where you wash it and it looks beautiful but has a very visible layer of dust before you get it home and into your garage.

@@omfgitsaxel I looked at the reviews and noticed a pattern that those with the BLANCO Precis Silgranits were nothing but happy. I read the abuse tests also. So I held out for the the Coal Black 50/50 Double Bowl Undermount Kitchen Sink, 29x18x8 and held out for the Coal Black. I've had it since Aug 27, 2022 and it has been so maintenance free that I feel guilty. I've done nothing to it, zero, nada, zip, and it looks like the day I put it in. The part you won't like is the price. However, I believe in buy once, cry once.
You stated that granite composite is very porous so that is why letting the oil "soak in" helps keep the luster longer. The manufacturers of granite and quartz composite sinks tout their incredibly NON-porous property is what makes it an excellent non-bacterial choice for a sink material. I don't doubt that an oil coating helps, but there must be something else going on.
I only added one more step. I used a hair dryer to dry the oil onto the sink.

I'm planning on getting a white sink, just because mineral deposits in water always dry into white spots, so they'll blend into a white sink.

Here is my trick. It uses Mineral oil too.. Just clean the sink normally. It doesn't have to be perfect. Here is the key. Your stopper must leak by a little. Or buy another one and drill a 1/16 hole in it. Fill the sink and add about a shot glass of mineral oil while its filling. Now walk away. as it drains slowly the mineral oil will coat the sink. Swishing the water around periodically will ensure even coverage
Letting any kind of oil go down the sink isn’t a great thing to do if you have a septic tank. Also keep in mind that oil will coat your pipes also. Probably not as big a deal if your served by city/county sewer, but because we have a septic tank I do what I can to keep even a teaspoon of oil go down the drain. This includes things like wiping out my greasy skillets and everything else that has oil or grease on it before I wash or load the dishwasher.

When I bought my granite (dark brown) composite sink four years ago, I wondered what was the best way to care for it. For some reason, logic told me that since granite is a natural material, I should use something natural. I scrubbed the sink with Dawn and very hot water, rinsed with very hot water, dried it thoroughly, then slathered on some mineral oil while still warm, waited fifteen minutes, then buffed it with a soft cloth. I do this about once a month. It does become depleted when you drain pasta or other boiling liquids. But it's a quick fix. I have been using mineral oil for many years for many purposes. When my first child was born 44 years ago, I used baby oil to prevent diaper rash and it worked great, but I was allergic to the fragrance in it and my hands would get a rash. I looked up the ingredients in baby oil, and sure enough, mineral oil was the main ingredient. I went to the drug store and bought a half gallon for the same price as a 10 oz bottle of baby oil. I've used it for everything over the years. It's the main ingredient in lotions, creams, etc. I always have mineral oil in the house!

Terrible! Don't ever apply mineral oil to your skin. It's an oil product. Baby oil on babies is a child abuse. One should only apply natural oil to skin. If you won't eat it, don't massage with it. I know, I know, women put on make up and tons of other creams that aren't edible, but at least don't ever treat nappy rash on babies with mineral baby oil.
Out of the box my Kraus granite composite sink was lighter than expected and it somewhat resembled plastic. It reminded me a little bit of a plastic janitorial sink for a garage. It also wasn't smooth, it had a texture to it. Is this normal?

I would imagine it could be used on any color. None of the ingredients listed can cause any damage to the sink. I would just give it a try. All you have to lose is a little time. Good luck from Florida. 🍊

Does the mineral oil on the sink wear off after a couple of heavy soapy dish/pots washing session?
It takes about a month of daily washing, for it to start looking worn. Just rinse the sink well after dishes, and not leave soap residue sitting in the bottom.
Do you have any suggestions for chips or little holes in the sink, like a repair kit
Sorry, I do not. Maybe check a youtube channel that installs countertops. They might have some great tips.

The potential human health impact of MOH varies widely; so-called ‘aromatic’ MOH may act as genotoxic carcinogens (that is they may damage DNA, the genetic material of cells, as well as cause cancer), while some ‘saturated’ MOH can accumulate in human tissue and may cause adverse effects in the liver.
I'm thinking of cleaning my sink well like this, then refinishing with a glaze / sealer... Any tips or recommendations?

Hi, think I just made a mistake by bought granite composite sink like this without deep research.... It's not installed yet as my house still in progress of constructing. but now all these maintenance problem that i read/watch make me worried.
I'm really curious, how hard it is to maintain, compared to Stainless steel, especially on hard stain like tea/coffee, or any stuff that left for a weeks uncleaned? Mine have grey color, but most people buy white or black which i know hard to maintain, whatever the material is. Like black shower, or faucet are already hard to maintain right...
Honestly it is not that bad. I love a stainless sink, and would never have another enamel one, but that is personal opinion. Where your soap dispenser is, you will get more streaking, but I have not had real issues with regular use. All the styles take effort and have their pros & cons, but I can shine my sink up quickly in a few minutes.
If you had a choice to go back in time would you choose a composite sink or rather a stainless steel sink?
Probably not lol. My husband chose this one. 🤦🏻♀️ But honestly, now that I know how to clean it, it’s not that bad.
I have had stainless steel, porcelain, plastic and granite. I will take the maintenance with a granite sink over the rest any day. I think the plastic/acrylic looks cheap. I have had expensive and inexpensive stainless. Neither was easy to keep clean. Had to polish them all the time, they scratched and had water spots, streaks and stains. So If you like the look of stainless over granite, its fine. But they are definitely not easier to maintain, just different look.
We had a granite composite sink in our old house and it still looked great when we did a complete kitchen makeover a few years after installing it. In the “new” kitchen, I had 2 sinks and chose stainless steel for them and have no regrets there. Fast forward to today, and the house we purchased 2 years ago has a quite small single basin make of granite composite. I really don’t like the small size, which is smaller than the prep sink I had in the last house. Also, it has a lot of the “white stuff” that hasn’t yielded to my most vigorous cleaning. The method in this video, though, is something I will try - at some point, I’m planning on replacing this sink with a much larger farmhouse sink with an apron in front, in either stainless steel or soapstone. I need to purchase mineral oil but hoping my composite sink will come out looking as good as the one in the video.
Doesn't the vinegar etch the finish on the sink? Seems it would rough up the surface so more minerals would attach. I have thought of this too, but thought it might be a good idea?The "white streaks" are water spots and etching. Mineral oil just covers it up... I wish I never bought my sink or got it in gray.
I have not had any issues with etching, and yes, the white can be mineral deposits. I find that my worst "white" areas, are where soap drips constantly when using my dispenser, so maybe the soap is drying out or removing moisture from the sink, but whatever it is, this combination has worked for me for many years. My sink still looks brand new.
I thought white vinegar n baking soda couldn't be mixed together, due to any chemical interaction, looks like I was wrong.. G🎉🎉d.. will try that. Also plz where did y get that white corner by the back of the sink, base board or what ever that call it? Thank you for the demonstration.

I just got my first granite composite sink installed this week. Before I purchased it I did all my research and totally agree with what you used to clean it and then oil it. 🥰 For some reason the installer used mineral spirits to clean out some of the stuff it was around the drain at the bottom of the sink when he was done installing it. Do you think the mineral spirits will damage it? 😟
I honestly don’t know. I know it is not food safe.
They use a pipe dope compound to install the drain, mineral spirits are used to remove the compound, I don't think anyone uses that for general cleaning.
I have that sink. I hate it. I will probably remodel my kitchen next year and get single basin stainless steel work station sink at that time.

I would assume so. You might need something like peroxide if that does not work.
Does anyone with a darker brown sink have theirs look like the before as well? Just wondering if the issues are mostly with the black ones.
I'm about to have a brown one I purchased a couple of years ago installed and don't want to regret anything.
I have seen a few comments from others that have brown and gray sinks. It seemed to work well for them.
I have a brown one and this method is the only thing Ive found to clean it good. We have very hard water.

@@lauralaforge558 Honestly, go with what you like because you have to clean any sink right?! Hard water is ...well...hard on any sink. A shortcut I literally just tried that worked and is a bit less messy is to just spray the white marks (including rings from cups, etc) with pure vinegar and lightly scrub out. It worked amazing! Then "condition" with the oil. It really makes it look brand new! Like she said, let it set for a while before buffing it out, I also think it makes it last a little longer. Hope this helped and good luck with finishing your project!
Just use non scratch Comet and a Scotch non scratch pad. This is all you need, don’t make it so difficult.
Sorry, but not true! My sink is 10 years old and I have done what you suggested and it drys out the sink and causes more scratches. Plus, I don't use or want to use toxic Comet. This recipe and video is awesome and I applaud her efforts!
@@jeannepatriot3762, it’s impossible to “dry out” a composite sink, they are made of granite, quartz and resin. It’s impossible to scratch a composite sink with a Scotch cleaning pad and the manufacturer even recommends using them. You are full of BS.

My apartment has this sort of sink and granite countertops. I asked my landlord if he had any suggestions on maintenance (I’d never been blessed to have those luxuries before lol) and he went 🤷♂️ “I’ve seen you’re old place. You’re clean. You’ll figure it out.”
So we have a composite sink but it’s brown. I used the bon-ami powder (gently!!) a few months after nothing worked, and I thought I took off a top finishing layer of the sink or something because the white would NOT GO AWAY! I was so scared lol
I actually used (on a whim) the Mrs Meyers all purpose spray + a microfiber cloth and it actually worked. I was SHOCKED. But mostly excited that I didn’t ruin the dang thing. It obviously didn’t provide the shine that you’re method does, but it’s definitely a good “mother in law is stopping over and WILL judge your ashy sink” quick fix!

Having natural tiles, countertops, fixtures, AND sinks makes cleaning wayyyy more tedious than usual. And I LOVE cleaning. 😩 😬
I would try cleaning with straight vinegar or diluted vinegar, then buff with mineral oil. I use mineral oil on my stainless steel faucets & bronze faucets.
I have the exact problem you have. New house. I thought I ruined it. Came across this because I’m trying to find out how to get the bleached ring out! The new one cost $50.😤 I’m going to get some mineral oil! Fingers crossed!
The mineral oil is a great idea but not the vinegar and baking soda. It always surprises me that people don't realize the chemical result. Vinegar is an acid. baking soda is a base. They neutralize each other and the gas is released aren't good for you. Use vinegar to get rid of calcium stains which are basic. Then use baking soda or scratchless comet or something similar afterward to do the cleaning. Then the mineral oil once a month, and you're golden.
Yeah I was wondering what this baking soda vinegar combo would do to your calking and surrounding surfaces. I'm considering buying this sink to replace my old, but the cleaning is a hassle. I clean my existing cast iron sink once a week with soft scrub, but baking soda alone would work well too.
You do not have a clue what you are talking about. The gas released when combining baking soda and vinegar is carbon dioxide. It is harmless. You take in carbon dioxide in with every breath you take - carbon dioxide is in the air we breath. If you consume fizzy drinks, such as sparking water or beer, carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in those beverages. Every plant on the surface of the earth consumes carbon dioxide as part of its cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide is responsible for the texture and grain of breads and cakes - that is why baking soda is used in the preparation of these foodstuffs.
Also, baking soda is not a base. Baking soda is a salt. The reaction between vinegar and baking soda is not an acid-base reaction is a decomposition reaction. I suppose, however, that is a lesson for another day.
Baking soda has a pH ranging from 8.5 to 9, making it a base. When used together, vinegar, which is acidic, and baking soda neutralize each other
I’m not sure if it’s the lighting or not but the right sink looks like it has a brownish stain on it.

No backsplash. There was not one when we purchased the house. Eventually we will redo this kitchen top to bottom.
Why use mineral oil if you are concerned about using car wax, etc? Mineral oil isn't food grade, it's a petroleum product. Better apply vegetable oil of sort.
The American faucets are horrendous though, lol!
There are different types of mineral oils. I use the kind safe for medical use or cleaning cutting boards ect.

In reality, it isn't safe at all and there have been law suits against Johnson. What the official statements are is irrelevant. Don't be fooled by marketing labels. Mineral oil isn't a product that can be said to be for food and skin products.
Having said that, I could use mineral oil to polish sink and worktop because I will clean it afterwards thoroughly, leaving no significant traces of it. Just as I could use car wax, for example. Further, we don't fill up the sink for washing up. It's not hygienic, even though it saves water. We always wash under a running water.
However, as you said that you wouldn't apply car wax and other products because you wash food and dishes in the sink, hence my comment.

You still have the whiteness because you mixed vinegar with all that baking soda and neutralized whatever effectiveness that had all by themselves. All those kitchen hacks about running vinegar through your coffee maker to freshen it up, do they ever tell you to add baking soda? And when you add the mineral oil, it just moistens the surface which hides the whiteness, much like water would do.
We just got one of these sinks a couple of weeks ago and my wife was already complaining about the hard water deposits showing up on the dark surface. The first thing I thought of was vinegar. I put a little on a paper towel and scrubbed a small area for a few seconds and then wiped it clean with a wet paper towel and dried it with a dry paper towel (no, not 3 separate towels. Just one, for demonstration purposes). After a few minutes, you could easily see where I had cleaned.
The mineral oil isn't a bad idea as it will repel water, preventing hard water deposits from sticking. After a while of course, normal use will wash away the oil and it will need to be reapplied. That will likely require a little cleaning because the oil was disappearing over time. That being the case, why not just clean it with vinegar from time to time and save yourself a step.
I will admit though, the mineral oil does make the sink look stunning after it's first applied. Something to think about when you're having special company over or you plan on selling your house.

I don't know what idiot once thought that granite composite is a good material for sinks ... worst idea ever! I have a white granite composite sink and its a nightmare to clean it!

@@elenilachana1751 Yea, granite do look amazing unfortunately they are so sensitive to stain and scratches. Stainless steal or ceramics are the best in terms of resistance.

Just clean with Comet/Ajax and a Scotch Bright pad once or twice a week and you won't need that stupid oil.

From what I have read the scrub daddy paste works amazing at keeping stainless shiny. Good luck.
