  • Based on an archived audio recording of Scottish folk singer and entertainer “Hamish Imlach”, performing at St Andrews Folk Club in the Star Hotel, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland circa 1966.
    Hamish Imlach
Hamish Imlach, who died in 1996 was a Scottish folk singer and entertainer, born in Calcutta to Scottish parents. He had a strong influence on many other artists, including John Martyn, Billy Connolly, Dick Gaughan and Christy Moore and enjoyed a great reputation as a ‘live’ performer.
He began playing guitar in his late teens, learning the finger picking style directly from American, Ralph Rinzler, and fromo records of the Reverend Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Brownie McGee. After playing at the first night of Glasgow Folk Club in 1959 with Josh MacRae and Archie Fisher, with whom he had been at school, he became a regular performer at the club and at other clubs around Scotland.
Hamish signed to Transatlantic Records and went on to appear on over thirty albums for the label. His reputation as a superb entertainer extended into Europe, North America, Australia and even Bermuda. After moving to Ireland for a spell in 1978, he enjoyed considerable success with Ron Hynes’ “Sonny’s Dream”, featuring Mary Black on backing vocals and accompaniment by Donal Lunny.
Suffering ill-health he continued to work until he died suddenly on New Year’s Day 1996.

Brilliant collection of recordings, thank you for posting this.
Hamish died the same year I was born and he's had a massive influence on my musical tastes, mostly because he's such great example of Scottish folk music.
I will say that this isn't from 1966 (I suspect more like circa 1990). Not least because he references the 1967 Paisley by-election and the election of Winifred Ewing (two-time MP up to 1979, and an MEP from then until after Hamish's death).
While it's possible he was referring to her simply in reference to the '67 by-election, I suspect the audience knew her more later in her career. Besides being one of the longest-serving MEPs, she became president of the SNP in 1987, so that could help date the recording, although it's a bit of a stretch.
Plus, his voice sounds noticably older than 1966 would suggest. Similar live recordings exist from from the ten years leading up to his death and in those he sounds similar to how he appears here.
