    EA, once again, gave up on their investment before it could turn a serious profit. Capcom, on the other hand, understood, that great survival-horror franchises aren't successful overnight. It takes time to cultivate the trust and confidence necessary for such a vision. Capcom, whether they understood this principle or not, nurtured Resident Evil, from its days as a relatively obscure but pioneering concept, to the absolute explosion in popularity, following the release of Resident Evil 4. And despite the failures soon to follow, Capcom didn't give up on Resident Evil. They persisted, returning to the franchises survival-horror roots with RE7: Biohazard. Now, while I prefer an over-the‐shoulder 3rd-person camera, like with previous RE titles, RE7's first-person camera definitely created its own kind of tension. Then, came RE8: Village, and RE4: Remake. Again, "persistence" is the operative phrase. Capcom treats, game development, _business_ properly, as an infinite game, rather than a finite game.
    Now, looking at EA, I see a company which thinks they've won, just like Ubisoft, Activision, Microsoft, etc. They seriously believe they can "win" game development. When I look at these companies, however, I don't see companies which have won. All I see are black-hole investments where innovation and profit go to die. Especially considering what EA, in particular, has done to its old, successful franchises. Instead of treating them with care, EA opted to abandon them once _immediate_ and _quick_ profit became an impossibility. They don't care about playing the long game, or investing in their IPs. They just want an easy cash cow they can milk until it becomes unprofitable, like Apex Legends or Madden. So, with that said, it's not wonder EA executives decided to put Dead Space on ice...again.

      I noticed Isaac's walking animation is inferior to the original Dead Space, as well. In the original 2008 Dead Space, when walking forward, Isaac will occasionally look to the left and right, and even point his Plasma Cutter to the left and right occasionally. Just to demonstrate his paranoia and fear. But in the remake, when walking forward, he just stays looking forward. He doesn't glance around or point his Plasma Cutter to the left and right randomly. I was a bit disappointed that wasn't included in the remake. It was a small little animation detail, but added so much.

      The old animations worked really well because Isaac didn't talk back then. So the avatar of the player (him) act like... well most players. Now that He talks, it's a bit less needed. Would have been great to have that but it's not that bad.

    • @jamesb1988
      @jamesb1988 2 месяца назад +4

      @Kazaonyt I mean, for how much they got right, I'll let it slide. Sure, the necromorphs sounds were a let down, and Mercer's death was way better/creepier in the original... I love how it showed the necromorphs would allow somebody to remain alive if it was helping them, at least until they are ready to join the collective. In the remake the hive mind just comes across as brutish, and Mercer looked like a religious idiot who got rope-a-doped in the final seconds of a life he had given to the idea of convergence.
      And I realize that they pretty much had to make Issac talk, but part of what made the original by far thr creepiest of the series is his lack of speech. Not only does it make it feel like it's YOU experiencing it, think about how comforting it was any time your video screen would pop up with someone talking to you... cause it meant that you were going to get moments reprieve from the onslaught. In the remake with Issac having a voice, the communication/dialog became x2 as much as it was in the original... that many more times you get a moment of relief/to relax. While it feels good in the moment while playing it, it takes away from the isolated atmosphere big time. This is also a big reason why Dead Space 2 (while great) and Dead Space 3 (pretty good) just can't compare in terms of isolated, claustrophobic horror. Not only are you in large open areas frequently, but you're constantly talking to/meeting up with people = less scary. The less talking + the feeling of being pretty much alone stuck on a massive starship with God knows what kind of abominations looking to chop you to pieces.
      Remake is a fantastic game, don't get me wrong, but it just can't compare to the original. Nothing can.

    Unlike the recent Resident Evil remakes, DSR had no backing from an active franchise. Dead Space kind of disappeared 10 years ago, while the string of RE remakes had RE7 and RE8 to hype them up.
    If DS3 had been better and there was a promise of a DS4 on the way after DSR, I think DSR would've fared better. As it is, it really only appealed to gamers aged 30+ who were around for the original in 2008. I also think a lot of people didn't believe DS1 needed a remake that much. It's sort of in "nice to have" territory, whereas RE2R and RE4R had more to work with in updating their originals.

    Both variants have their stuff that makes them unique. The Remake has the graphical improvement, the Intensity Director that really makes the Ishimura like an active character and throwing additional enemies at ya, making every run different and making reference to the other games one way or another (for example the Story Mode uses the regenerating healing from Dead Space Mobile and some logs making reference to the Ariel from the nodes posts from Instagram account and the Extraction crew). The original has a more macabre atmosphere, better animations and behavior that makes both Isaac and the Necromorphs unique (Isaac has idle animations, in which in the Remake he doesn't and Lurkers they have a unique animation that moves its tentacles in order to avoid damage but at the same time putting itself to grave danger as with a well-aimed Plasma Cutter you can damage all 3 tentacles, and fun fact, the Infector from OG can grab the bodies that are on higher ground while the Remake doesn't 😅). One big dissapointment of both variants is the lack of modding. The only unique mod (that isn't TexMod-related) that exists for Dead Space (2008) is the First Person Mod by Reverse Engineering Gamer that basically transforms the game into Extraction 2.0 but with full freedom of moving (no idea when the mod itself will be worked upon again, alongside the first person mod for the other 2 from the trilogy). As a creative perspective, there are many things I've noticed as a downgrade for the Remake in comparison of the OG (mostly on the animation area and what made them unique). The biggest crime of the Remake was not getting back the OG voice actor of Dr. Kyne: Keith Szarabajka that voiced him on both Dead Space Downfall and Dead Space (2008). Mercer (a nice alternative variant than the OG and his end is quite fitting being betrayed by the only thing he ever cared or loved about...) , Hammond and Kendra performances of the new VA was quite decent, especially for Kendra (making her more trustworthy and at the same time doing her job as a double agent until the revelation...) One problem I had with this game is that it’s too easy even on the hardest mode. They should have added one extra neomorph to each encounter to make it a little difficult. I noticed that they don’t grope me enough when they get close so I don’t get to tap any buttons 😢

    • @Kazaonyt
      @Kazaonyt  3 месяца назад +2

      The game is debatably harder than the original. Necromorphs can't be stun locked as often with gunshots meaning if theres more than one, you can get cornered easily. Ammo drops are no where near as generous as the original (one thing about the original that made it easy was ammo wasn't scarce) I even ran out of ammo completely and had to resort to melee, whihc is the clip i showed in the video. you have to explore the ship if you want weapon parts to upgrade, which means you are also risking resources. but this also means you can't make the plasma cutter OP early in the game. The Large health pack was significantly nerfed. Only heals 3 bars whereas in the original it did the whole bar. All healing items were nerfed.
      But Issac is a lot more nimble this time so it's easy to evade enemies. The Necromorphs are also overall a lot less aggressive, they move slower and they rarely grab you. They also do less damage depending on the necromorph type. all their health and damage values were changed in the remake. the plasma cutter becomes extremely OP with the melee upgrade, one punch will knock a necromorph over if there isn't anything in its way. this makes conserving ammo much easier.
      Overall, I'd argue the remake is harder. But you can make the game easier by upgrading the plasma cutter as early as possible and use telekensis a lot because most stuff in the environment can be used to kill a necromorph. I think the game is only hard depending on the player. Since I have loads of experience with survival horrors, the number one rule i always follow is that every item is precious and I need to keep it. this leads to me hoarding ammo and being extremely conservative. and by time im at the end of the game. i have loads of ammo. I had about 120 plasma cutter rounds and 300 pulse rifle rounds for the final boss lol

      @@KazaonytI only play on the hardest difficulties in games with the only exception being 1 life type modes. Needless to say I have seen them grab me, flank me, sprint, lunge, and more that they don't do normally. I believe that these behaviors are locked not only by difficulty but also how well the player is doing, like how much health you have, what is in your inventory, when was the last time you got hit and probably more.
      I've had some wild encounters to like in multiple playthroughs in a row now, every other necromorph is a phantom/nightmare sometimes its multiple at once with the most I've encountered being 5 and they were all Leapers in the asteroid room. Nearly every brute has been a phantom/nightmare since my first new game plus.
      Once right after fighting the Leviathan, I got 2 phantom slashers and a Leaper in the hallway out, then when I went to leave hydroponics, I ran into 2 full sets of divider parts and 2 Pregnants right outside the door.

    Horror games are not selling that well on the mainstream market. With the exception of Resident Evil. That game is an icon more than anything so it sells well even as an horror game.
    Dead Space remake is the perfect work on reusing an old blueprint but perfect the vision the original devs had.
    Transform the old levels into a metroidvania connected world (here the ship) with random encounters BUT keep the (small or big) scripted moments. Rework the weapons and their alt mode so they are more fun/usefull. Make the main character more like its sequels and take what was good in zero-g during Dead Space 2/3 and add it to the remake. And change what didn't work (boss and so on).
    The ship already felt like a lived-in world back then, it's even more the case here with all the details added. The Station in DS2 was like that too. Shame We'll never get the remake, since this remake didn't sold well enough for EA standards.

      Yeah, its make a lot more sense. in the original, Hammond somehow knew how ship engines work lol. But what i liked about the voiceless protagonist is that he has no control over the situation. He just follows orders like a droid. One detail I love with this, is that you can read Issac's personal logs in between chapters. He notes his frustrations over Hammond and Kendra arguing over what to do next, he simply says "I have no say in this" which filled me with dread. Issac can only follow orders, he goes deep into the ship with no combat training and experience and had to hope for the best.
      With the remake, Issac seems confident and not really fearful. He is early in the game but that fades away. However, this may be due to Issac being drived by saving Nicole. Or being influenced by the Marker.

    In my opinion, business isn't just about meeting profit expectations (especially unrealistic ones), it's also about maintaining trust and goodwill with your customers. Sometimes as a company, especially a large company with many assets/properties (EA), you need to accept that not every one of your products is going to be a smash hit in the profit margins and that some of your product's goals should be focused on nurturing your public image and connection with your customer base.
    Dead Space is clearly never going to be top a selling GOTY candidate EA seems to expect out of it, it's just not in its nature. Yet instead of lowering their unreasonable expectations and shifting their mindset for what Dead Space as an IP *can* do for them, they instead just mark it as a commercial failure and throw it in the dirt.
    This is what happens when soulless corporate companies get their grubby hands on passion projects, something that feels a little too common these days.

    So, alot of people aren't talking about this, and I really want to get it out there. There is one reason Dead Space Remake exist. Only one.
    EA was being petty about former Visceral Developers, and the Callisto Protocol.
    EA did not want their former developers to succeed, they wanted to put out a new Dead Space to help open lawsuits for future copyright infringement. Once the Visceral Developers reformed and EA got wind of Callisto Protocol the Dead Space Remake went right into development. Of course the Callisto Protocol didn't do so well on its own merit, but the competition of this remake didn't help matter's eather. Ontop of that alot of people didn't give the developers a chance to explain or fix it or anything, it flopped and everyone was looking to the Dead Space Remake.
    Unless Callisto Protocol 2 is announced I wouldn't look for a Dead Space 2 remaster, though it is possible. EA tends to pour too much money into single player projects then make demands to make a niche genre more wide spread and available for general audiences. The original Dead Space got two movie tie ins to try and help promote it. Who knows how much they dumped to rush development of Dead Space just to compete with Callisto.

      Also fun fact, unless the developers are very vocal about DEI, most of that comes from the top, oversight and managers. Alot of people are quite tired of it, but investment firms like Blackrock and Vangaurd pour alot of money into alot of investments, EA, Disney, most of Hollywood, and as long as they are doing what the investment company wants, they get bailouts, writeoffs and bonuses. Which is why Disney has been able to remain afloat without producing anything of substance for, quite some time. They are doing as they are told and getting bailouts and continued investment. I agree with nearly everything you said. Though, I preferred Issac to talk in the game since I never saw myself as Issac so I preferred this version where he has a voice. But as to why it didn't sell was EA's own fault really. This game released inbetween RE4 which was a banger of a remake series that was insanely popular and then on top of that released virtually on the same day as the Calisto Protocal made by Glen Schofield. EA has built a reputation as a company that is solely focused on cash grabs so the Remake likely was already looked at by the community as just that... a cash grab. Now it was actually well made... but then on the other side you had the Callisto Protocal by Glen who people thought was going to make a banger of a game... to actually be disappointed. So the timing of release was terrible for DS remake customers were split three ways already with EA still being looked at negatively which I'm sure didn't help. The fact that it did as well as it did by word of mouth already tells me had they released this at a better time we'd probably be talking about DS2 remake as we speak.

    I love DS franchise and it was buggy for me on launch day with a lot of stuttering only played like 5-10% didn't touch again because of travelling still really good looking game, the only thing kills games is over expectations these big greedy companies wants GTAV kind of sales numbers. The reality is the marketing of the game wasn't great and then it's above 18+ which also reduces a lot of sales. So many games studios got shut down because of this stupidity, and then they have the license of the games so the studios can't make the sequels or anything with that franchise ever again.
    The only reason the DS Remake exist is because of the greed they saw how well RE games doing so they greenlit the game but with the other studio. The reason RE games worked and DS remake didn't is because of RE franchise has bigger audience they made movies, shows, animations and experimented with the franchise with RE 7 and 8. EA could've done the same with DS franchise but didn't you need to expand to grow the fanbase that's what Japanese do so well.
    I hope they give DS one more chance In my opinion they should make a live action sci fi horror show with good director, writers with HBO or something with good budget people are definitely are bigger fan of shows and movies than horror games and expand the fanbase.

    Voice acting critique-wise, I concur, Kendra & Hammond’s VA isn’t as solid as the original, but I also don’t think they did the worst job; I personally think it’s quite decent, overall. And yeah Gunner Wright & Tanya Clarke nail their roles (no surprise to me), but I also have to credit Dr Challus Mercer’s actor, as well; he did a very good job at portraying the remake’s update on the character. In the original, he felt more like a raving fanatic too much that it was a bit lacking in dimension to his character, but in the remake, he’s a lot more cunning, charming and even calculating in how he acts; like the audio log where he deliberately injects someone with the bio-reconbinant DNA, he comes off like an utter psychopath, and makes him a genuinely frightening person. Mercer was a highlight of the remake, and really enjoyed his actor’s performance, especially when interacting with Isaac.

      @@thecircleoft.e.d2121 holy shit this was one thing I regret not bringing up in the video. Mercer was fantastic and was up there as one of my favourite things about the remake. I respectfully disagree with Hammond though, everyone he spoke it just bothered me. The OG Hammond sounded scared but collected, he’s against an unknown threat and his team are getting picked off. The remake however, there’s no fear in his voice. It’s like he’s reading his lines with zero context. Kendra’s performance got better as the game went on and grew to like her.
      But yeah I agree 100% with you about Mercer. Even though he’s the villain. I kinda liked him. Which in my opinion is an underrated trait for any villain

    Love the environments and lore but my lord gameplay is way too easy!! Before y’all say I wasn’t on hard I’ve played OG horror games that yall can’t even come close to completing nowadays. Give me a like if you think horror games are to easy now. Even on hard mode. I had to play through the original game without upgrading my suit or rig and with the flamethrower just to have it difficult. No horror game should be this easy. Remake has solid gameplay can’t deny but I’d sacrifice solid gameplay to have an actual horror experience.

Story wise they actually added more story to some of the characters that had little story in the original. One of my gripes with the game is with the voice acting, many of them were disappointing. They most likely arent. But to be honest, it really doesn't need it at all. Just like Dead Space 1, the remake wasn't necessary. I expressed that in the video. But I can't deny the brilliance of it. I loved it, it felt unique compared to the original. Dead Space 2 on the other hand will be harder to remake because it won't have as many options. For example, exploration. Issac is on a race against time, he doesn't have time to snoop around. I think the only plausible thing they can do is either do a full reboot (i know, not a fan of this option) or make dead space 4.

    The open world actually hurt the game imo. It exposes the fact that most of the ship is empty once youve gone througb an area. The original is "on the rails" but this allowed it to be crafted like a haunted house, and have the impression that all hell might breal loose at any moment.

    • @Kazaonyt
      @Kazaonyt  3 месяца назад +1

      Well you have to remember, a lot of the population was consumed and came part of the Levithan. That explains why it feels empty, Kendra even explains the fleshy walls are the ship crew. I still think there's plenty of Necromorphs when you back track. Sometimes 4 or 5, i think it's the perfect amount. this way you don't burn through your resources when exploring. But sometimes areas have one necromorph. I think this is good because it adds tension. you won't be sure how many there will be or if it's even worth going for.
      I get that the original was more on the rails. But this remake had to evolve the gameplay somehow. and it did whilst staying faithful to the original.

      @@Kazaonyt I wouldn't call sandbox design an evolution over linear design necessarily. Both have different strengths imo. I will say though my impression of the ship being empty was probably exacerbated by me doing every side quest and collecting everything. During a more causal playthrough you probably won't be running through the same areas quite as many times as I did, and much of the tension would be preserved. I went in with a completionist mindset and after you explore every nook and cranny with a fine toothed comb it can start to feel mundane. Which isn't something the average player will necessarily do.
