- PROBLEM - How to lift a massive 300-400 lb spare tire?
SOLUTION - Harbor Freight and a half decent welder :)
In this week's video we find a solution to a problem: how to pick up this massive 54" spare tire.

There is a side entrance on the driver’s side with a half finished ladder. That’ll be another day figuring out a good way to mount it and finish it

Instead of using a tree saver could you use the loop you already have on the line and then make the end of the winch line long enough with a loop on the end to go through the rim and then connect the loop on the end of the line to the loop right above the tire with a soft shackle?
The inside wheel edges were pretty sharp and we didn’t want to damage the winch line. Tree strap is an old one we had lying around so we didn’t care if it was damaged. But this isn’t the final solution we just wanted to test it out
Thought that spare tyre mount was going to be on a hinge . Then you could bolt the rim to the carrier and winch the whole carrier up
We want this massive tire MOUNTED. This isn’t an overland rig where we’ll need to access the rear. We needed a simple and STRONG solution and this is it.
It’s a cool idea, but I think you should build a swing arm that rotates around like 720° attached to the roof rollbar that would swing around to the sides and then lower it for you. That way you don’t have to manhandle that thing on the trail. Should you ever have to fix aflat tire?
We’re keeping it simple. In this case simple is better
Air down a front and then a rear tire and check for new obstacles. Better to plan for when a tire fails then wishing you had something different when the time comes.

Wouldn't a rolling pivot be better for the rope ?
We’re mounting the spare on the rear. As for having a rolling pulley, yes it would be better on the rope but this won’t get used everyday. We’re keeping it simple
You have to rig a mini boom on the back to lift it up a little higher and put it out. Just a little farther,
The farther out it is the more leverage there is. And this thing already weighs 300+ lbs so we’re keeping it simple and mounting it as close to the bed as possible

Do you think it's true that spraying all of the "to be welded" joints with Easy-off Oven cleaner makes the weld clean and welds better? It COULD save hours of tedious shop time. I haven't tried it yet.
I’ve never heard of that but it sounds dangerous. There are a lot of nasty chemicals out there that are extremely toxic when inhaled. I’d stick to working a little longer and having my health. Acetone works really well for prepping welds
Maybe I missed it in a earlier video. What are you going to do with the zero up travel ypu have now? Cutting the body big time, Lift? I have always wanted a MOG.
It’s not sitting at final ride height BUT we’re not too worried about maximum articulation for snow wheeling

Put the winch choke at the top center ov trad an tire will hang straight 90*
Tip to save cut-off wheels cut it by scoring it you will save 50%. Plunge cutting waists it due to excess heat.
But they were some nice straight cuts.
We do a LOT of grinding here. Scoring through 3/8” steel would be absolutely brutal compared to straight cutting through, even if you do save a disc it wouldn’t be worth it personally
Well I’ll say this 3/16”- 1/8” cut off wheels work at there optimum max speed and light pressure. Cuts fast enough to have a track to follow in four passes. That’s all I’ll say about that. Trying to save you time and money✌️
Same can be done by 4 scoring passes. The disk doesn’t get gummed up haveing to clear dust, that why you have to stop a few tomes when hogging out the metal. Where as scoring there’s no buildup of cuttings in the slot. I’ve cut 5/8” plate this way at work for 10 years, till we got a plasma cutter and a straight edge.
You've used the term "roll cage" referring to the rear structure - is it intended to be an actual cage or more of a bed cover? I run a similar style "cage" in my topless D1 and I can tell you from experience (as well as simple logic) a bunch of rectangles isn't much for strength. Triangles man, think triangles.
This cage will be strong enough to protect in a low range rollover, but it’s not going to pass any race cage standards. We did use DOM tubing to buff it up too, but it’s not designed to be bulletproof like the cages you see on buggies by any means
@@threecreeksbackcountry Fair enough. The "cage" on my D1 was done the same way when I got it. It held up fine for some very gentle flops but last year took a pretty hard flop and pushed the B-pillar area in quite a bit. Sure I still drove it out and nobody was hurt but it certainly wouldn't have moved with proper triangulation. Like you, this is just a trail rig and isn't supposed to be competition spec by any stretch, however I did go in add cross bracing at least for the front seats since that's the only seating area I still have. Sounds like you understand the limitations.
You probably wheel your Disco way harder than this Mog will be wheeled 🤠, at least that’s the plan. It’s being built for snow tours here in the Cascades where it’s pretty tame to be honest. Deep snow but pretty wide forest roads. Nothing like the Sierra trails you guys run 🥲. But I will probably take your advice and add some diagonal cross beams to the front and rear. We just have to finish the spare tire mount first.

8:40 - you're running 30 psi on your regulator? That's really high for MIG. Most people will run single digit pressures of 5-8 psi unless outside in windy conditions. I realize 30 is the static pressure and it will drop when you pull the trigger but double check and I think you'll find you're wasting a lot of gas. Not trying to be a troll; but hopefully save you a buck or two in gas.
We are in windy conditions to be honest 😂. We weld with the shop door typically open and get a consistent afternoon breeze. 5-8 psi and we get real annoyed real quick. 30 psi is at the upper end and we find that it works for us. We’ve met folks who just keep it wide open and that is wasting gas for sure. We’ve messed with all settings and 30 psi seems to work best with our conditions
@@threecreeksbackcountry I've run that high working outside before to avoid porosity, so I get it. I know one time I forgot to turn it back down and burned through a bottle in what seemed like no time! But if that's what it takes I guess that's what it takes.

Actually we do. We’re running snow tours and will be steadily traveling over 6’ of snow at elevation.

I had to skip up to the last few minutes but do yourself a favour and use tubing for the bumper so it cradles the tire on the inside
and mount the tire on the inside
Attached winch to top of cradle bumper so it lowers the bumper
Then when you unbolt the tire it rolls off the bumper
The tire when needed off road is bigger and heavier then in the shop and your by yourself
Build smart so you don’t have to struggle later

We understand what you’re saying. What you missed when you skipped to the end was us explaining we’re going with the simplest and easiest method. This is a massive build and the spare tire is the least of our problems. As long as we can mount and dismount it, we’re good 😎

I am giving you decades of experience that say don’t give yourself a hard time by thinking a simple idea is simple to use in reality
That’s why builders of earth roamers use swing down tire carriers
Winch idea is simple and will work
But anyway
Enjoy what your doing it’s your build and what your doing will work I just know the time wasted all the time when doing it the way you are lol
@@getbusylivenordien5394 we do understand exactly what you’re saying and respectfully telling you that’s not how we’re going to do it. This isn’t our first build either and it’s absolutely not an Earth Roamer. There are thousands of ways to engineer and build something like this and there’s a reason we’re going with the simplest way. Earthroamers are Fuso builds and they run 37” tires MAX (we also have a Fuso FG). They are built for Overlanding. This is absolutely not an overlanding rig. This 54” tire weighs 300-400 lbs. A totally different ball game. It’s specifically built to be STRONG and SIMPLE. Nothing more, nothing less.
People are so quick to get upset because we don’t take their advice. Take it easy and just enjoy the build, our build 😎

I kniw the tire size on earth roamers and some are bigger then 37’s as reference to big tires are a PIA to deal with the way your doing it
but I won’t try and confuse you anymore as you already are by not actually reading and just trying to convince me you have some clue what your doing and you don’t have to convince me as I can see you have a clue just not many in regards to actually helping yourself you would rather lean things the hard way and that is fine by me
