This song was originally recorded back in the 60’s! They had hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000’s

This was one of the first songs 🎵 by The Bee Gees that I heard in 1968 that has made me a fan of them. When they wrote this, they had NEVER been to Massachusetts.

Calm and emotional is a perfect description of Robin's voice.

Robin's voice and vibrato were absolutely inimitable and unique in pop music. He was primarily a ballad singer. Maurice said the group had 4 voices, each brother's voice and the combined voice of Barry and Robin together. This was their first UK #1. Robin credited it with saving his life. He was returning to London when the train derailed. He had splurged because of their first #1 and bought first class tickets. All of the 50+ killed were in 2nd class coaches. He was only 17 and had to pull out dead and mangled victims. Barry said Robin came in and sang the melody and he loved it. It was about hippies going to San Francisco but getting homesick and coming back. The songs in the 60's were short in order to get airplay. Robin singing "I started a Joke" in this same concert is lovely. The 4th brother Andy was 9 years younger that the twins Robin and Maurice and had a solo career but died of a heart ailment at 30 a year before this video.

You should do the Medley from this same concert. It’s about 12 minutes long but they will give you glimpses of some of their earlier hits with basically them around 1 mic with Barry on the guitar. You’ll really hear their harmonies in this performance!

It is absolutely mind blowing. Jaw dropping amazing. How they so effortlessly walk back and forth up to the mic and deliver their parts so nonchalant and 100% perfect.

Robin singing lead, Maurice has hat on and then Barry . This song is from 1967 they sang it all through their career. You might enjoy some of their other late 60s early 70s songs. Words, 1st of May, How can you mend a broken heart, Lonely days. This was their anti flower power song. Massachusetts meant flower power (a lot of which was in San Francisco type areas) won’t last you need to go home.

Andy Gibb was the youngest, 4th brother. He had a short career before he passed but it was a very successful career with 3 straight #1 records right off the bat! Barry produced all of Andy’s records, wrote most by himself, or with his brothers (including Andy), and sung background on his records. Just search Andy Gibb and you’ll see.
The Bee Gees were great songwriters so check out songs they wrote for others:
Songs written by Barry Gibb (that other artists sung), alone or with his brothers (Robin &!Maurice Gibb):
If I Can't Have You (Yvonne Elliman)
Woman in Love ( Barbra Streisand). In fact, Gibb wrote every song on her Guilty CD, and did 2 duets with her. And he did most of the background vocals on a lot of the songs.
Islands in the Stream (Kenny Rogers & Dolly Partons). In fact, Barry wrote all the songs on Kenny's "Eyes that See in the Dark" CD
Heartbreaker (Deion Warwick). In fact, Barry wrote every song on this CD too. The Bee Gees also did the Background vocals.
Chain Reaction (Diana Ross) and yes, Barry wrote all the songs on this CD too. Barry also did the background vocals.
Immortality (Celine Dion) The Bee Gees also sung background. The live 1997 from Vegas is excellent!
    More Than a Woman (Tavares)
    Love Me (Yvonne Elliman)
Come on Over (Olivia Newton John)
Emotions (Samantha Sang, with a lot of background vocals with Barry). Destiny's Child also recorded it.
    Grease--from the movie (Frankie Valli)
Heart Beating in Time (Leo Sayer)
Let me wake up in your arms (Lulu), who use to be married to Maurice Gibb
A lot of Andy Gibb songs (Shadow Dancing, Everlasting Love, Love is Thicker than Water, Our Love, Don't Throw It Away; Desire;)

EVERY song you listed was written by the brothers together (usually Barry and Robin) except "Grease" and Andy's songs. Too many people always give Barry the credit when his brothers deserve it as well. For example, Robin and Barry wrote 4 songs (two of which were hits for her) on the Streisand LP and all three wrote a 5th. Barry wrote one alone and three with Albhy Galuten. Hardly a Barry solo endeavour. Maurice and Barry wrote "Immortality". Most of the Bee Gees songs since @ 1966 were written by the brothers together. His brothers were superb songwriters and all in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Give credit where due.

@@susieq9801 no disrespect…I actually said Barry AND/OR with his brothers. I respect all 3 as songwriters. I just used Barry’s name more perhaps because he was one of the producers for those other artists. But sorry if I came across of not giving Robin and Maurice their credit….

@@susieq9801Hi Susie! 👋 I've lost hope that the twins will ever be acknowledged as talented songwriters. It's sad and and really annoyed that Barry is still getting all the credit. Am glad he is alive and well, but my gosh, people should give the same respect to his brothers too

    • @susieq9801

@@Sandra6411 - No worries. It's not personal. I just find that Barry gets way too much credit at the expense of his brothers, especially since they died. Songs Robin wrote on LP's like 50 St Catherine's Drive exhibited deep philosophy and pure poetry. He had a poet's soul. His 80's stuff was catchy and contemporary pop. Barry wrote great tunes with catchy hooks but Rob added the whimsy and poetry IMO. I can always guess who wrote what parts of songs and which lyrics. "Islands in the Stream" was based on a Hemingway novel and Robin was a voracious reader and Hemingway fan. Barry said he was a great lyricist due to his vast vocabulary. The two were very different people and yin and yang as songwriters. Barry's forte above his brothers was producing. Maurice was the guy who found the perfect chords and harmony. He was indispensable. Cheers.

I really enjoy your reaction thoughts. You really dig deep and have a lot of great comments about the music - especially for someone so young! Keep up the good work, and I’m glad you’re expanding your music horizons! Don’t stop. The Bee Gees have lots of hits for you to do! They were a big hit in the black community when I was growing up in spite of them being white!🤣.
And yes, their younger brother Andy Gibb had a successful solo career before he passed at a young age. The Bee Gees (particularly Barry) had a hand in steering his career with writing, producing, and background singing on a lot of Andy’s songs. His first 3 single releases all went #1, so do some reactions of Andy. He was Barry’s mini-me!
Try some of these other Bee Gees songs too: (and, I couldn’t find your Bee Gees play list🤷🏾‍♀️)
    ---------------------
I’m not sure if you’ve reacted to any of these, but here’s a list with my interpretation of what genre I think they fall under:
Too Much Heaven (R&B) Went to #1 (you reacted to this)
How Deep Is Your Love (R&B Ballard), went to #1 (you reacted to this)
Staying Alive (disco), went to #1
Night Fever (disco), went to #1
You Should Be Dancing (R&B or disco), went to #1
Fanny be tender with my love (R&B). Quincy Jones said this was his favorite R&B song. It’s a favorite of mine too.
Jive Talking (R&B), went to #1
Nights on Broadway (R&B/Funk)..you’ll hear the brothers “natural” voices in this song.
Tragedy (Techno? Pop) you just reacted to this. It also went #1
More than a woman (Disco/R&B) One of the best love songs ever made!
Love you inside out (Funk/pop), went to #1
To love somebody (R&B) One of their earlier hits, from 1967!!! You’ll see how young they were.
Massachusetts (pop/country), went to #1 (you reacted to this)
Wind of Change (funk/r&b), live 1975 from the Midnight Special or live from their 1979 Spirits tour. They sing in their natural voices on this song.
Alone (pop): One of the songs they made late in their career.
Love So Right (R&B), One of Barry’s best falsetto songs ever.
Words (pop, 1979 Spirits Tour). Barry pours his heart out on this song and they show his wife & son on screen some while he was performing it.
Lonely Days (pop). One of the first songs they wrote after they got back together when they briefly broke up in 1969 then got back together in 1970 to write this.
You Win Again (pop), If you want to hear some 80’s Bee Gees, this is a good one. Went #1 in the UK
    Run to Me (pop)
How Can you mend a broken heart (R&B). The other song they wrote when they first got back together after a brief breakup. It was also their first #1 in the US
Kiss of Life (rock). Shows a diverse side of them.
One (pop), their last top 10 hit in the US
Wedding Day (pop), a single they wrote for their wives! All of them had been married for a while. Barry is will married to this day to Linda for over 53 years!
Rest Your Love on Me Awhile (country). Shows diversity!
Bodyguard (R&B), Robb really shines on this song that could have been played on any R&B radio station!
For Whom the Bell Tolls (pop), again, Robin shines on this one.
Blue Island - live (pop). This song shows the perfect blend & harmony the brothers have. Especially if you do the acoustic one. Just the 3 of them with 2 guitars!
Our Love, Don't Throw it all away-Bee Gee's or Andy's version (pop). After their brother Andy passed, they started performing this during shows in honor of him.
Secret Love (pop). I love the best to this song! Barry & Robin leads.
This is Where I Came in (live) (pop). From the very last CD they ever released. There is a live version out there from a tv show. That's a great one to see how they have evolved into the 2000's!
The 1989 One for all tour medley (excellent vocals & some humor). This is a little long (over 12 min), but they go through about 7-9 songs in this medley with just the 3 of them around 1 mic either Barry in the guitar.
If you want to see them (the Bee Gees) and how they work in the studio try:
    (A) the making of their song "Tragedy" from 1979
    (B) The making of the song "Just in Case"
    (C) The making of the video "This is Where I Came in" from their last cd in 2001

Robin has always been my favorite... appreciate your reaction... if you have time & inclination, check our their live performance of this on the "Johnny Carson show" way back in 1973.. so funny, with Robin lead, Barry singing and strumming, and Robin's twin Maurice just clowning around b/c he didn't have much of a part... lol

As for Andy Gibb, just as talented as his brothers & IMO, the most versatile. He wrote most of his debut album. Andy did duets with tons of people--Olivia Newton-John, Marie Osmond, Gldys Knoght, Dionne Warwick, etc. He hosted Solid Gold, guested on many shows, doing comedy. 4 to check are You Should Be Dancing 93 (with his bros from their 77 tour), the Boyscout Skit from the Donny & Marie Show, singing After Dark for troops on a Bob Hope Special (long version where he's joking w/Bob Hope in his Australian accent), and his stunning version of BeeGees classic Words, done as a Command Performance fir President Reagan...one more, doing I Just Want To Be Your Everything on The Midnight Special❤
