Will soon be starting FF14 again, should I start a complete new character and ARR again, or pick up where my previous character stopped? Let me know! Also thank you to everyone's responses and advice!
Update: ARR is completed and currently in Heavensward! MSQ for Heavensward will be every friday on here and twitch!

Story is the key thing in FF14. If it has been a long time since you played, it is probably best to start over, not only to be refreshed on story you forgot, but they actually balance and rework classes to improve balance and make them all viable.
As others have said, ARR is a bit of a slog but that's because its trying to cram a lot of world building information into your head so that the other expansions can just tell a really damn good story. If you can get through ARR and its patch content, you can survive any down period in this game.

This is absolutely the case. The emotional payoffs in this game are incredible and rewarding beyond what they have any right to be. Don't get in a hurry to "get to the good part" because in hindsight you'll realize that it's all been good parts.

Give it another go, but my biggest suggestion take time to get immersed. FFXIV is one of those MMO's where the story matters, where the characters draw you in. If you ask a 14 Player of their favourite moment most may mention a story bit and then go with a raid thing. Watch the cutscenes read the dialogue and dont rush to get past the "filter" you will notice that on its own it will slowly make you feel immersed.

    • @drachepumpernickel7056
      @drachepumpernickel7056 8 месяцев назад +17

Yeah, a realm reborn is slow, but it IS necessary to have the foundation of the story and lore for all the expansions to build off of. If you skip ahead to heavensward or later you'll be confused and lost with what's going on, who people are, and all that. The best attitude to have is to take your time with the story. The games about the journey, not the destination.

    • @ArborusVitae
      @ArborusVitae 8 месяцев назад +3

On the other hand, if you don't care about the story, just buy a skip. The endgame raids are tons of fun, especially once you get into Ultimate content. Personally, I was never particularly engaged with the story in FF14, but played each expansion as it came out so a skip never really made sense for me. If I was getting into it nowadays I'd 100% just buy a story skip and boost and then find story recaps/wiki articles later if something interested me.
As someone with a lot of raid experience in WoW- cutting edge every tier, some top50 US clears, etc. the FF raids are much more enjoyable and engaging to me mechanically. Having now experienced some of the Ultimate raids in FF, the WoW mythic raids are comparatively boring.

@@_aPaladin It's not even really about mods/addons to me and moreso just the fight design itself makes everyone participate every pull. A lot of WoW boss mechanics pick 4-5 people at random and the rest of the raid just does nothing. It's not uncommon to only get a mechanic a few times in a 4 hour night of progression wipes. In FF, your role in the mechanic might change pull to pull, but you've always got something to do.

@@ArborusVitae In all fairness, if you only focus on raids in FF14 you're likely to get bored quick too. Sure there's a lot of content at first, but FF14 doesn't focus on just the raiding scene, and so a lot of people might get turned off at the low amount that get released per patch. It's always best to come into FF14 knowing what you want, but with an open mind to try the other things the game has to offer.... and the story really is what gets the most focus by the devs.

As a long time wow player that has gone to ff14.. the REALLY hard thing is to lose the wow mindset. To skip every cutscene because in wow. .who cares?! They don't matter. But here. .they do. And you can actually trust the developers (all hail yoshi P) to not waste your time with pointless things. I know you SO want to skip all the slog.. because in wow only the end matter!!! But here. .it don't. The journey does. That is all that matters in ff14. Your journey with the story. And everythng matters. Even the song for a realm reborn when the moon fell is important four expansions later in the Endwalker. Everything is connected. So don't skip! I actually went back and played through the whole story again because I skipped at the start. Every single mainquest and was blown away from the foreshadowing and how much the little detailed mattered. Oh! And the dude you see in every trailer? He represents you the player. And.. it will make sense.. don't worry about it!

I sometimes wish wow could get good writers for there story, it's a big mess right now. Andiun, Thrall have depth to character. Then it's just a massive cast of side characters that doesn't really get you invested. No subtle moments which Asmondgold recently said when reviewing the anime frieren. Then good build ups to a climax of a story when shit is happening everywhere. Having you as a centre character in FF14 also makes a huge difference instead of just... Hey hero..... It's just so lazy in wow.

14 is fun but the story just like WoW is too scared to take chances. It's too coddled. I wish both WoW & 14 would take more chances at character development and big events. And honestly once I was done with the main story I just had to go back to WoW, content pour is too little in post patches you might as well do them all at the end of an expac cycle. I usually unsub and wait forever to just do all the new story quests. 14 needs more content. WoW has been delivering that more lately. Both games are fun but I could never make 14 my "main" MMO.

@@TargetsExpendableI'd disagree with this, but given that I haven't played WoW take this difference of opinion with a grain of salf as I don't know the context of what you're referring to.
From my experience on the story the writers do take a lot of chances. Many times they have well written characters that they aren't afraid to develop in an interesting way, especially in relation to other characters. The main cast get the most development, my favorite being Alphinaue going from an arrogant/naive elvin lad with a hero complex to the most politically minded character in the story making big power plays. Rhabahn losing his arm comes a close second because it's the start of his own arc when Stormblood comes around.
There are major characters who even die in game. It's something they establish early on that no character is particularly safe, even a few characters from the main story party end up getting axed, even more characters if you started from 1.0.
I don't think the writing has to be especially complex, but what I like is that there are parts where the writers cleverly weave in the lore in game into the story, so if there's some lore about a location or major event in the world there's a chance you can catch it in the main storyline. Gave me a few eureka moments while I was playing.

The dragon from the RR trailer? He was so pissed that his assault in the trailer permanently altered a regions climate to be trapped in endless winter, casuing a large amount of their people to die from exposure and frostbite. To be fair, the dragon had been trapped in the red moon from the 3rd Astral Era. The game starts in the beginning of the 8th. So its been a hot minute.
In the HW trailer that was a Dragoon, which is a job class from game start that has a long history of dragon slaying. The idea is that they launch themselves up at dragons, and the spiked armor is so, if they get eaten by a dragon they can kill the dragon on the way down from the inside. They be hardcore like that.

The 1.0 Trailer has a lot of things in it that were eventually dropped...
The card things are still there; Those are leveplates that represent leve quests that're a form of repeatable content quests. Those get eventually somewhat discarded during the game proper.
The 'breakdown' is The Echo; it is a special power we have as a player that allows us to see things in people or places' memories. It was also meant to give future visions at some point but that got dropped from what it eventually became in 2.0.
The Primals escaping from the explosion on the lake fed into a big plot where they were basically sentient entities that were trapped there for everyones sake. MOST of that got dropped. Primals now seem to somewhat retain some memory between being summoned by their respective peoples, but are more influenced by what those summoners want and thnink rather than being their own entities completely.
Unfortunately there is one big downturn to a lot of these trailers, specially past the Heavensward one: They really require you to know the game up to then to make sense about why we should care about all these people we see.
Cinematically beautiful as they are, it kindof falls flat for completely new players because, well... who is this elf looking dude? Why is the reveal of that catlady so dramatic? Why should I care what happens to that white-haired guy and his obviously named companion? You don't know if you don't already play...

10:00 Tank. FF14 determines classes by the weapon they hold. The Warrior, the ax guy, traditionally is a very basic fighter with heavy armor who dives headlong into fighting. Paladin, the sword and shield guy, is a knight with a small affinity with white magic; with white magic, they are invincible while being vicious with the sword.

    During Heavensward Trailer:
You: I'm trying to watch the show.
Dog: But the people want to see me.
One thing to note - the guy you thought was still alive isn't the same guy from Realm Reborn. They're from the same Empire, so they have similar helmets/masks, but different dudes.
So I would definitely encourage another go if you do enjoy stories in your games, but you might need to really shake off the WoW approach from your mind. FFXIV is definitely story RPG first and MMO second. There's no need to rush as all content remains relevant no matter what expansion and level you're in and there is endless side content to explore at your leisure. You likely won't have too hard a time tackling any raid content you're interested in seeing by using the roulette (random party) option or even Party Finder (where you set up a party and what you're looking for and people join specifically to help with it).
And when we fans say it's story driven, we mean everything. The jobs are story driven (in later expansions there are additional story quests for each role - healer, melee dps, physical range, magic range, and tank) that culminate in a final story quest for having done all of them. Raids have stories that become important. Dungeons have stories that give more insight to later patches. Even unlocking glamour ("transmog" equivalent) is a little story quest.
Final Fantasy XIV is more like an ongoing television series. Each expansion is a season with its own self contained story, but there will be plot threads established that will not get resolved until 1, 2, or 4 expansions later. Things you think are side content, filler, or unimportant can and will suddenly become major plot elements, sometimes tying things together in massive ways. And you'll finish an expansion only to find the next 1.5 to 2 years of patches continue the story, building up to the next expansion in the final patch or two. The cast of characters is rather large as well and you won't find the WoW situation where you're kind of forgotten and the developer's characters take the spotlight. This game is centered firmly on you as the main protagonist, but the huge cast of characters are equally important. You never get fully anime "the main protagonist is the sole solution to everything" and your closest allies (who you meet in Realm Reborn) will grow and have their own personal growth through the story as well. You'll get to see them mature or let their guard down at times.
    A REALM REBORN
A Realm Reborn is doing a lot of work establishing world building, lore, how magic works, who the key players and figures are within your circle and within the different factions and cities, as well as the history of the world's conflicts. Taking place on Eorzea, you have 3 cities to choose as you recall that form the "Eorzean Alliance" but fun note, the nation you liberate in the 3rd expansion - Stormblood - is actually the reason that Alliance was formed. To stop Ala Mhigo from invading Eorzea. Years later, the Garlean Empire conquered Ala Mhigo and now occupies it. Years later, the Empire tried to invade Eorzea and was stopped by the battle with dragons seen in 1.0 and they tried again at the end of 1.0 invading the Carteneau Flats (where the cinematic takes place). They try one more time in Realm Reborn, forming the main conflict of the story, though the player and his group must also deal with the dark figures known as Ascians (the edgy guys) and their schemes teaching others to summon gods known as Primals.
    HEAVENSWARD
The story picks up heavily here. Along with the success of Realm Reborn, the team got a larger budget. Cinematics improve. Voice acting skyrockets. The story pacing improves. A friend of mine abandoned all his side activities when he got here and was in Shadowbringers within 2 months. The story is dealing with a 1000 year long war between the elven nation of Ishgard and the Dragons. Your small party gets entangled with the leader of a rebellious group referred to as heretics who have sided with the dragons and insist the dragons are in the right despite slaughtering the elves for 1000 years. On the other side, you're accompanied by the top caliber dragoon of Ishgard, who doesn't buy a word of what the heretics claim.
    STORMBLOOD
The Eorzean Alliance is forced into action to liberate Ala Mhigo. The Warrior of Light and his allies join the fray, venturing to both Ala Mhigo and the far Eastern kingdom of Doma to force the Garlean Empire to wage war on two fronts, weakening their defenses in pursuit of freeing both nations and forging new alliances.
    SHADOWBRINGERS
Summoned by a mysterious figure, the Warrior of Light and their allies must contend with ancient truths and revelations that alter everything they've known about their own world and its history. The Garlean Empire is fractured, but still a threat that must be dealt with as a new figure seems to be taking control of the Empire's armies.
    ENDWALKER
After Shadowbringers' revelations of the history of the planet and its narrow avoidance of complete destruction eons ago, the "Final Days" are upon us. Concluding the 10 year story of the Hydaelyn/Zodiark Saga, this expansion resolves just about every plot thread reaching all the way back to A Realm Reborn, answering questions, revealing lore that was long left untouched, and concluding the story that was initially started in the patches of 1.0.
    DAWNTRAIL
Having averted the apocalypse, our heroes journey to the new world at the behest of one seeking their aid in determining a new king. We don't know much beyond that other than the Warrior of Light and his allies will actually be split on who they feel is best choice and opposed in their efforts.
You'll be surprised how often you hate a villain in this game and then you'll get through a patch and wish you didn't have to kill them, understand their point of view or why they're doing what they're doing and honestly question if your decision would be any different in that position. The Endwalker storyline brings it all home in a way that makes you think about real life and how we go through it day to day. Ultimately posing questions about what is the purpose of life, its meaning, and where do you find happiness in the face of inevitable death.
Playing the entire thing from Realm Reborn to Endwalker takes less time than you might expect. They've also made it essentially 90% soloable with all dungeons able to be completed with a party of NPCs so you can take it at your own pace.
I've seen so many streamers, men and women, choke up at multiple points through the story if not fully in tears both of sadness and joy. There's a particular point in Shadowbringers that while I won't say will definitely move you to tears, I would say it will gut punch you simply because you seem to genuinely care for your dog. There's a moment in Shadowbringers every dog lover can slip into and just feel the impact of the scene. It's essentially "What if you died and years later you had one opportunity to see your dog again. And what if your dog could finally speak and tell you everything it never got the chance to say?"
One thing to note regarding having to play through to unlock new jobs, at least you can typically just swap as soon as you unlock them and keep continuing the story on that new job and you'll have options afterwards. If you played as a Lancer/Dragoon and then unlocked Gunblade, you now have a DPS job and a tank job at the same level. You have the choice to do either one in content now.

ARR may be considered a 'slog' but like. it's not like the way the game is structured changes any in the expansions, you just have more strident plot beats keeping your attention. you WILL be doing a lot of "go here, do this, meet guy, read text", that's the beating heart of the story that keeps you marching.
I say this as someone who loved ARR, and kept loving more and more as the expansions progressed (started during Stormblood era, haven't played Endwalker yet): let the game talk your ear off a bit, there IS a point to the prose. you CAN stumble through with your eyes half shut, but the more you're willing to pay attention to names and places as they come up, the better sense you'll get for the world and all the peoples that inhabit it, and connect with other players over that shared meaning. start fresh, breathe easy, and may you walk in the light of the crystal

The gunblade class is a Tank (Gunbreaker) and requires you to reach level 60 before you can unlock it.
If you already have a class at or near 60 and own the Shadowbringers expansion (or higher), you can rush to Gunbreaker and do New Game+ mode to experience the Main Scenario Quests for A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, and be able to start Stormblood as a Gunbreaker.

Fo answer the question of "Is a Realm Reborn a cataclysm?" Yes and no. The beginning cutscene was quite literally, the ending cutscene for when the original FF14 shut down. It was the end of if a timeline, in a sense.

Dude, you’ll LOVE FFXIV. I’m a 1.0 Legacy player-I’ve been subscribed since September 20, 2010 early access (only pay $10 a month for up to 40 characters for free). I was there when the 1.0 servers shut down. So I’ve experienced this whole game’s legacy. You will love the story and character progression, and I do recommend dabbling in all jobs and classes (crafting and gathering can be worth it if you want to save your money making your own gear) as the play styles are different and fun. I play a female Elezen (elf) as the Ninja job. I’m just about to get all of the job classes to Lv90. I play on the Excalibur server, too.

If I had to say one thing about FF14, treat it like an RPG. A single player RPG. It's an RPG MMO not and MMORPG. The second thing I'd say is only worry about the MSQ. It will level you on it's own. Blue quests unlock things. Side quests are story/lore.
If I had more to say; The free trial now includes Stormblood. So you can use that to take your time with it and just play as you feel like it. A Realm Reborn has a lot of setup to do, if you skipped the story it probably does feel like a slog because what could be you carrying a body to lay to rest a comrade just looks like a grab x and go to y quest.
As for the classes/jobs, you can switch between them at anytime, so while it can be disappointing to have to wait, the upside is you are never stuck with anything, you can tank one dungeon, heal the next and dps in a raid right after, all with your one character.
People love helping newbies, and especially watching and helping them go through the story, kinda like when you really love a show and wanna share it. Take full advantage ;3
I'm gonna stop before I ramble forever. Good luck

I am just now realizing that 6:22 is keeper of the lake being made basically. Also all the stuff that we see in this trailer for the most part is Meteor experiencing his first echo probably and it did pretty much sum up all of ARR. Also ARR has some cool stuff, it's definitely more of a slow burn/buildup to the story tho but there's some repeating themes and stuff that you don't really realize till later. FFXIV story is top tier tbh that's what's been keeping me subbed for so many years, this is the only mmo i've found to have a good story. The story, raids, and loot keep me going

I tried playing FFXIV years ago, after having played WoW for like a decade. I really didn’t get it. Wow teaches you that the story is kind of an afterthought. Like the story is there, but it’s not front and center. In FFXIV, the story is front and center. It took me coming back with that in mind for it to click. By the end of A Realm Reborn (technically a fair bit before the end), I was hooked. The story is amazing and completely digestible, in a way that I never felt in WoW.
There’s also so many side stories that are engrossing and really fun. FFXIV has its version of daily quests to get faction with certain groups, and even those quests are part of a really entertaining side story. There’s funny side stories, serious side stories that choked me up, wholesome and touching stories, comedy type anime stories, etc. etc. etc.

Take your time and enjoy all that FF14 has to offer, you haven't seen anything yet.
Btw, the character in the armor you kept asking why he isn't dead, isn't the same person you saw later. They have similar design aesthetics, but are different people.

I'd recommend starting from scratch now that Stormblood is included in the free trial. The best moments all build from extended character development you already skipped.
The game is designed with the expectation that you'll play many or all the classes eventually, so there's no real reason to race to gunblades before they make sense from a story perspective. Plus you could sacrifice everything to look cool and to find out the prefer the gameplay of scholar or bard. Older classes get plenty of attention and polish, so they shouldn't feel like a punishment for lagging behind.

Hello! I know you've already started your journey back in Eorzea, but I hope you enjoy the second round. A lot of people will tell you ARR is bad, but I think it's just one of the weaker points but the payoff of it all is amazing. The world is immersive, the game systems and the story evolve and grow as you go. FFXIV is about the journey, not the endgame -- what makes a lot of our bosses and raids so amazing is they all have incredible lore and story backing them and while the spectacle and fights are amazing, the fact they all have deep story and you know the long road you took to get there makes the pay off that much greater. Everything, even our endgame raids, have a lore and story behind it all. It's a beautiful world and a powerful community surrounding it. I hope you enjoy it for the world, the players, and the whole experience. Good luck!!
Slight edit: note that the Dawntrail trailer is incomplete, we get the final part next Fanfest in January where the 2nd new job will be added into the trailer. WE GOIN' TO FANTASY BRAZIL BABY!
Also if you really wanna start as gunblade, the only requirements is a job already at lvl 60. I know most will tell you it's a cardinal sin, but you could buy a level skip (not story, just level) for a job then pick up gunbreaker and progress through the main story on it. You'll just be massively over-leveled because it starts at lvl 60.

Yes this monster is a boss in game. no one likes that dungeon. So the Evil Empire invaded and the Elder Dragon Midgardsormr got pissed about them showing up on his front porch cutting to the neighbors just a tad south. He destroys their flagship over a lake that's caping a font of aether. When the flagship blew up, it disrupted the flow and a stupendous amount of magical power was released. This allowed the Primals (gods of the beastmen) to be released into the world again. In the first trailer both Efritt and Titan are shown clear enough, in the second trailer Odian is shown.

    A Realm Reborn
Everything goes slow in that one. Listening to some people talk is (exaggerated) excruciating, because they take forever to say anything, like they’re taking great, tremendous, immense, world shattering levels of care to enunciate clearly - and there’s a couple of them that are really bad, with one being a prominent main NPC.
But it’s also the beginning of everything, before the world knows who you are; so for many, it’s a painstaking path around the continents, over and over again, as you prove yourself to everyone. Then, shit happens and you have to flee, to Heavensward. People know who you are, now. Things are different.
Anywho, glad you enjoyed that. Thanks for posting. 💙

While I don't recommend you doing it; I absolutely cannot recommend you playing through level 1 to 50 if you dislike it.
FF XIV has a slow start with a main cast consisting of over 50 characters. The pay-off comes during all the hundreds of hours after A Realm Reborn.
(The developers have a genuine excuse of ARR being subpar, as it is technically an expansion made to replace the whole 1.0 base game.)

  • @TheIndigoEclipse

As someone who also came from WoW, the hardest thing to do is break the mindset that you need to rush to the endgame. There is SO much to do along the way. This game is absolutely more about the journey.
Take your time, enjoy the story, explore, try out jobs. You can focus on the story questline and level just fine. No grind required. Just do comet looking icon quests, those with a Plus icon and your Job quests. Side quests are not needed to advance.
The most wonderful thing about this game is that old content is still done by veterans due to the roulette system. You will always find groups to do dungeons with.
So take your time and enjoy the world, the music and the story. Trust me, once you hit the first expansion, you'll be hooked.
    Good luck!

my guy, you have NO IDEA just how awesome (in the truest definition) the event surrounding the realm reborn cinematic was at the time. see, the original ffxiv was.. well.. bad. really bad actually 😂😅. so instead of the original plans the devs had for the game, they chose to literally destroy all that was.. in game! that "egg" as you called it for weeks and weeks was slowly becoming bigger in the sky. there were new quests being added, all regarding the mystery, all building towarss the climax. then, the day finally came. the players all, in game, stood on those cliffs you saw in the cinematic as the timer ran down. the very land quaking beneath them, rumblings echoing through out every zone, as the song being played in the cinematic flowed, the sound low, fading in and out. every player came to those cliffs on every server and waited... and then, the timer hit zero and the first part of that cinematic played. we watched as our heros and friends we made along the way failed their ulimate quest. bahamut destroyed all. and then, as the screen went white and the music stopped the servers were turned off, and we were given the message that the story was not over. we would return... to a realm reborn~
the second part was added when a realm reborn released, and let me tell you: it really was exactly as the name said. it truely felt like a completely different game.~

Final Fantasy 14, in my opinion, has one of the most engaging stories across all MMOs and this is coming from someone that HATES reading dialogue in MMOs for the most part. It's a very long story and some quests drag on after you've been playing for like 8 hours straight, but it is well worth taking your time and not rushing through it. Getting into Heavensward ("Heavens - ward" as in "towards Heaven") you'll be very confused if you totally skipped all of the Realm Reborn story. It's important to take breaks if you get burnt out on it and come back to push through more of the journey later. Each expansion is SO amazing! I only just finished Stormblood and it was AMAZING - my favorite part so far despite how in love I was with Heavensward's storyline. Despite usually hating dialogue in games, I take my time reading every line and watching every cutscene slowly because they DO matter. Even the "mid-sections" that go between main expansions - like the Dragonsong War part after Heavensward - are incredible and worth taking your time. You'll be blown away by just how impactful this game is. I hope you can start over and truly enjoy this game. This team really knows how to make a really interesting story.

I don't know if you've already started FFXIV again or not, but I thought I'd make a couple comments. One, story and narrative are MUCH more important in FF than they are in WoW. In WoW, you can literally level through an expansion by running dungeons and not care about any of the quests. Not so in FF. Literally EVERYTHING involves progressing a narrative and the narrative is important. And more, the devs actually *remember* past narratives in crafting new ones. It makes for a game that's a much LONGER experience than you might be used to. Those cutscenes do end up mattering eventually. It's just a very slow burn for some of them.
Two, unlocking Gunbreaker involves getting a single job to level 60 and then doing the unlock quest in Gridania and it unlocks at level 60. This can, literally, be done during the ARR storyline if you have the benefit of the Road to 80 buff from starting the character on a Preferred or New world. It is a Tank job that plays like a DPS, so if hitting a lot of buttons quickly is your kinda thing, you might enjoy this one.
It's not the game for everyone, but what it does well, it does EXCELLENTLY.

The first trailer actually shows us a special ability that we, the Hero of Light have, and it does pretty well in doing so. It is the Echo. Not going to say more then that on the matter as it is a big lore important thing, but it also is the explanation on why we the players can see red markers on where the attack of a enemy is going to be, the echo gives us somewhat of a future sight to read the patterns and movements of our enemies, which is why there are some mechanics that aren't shown, because they lorewise are either too quick for our echo to pick up or just overwhelm our echo, which is why in those situations we need to look at the boss to read it's pattern to let us know what the attack is going to be.

As others have noted, Sophie has the power to awaken things in others, her perceptions and ideals shaping reality. I think this is especially interesting in how she treats the Witch after jer depowering. She treats her with kindness and empathy and i think this helps the witch become a better person. "You have a big heart", she says, and i think this becomes true in a way it wouldn't otherwise. But it also illustrates s common thread in Miyazaki's films where treating people with empathy and compassion can change things for the betterml.

"I am become you" isn't a grammatical error if that's why you are saying you don't know how it got past editing. They are using an archaic form of grammar since they are speaking with older English as such forms are used to imitate the tone or parody of such older usages. Think about how the famous quote from Oppenheimer is a translation of an old Hindu text, "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." That's why it got past editing, because there was no reason to edit it out lol.

This is a weird bit of info, but it might be something you'll enjoy knowing you have access to if you give FFXIV another try: If you click the option for trailers in the launcher, you are also able to switch the launcher to the version used in previous expansions, so in addition to seeing the trailers for each expansion, you can also get the launcher that we would have had and used during each expac as well!
Edit to add: 1:08:27 Not just any taco either, but a Big Fat Taco (Not to worry, you'll understand this stupid joke in, like, 50 to 100 hours)
As for A Realm Reborn, it is a bit of a slog, but I'd recommend just taking your time and keeping focus on the things you are enjoying honestly. ARR's biggest problems are that (1) everything that comes after it is just plain better and (2) ARR has to handle all of the initial worldbuilding and putting all of the major players in place, and given that the story that starts in A Realm Reborn isn't fully concluded until the end of the base expansion for Endwalker (so 5 expansions worth total) there are a LOT of more interesting things that get built off of the foundation ARR Builds. Also, even ARR gets a bit better once you get past the 'starting zone' stuff. Whichever zone you start in is pretty generic 'MMO Fantasy Stuff' going on and it doesn't really start to get more interesting in MY mind until you get past the first 3 dungeons and to the first Trial.

The big thing to keep in mind is what 14 was supposed to be vs what it became. 1.0 failed so heavy 14 was meant to be a one off to save face. This is why ARR is such a slog and is less refined. They never intended for it to be as popular as it was given how bad 1.0 actually was and so they put in some effort to make a product that would save face with no intent to proceed but 14 ARR at the time was a massive success and felt like less of a slog when it was current. This is why people say if you get past ARR it improves a lot. It’s also why ARR is so large.

Multiclassing is standard in this game.
Used to be able to mix them like the prior game FFXI, but you can still have any class you want on the same character -
    classes have levels, not you.
Some are only balanced for later expansions, and that's why you need to play something else before you get that unlocked,
but you'd need to do that anyway, you can choose a class that shares gearsets if you think you know what you'll want later,
and it usually only starts about 10 levels below cap for whatever expansion it was released in, so not much work that way.
You also get leveling bonuses for alt classes.
    It'll make sense, promise!

"a realm reborn is shit" okay dude, no i can't. coming from a WoW player who doesn't even confidently know that yes you are the warrior of light in the story by the end of ARR because he basically "skipped all cutscenes and dialogues to get to the good part" consequently missing all the foundation of the story, i find it very "rich". considering that you made a mistake is good but you still don't seem to understand why when i hear you say that. the irony man, especially from a WoW player.
How the F are you supposed to understand the story if you skip hours of it in the beginning ? i'm always dumbfounded by wow skippers who come to this game for the "story" but skip half of it and de facto don't understand half of what they see later on *facepalm* yeah dude start again
don't skip the main story dialogues, don't skip thoses of your job quests either, they give a lot of "flavor" to the world, but yeah you can mostly skip those in simple fetch quests that are everywhere, those are not that interesting and rarely bring something of interest in term of intel or flavor.
this game is heavily oriented on the story and it is meticulously written, some small details in ARR can be important two expansions later, some things in the beginning you will only understand in the end of shadowbringer maybe, so yeah PAY ATTENTION otherwise it's just another MMO and you are ruining it for yourself.
hope you'll do good, it's up to you dude.

You'd be surprised how many people make that mistake to skip everything in FFXIV and then wonder what's up. I think the game is best described as a RPGMMO instead of a MMORPG : it is first and foremost a role-playing game with the MMO bits snagged unto it in an efficient way. Also, I think the starker difference between WoW and FFXIV is how the story is focused.
In WoW, it seems that your character is pretty much just along for the ride. Yes, they are a champion and accomplishes a lot of things but the focus is almost always on those unique NPCs and heroes that are already in place. It's a story about Azeroth and those who were involved in the events since Warcraft 1. It's like being an insert in a tale that might've happened even if you weren't there and I think that is the bit that I'm struggling with to try and get into the groove of WoW (subbed to play Season of Discovery which I'm actually enjoying but I did try retail for a month and got me to uninstall that one)
In FFXIV, the story revolves around the world too but you're the central piece. Other characters might have their own arcs and character development (and yours as well to a degree actually) but they fall back on you and recognize you're the hero and things usually cannot happen unless you get involved. Heck, the job quests (especially the Dark Knight's job questline) usually show that behind your usually stoic facade and the WoL basically being your avatar, even they aren't immune to everything that happens around them. There is one quote that is said by a character at the end of Shadowbringer's 5.0 main story that pretty much says it all; for the purpose of not spoiling anything, I'm not going to say it but those that finished 5.0 know what it is.
FFXIV is a story where the journey is as important as its destination.

Honestly I personally loved a realm reborn but it did get really monotonous and repetitive tbh but once you get past a certain point it gets really good! And some side stories are really good as well!
Like crystal tower, the coils of bahamaut and hildabrand. Heavensward is my personal favorite but I feel every expansion has its own certain charm to it!

Yeah, WoW is more about "Lore" and FFXIV is way more about characters. You can't just skip everything and watch a Nobbel video after. xD (Though he does plays FF for the story too)

Many people dislike ARR, but even with it being stacked and slow (some people said to me that in the past duties and some quests and shit were worst lol), it is SUCH a good introduction story and worldbuilding moment in the game. Like many comments here: ffxiv pays of to those who pay attention to the story, it isnt something seccondary, it is main part of the game, and of this universe. And having patience, it is actually cool, and on the slow parts: endurable. Heavensward really takes it up a notch though, because with the basic of the basic being set, it is time to PLAY and explore the lore, and it was very emotional and envolving to me.
I acrually am starting Stormblood now, since it was recently added to the free trial (holy shit, only game I will ever play that have me do +500h without ever playing, it is funny actually), and I always feel anxious because I refrain a lot from spoilers and take the story at my own pace, to enjoy, and the world keeps getting larger. There is a feeling of never being able to catch up to people who ended MSQs, but someday I'll get there :)

Started playing FFXIV early this year and cant stop. glad to see you're giving it another go. ARR is rough to get through but it does a lot of worldbuilding and introductions to the main cast of characters. Took me a bit of time to get invested into the story i.e: until I got to heavensward content. only goes up from there

I always say treat FF14 as a normal solo RPG that just so happens to have people running around at the same time as you. No need to rush or anything. ARR is slow in the story department but it picks up as you go. I honestly can say that Shadowbringers is one of my top 5 favorite video game stories of all time.

The earlier patch trailers don't engage the story but the later patch trailers sure as heck do.

I wouldn't call FF14 fan base "spoiled" in terms of the writing. I just think the current lore in Endwalket is some of the best it's had. A lot of players hated A Realm Reborn story- even AFTER the devs condensed some of the Main Story and radiant quests. Other players have made known their disdain for the entire expansion of Stormblood! From what I've gathered, content creators who play WoW have stated Blizzard may be taking some risks in the lore/story department in order to garner a newer, wider fan base, which in my opinion won't work in their favor. It would be easier to create something new and fresh instead of milking the proverbial cash cow until it keels over.
